Kristin: I agree - it's all in a name.... Which makes naming baskets to sell ('muffin basket', newspaper basket", etc.) harder. You'll get customers saying, "Oh, I don't need a muffin basket. I need a --- something of that same shape and size) It limits them sometimes. I've told the story that when I 1st made stair baskets - a number of people didn't know what they where for, so I asked them what they thought. One woman said it was for putting your crafts in on the edge/arm of your couch so you could work on em. Became my answer when people said they liked them but had no stairs! Juanitia: I met a neat older guy in a nursing home - he suggested cards, BD, get well, etc. writing stuff and stamps. He also suggested that the runs to Burger King would be welcome, too!!! Angie: I am really glad to hear from the Lehigh Valley Basketweavers through you. They are just starting up as a group. Yahoo! They started talking about organizing this group in my classes. She sent a large round basket with a "D" handle and dark green accent which shows through a wide weaver with cut out trees--great all year but esp good for Christmas. Inside was a small rectangular basket with rose trim and a wooden bottom, which I am already using to organize my bedside table. It was fun to do a direct exchange, although the random matching was fun too. thanks to all who organized this and earlier swaps. I know everyone appreciates the work involved, Mary Fulton %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Rushing Article Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2001 20:42:27 EDT From: Wickrwoman@aol.com To: ewiscarolv@att.net, ka9zre@yahoo.com (David Collins) Carol, Thanks for the heads up on the Martha Stewart rush article, since I am not a subscriber, I hadn't heard of it. Wonder if it's also on her website? Congratulations on doing your first few chairs or footstools with rush, isn't it fun? I just completed weaving two chair seats also, using genuine bulrush that I ordered from H. H. Perkins. A few weeks ago, I taught both a paper fibre rush footstool class and a genuine cattail leaf rush footstool class up in Grand Marais, MN at the North House Folk School. Paper fiber was one day, but the genuine (not pre-twisted) took two full days. Once you master the paper fibre rush, try weaving with the bulrush, because it is so much nicer and easier to use than cattails. Natural rush is much more labor intensive, but once you get the hang of the pattern, it's not too bad. I offer both classes at various workshops and folk schools across the nation, so check out my domain website on the Class Schedule page for details for the coming year. I also have several pictures of both kinds of rush on my PhotoPoint Seat Weaving album, which has a hotlink listed in my signature file, below. http://www.wickerwoman.com/class.html If you'd like me to teach for your guild or workshop, just send me an email, letter or call me. I'm setting up the schedule for 2002, now. Hold any calls or emails until I return from teaching at the Campbell Folk School, on September 20th, please. Barb Byrne %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Stuff Sent: Sunday, August 26, 2001 12:48 AM From: Tony Stubblefield To: David Collins/Weavers Words Nancy - about Deft finish on Nantucket baskets - I use Deft semi-gloss spray on all my Nantucket's and have great results. As with any kind of varnish or polyurethane, the key is to apply multiple thin coats. Fortunately with Deft it isn't necessary to sand in between coats. I usually use 3 to 4 coats for the outside and 3 for the inside. I also usually don't attach the handle until after the basket is sprayed so it gets more coats as I turn it and reapply every time the basket body gets one. I simple turn the basket upside down to do the outside and then back upright to do the inside. Deft dries fairly quickly so you can apply thin coats about every 15 minutes. I probably would handle the basket or turn it over until it has dried for 24 hours. The handle gets flipped every coat. After the basket has completely dried you can go over it with super fine steel wool ending with a buffing of paste wax. Dianne - about rim filler - I don't use any type of rim filler on "market" style baskets. I think one of the reasons that the gap is less noticeable on the baskets that I make is that I always use 1/2 round rims which are proportionately much larger than the gap and I always use as wide of a lasher as possible, something like 7mm all the way to 1/2" flat usually double lashed. I am able to use a wider lasher as I try to have my baskets flair out on the sides so that the uprights get farther apart as you go up the sides. When I see a big basket topped with a flat oval and lashed with 3 mm cane the rim just looks so wimpy. I like a really sturdy heft rim on my "work" baskets as the rim is the main strength of a basket, especially one with a notched handle. Now on Nantucket's I do always have a "rim cover" as opposed to a "rim filler". It is a piece of 3mm cane that sits on top of the rims and spans the gap between inner and outer. As far as a "locking row", like you I too like a row of 11/64" or 3/16" around the base. I just saw a Native American basket on ebay that had such a row of weaving around the base. Well, I am attempting to organize my basket room again. I am now trying to get my other crafts into some kind of assemblage. So far I have only succeed in spreading them out more into a 4 drawer dresser. I think once I add some kind of dividers in the drawers things will start looking better. I am adding a new 10" diam sanding disk to my worktable and I am going to have to figure out how that is ever going to fit. I definitely need to finish some projects to make room on my table top. It is a never-ending battle as you all know. Take care and happy weaving, Tony Stubblefield St. Louis, MO http://www.JASkets.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: [weaverswords] "Weavers Words" V. 5 I. 17 Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 10:00:31 -0700 From: Sandy Atkinson To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com Dear WW, For Brenda - We carry the wooden reinforced base with rockers for a baby cradle and the pattern too. Go to our web site (sandyatkinson.com) to see a picture of the finished cradle. It is listed under the cradle section. It is made to fit a standard small bassinet mattress from Sears. For all guilds in the US and elsewhere: see our guild page on the web site. If you are not listed, please fill us in our your current information so we can pass it on to others in your area. For Margaret - concerning sweet grass. I usually get two cuttings a year on our field. One mid summer and one late fall. Check for any weeds growing in the patch, pull them out. Then grab a hand full of the grass, and with sharp scissors, cut about an inch or two above the ground. Take a small amount, no larger than a quarter diameter, and secure with rubber bands or twist ties. Hang each gathered amount in a dry, dark place, upside down to dry. Will take about 2 weeks to dry, depending on the weather of course. It can be braided together in long lengths, or twisted together or simply laid into the rim of a basket, or woven into the sides of a basket. If making long lengths, don't make them too thick, thinner is better for using to weave. Hope this helps everyone. Have a wonderful weaving week!! Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 06:37:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Anette Meier Reply-to: meier@ahmbaskets.com To: ka9zre@yahoo.com Hi There Everyone, Thanks to Sandy Brown for sending me a most beautiful casserole basket. The basket was woven with blue accents, and lined with a blue print bandana with the corners poking out the sides. Sandy also sent along a bag of walnuts mixed with other goodies, a booklet of walnut recipes (with a way cool Ambrosia Salad), and vacation brochures of her area... makes me want to take a trip out west. I used the basket the day I received it... a half pan, aluminum, fit the basket perfectly, and I got (Sandy got) SO MANY compliments on her work... Thanks Sandy for being my swap partner, keep in touch! I greenhouse grower friend of mine had purchased some sweetgrass plants for me this past spring and they are growing beautifully. I don't really have a green thumb, so when I had read that this grass was invasive, I figured it wouldn't really grow that fast for me... HA! This grass IS INVASIVE!!!!!! It took a while to start growing after I planted it, so I was sure that it wouldn't take over, but it found "it's feet", and sent up shoots, not right next to the plug, but at least 8 to 12 inches away from the plug. So, I got some gutter flashing make a corral for my grass and that has worked nicely... I needed to have the flashing go at least 4" into the ground, but I put it 6", and have transplanted the grass to that area. Since, I don't know when the prime time is for harvesting, I have been clipping some every couple of weeks, and so far I haven't found a bad time... I'm working in making some little skinny braids to weave with, with the idea of making a handkerchief basket... it does smell great! Well, thanks again to Sandy Brown, and happy weaving! Deanna hopped over to Oahu for a few days and we had a great time. Deanna and I were going over a Nantucket ice bucket kit that I bought in NC last march. I noticed in Maggie Silvas Nantucket Tips booklet that she has a booklet out for specific ice bucket instructions. I tried to go to her website and e-mail her but all were returned. Anyone know where to get this booklet now? Also, Deanna was explaining the cherry wood stages. Green wood, versus what I had. I don't know anything about cherry. Are there books out on the market that can help with explanations as to preparation of cherry for uprights etc? For instance, I didn't know that I would have to soak the cherry uprights as long as Deanna suggested. I have a John McGuire book that I am rereading for reference and a Martha Lawrence book. Any help will be appreciated. Deanna was able to give me a lot of info in the little time we had together. I hope our trade winds come back. I was teaching at a friend's house and the humidity was awful. Hope it is better for those on the mainland. I can't remember the last time a Hawaiian summer was this hot!! I have not posted for a long while. However... I need to stir things up a bit. First of all... a huge applause to Claudia for a tough job, well done, on the most recent swap. It must be hard work and I appreciate what you do. It is in regards to the swap that I am posting. Today my swap basket finally arrived. Sadly... there may be some of you still waiting to receive yours. I was very angry, hurt, and disappointed when my partner failed to honor the deadline. When I agree to do the swap I consider the time and commitment. I participate only if I am sure I can honor the rules of the swap. As most of you do. I know there are some extreme circumstances that make it unavoidable. But, given the amount of time we have...we should be able to get our baskets out. And we should never deliberately wait to receive one before mailing ours. Lets keep in mind, we do these swaps because we love to weave and share and receive ideas with others. Sometimes even begin lasting friendships. I am reminded. Most importantly "It is always better to give than receive" Happy Weaving!!! Claudia Hopkins %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Wood Base Finish Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 17:36:46 EDT From: Acre8shun@aol.com To: ka9zre@yahoo.com Hi Nancy: I've been doing this for a decade and it works great. I use it on any base, be it cherry, poplar, maple, you name it. I use it on the Nantucket's basket itself. I carve handles and skates from half-round reed using a shave horse and draw knife and it works especially well on that. So here it is. Lowe's (Home Depot doesn't seem to have it). Deft, Semi-Gloss, Clear Wood Finish, Lacquer. Fast Drying in 30 minutes. A one-quart can will last you a long, long time. Also buy yourself a good paintbrush. I use a Purdy 1" angled brush. It's for oil-based paints and it's made of 100% natural white china bristle. They're a little pricey ($8 - $10). But, when not in use keep it in a freezer baggie in the freezer. Take it out 15 minutes before you're going to use it to get it to room temperature. Clean it occasionally (say after 25 uses) with lacquer thinner. Turpentine and mineral spirits won't work. The key here is it should have three coats with a superfine sandpaper sanding between coats. I also use a tack-cloth to remove residual dust before painting. Although it's fast-drying, directions say to wait two hours before reapplying. I wait the two hours, although years ago before I knew about the waiting period I would re-apply after 30 minutes. I can't say that it did any harm to wait only 30 minutes. While I'm here I might as well mention that my engineering husband makes beautiful shave horses on the side for me. The kind you sit on. I also teach carving workshops. One and two-day workshops. Learn to carve beautiful rims, handles and skates from half-round reed. Make a handle to fit your basket, not a basket to fit your handle. E-mail me atacre8shun@aol.com to request a flyer of the horse and/or the workshop. Bye For Now and God Bless Elaine Robson acre8shun@aol.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Hi all! To make this long, boring story short - my e-mail address is changing to debbiecz@earthlink.net. Please feel free to write to me - I'm actually crazy enough to think I might be gaining some free time to weave more now. I know, I'm hallucinating again. At least I'm hopeful. Thanks for continuing this with all the craziness with nbci, it would have been easy to have said forget it. Thanks again. Ok all, We have a winner for our name that basket contest!!! It was truly a difficult decision. Our panel had the hardest time deciding which names they liked. I made them all choose separately and then I received the choices. They were not allowed to discuss it among themselves either. So, I think we got a great name for our 'previously unnamed lamp'. Log onto the site to see who the winner is and what the name for our lamp is. If you enjoyed the game and would like us to do it again, in one form or another, log on to our guest book, where you voted, and leave us a note to that effect. If you decide you want to do this again, we already have a new pattern, which is currently nameless. So, let us know what you think. Well, we will have a new free pattern up on the site soon-hopefully by the first of the week, so if you haven't gotten the current one, log on and print it out for your use. When the new one is loaded to the site, the old one will be gone. There may even be updates to the sales item page, and to the newsletter!!-Hopefully. The last 2 weeks have been tough. My son started back to school on the 14th, and my baby started kindergarten nearly 2 weeks ago. I can't believe she is that old!!! She was suppose to go only 1/2 day, but the county is offering one full day class per school and she was chosen to go. She is so excited; it is hard for me though. She had 2 years of preschool, as she thought she should be in school since her brother was, she says, 'it is my time, mommy'. It was hard for me to let go of him, but this is really tough, maybe because it is my baby. She says she isn't a baby, by the way. We are working on actually eating at lunchtime and keeping our name out of the red can-we like to talk. So, life goes on.
