I learned to weave right-handed and it always felt "right". So I just tuck in the first weaver for a left-handed child (or adult) student and have them choose which direction feels "right". Then I watch for a row or two. If it seems as though they're having an awkward time, I switch the direction for them. Many of us lefties do certain activities right-handed and you don't know which they are until you try. The fact that your granddaughter had a great time weaving shows that you taught her the way that feels best to her. Re: "SALE into SUMMER" Sale We're having a Biggie. Thanks for all of the wonderful e-mails and great comments about this years IBA Convention. We owe a great Big Thanks to all of the volunteers that helped make this event a success! Coordinating with Lynn Pawley was a ton of fun (lots of work) and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Some of my best memories will be seeing old friends and those I met just this year. I want to thank Lynn for asking me to coordinate with her... you were right Lynn, it was fantastic!!! The Basket Bucks auctions were pretty wild Thursday evening, but I think almost everyone had a fun time... and that was the whole idea. It was something we did just for fun and entertainment. With each auction the excitement seemed to just get better... I wouldn't have missed this for anything in the world... I have decided to pass the torch onto one of the coordinators of next year's convention. They need to experience the fun and excitement.... I talked to Elaine and she said she will practice her auctioneers skills... so be sure to volunteer your time next year to earn those basket bucks!!! I would also like to thank my husband Mark. Without him I could not have done it... And a big thanks to my dad J.B. Mark & my dad trucked over the convention goods on Tuesday. And my mom worked the vendor/teacher hospitality room on Saturday... I had my whole family working this convention and they enjoyed every minute. Thanks to all of you that attended. The teachers were great, the vendors had lots of new things and the attendees enjoyed themselves. I would like to thank Sharon Klusmann for the beautiful swap basket she made for me. It a file folder basket, including hanging file folders, a pattern that she wrote and also sent along... you can see the basket and the pattern on her website: http://www.sharonklusmann.com It sits nicely on my computer desk and is decorated with cranberry tulip flowers on the front, matches my weaving loft colors perfectly. She filled the basket with a Cat's Meow Village Piece, Olde Town Hall from Tallmadge Ohio, where she lives and a trio of laser cut hearts tie-on. I also enjoyed reading her bio, I feel like I have made a new friend. I have been out of the swaps for awhile and Sharon made it a pleasure to get right back into the fun. Many, Many thanks Sharon! Then each person sent their half-finished basket to another basket maker, who coiled an additional 2-4 hours on it to complete. Well, that was the plan, but I think many people spent a lot more time than that on the project. As we are a coiling group, each basket had to have coiling, but other techniques were allowed to be incorporated. The completed basket was sent to a third person. Each person started a basket, finished a basket, and received a basket, which had been worked on by 2 different people. We posted photos of the half-finished, and the completed baskets. Here they are: http://pineneedlegroup.tripod.com/6photos.html This was a very fun and challenging way to structure the exchange. The style of each basketmaker is very different, and for all of us it was quite a learning process. For me, an unparalleled one. This has stimulated my basket making in ways I had not thought possible, and been so satisfying. We carry a clear acrylic stamp (you can see right through it) with a fish. It's about 1" square. You can ink the stamp in one color and paint or ink over the design on the stencil strip or ink the stamp with different colors and put that on the stencil strip. I will be ordering more designs as they are available (all will be around 1" square). One design for the next order will be a tiny log cabin. If you are interested in trying the stamps, let me know and I'll see what other designs I can get for you. She has undergone two surgeries since returning from teaching at the Indiana Basketmakers Association Convention and has been hospitalized for several days. Her health situation has been very serious the last few days, but she is now showing some improvement. Her recovery process will take several months. I have no way of knowing at this point as to when she will be able to respond to your requests for patterns, but I'm sure she will respond as soon as she possibly can. Thanks for your understanding. Roger Lyons (Sandra's husband) %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Bicycle Baskets Date: Sun, 20 May 2001 22:32:47 -0500 From: Karen Booth To: David Collins Janice, I have seen a couple bicycle baskets go by but they seemed to fit best on the old fashioned bikes without all the cabling for brakes in front of the handlebars. I think you would find that most any tote basket woven shorter than usual and as wide as your bicycle will allow will fit the bill, just try to keep the number of spokes in either direction an odd number. Say 5 spokes x 9 spokes. I make leather handles and can make some straps with buckles for you once you decide how long they need to be. If you create a new pattern we can work up a price and carry the straps as a regular item. Weave your basic tote basket up one row shorter than your bicycle will allow, you don't want the front wheel to rub on it. Decide how wide you need to place your straps to secure the basket evenly, as far apart as possible, and tuck the two spokes nearest this placement. Weave in your final rim keeper row and rim the basket as usual. Now you should have two spaces where you can slip in a leather strap under and around the rim, around your handlebars and to the top. If you have buckle straps you can just snug up the buckle till the basket is secure. If you really want to stabilize the basket and help to keep it from tipping with an uneven load, you may want to add a third strap near the base of the basket sideways around a center spoke and the upright that holds the handlebars (if you do this be sure to double up the spoke that will have the strap around it.) One pattern I tried had an extra strap on it so you could take the basket off the bike, carry it into the store, load it up, and rebuckle it back onto the bike. I found I had great difficulty rebuckling the basket on with it fully loaded, but if you wanted such a strap, I make those too. If you are interested in leather straps please check out my web site at www.homesteadheirlooms.com I just dug through my pattern stash and can't seem to find my bicycle basket patterns. I'll check at my friend's home she's got at least 6times the patterns I have. My grandfather, at 80 years old, used to tell me you never stop learning...and he's right. It was also so nice to add a face to all the girls that are on the weavers words and I was surprised there were so many. I made a beautiful quadtrefoil lidded, catshead basket that stole my heart. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I first saw it at the Weatherbees shop for $1250.00 and told my husband that I would give my right hand to own it...thank God that didn't happen!!! But I never dreamed that I'd be able to make it in my wildest dreams...my thanks to Dianne Stannton. She's an excellent teacher! I just received my AMB conference packet in the mail today and boy did I give the people at the post office a show. I was surprised to have a package, anything they could not physically shove into the tiny P.O. Box, waiting for me. I was thinking it was something from an other group I am affiliated with but NO it was my convention packet. I screamed, whooped, hollered and did a happy dance in front of everyone. If the guy hand in me the package had not taken a few steps back I would have kissed him good! I am sooooooo excited. It has been raining here for a few weeks straight and it is quite depressing but with my convention packet my world just got a little sunny. Well enough time on the computer, I need to decide what classes I want. My friends and I have always talked about opening a little shop where I can sell my baskets and give classes, Deb can sell her hand poured candles, birdhouses, and other crafts, and my sister can sell her quilted things. If anyone is interested in seeing how its coming so far, I put some pics on my website: http://www.sassykatbaskets.com/shop.html. Talk about a lot of work! I still have boxes and boxes of things to unpack and set out and am looking for people to teach other craft classes. It's in a little antiques complex, with an old train depot, a book barn, and a little café in an old Florida Cracker style house. Toooo cute! I've discovered that advertising costs way more than rent - so, I'm asking... how do you advertise inexpensively? Before this, I always did shows and the sponsor did most of the advertising, or the host shop did the advertising. I'm finding that part to be so much harder to figure out than actually running the shop is! Anyone care to share their ideas? It is a large market basket with a filled in base and with dyed blue reed for an accent. It is both attractive and functional and I have already put it to use. Also included were some goodies; particularly enjoyed the soaps that Lynda's children made. I really enjoy the swaps; it's a special occasion every time a basket arrives. The 10th Stowe Basketry Festival is now history; had a great time! Learned a few more "HOT TIPS" and made more new friends. Am now looking forward to my next basket venture which will be the annual summer retreat in Suffield, CT sponsored by the Northeast Basketmakers Guild which will be held in August.
