Even though we had lots of time, we are coming down the home stretch and have many to go out yet. I have only been notified that one will be going out late due to extenuating circumstances. These things do happen on occasions. So, I take it that everyone is just sitting back waiting for May 4th to run to post their baskets? :^) I hope that is it. If you have sent or received your basket and forgot to notify me, please do so, so I can mark you off the list. I have really enjoyed this swap, it is tremendous work, so please make my job as easy as possible by keeping me up to date. Thanks so much, Weave on... Just getting back into the swing of weaving after a couple months off to help with a Middle School production of the Wizard of Oz. It was great but I'm ready to weave! I have a question for all you teachers out there. I have been to ONE convention so I am far from experienced, but I heard from many people who had my same experience of not getting their baskets completely finished in class. In fact I don't believe that anyone in either of my 2 classes finished their baskets while at the class. I love my baskets and have since finished them to the best of my ability but wonder if having the instructor there for the finishing and rimming would have helped? Have any of you considered teaching a Convention Class on rimming techniques or braided boarder techniques? One that concentrates on a few different techniques. I can rim a basket and have read about many different techniques (and some are quite confusing to read even with pictures)! However, being a visual/manual learner I would love to have an expert show me how they do it, how to use waxed linen to rim, how to make braided boarders etc. I know this would be kind of tricky since you really need baskets to RIM before you can teach rimming but just wanted to throw out the idea to see if anyone could make it work? Thanks! I'm guilty of that imprecision myself. I am trying to use 'looping' or 'knotless netting' when discussing the most common stitches used in basketry, but because of my historic textile interests, 'naalbinding' creeps in when my attention wanders. Are you familiar with the Nalbinding list at www.Yahoogroups.com? I think I may have seen you post something there. << See that's the thing: in English, 'naalbinding' is most commonly translated as 'knotless netting' and never (that I've seen) in books as 'needle sewing/binding' even if that is the literal translation. It is done that way in many historic textile books I have. And there seems to be overlap between the types used in basketry and the types used in textiles. For example, the simple single-loop diagram that Jonas showed on the website is *the same* pattern that I have seen described as simple naalbinding with wool and it is the same pattern that I have made mittens, hats and socks from! Of course there are fancier, lacier looping that would not be appropriate as a mitten technique, just as there are more complicated weaves that probably wouldn't lend itself to making baskets. But, the term in English is the same, and the simple single-loop technique is the same in both cases. You get it nice and wet, Let it drip out and wind it on curlers, and when it dries- it stays in place of course that is just in a perfect world! Another rib "trick" other than masking tape is putting in perhaps just 4 in both sides (for your classic basket), using very small reed to "lock them in place" and then adding a few more ribs along side the already in ribs. With some finesse you will be able to wiggle them in when you only have a row or two holding them in. I had to learn how to do this, as I do the Renaissance Faire out in California - and I demonstrate all day. Needless to say - they did not have "YE OLDE" masking tape during this time period. SO - I had to make some things up as I went along. I also use my lap to hold the other end of the basket firmly-against the unsecured side of the ribs "popping out" or sproinging all over the place - it does really help. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 4 I. 93 Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 01:29:54 -0500 From: Roberta Comstock To: David Collins "Weavers Words" Vol. 4 Iss. 93 David - Here we are at the end of Volume 4 and nearly 1600 readers! Congratulations to you for keeping us going and growing, and many many thanks! Huzzah! My latest basket adventure is going to a nearby construction site to gather materials. The trees have been uprootend and knocked down and there is a sign posted: free firewood - you cut, you haul. I expect to make several trips in the next few days. There are Siberian elms and mulberries and several other kinds of trees. The mulberry root bark I stripped today has the typical orangey-yellow color, but with an added bonus of bright purple random horizontal stripes. It's going to be a hoot to work with! The mulberry roots themselves aren't good for weaving once you take the bark off them; they are soft and brittle when dry. But there are quite a few fine roots on some of the grubbed out stumps, so I cut some of those for small twining projects. The elm roots seem to be tough enough. Tomorrow, I must remember my work gloves, some wire cutters, a handsaw, and SUN Block! Anyone wanting to stop by either going to or after Stowe, I'd love to spend some time together. Send an email for directions. Joanne - waxed linen - great choice! I have baskets and necklaces that I make with waxed linen. Twisting problem? Are you twining or triple twining? As with round reed, the constant weave in one direction wants to make the spokes go in the same direction. Check each row - tweak as needed. Are you going to Stowe? I'd be happy to spend some time with you & show you what I do. Have a great week - another day of warmth & sun - the snow is gone. While doing an Internet search today, I ran across a company that appears to be selling baskets from Basketville. They state the baskets are "handcrafted", however nowhere do they state that they are imported! I sent them an e-mail urging them to stop selling Basketville baskets, and also asked why they don't reveal the baskets origins. The Nantucket baskets they sell even state that they are made on molds designed by Nate Taylor. (For those of you who may have missed the topic a couple months back, Nate has "sold out" and is allowing his name to be used on imported Nantucket baskets being made in China.) I believe this company is trying to fool the public by not revealing their baskets are imports, and actually highlighting the fact that they are made with New England white ash! I'm asking all of you who care about the basket weavers in the US to contact this company to ask them to either stop selling imported baskets, or to clearly state that they are not made in the US. The name of the company is The Home Comfort Shop, (www.homecomfortshop.com) and they are located in Milton WI. I don't always have such strong feelings about things, but this subject just hits a raw nerve with me. On a much happier note, I'm looking forward to Lake Country Basket Guild's Basket Fest this weekend, and having Cathryn Peters (Wicker Woman) as our guest speaker! It's going to be a great 3-day weekend of weaving and meeting new people. Our guild is located in SE WI, and we always welcome new members. For membership information, you can contact me, I'm co-chair of membership. We meet monthly, and have our Basket Fest each spring. We are fortunate enough to have wonderful teachers who come in from across the country. Some of you teachers and members are out there reading this, see you then. How did she know I could really use it right now? I am going to Lake Country Basket Fest in WI this weekend and to IBA next week! What a perfect addition to everything I have to take... I'll be doing a lot of willow, so I won't need my gigantic tool tote. My mom keeps trying to steal this new one from me! She also wove a Miniature egg basket on a leather thong. I don't have the patience for mini's but surely appreciate them when I get them. I have done a few (tho' not THAAT small!), so I know how much work goes into them!
