I am not certain whether there are any basket makers left today. The very special Perigord-basket is made at Dordogne Unfortunately I have no detailed information. If you are unable to find any useful French web site, the German Basket Museum might be able to help you: www.museen-in-bayern.de/Michelau-Korbmuseum.htm For anyone interested in the basketry of my own country there is comprehensive book on Swedish basketry, displayed at http://w1.855.telia.com/~u85512368/ Happy holiday in France, Jonas (Sweden) %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weaver's Words Sent: Monday, June 18, 2001 5:54 PM From: To: David Collins Hi everyone, I need some help! I had a customer who has said that she got caught out in a rainstorm and her Nantucket purse that she purchased from me had brown from the lid running onto the ivory oval. She said they got it wiped off except for a small spot. I had her return it and there was a small spot of brown ink that had been there before from the design on the ivory oval. I returned it to the shop where I had gotten the oval and they agreed that it was some brown ink and buffed it out. My customer still insists that there was brown coming off of the wood lid. The lid is a piece of cherry with no stain on it and 5 coats of Deft varnish on it. We do scrape off the varnish where I attach the piece of ivory. Have any of you had any problems similar to this? I've sold many purses and have never had any complaints before. This has been a difficult customer from the first but if there really is a problem, I would like to take care of it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Mindy Lower in northwestern Illinois http://www.aeroinc.net/~users/nantucket %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: The end of the road... Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2001 1:32 PM From: J. Choate Basketry List To: List Member The end of the road. We have made the end of our summer's journey out west and are once again hanging out with our horses and mules in Missouri. We saw some fantastic places and met some great people along the way but the most memorable was the weekend in Bishop, CA for "Mule Days". If mules have ever whispered your name and you are afflicted with the long ear disease, then the place to be for Memorial Day weekend is in the eastern Sierra's. Western entertainment at it's finest; from mammoth jacks to miniature mules they've got it all. How about 136 head of mules with some pack gear, throw in some cowboys (and girls), and stir up the whole mess with clowns and fireworks and watch the fun begin. Now that's a rodeo you won't forget soon. We had our own personal rodeo of sorts as we traveled through out the west. Satch, our young coonhound, did his very best to behave but being chained up a lot did nothing for his temperament. After springing him from the "joint" (a kennel formerly used as a prison) we thought a good exercise for the dogs was in order. The problem was Satch needs to be on a leash or his nose leads him to infinity and beyond. The solution, lead him on a leash while running along side of the truck. I, of course volunteer to ride shotgun on the tailgate and hold the leash. All went as we had hoped until Snatch decided that it would be more fun to pull the truck. So I hail the conductor and tell him to "let 'er rip". Satch is in his element and streaks down the road keeping pace with the truck. That is until he decides that now is a good time to urinate. He stops dead, yanks the leash taut and I become unseated and airborne in a matter of seconds. Of course the conductor is not aware that there is a problem and keeps tooling down the road at about twelve miles per hour. While leisurely checking his rear view mirror he notices that Satch doesn't appear to be moving any longer...and who is that lady seated in the middle of the road? Ground in gravel in the gluteus maximus is not standard braking procedure as far as I know. The next time I'll be in charge of the accelerator when thinking "out of the box" occurs as it pertains to dog exercising. Life is much more fun when you sprinkle dogs in it and the more the merrier. Need a dog fix? Then the Alaska Bush Basketry Retreat - Iditarod is just what the doctor ordered. Baskets, snow, the Iditarod and more await you in March 2002. Maybe it's a fish fix? We've got you covered, the Alaska Bush Basketry Retreat - Fish On! Awaits you in August. For more information, or to reserve a space for the retreat checks out www.jchoatebasketry.com. Having a great summer, I hope! I too would like to hear more about the "basketweaving machine". I hope that someone will post more. I agree that it may refer to the weaving of fiber for furniture. Sure haven't heard of a way to weave baskets by machine. Billie, I've been getting those Nigerian Spam scams for years too. I can hardly believe that they can continue to send them, but someone must be sending them bank account numbers. By the time this posts, we should be in the midst of our OnLine Garage Sale. My thanks to Carolyn Poe for coordinating all of our classes so well, Betty Overly and Kay Lee for helping all of us to feel so welcome and providing the best program I have seen, and all the rest of the tireless women who worked to make the seminar such a success! I still don't count a "sheet" as a basket, it seems to be more like fabric yardage. There are some articles in weaving magazines that discuss weaving with the natural materials we use in basket making, but after your weave the "fabric", you still have to construct the basket. Just my thoughts. I just wanted to update you on what is going on for the 2002 Missouri Basketweavers Guild Convention that will be hosted in St. Louis on June 7, 8 and 9th, 2002. We have a theme: WOVEN TOGETHER...Community, Heritage, Artistry. All who helped with the development of the theme felt that our conventions provide us all with a sense of community, a sharing of heritage but most importantly an opportunity to create. The theme is thanks to the committee and the excellent design is thanks to Tony Stubblefield. We have a great group working to get things put together. Thank you all. We have just sent letters and Teachers Applications to over 117 teachers. If have not received one and would be interested in receiving one contact Linda Newman, Jury Chairperson, at Newmanlnewman@aol.com or call her at 636-343-0831 or you can contact Shirley Albrecht at SEAlbrecht@aol.com. The application can be sent to you as an attachment. It will also be included in the upcoming Missouri Basketweavers Guild newsletter, The Twining Times. The deadline to submit is August 18, 2001. Our goal is to be able to have the Convention book out right after the first of the year. We are still looking for a few more Chairpeople. If you are interested in helping let me know. If you do not want to chair a committee that is fine because there are other ways you can help. It takes many people. Our goal thought is to enjoy why we plan. Vendors...we haven't forgotten you either. Wendy Reary, St. Louis Basket Supply is Vendor Chair. If you are interested in vending let her know. Her e-mail address is stlbskt@juno.com or call her at 314-843-5005. We hope to see you all in St. Louis in June of 2002! I have a crafters tent that I want to sell, but it does not fit into your 'sales' category. It is a "Protector' by Flourish Company. The back curtain drops down from the roof, and the 3 side curtains are detachable. Total size 10' X 10'. I am located near Pittsburgh, so shipping would be a problem - expensive at least. If anyone is interested please e-mail me at bachembg@kiski.net. If it sells through WW, David will get his commission. Ruth Emberg in lovely PA %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Stuff Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2001 8:46 PM From: Tony Stubblefield To: David Collins/Weavers Words Joy - about hand pounded ash - Don't be fooled even with a mechanical trip hammer there is a lot of actual hand work that goes into processing brown ash from a log. Hand feeding the log through the hammer and then peeling off the splint is just as labor intensive. Since you are able to process log faster than with a sledgehammer you don't get the repetitive injuries to your shoulder and hand. I realize you probably know all this, but for the sake of the other readers I just wanted people to understand that "pounded ash", whether with a sledge hammer or a mechanical trip hammer is still the same end material as opposed to machine cut ash veneer strips that are cut from a board. Actually I am quite jealous that you have the opportunity to pound your own ash splint. While we don't have brown ash here in MO we do have white oak, but with living in St. Louis City I don't think they would appreciate it much if I went over to the city park and cut down a log to drag back to my house. The park rangers are just funny like that. Good luck with the trip hammer. Let us know how it comes along. I finally have the pictures up from my workshops with Martha Wetherbee. http://www.tetranet.net/users/deanandtony/mw2001.html Both classes were full and we all had a great time. We had lots of returning weavers this year so it was fun to get caught up with everybody. As always everyone's basket turned out beautifully and will be something they will cherish forever. Martha teased everyone with the baskets for 2002 and now no one can wait for next year. If you want to see a sneak preview of what we will be making next year I have photos on the bottom of the page. I took plenty of photos this year, but unfortunately I didn't get a group shot from either class. Well, I hope everyone's summer is going well. I can't believe how fast it is going though. Take care and happy weaving, Tony Stubblefield St. Louis, MO http://www.JASkets.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% That's All For Now Folks.
