We have been to a traditional village, open cage zoo, and a pineapple factory where they have cute golf carts shaped like pineapples that drive by themselves. They do seem to be enjoying themselves here. In the evenings I have been teaching my mother-in-law how to weave a basket or two. She seems really pleased with herself and is doing quite well. She is even talking to herself while weaving the basket (who among us does not do that)! I once had the chance of taking a few of Martha's classes when I first started out but having only woven one basket and I could not see spending that amount of money (I think it was around a $100.00). Now I wish I could have taken the class and the photos just make me long more to have the opportunity to attend one of her workshops. Previously you posted about someone complaining about the cost of this particular workshop, that person was definitely missing out on a wonderful opportunity. I have only worked with black ash only once (it is on my top three choices for the AMB conference) and fell in love with it. I can see why the classes are priced higher, but someone who is new to weaving may find it hard to digest. It has been over three years since I wove my first basket and now I am getting ready to attend my first convention. I am so excited, and the money involved does not even compare to how much I will be learning and experiencing. My husband has said not to wear myself out by weaving too much...........how can that be possible at a convention?!! Keep offering those wonderful workshops and keep posting those photos so everyone else can be inspired to try something new and different. Dianne Walbeck Okinawa Japan - where it has been too hot and too sunny to do any sight seeing but we did it anyway. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: aloha Sent: Thursday, June 28, 2001 12:49 AM From: The Keener Clan To: Aloha! Last year, I sent a note to Amy DeSmet requesting a catalog and heard nothing. Six weeks ago, I sent another request, this time enclosing a check for $5 for shipping and handling of a catalog--and have heard nothing. I got the address out of the last copy of JUSTPATTERNS...so does anyone know if she is still in business? I am hoping to continue weaving as a business, but it looks as thought I might have to stop for awhile --or even longer. I*m in physical therapy due to neck and shoulder pain caused by weaving (and painting and woodworking, too, I suppose, but my PT says weaving is the culprit) and have been through ultrasound, traction and am getting ready to start electrodes (sounds scary). Anyway, I told my PT that I*d suffered pain from the last traction and it began a few days after our last session and he said to me "Lois, it isn*t the traction--it is what you are doing at home and we can*t do a lot of good if you don*t help us". Does anyone else suffer neck and shoulder pain on a continual basis? Any answers to what is ailing me other than giving up weaving? This is depressing. I*m off to Maui for a week*s vacation! I deserve it--I earned it--and I will enjoy it! No weaving, no painting and no Girl Scouting...just the sand, the sea and a couple of good books... Aloha, Lois %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weaver's Words Sent: Wednesday, June 27, 2001 10:20 PM From: To: David Collins Hi Everyone, Thanks to those who sent me suggestions and help on the brown that was running on my Nantucket purse from a rainstorm. We discovered that it was actually the brown sepia ink from the scrimshaw that was running, not anything from the finish of the basket. The supplier has told me to put a thin coat of clear Kiwi shoe polish on it and if it continues to be a problem, I am to send it back. They had not seen that problem either. Thanks for all the help. I went to order blades and a spare handle the other day and they seem to have been replaced by a black handled scraper and no shaping blades are available. Called three major basket supply shops who have carried them in the past and no luck. Decided to turn it over to Weaver's Words. Does anyone know of a source for these? Or a good alternative other than buying preshaped rims? Thanks! Sarah in the Northwest burbs of Chicago where the garden has decided to come in all at once and is interferring with weaving. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: twill help Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2001 13:23:10 -0700 From: jane milner Reply-to: jmilner@jps.net To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com To Dianne Walkbeck, who needs help with Lyn Siler's Hannah's Marriage Basket. First, I would color in all the horizontal "overs" in the graph on page 157. Then the pattern will leap out at you (it sure doesn't the way she has it drawn!). What next becomes obvious (after I colored it in) is that it ISN'T a complete pattern repeat...which was a little unfair to do to folks. There is, however, enough to figure out what it should be... You will need 1/4" graph paper and a colored pencil. Graph out all the "overs", starting with what Lyn has already graphed for you on page 157. I found it helped to do more than one pattern repeat, just so you know where you are going. You can double check the "over/under" written instructions against your drawing, but I REALLY would much rather work from a graph rather than trying to follow written instructions line byline. (I'm visual...) I think the written instructions are enough to make you go crazy and take all the fun out of weaving twills! Hope this helps and you are able to weave your basket. Looks like a pretty one. Sincerely, Jane Milner A twill junkie from Grass Valley, CA, where the smoke has finally cleared from the fire up in Truckee. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Flo Hoppe Exhibit Sent: Saturday, June 30, 2001 5:47 AM From: Laurie Burns To: Just wanted to let anyone that would be in the Central New York area the week of the 4th to stop at Munson Williams School of Art in Utica. I'm back from my long trek and more or less back to earth. Started on a high note with the Silver Dollar City 3rd annual basketry conference in mid-May. The day after I got home from that, I left for Denver to meet my daughter when she flew in from Anchorage. I won't bore you all with the details, but we spent about a month on the road visiting friends and relatives and attending high school graduations in Colorado, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska, with a brief side trip into Wyoming. I haven't entirely got everything unpacked and put away, but it was thoroughly wonderful to have that much time together after over 5 years apart. I gave away several of my baskets en route, and took my sister-in-law's unused basket supplies off her hands, as she doesn't anticipate having time to use them herself in the near future. It was so good to get back to doing the local guild newsletter last week and seeing basket friends and weaving again after I recovered from the trip! So now I'm trying to catch up on my e-mail. As always, WW is high on my priority list. Carla Adams - What a treasure you've got in your yucca haul! Sounds as if you're handling it just fine. The green color will stay longer if you dry it in the shade, but eventually fades out anyway, so the sun bleaching is not really a problem. There are two varieties I have occasional access to. Yucca glauca is native to western NE & KS, eastern CO & WY. The leaves are narrow, thick and stiff and about 2 feet long. Yucca filamentosa is a common ornamental in the Kansas Cities area. Its leaves are about the same length, but up to 2 inches wide and much more flexible. They have a leathery feel as they dry. If the material has been stored dry, I dampen and mellow it before weaving. I sometimes use them fresh or partly dried. They do tend to shrink some, but not enough to cause structural problems. The wide leaves can be cut into narrower strips if you want uniform material. Either kind can also be processed to extract the fibers for use in coiling or twining projects. Most of the baskets I have woven entirely with yucca are plaited or checkerwork. I have done curled overlays such as are sometimes seen on ash baskets and had good results. I use the stiff native yucca as a weaver in some of my Beachcomber ribbed wall pouches. Have fun with them and let us know what you make of them, please! I'm not sure who the pattern author is, but will try to remember to ask her. Feel free to remind me if I don't post it in the next week or so. A fishing theme is easy, since you can get interesting lures and bobbers to use as ornaments. I would either remove hooks or dull the points on them. For a hunter, you could do a basket with an antler handle, or find some sliced antler buttons to weave in or tie on. A camouflage bandana as a liner would also fit in with a hunting theme. Check out the sporting goods section of your local discount store for related gadgets such as turkey or duck calls. Or get a hunting friend to save you some spent shotgun shell casings. Leslie Johnson - I don't know whether 'correct' is the appropriate term for teaching a leftie to weave to the left, but it certainly is sensible! Any little thing that makes it easier for the student sounds good to me. Miss J. - Thanks for the compliment! Now I have to go back and see what I said on BasketWeave@yahoogroups.com. Many thanks to all of you who have shared your great convention experiences here. I always love hearing the impressions of first time attendees and veterans alike. The new folks have such high energy and enthusiasm levels it helps keep things exciting for those who might be a wee bit jaded. I really admire the people who put these things together.
