I received my swap basket from Susan Casey this week. She had warned me that she had wrapped it unusually. When I came home and saw it, I was so grateful the way she wrapped it. It was a big box and to make sure it stayed together, she put plastic bags around it. I have great difficulty due to rheumatoid arthritis picking large items up, but this was easy to pick up because I could grab hold of the plastic! The basket Susan wove me is so awesome!! I have not seen anything like it before. It is a footed basket, which is long and narrow with a handle. I have many ideas as to what to use it for; filling with flowers to put on the hearth, using it to hold CD's, the ideas are endless. She also included a big hank of braided seagrass, a can of Weaver's Stain and basket shears! Here 4-page answer to the questions was so interesting! Thank you, Susan, for a truly beautiful basket!! Unfortunately, I won't be in Vermont visiting family until July 23rd and I have to leave Aug 5th to comeback home. I was hoping something basketry was going on, but it didn't work out that way. I love the waxed linen, and have been just twining the bottom. I did another project and the twining worked out much better. Not as much twist!! Thanks for the offer of your help. I am heart sick that I can't get to any conventions or weave ins until next year. I hope you all write in about the Weave Fest in Wisconsin and IBA next week. I sent an e-mail to Anette Meier in NY, my swap partner, on Friday to let her know her basket was in the mail. I received an e-mail back from her telling me she had done the same that day and she gave me her web site address. Today I checked out her web site and thought it was just fabulous - you should also check it out if you haven't recently. It is: www.ahmbaskets.com She sells beautifully woven baskets, both Nantucket, Shaker and Country baskets. A VERY talented lady!! I decided to write her back and let her know how wonderful I thought her site was even though I didn't think my basket was coming until the next day. While I was typing - her basket came - how funny! It is a wonderfully made round twill using space-dyed 1/4" and a bean pot handle. It will look wonderful in any room in my house!! It couldn't be more perfect. She included inside the greatest little paper baskets with a paper doll tucked inside holding two baskets and a "thank you" card inside. She tucks them into her customer's orders - how special. She also gave me quite a supply of them to use myself, along with cute little basket noodles, a sweetgrass braid and magnet. HOW FUN IS THIS SWAP!!! I want to thank Lynda again for all her hard work and taking the time to match up people and come up with the questions for the questionnaire. I wanted to let everyone know how much fun I had at Lake Country Basket Fest this past weekend. First of all, thanks to all the committee members who did so much work to make the event go so smoothly. Thanks to all the teachers who took time out of their busy schedules to come and teach, and a special thanks to Cathryn Peters, aka the Wicker Woman for being such wonderful teacher and an amusing guest speaker! It's easy to tell you love what you do and feel strongly about teaching the next generation of seat weavers all you know. Last but not least, thanks to the vendors for packing up all your stuff, coming to SE WI, and letting us browse, touch, pick up, and buy whatever you were selling, then having to pack up what was left and drive back home. Without all of you, Fest would not be the same! Now, HI to all of you that I met in person. Some of you for the first time, and some of you it was nice to see again. Now quit reading this and go finish those baskets! Deb Mather - I read the last WW and read your post describing the swap basket you received and recognized your name. You sat next to me in Rich Prange's Antler Hen Basket class. Did you finish your's yet? I finished at home, and after looking at it from far away, I guess it's not that bad after all. I hope your drive back to MN went OK, even if the back end of your truck was packed to the brim! Now, go get out that big antler you have and make something! I expect David will be posting a picture of it soon. Rowena - while I'm no expert in round reed, in fact, round reed and I really don't get along very well, Flo Hoppe has a couple great round reed books out there. You can probably find them by going to David's WW web site, and clicking on the Basket Bookstore link. Then do a search of books using Hoppe as the key word. (David gets a commission for each book purchased from Amazon.com through his link.) There are many other books/patterns, but this might be more comprehensive. Kim Leppin - did you finish your chair yet? I want to sit in it when I come over to clean our gourds. Bert - Your neighbors must get a kick out of some of your adventures! They must be wondering what that lady is doing digging around by the roots of those downed trees, and carting bags and boxes of stuff away! What a sight! But I bet you get some really interesting weaving materials though. To those of you going to IBA and Stowe - don't forget to report back here. We love to hear everyone's adventures. Kathey Ervin - BEAUTIFUL baskets! Let us know when you get more pictures up. Chrystal - check out www.ncbasketmakers.com for info on their convention. Next year it's March 21-24. Their site has member info and explains when you need to be a member by to get a convention brochure. Till next time - Dianne Gleixner, Brookfield WI (SE WI), where it seems like we've only seen the sun for a couple hours in the past week. This basket is woven on bamboo hoops and the God's eyes are done in seagrass. The weaving is done in peach round reed, seagrass and a deeper twisted paper. It's absolutely awesome. I also received some great tuck-ins that will be going right into my "studio" (really basement work area). Thanks again, Cindy. I love it!! P.S. This along with the fact that often times the basket is started for you is the reason I don't take classes at convention (I only go to shop). I want to learn "how" to make the basket not just weave the body of it. I get approached all the time to teach at conventions, but with the time limitations and the push to have big class sizes I always refuse. When I teach a class it is almost always 8 hours even for a small basket. For myself I much prefer to attend a weekend or even better week-long workshop. I can make just as many baskets in the same time frame, but there isn't the rush to get out of the way of the next class and they are usually cheaper when you get right down to it. Also I know exactly what basket I am signing up for not throwing my name in a lottery and hoping I get the classes I want. In the workshops I have taken everyone always gets their baskets completed unless they choose to leave early before the class is over. I just think that in almost all baskets the beginning and the completion are the most important steps and should never be rushed or jump started, the middle part is just weaving. Though I do think your idea of a rimming class is a good one. I have heard of people doing rimming and handling workshops before. Dolores - about classes on Nantucket - Try Tim Parsons' web site http://www.nantucketbaskets.com/ He is an incredible Nantucket basket maker who teaches classes on the island. I think he even will do private classes and since you have 6 weavers that might work out great to have your own custom classes! Rowena - about round reed baskets - check out any of the books by Flo Hoppe or Kari Lonning. They are both experts in wickerwork. About wetting ribs - When I make or teach a ribbed basket I do all my whittling and insertion of spokes/ribs dry. I think the reed carves much better when it is dry and will hold a better curve when dry. The only rim I wet the round reed is to relax the coil when I first open it and I may have the students mist the spokes just to keep them every so slightly damp so that they don't break them. Secondary spokes insert much easier when dry too. I find that if the spokes are too wet and floppy that the basket shape is too easily distorted by too much tension. This is just how I like to do it and with everything whatever works best for the individual is the way to go. Well, even though "MY COSTS ARE OUTRAGEOUS!", according to one person, both of the Martha Wetherbee classes I am hosting this June are full. If anyone was dragging their feet about registering for one or both of the classes I will be starting a waiting list in case someone has to drop out. Hopefully we will be doing this again next year so watch my web site for the teaser on the baskets for 2002. It's delightful to log on to my email account and see that a new Weaver's Words has arrived. And I envy all the talk of conventions and guilds---maybe next year. What a treat I received last week. I felt like it was Christmas when I saw my neighbor pulling out about a dozen yucca bushes. She allowed me to haul them home for weaving. Actually, I used my four year old's red wagon. What a sight I must have been as I made about ten trips up and down the street hauling what other folks would assume was garbage! The teenage boys who were doing the work were both flabbergasted and delighted that I wanted the bushes. Their nutsy neighbor saved them the work of making a trip to the city dump! I've learned that there are dozens of varieties of yucca, but I do not know which variety I have. It's leaves are dark green and smooth on the edges, with a very sharp point on the end. The plants were about 4' high and the individual spikes (leaves) are about a yard long. So right now my *husband's* half of the garage is literally filled with these beautiful plants with which I'm sure I can weave. (I've promised him I'll have it cleared out before he gets back from his business trip to *Hawaii*!!!) I've begun carefully pulling the leaves from the stalk and throwing away any damaged ones. And I've been laying them out on the warm driveway to dry. My questions.... Am I going about the preparation process correctly? One book I saw briefly noted that yucca can be woven either fresh or dried. Does it shrink when it dries? Does anyone know if any specific care is needed in storing yucca leaves? And mostly.... Have any of you woven with this material? Can you give me weaving hints/tips? Or do you know any good resource material to which I might refer? Thanks guys, Carla T. Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 02:05:43 -0000 From: "Alene Miller" To: davidC@iei.net I just had to share with all of you. Dianne Walbeck was my swap partner and she sent me the cutest little stool done with cane. The pattern on the seat runs in a diagonal pattern across the seat. It is done in a 4/4 pattern with 1/4 inch material. The legs and rungs are sanded and has a light stain. If that was not enough, she also packed the box with goodies from Okinawa, Japan. From the sweats, soap, and my first CHOP STICKS, but she also sent two issues of "Okinawa Living". It was also a great treat to see the Japan's newspaper. What a thoughtful and talented person. To Lynda Crowe - A big thank you for all of your work as coordinator of this basket swap. With out you, this swap would not have happened. To David - Thank you for your work you do on hosting Weavers Word for all of us out here. Because without you, these swaps would not be possible. You have earned many gold stars to brighten your life. Thank you again. I have always wondered what one was when they were being discussed on this forum and now I know! It is a really cute idea! Thank you so much, Maureen! She also included a cute sticky notepad (with a basket theme of course) and a pretty stars n stripes kitchen towel. (She must have known how ratty my kitchen towels were!) Anyway, I loved everything. Swaps are such fun! By the way, Maureen, I emailed you a thank you immediately upon receiving the basket but my email was returned, so I will be sending you a thank you in the old fashioned way. Thanks go to Lynda as well for the big job of swap co-ordination. Higgins" To: davidc@iei.net I want to let everyone know that I received a beautiful basket from Jay Hagelberg of Manchester, Iowa! It was waiting for me to open when I arrived home yesterday. Jay made a beautiful round swing handled basket, embellished with rows of 3-rod-waling done in gorgeous space dyed reed in the middle on the side and on the top, then rimmed with the same space dyed reed, all done on a slotted wood base. The colors of the space dyed reed go beautifully in my home - gold, wine and green. Jay is a very talented weaver and anyone who is lucky enough to receive a basket from him is truly blessed. Thank you Jay - I love the basket and the extra goodies that you included - a bar of handmade Magnolia soap and a bag of some delicious crispy little round tubes that were filled with a chocolate concoction. Needless to say, those didn't last long!! Thanks you too Lynda for all of the hard work in organizing this swap and keeping track of everyone - we all appreciate your efforts! Wanted to get back into the swing of things. I have been either sick or busy lately. Cathryn Peters: still want to talk with you on business matters. I have been doing so well with my chair weaving, that it will be necessary. And I hope to be able to work in a basket or two out of the antlers I got at a local church sale. They are small, but good to start with. Can't make the basket show May 18-20, so I will have to catch you at a later date. I am looking for some help. I have a piece of wicker in for repair, and I am trying to bend a reed larger than 1/2". What do I have to soak this in to let it bend. The old piece has a curlicue and 2 bends, and is used for hip support. Any ideas? Well, it is back to work. I have been working on hickory chairs from a wilderness museum in Oklahoma called Woolaroc, and they have been keeping me busy. As they say, 'be careful what you wish for'! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: ... Date: Sun, 13 May 2001 08:48:18 -0700 From: "Dawn" To: Hi all, I don't think I have posted before, I love to read all this and I used to weave a lot and would really like to be in a basket swap. However I have lost the urge to do much of anything creative since I was indirectly hit by Lightning 2 years ago. I would like to also mention that this June 18-22, the National Weather Service has declared that week as National Lightning Safety awareness Week and if anyone is interested in how to keep themselves and/or their loved ones from ever having to find out what the results of a strike is go to their website and check this out. www.crh.noaa.gov/pub & www.uic.edu/labs/lightninginjury I am hoping someday that I can weave again as I miss it so much. Take care, Dawn Phillips %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket Swap Date: Sun, 13 May 2001 15:43:32 -0400 From: "j.carreon" To: "David Collins" Hi Everybody, I received my basket from Joanne Howard in record time. She mailed it Friday the 4th of May and I received it with the Monday mail. I thought that was in record time. She received my basket on Tuesday, which I'm so glad because I always wait until the last possible moment. Anyway back to the basket: it's a very large market basket with a braid. I like it very much I can't wait to fill it up with my stuff. That is after I empty it with the many things Joanne sent: a picture of herself after she went shopping at target and Michael's in NC (while at NCBA convention) a tea towel, shell necklace in a cute container, a small purse made out of palm, chocolate covered macadamia nuts, 2 packages of cookies, snacks and a wonderful book "The Guide To Basket Weaving" with coconut palms. As you all can see I have to get busy and empty the basket before I can get mot use of it. Joanne thank you so much for being my basket swap buddy. And for the wonderful basket full of goodies. Lynda Crowe thank you for coordinating this swap I know it takes a lot of time and we are grateful you took the time to bring us together one more time for this basket swap!!!!!!!!!!! You must be a member before September to be able to attend convention. This is in order to receive the brochure by November 15th, which has all the information about convention. The membership dues a $25 and membership begins in July 1 through June 30. I reread the bylaws and dues are subject to change by the Board vote. Membership chairperson: Gertrude Hundley, basket@sandtech.net The NCBA Convention was great don't let anyone tell you different. I met and spoke with Joanne and Lois and they are wonderful ladies. I even roomed with someone I had never met and we had a great time. Terry DeGrave from Green Bay, Wisconsin after convention she went on to visit the three lighthouses that are on the North Carolina coast. On her way back to Raleigh, NC she stop at my house we went out to lunch and I took to Handworks owned by Kathy Libby in Havelock which is where I take classes and weave baskets. Good things do happen when you attend convention. I think I have said enough in round about way. Thank you David for this forum and thank you everyone for reading. Kourkounakis\)" To: "David Collins" Hi Weavers- Just returned from Indy convention, and have discovered 2 errors in my new Tea in Amish Country pattern. On page 3 of the pattern, I omitted a row of teal 11/64. The color pattern should be: 1 row of each color in this order - navy, purple, teal, mauve, teal, purple, navy. Also on pg 3; the lasher should be 2 yds long rather than 1 & 1/2 yds. I apologize for the confusion, and anyone who purchased the pattern or a kit at convention can email me privately. I will be glad to send you a corrected page 3. Happy weaving!
