A big apology. This forum has never been censored; we all have freedom of speech and in this time of terrorism, heroism and so many people in need SHAME ON YOU for taking offence to David's words. Just SHAME ON YOU. If you don't like the forum, maybe you should excuse yourself, leave and let the rest of us enjoy the forum, but only after you have apologized to David and the rest of the group. In the past, I have been a lurker and not expressed my thanks to you! I was in no way, shape, or form insulted by your reminder to give to organizations. I wondered if Bren had a mouse in his/her pocket when using "we" in his/her e-mail. I am a novice basket weaver living in SW Oklahoma where the school art teacher is the only other person I know interested in weaving baskets. I have learned so much since I began reading Weaver's Words. Please don't let the attitude of one person affect your decision-making. I ask that you continue your mission to bring information as well as joy to the basket weavers of the world. I am sending a resounding AMEN to your mother's reply to Bren's e-mail! Does he have a shop? Catalog? website? How does one find out about his classes? Thanks. I spent a good part of the Fri-Sat weekend demonstrating basket making at the Orchard at Altapass on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Met lots of interesting people, including people interested in taking basket classes, and finished four baskets. Sold a few, too, but mostly had a relaxing time. Dried the black walnut dyed baskets on the railing of the deck around the back of the apple shed and took in the magnificent mountain views. Ate more than my share of apples, too... I recommend demonstrating in a place like this as a sort of little vacation from the rat race. Only fly in the ointment was some #$*%&#, who dropped his cigarette in my outdoor dye pot--with a butt can just inches away...there's one in every crowd.... but this one will be soon forgot... Happy Weavin', Mary Hooper %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weavers Words Sent: Sunday, September 23, 2001 8:25 PM From: Russ & Leslie Johnson To: davidc@iei.net Hi David, I don't write in very often but I just read your Mom's note to the Weavers Word family and feel I must respond. I admire what you do for the weaving community by supplying this forum for us to share information & would hate to see it end. I took no offense to your request for donations for the need is great & I don't think we as Americans can be asked too often. I think yours is a reminder that in the weeks that go by, the need will still be there. I am just sorry that someone would even think you had an attitude or were berating someone because of that appeal. I know its tough to put up with this unruly bunch of basket cases but please David, don't let the ranting of Bren Miller turn you off on the rest of us. Sincerely, Leslie Johnson Michigan %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: No Subject Sent: Sunday, September 23, 2001 7:38 PM From: To: Dear David, I don't want to talk you into continuing weavers words if it is not what you want to do, but I do want to let you know how much many of us would miss it if you stop. I am so happy that David shows his love by telling what is close to his heart. I am glad David keeps in poems that tug at our hearts. and he will even keep in an e-mail that disagrees with him. David doesn't have to do any of this for us. What a great guy! What a great son. It is sad to hear David is overwhelmed that he should give up the WW to someone else. How can that be? When I see a WW in my e-mail, my first thought is David. It's a tough job he does for us and I hope he realizes he is loved. His mom's e-mail was wonderful and I, for one, don't want to see David leave my computer screen. Thank you David and Thank you, David's mom Georgia Kane, in Kimberly, WI %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: Norma's Letter Date: Sun, 23 Sep 2001 21:02:12 -0400 From: "Mary Hooper" To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com, weaverswords@yahoogroups.com Dear Norma: Your letter was disturbing. Maybe I'm so used to David doing such a great job for basketmakers that the idea he might stop just pulled me up short... I once received a note from David that indicated just a part of what he has to live with every day. It was in no way a complaint, but simply a few words of explanation regarding a matter I wrote about. He is a brave man who is every bit as heroic to me as any firefighter or policeman. After all, they choose their life's work--danger and all-- where David has had his life's work, in a way, chosen for him. I do not mean this as a denigration of the heroic people who died in New York, but an acknowledgement that each of us serves humanity in our own ways and to the best of our ability. Please take comfort in knowing that I, and I think I speak for many of our 1400, appreciate what David, and you, through your support and caring of and for David, do for all of us. Misunderstandings are the stuff from which grow great sadness and I wish for you and David whatever it takes to ease your sadness and distress this time. With best regards and much appreciation, Mary Hooper %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Keep Up The Good Work Sent: Sunday, September 23, 2001 11:27 PM From: Fred Densch To: davidc@iei.net I enjoy reading weavers words. I think you do a good job, and I appreciate the time you spend doing it. I have been weaving for about two years, and I have a lot to learn. I look forward to each new posting. It is easy to sit back and let someone else do all the work. It is easy to say I can't do it, but that doesn't get the job done. Our country is in a serious situation and we need to stick together more than ever. Keep up the good work. Thanks, Janice %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: A Touching Poem Sent: Sunday, September 23, 2001 9:33 PM From: Laurna To: David Collins First, I want to thank David, for making "Weavers Words" possible. I can only begin to imagine how much time it takes. I'd rather read WW than drink that first cup of coffee in the morning! I am compelled to come out of "lurkdom" to respond to "Real Heroes. I have five family members who live and/or work in Manhattan, and my husband is a retired law enforcement officer. I shared "Real Heroes" with him, and it brought tears to his eyes. Some people really do not know how they can help, and are grateful for the names and addresses of legitimate organizations that they may donate their money to. My stepson Paul Hebner, who lives and works in Manhattan, sent the following and gives permission to share it with others. -Laurna in Upstate New York "After watching the service at the National Cathedral today, I was compelled to pen these few thoughts. I hope you find them acceptable." Hate made a hole in the world And love will fill it up. I am an American. I am Christian and Jew, Muslim and Hindu. I am fair and I am dark, And my eyes are slanted and round. I am descended from slaves and kings, And my parents came from Every corner of the Earth. I am an American. I labor behind a desk and a plow, In a classroom and in a boardroom. I have built businesses and buildings, I have built factories and families. I am an American. All who live and labor here And pursue the dream from which This nation was born Are my brothers and my sisters. Hate has made a hole in the world And now we will close it up. You do a great service for us basketweavers. I think your message to remind us to show a little appreciation for our firefighters and policemen was very timely and well-intentioned. My father was a firefighter for many years and I know that sometimes he felt that they were taken for granted. I've watched him go into a burning building and it was not an easy thing for him to do. But it was what needed to be done and he did it, along with many other brave men and women. We should remember to thank them. Don't be discouraged because one person felt it necessary to express a negative opinion about your message. Remember, there are 1400+ readers who didn't express a negative opinion. The majority rules!!! Keep up the good work, David, and Norma, keep standing up for your son. A good mom is still protective of her kids no matter how old they get. Thanks!!!! Joan %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weavers Words - Thank You, David And Norma Sent: Sunday, September 23, 2001 9:06 PM From: Alice Edwards To: Dear David, I wanted to write and thank you for all you have done to bring Weavers Words to all of us. Like your Mom, I always read, but rarely write. But it is greatly appreciated and you have always done your self-appointed task well. I also appreciated the notice about the special fund for New York policemen and fire-fighters. While I have seen information and appeals for many worthy groups, including Red Cross and others, I had not seen those particular addresses and appreciate knowing about them. I agree that these men are heroes, the year around, not just now. And I think it was nice to remind people of their counterparts in the rest of the country. This information may be more available in other areas, but this newsletter goes out to areas where it may not be as available. It is good for all of us to be able to help where we can. Please try not to let criticism bother you too much. I think the numbers of those who belong to the list, are a very real indication of the value you provide to all of us. And a special thank you to your Mom, Norma, for letting us know how David felt. You are both very special people. I am a long time subscriber and WW has been a very real blessing to me. May God bless you both, and all of us in these very trying times. And if I may paraphrase a line from a book, 'let us deal gently with each others souls, spirits and feelings'. David, I, for one, hope that you do not step back and not do WW for us. I know it must be a big job, but you don't know how much you are appreciated. I know that I have met MANY WW members face to face and have become good friends with some of them. I am proud of your efforts and think that you do a marvelous job. I also think that your Mom, Norma Collins, is one heck of a lady. The two of you are special people. Keep right on plugging away and don't back away from us. Say hi to Connie for me too. I truly love and appreciate you. And while I am on here, I want to let all WW members know that I am praying for any and all who have been victimized by the tragic events of September11th. I pray that none of our members were directly affected, but I know that we, as Americans, were all affected in one way or another. We are a community of individuals who all have opinions and we all try to listen with open minds. We are a community largely because of David and his generous nature. We are all shaken and touched at different levels by the tragic events of 9-11-01 and holding our collective breaths as to what will come next. David has kindly provided information on becoming involved and helping out during this trying time... as are most television, radio, and print medias... He did not do this as a way of saying that we are not intelligent people... he was, I am sure, trying to help us - giving us the contact information that we may not have written down or that some may not have had before. David, I do not assume to speak for everyone, I speak for myself as I say PLEASE DO NOT LET THE WORDS OF ONE PERSON MAKE YOU FORGET HOW MUCH WE ALL CARE FOR AND ABOUT YOU!!! David's plea to help was no more or less than I received from a hundred different directions after last week's disasters. I did not in the least feel berated. David, let it run off your shoulder. We appreciate all you do to keep this list running. Quit the list if you need to or it is time for you to move on due to things in your life but please do not because of misplaced comments. There is another list from a different interest of mine that I receive also that is filled with people's criticisms to each other about comments and opinions expressed. Maybe this is just another example of the effect hoped for by the terrorists. That we are torn apart by hurt feelings and picking on every word we chose instead of drawn together for strength. I would implore all to draw together and realize that we are a diverse group and may express our feelings in different ways. The written word cannot necessarily convey our feelings correctly and are very open to misinterpretation. Write what you feel and try not to overanalyze what you read. We will get through this and it would be a shame to loose this forum over hurt feelings. Thanks to David's Mom. I am doing my first craft fair this December and am trying my best to build a stock. I've had visitors, illnesses and now our outside units are being painted and I can't get to my weaving things for over a week. I would like to know if anyone could tell me what would be a reasonable amount of stock to build up for my first fair. Also, I have a feeling with things being as they are at this time if I should try to make little inexpensive baskets to sell too. I mean I would have done this anyway but I was going to try to base my sales on larger totes. Are there any suggestions as to what might be good in the way of small baskets to make? The Art Center will be showing many of the baskets from its extensive contemporary basketry collection, in addition to hosting both a juried and an invitational show. For our part in the proceedings, the National Basketry Organization, Inc., will be presenting an exhibition of traditional basketry curated by John McGuire. We'll also be sponsoring three two-day workshops on January 18 and 19, along with dinners and keynote speakers. Class participants will also be invited to the Arkansas Arts Center's opening night reception, Thursday, January 17. Classes will be taught by Leon Neihues (white oak); Dawn Walden (ash and quill) and John McGuire (Nantucket style lidded basket). For more information or to save a pre-registration place at this exciting event, please contact NBO at PO Box 681, Mercer, WI 54547-0681 or nbobaskets@century.tel.net. Plans are also well underway for NBO's first Bienniel Conference, which will be held August 20-25, 2002 at Ghost Ranch, Abiqui, NM. Eighteen artists are confirmed for teaching classes thus far ... several more will be added to the list. A detailed information/registration brochure will be mailed to NBO members in late January, with a general mailing planned for early March. If you are not already an NBO member, you might want to think about joining and becoming part of our efforts to promote the art, skill, heritage and education of basketry -- that way, you'll also be amongst the first to have full information about the Biennial Conference. If your not a member, but want to be included in the March mailing, please contact NBO at the address above. NBO is also pleased to have made some progress on our website...new features have been added to the Gallery of Baskets pages, and the forum will soon feature an monthly discussion question. Check out the website at www.nationalbasketry.org. I'd also like to make a personal statement of thanks to David for making this forum such a useful, informative, important part of basketry today. Again David thank you for all your efforts in beheld of the basket making community. Bren. How can a plea to aid the people of the tragedy of Sep ll be considered to be berating? If I was berated it certainly went over my head and I'm 6 foot 3 inches tall. I awoke on Tues. Sep. ll, thinking it would have been Bear Bryant's birthday. I was in my shop when the tragedy began top unfold and was unaware of it until I came into the house to check my mail. Wednesday was my birthday and I spent it thinking of all the people who would never celebrate another birthday, would not celebrate anyone's graduation, their child's first steps, a fishing trip with dad or friends, that new play they were anticipating, the basket seminar coming up or any of the things we as human beings and AMERICANS enjoy. My first thoughts on Tuesday was to give blood and to get out the flag and display it. The pleas to give and the offers to help in anyway came immediately after. So Bren if you are asked to give a thousand more times by celebrities or by David or anyone else just stop a minute and thank God that you are still here to give. I'm speechless. I guess I don't know quite what to say. That doesn't happen to me too much. You can ask all who know me. I realize that we have freedom of speech, but haven't we learned something from the events of the last, nearly 2 weeks? I hate the thought of someone saying something to intentionally hurt or berate someone, who does so much for us. I was not at all offended by the references you made to the organizations that needed help. This is the information age and with the information we get it im-powers us to do what we want and feel we need to do. I didn't see you twisting my arm in any fashion. You were simply passing on information as many organizations are doing by commercials on TV, radio, online, and word of mouth. I think in this age of computers and cell phones, that sometimes, since we aren't face to face it makes it easier to say things we normally would think twice about saying face to face. (Basically we wouldn't have the guts to say) There are a few words of wisdom that my grandfather gives. He is suuuuch a wise man! Before you say it, be sure it passes the 3 gates or don't say it. 1. Is it nice? 2. Is it the truth? 3. Is it necessary? The rule is if it can't pass all 3 of those gates, then don't say it! It is just my opinion, but please don't one bad apple spoil the whole pie (or something like that). I give where and when I feel compelled to, therefore, whether or not someone or place 'advertises' an organization in need, I, little ole me, decide if it suits me. I don't get offended, I guess it is like going through what the postal carrier brings to my door. I think, for the most part, most of us are good and very appreciative weavers. My personal rule of judgment is 'if you can't say something nice, say nothing at all'. Great thing to live by as are the 3gates. You are appreciated and I for one, hope you won't let this...berating you received take up one more second of you exceptional mind and of your busy schedule. Take care and they say...forget about it (be sure you imagine I'm saying it in a New York accent). Take care, Lynda I wrote this to you personally, however you may print it in WW if you choose. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: WW Sent: Sunday, September 23, 2001 10:23 PM From: Lynda Crowe To: David Collins Hi David, Hi all, To all who are affected by the terrorist happenings of the 11th, my deepest thoughts, sympathies, and prayers are with you. I'm not even sure that all of us are aware of it or not, but in the months to come, we will likely find a direct connection to someone who was there. I found out the 11th, that a girl from my hometown was on the 89th floor of tower one. I then found out that I knew her and her family. Her family lived across the street as I was growing up. My cousin and a friend work in Washington, DC for the govt and was thrilled when we got the calls from them. So, not knowing what any of our futures hold, be sure you tell all your loved ones you love them everyday. Ok, off my proverbial soap box and on to other things... Well, we are getting ready for a cold blast here in Indy. We are only suppose to get up to maybe 60tomorrow. Fall is definitely here. Over night at that! I just wanted to send out a reminder about our newest 'name that basket' contest. We have our newest free pattern up-it is a fall stationary keeper. I'll probable give the contest a little more time. I'll watch for David to send out this WW and decide by then. We will hopefully have a new newsletter posted soon. Sign up to play our contest and win a great prize. Sign up often and as many times as you like. Take care and as always... I totally agree with David's mother. I think he is doing a fabulous job with Weaver's Words. I do not in any way think he "berated others into giving" by his words that appeared at the beginning of the issue. Please, David, ignore this post! The rest of us appreciate everything you do and were not offended in the least! Without you, there would be no Weaver's Words. I was on e bay last night looking over the Auction for America. I have read so many times that people see things about basketry on e bay. I must not be looking in the right place because I couldn't find much at all. A few books, but no baskets, only Longaberger. What section should I be looking in? Anyone know? It makes me sick to see NYC. My heart was broken to see the WTC go down like it did. My cousin lives in the city and was fortunate to be working away from the WTC that day. He was still close enough for it to have a profound affect on him. I can't imagine what everyone is going through out there. I thought about all the flying I did this summer and almost jumped to the conclusion that I would never fly again!! BUT...to leave Hawaii you have too! I almost thought I would give up my plans to go to NC Convention in 2002 but the thought of not going was unheard of and the bad guys would just win!!! I have my hotel reservations and I am going anyway. I figure if my time is up, it will be on a plane or whatever!!! I am looking forward to getting the Convention booklet in the mail in the next few months. It will be good to see all my new friends again. Off to weave something... to clear my mind... Everyone take care, Joanne %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: [weaverswords] "Weavers Words" V. 5 I. 18 Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 16:27:23 -0500 To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com From: "Roberta Comstock" Cathryn, Tony & Joanne - Thanks for the basketry reports. Hearing what you (and others - hint!, hint!) are all doing helps keep me motivated. Cathy in Germany - I hope you enjoyed your swap basket in spite of it being late. I've received a couple of late baskets in previous swaps. There were good reasons for the delays and the baskets were well worth the wait! I try not to jump to conclusions. Once I learn what's happened, things are generally not nearly as bad as I might have imagined them. If you never received a basket, though, that is good reason to be angry! Well, I haven't had any great adventures recently, but did find a nice old (possibly antique) buttocks basket in an antiques shop in Waterloo, IA a couple weeks ago. I had a feeling when I went into that antique mall that I would find a good basket to buy. At first I thought it was a little cylindrical coiled basket, possibly Mexican or South American, but wasn't really happy with the garish colors in it. Then, when I came to the buttocks basket, there was no doubt that it was The One. The rim is oval, 16 X 13 inches and the handle ring is 13 X 11 inches; both made of sticks with the bark on. All the weaving is done with bark strips about 1/4 inch wide, but somewhat variable, as if cut buy hand and eye without a mechanical guide. I have no idea what kind of a tree or shrub the material came from. The 16 ribs are mostly split sticks (half-round), but a few of the smaller ones are full round. The outer bark is left on except for a a pair of accent stripes 6 inches out from the God's eyes. The basket is obviously well used and pretty old, but still very sturdy and functional. I also drove over to Cedar Falls to visit the N E IA fiber and weavers guild's gift shop. They don't have any basket weavers right now, but are doing a lot of spinning and weaving and selling loom woven rugs, and hand spun knitwear. Definitely a couple of exciting things coming in the near future, though!!: ***** The Basket Weavers Guild of Oklahoma will host its third(?)annual Weavers Weekend from the 19th-21st of October near Guthrie, OK. This is much closer to home (for me) than most of the recently posted events. The cost is very reasonable, too. Teachers are: Peggy Brennan, Edana Cauldwell, Dale & Mary Garnett, Deb Larson, Bert Lauderdale (that's me!), and Debbie Shorter. There may still be a few spaces available. For details, contact Mike and Linda Tickle right away at 404-727-7420 or email them at . ***** Then, in November, Woven Circle (the local guild) will host our first annual Woven Circle Heartland Weave-in Retreat: Friday, Nov. 16 starting at 3pm through Sunday, Nov. 18 ending at 6pm. Location: Heartland Presbyterian Center, 16965 NW 45 Hwy, Parkville, MO 64152 (816-891-1078) Seven great teachers are excited about instructing at our first weekend retreat. Since they are usually only available for larger seminars, we are really lucky. They are: Ann Coleman, Harrodsburg, KY; Marilyn Wald, Riga, MI; Sandy Atkinson, Lennon, MI; Norma Buehlmann, Des Moines, IA; Marlys & Jeff Sowers, Milo, IA; and Venie Hinson, Doylestown, PA. Evening classes are planned in addition to the Saturday and Sunday all day class schedule. Teachers will bring a selection of their kits or arrange for short classes on Friday and Saturday nights. These classes won't be prefilled, so come to the retreat early to get the best selection. Sept. 26 is the deadline for receipt of your registration form and fee so that class assignments and hotel rooms can be scheduled. Weekend Pass - $117.50 fee includes a two-night double occupancy lodging and six meals catered by Heartland (Friday dinner through Sunday lunch). This is a great package deal. Class fees vary. A reduced price is available for one or two day attendance. Most teachers will be vending so there will be lots of shopping potential. If you would like to receive a copy of the brochure, please call Debby Ross at816-507-3603 (eve), 816-435-1953 (day) or email her at dross4@csc.com. I hope to meet some of you at these two events! They are special enough as they are. Putting a shiny finish on an unpolished stone will give it a 'plastic' look and feel. IF you really want polished stones, get some polished stones. If you feel you must adulterate the unpolished ones, what about the glaze that is made for polymer clay (such as FIMO)? This reminds me of when we had our wing built and the builder installed the natural slate hearth in the master bedroom and then painted it with black stove enamel. I had fits when I saw it. It only took him a couple of hours to paint, but it took the entire next day for him to clean it off! (He should have asked first.) I can laugh about it now. I grew up in Athens, New York and am currently living in Maryland. I was surprised to see Athens mentioned since it is such a small town. Anyways - Lynn Sherlock lives in Hudson New York, which is just across the river. Her phone number is 518-828-1494. She has a small shop in her house and also has basket classes. Several of the girls who work with my sisters take classes from her and come to work the next day talking about what they have made. I have visited Lynn's shop at least twice while I was visiting my sisters. She has a great shop - a lot of great baskets and was always willing to help me with any questions I had. Good luck David thanks for all your hard work we really appreciate it. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: [weaverswords] "Weavers Words" V. 5 I. 19 Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 16:30:19 -0500 To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com From: "Roberta Comstock" Elaine - There was some discussion of selling baskets at "parties" a couple of years ago. Some people were willing to take orders, and some would only sell what they already had made. It sounded like a good thing to me (although I don't weave enough to sell - my baskets get swapped or given as gifts). Mitchell Webster - Most of the baskets I ship are not too big. I usually send them via Priority Mail through the US Postal Service. If I need to send multiple baskets or a large parcel, I generally opt for Federal Express. They will pick up from my house. Helene - Thanks for the information about posting photos of original baskets at the NBO web site. I'll get back to you soon with a private message. Bert C. I know that it is difficult to please everyone but I think I am speaking for the majority of us that we think you do a great job. There will always be a few that have something to say (I know, as I have put on a basket weaving convention and other events) but please, do not take it personally. There are always be those that will have an opinion that needs to be spoken. Which is okay. It is wonderful that we are a free country with free speech. Unfortunately not everyone has learned that courtesy never goes out of style. I hope that everyone and their families are doing okay during this sad, tragic time. I know several people who barely escaped from the trade center and they are going through a hard emotional time right now but are grateful to be alive. Thank you David for trying to do your part.
