Thank you for the goodies you sent as well. It is a egg shape basket and she left it natural which gives its unique look. Thank you in advance. I have posted here only one other time. I love reading all about the weaving from all over the world. There are so many designs out there. I have sent my basket to Cathy and I hope that she really enjoys it. If anyone lives out there in North Carolina and knows the e-mail address or web site to the New Bern net outside of Havelock can you send it to me please. I have lost it and I want to order some reed from there. I come to the conclusion that is the best reed that I have found that I really like. So, if any of you know of some good reed to buy please pass it on. I live in Hot and Humid Okinawa, Japan and the reed they get here is not that great. I do have some that I bought off a friend that she got in NC. Well, ladies happy weaving to you all and many blessings to you.... Tracy Ybarra, Hot and Humid Okinawa, Japan!!!!! I just finished the thing a couple of weeks ago. I to had questions on some of it. On the flat oval area for the hood, I did twist the reed to have all of the flat oval on the outside. On the handle area, I tucked and cut the stakes like normal. But I DID NOT like the unfinished appearance of that area. I took 1/2 inch flat oval reed, long enough to extend past the actual area for both sides and seagrass as a filler. I attached reed to lash it with as you would a rim. I felt that it gave the bassinet handle area a more finished look. I hope that this helps. I like to follow a pattern sometimes, but I also take and make it a bit of my own. Or, I look at pictures of baskets and incorporate a small portion of several baskets into one. Tony, Good luck on your beading project. I have beaded for many years. My strongest beading technique is applicate beading, but I also do the Peyote stitch for special people who want it to honor "Grandfather" in the native American ways. It can be as addictive as basketry. David, Thank you for all of your hard work to keep this wonder form of communication going. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I have learned sooooo much from WW. I usually lurk on the fringe. I have not been weaving as long as some of you. So much to learn, so little time!! It seems that everyone in our guild, basket class is making baskets that use the plastic liners. They're buying them at home depot or Lowe's at very reasonable prices, a little over a dollar. Several non-weaving friends suggested it's all in the name. One might call a basket a "pie basket" while another might call it a "toy basket". One would place bottles of wine, another rolls of toilet tissue in the very same basket. Quilt baskets are good for towels and toys, newspaper (which seldom stay neatly folded) or tinder by the fireplace. So many baskets are useful in the family vehicle be it Van or SUV. I like a drop swing handle for in between the seats. Hanging baskets are good for things other than mail. I keep onions and garlic, matches or lighters for candles or wood burning stove and keys tucked away and out of the way, on the wall. Now add a new dog, and you have dog toy and chew bone baskets along with brush and collars. All the summer sandals need a place as well as mitten and glove baskets for winter. Some of this "stuff" does well in baskets because of the ventilation baskets allow. I use the almost ugly tobacco basket with a dishcloth poked through the four corners for the best muffin, biscuit holder right out of the oven. Hope This Helps, Kristin in Midland MI - it's coooool and wonderful!!!! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Veterans Baskets Sent: Saturday, August 18, 2001 8:29 AM From: Barry Kenner To: Hello Basket Weavers, I know this is a little early to ask, but you all have such good ideas! I hope Daniel has recovered from all of his hard work. He really goes all out to make the camp educational. We took our grandkids with us this year because they had some information they really wanted to gain from Daniel. My grandson wants to make a bow and Daniel was very helpful to my husband and grandson, showing them what they need to do and how to do it. They all learned a lot about pounding and peeling ash. The eight year old peeled a long piece of double satin and she was so proud of it. The grandkids also learned how and helped to construct a great outhouse with a beautiful view, an experience they are not likely to get any place else. Daniel is such a good teacher!! It was good to see our friends from last year and meet some new ones this year. Now to find time to try out that ash I brought home. Thanks, Daniel for the great experience. Joan Culler From NW Ohio %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Hot And Humid Weather Sent: Sunday, August 19, 2001 2:40 AM From: David & Dianne Walbeck To: davidc@iei.net Hello all from hot and humid weather central. I just wanted to share a recent experience with everyone. I recently ordered a couple pounds of reed and while unpacking it I discovered some mold starting to grow. Now I feel very luck that it was not all black and yucky but just starting to get green and fuzzy (still yucky). I know the problem was NOT from the company who shipped it to me but the actual shipping its self. We as consumers have no control on what happens to our packages once they get shipped. I know all too many times I receive packages that look like they were definitely sat out in the rain or something (everything I receive comes through Priority Mail). What I am trying to say is ALWAYS carefully check your reed shipments to see if any mold has started to grow on it before you put it away. Mold spores are airborne and even the smallest amount of moisture can start it on a wild take over. I was able to save the reed from the mold's hostile takeover but I keep thinking "What if I just put it away without checking it out"! I do appreciate my suppliers and will keep ordering from them but I thought that this tip may be helpful to those of you who may be in the same situation as I. Mold loves Hot and Humid weather, so double check your current reed supplies and incoming orders to see if the nasty little bugger has tried to take advantage of your reed during this hot humid weather. It just pays to be extra diligent in this weather. Still on a brighter note, the weather here has been cooled down by a passing Typhoon and we took advantage of it. Our family spent a whole day at the southern part of the island seeing some of the less traveled sites. We did take quite a few pictures and I am planning on bringing those pictures, if they come out, to the AMB conference. We found a secluded beach where I picked up sea glass, shells and stones. The water was crystal blue and if you looked down into the tide pools you would see tropical fish, sea urchins, anemone, and starfish. It was like being at an aquarium. The volcanic rock formations that have been eroded from the pounding surf are truly amazing. We also visited the 2nd residence for the Ryukyu royal family. It was constructed in the 18th century and is truly amazing. the gardens, natural springs, and palace were incredibly beautiful. While we were there a group of students were taking lessons on how to play the shanshin (I don't think I spelled it correctly) a traditional type of guitar. Portions of the monuments had to be rebuilt due to damage caused by W.W.II. We also visited the site for the last battle for Okinawa. There were over 40 monuments erected for those who died in W.W.II (Allied, local Villagers, and Japanese soldiers). We climbed over 400 steps to get to the top and see the magnificent view overlooking the cliffs. These cliffs are called suicide cliffs because two Japanese Generals performed ritual suicide here when the Island was liberated by the Allied Forces. There were a few other sites we visited but we soon ran out of energy. On one recent outing we went to see one of the many smaller castle ruins and visited a local museum. I plan on going back there and taking a good look at the many baskets they used; there is only so much looking you can do with two young children. Have A Great Day, Dianne Walbeck Okinawa Japan %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: WVBA Membership Date: Sun, 12 Aug 2001 18:35:13 EDT From: SLTARAWOOD@aol.com To: ka9zre@yahoo.com Basket weavers wanting to join the West Virginia Basketmakers Association may do so by sending dues to: Membership Chairman Sharon Sutton #6 Scenic Hills Parkersburg, WV 26104-8064 Dues are $20.00 for individuals and $25.00 for businesses or teachers. Here is my answer to the question. Use a piece of string for your twining. I is easy to remove, leaves less space than a piece of round reed and holds the spokes in place if you need to. I personally prefer the locking row but sometimes you have to remember this will throw off your "first row behind handle or center spoke" because of the way the locking row adds another row of weaving. Enjoy all the messages. This festival for any of you who are interested is a gathering primarily for animal fiber weavers and spinners. It is a wonderful place to buy hand woven and spun products. Anything from slippers to hats and blankets and cotton towels as well as hand crafted wool and otherwise old world Santa's etc etc etc till I am broke again! They also recognize us basket makers as hand weavers. I taught three workshops there this year and plan to repeat the experience next year. If you are in the area (Allegan Michigan) plan on checking it out and don't forget your checkbook. The hand make items from these folks are awesome. Lamas, sheep, goats, angora rabbits on display as well. Lots of workshops in spinning, weaving, felting, basketmaking etc. I personally am hooked on needle felting as well now. Well worth the visit if you appreciate hand spun and woven products. Wanted to share this one with you. It has been one of my favorites for years. Now I am part of it as well. Happy weaving! It has been a long long time since I wrote in. Just wanted to pass along the fact that I have uploaded some pictures from Ash Camp at Daniel Nye's place in Ishpeming Michigan to my photopoint site. the link is below my signature line. The second annual ash camp was just as great as the first, maybe a bit better this year as more of us knew what was going on! We pounded some great trees this year, some got to make handles, we all split cedar for rims, some also split freshly cut maple and cherry trees. We got some spruce root, had some retted bast to play with and lot's of good company. Met new people this year, and was glad to see many returnee's. Daniel says next year is a go, so watch for postings. The Grings will be there again too next year, my husband is finding he likes this more than he thought! This coming Saturday I am heading into Michigan again, not to the UP this time, but to Frankenmuth/Birch Run area. The Thumbweavers Guild is having a class that day with Carol Antrim at Pam Woodbury's house. Looking forward to seeing my friends up north again! As I live so far away from guild meetings, I don't get there very often, but always enjoy them when I do. It is beautifully woven up and I will treasure this basket. She also included some wonderful tuck-ins for me to enjoy; some vanilla scented candles, some body lotion and bath gel, a strawberry sachet, and come coffee syrup. There more included. The coffee syrup is unique, you mix it with a glass of milk, and only made in Rhode Island. I did mix it up but my daughter who is just as much of a coffee-aholic as I am stole my glass and would not give it back. I will have to wait till she goes to bed to enjoy a glass of my own.
