I took a class in "nol binding" through our lace guild here in Wisconsin some years back. It is a form of stitching not unlike the buttonhole stitch but done on a larger scale. In the class we took, our instructor had us using the hole end of an old fashioned tooth brush that had been sharpened to a point. The loops were worked one at a time into each other and/or into a previously worked chain. It was described as an old Scandinavian craft. The examples we saw were as varied as sandals, rugs, mittens and milk strainers. I found an exquisite shawl done in a fine wool yarn in an antique shop. If the originator of the question could email me I will try to find my instructions and get you a picture of the work in the shawl. If you are that kind of start is very difficult to keep the ribs in for the first couple rows. A "ear" where you actually make holes to insert the spokes is probably the best kind. I teach the method described on my web site to beginners all the time and we never have problem with spokes coming out. You will want an nice long, approximately 1.5", taper to your ribs. This will give you the nicest look. There is also a diagram for a "filling-in" process to help compensate for the bulbous shape of a buttocks basket. Check it out too. http://www.tetranet.net/users/deanandtony/filling-in.html Don't give up and good luck. Well, as I think I might have mentioned earlier, I am doing my first big craft/art fair this fall. It is at a private prep school here in St. Louis so it has a pretty upscale attendance. I am hoping to do well. The problem is that I usually only make about a half dozen basket a year to sell, and that is a good year. I am planning on having about 25 baskets ready. Now I know a lot of you talk about having 100-200 baskets per show, but I haven't even made that many baskets in the last 10 years! Also, the baskets I am making to sell are going to average around $100 each so I think 25 will be plenty and anyway all I can have ready. It has been kind of fun weaving this much lately. Normally it is so hard for me to set aside very much time to weave. Now I have a pressing reason to weave so I am making the time. I still haven't found a workshop or class to take this summer. Normally I would have my week-long basket vacation plans all worked out, but this year I can't find anything that fits around my other commitments. The workshop here at my house with Martha Wetherbee my end up being it or I may just have to pack up my supplies and go away for a week and weave on my own. As long as I am away from the phone is fine with me. Well hope everyone's flowers are coming up in the garden. Boy have things changed!!! Could someone tell me when I have to sign up to qualify for 2002 convention book, I am sure I have missed the mark for this year. > I can help you with the IBA information. You can go to the IBA Web Site and print a membership application and send it in. You have to have the form in by September 1 to get the initial convention mailing. After that date we will definitely take more new or renewing members but there is a late fee involved at that time and receiving the convention book is subject to availability. If you want a 2001 convention book - I still have some. If you will send me $3.00 to cover the cost of postage I will get one off to you right away. We're glad to have you as a member and hopefully you can also attend one of the IBA conventions one year. The 2001 IBA convention is just around the corner - May 9-13. If anyone still wants to attend we'd love to hear from you. Also, if you are already attending and wish to purchase additional classes we can help you out there too. Send me an email for class openings. Many times people don't make the ear big enough to hold the ribs. The ear I like to use, because it seems to have less problems, is the Gods eye. I also weave the first 4 or 5 rows after the ear with 1/4" flat (which is usually a continuation of the weaver I am using for the ear). Once I get one side stabilized (the 4 or 5 rows) I then do the other side. With the primary ribs now stabilized you can then continue your weaving and add your secondary ribs. I hope this helps. Rib baskets are great baskets and can be a lot of fun to weave. It works great, ribs stay in place better, easier to cut that slant where you insert it and looks great too. Now that I have more experience with rib baskets I'm back to doing some with round reed and have no problem. Eileen Mirsberger East Troy Basketry 2082 Church St. P.O. I had my husband look at the pattern (this was months ago - I had just the initial 7 knots sitting around) and he figured out the starting part for me :) Sometimes a fresh perspective does the trick. I actually worked on it this weekend. Thanks to Susi Nuss's great illustrations, I think I have the knotting part. However, I think I pulled way too tight. (I hate gaps - I'll have to just adapt and deal with it I guess). So I think I'll start over, of course now I'm going to have to figure out how I started it the last time :) Angie The Country Seat http://www.countryseat.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket Material Specials Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 09:09:30 EDT From: Basktsuply@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Hi Everyone: I have recently started to publish monthly specials on our website! While looking for upcoming conferences that would be easy for me to get to I discovered that in October there will be the AMB conference, only an hour away from my in-laws house. My wonderful, darling, helpful, and considerate husband has given me the "go ahead and enjoy yourself". This is so exciting. I have already sent off my membership and hope to get a mailing sometime in May. If anyone thought the ladies from Hawaii were excited imagine one coming all the way from a tiny island south of Japan will be. After telling my in-laws about possibly going they too are excited. Ever since they took a tour of the Noresta store and my continued woven gifts, they are have gone basket crazy. The more experience I get and new ideas I am exposed to the fuller their house will be with baskets. I will also get to meet my new sister-in-law while I am visiting. If anyone is thinking about this conference, I know it is early but I need to start planning, maybe needing a roomie or something? Now if I could just get that song out of my head, "I'm So Excited". I found Retayne and Synthrapol at a nearby quilt shop. The Synthrapol is cheaper. Are they close to the same but just made by different companies? Would you prefer one over the other? I just finished a tote basket: Take Along Tote pattern by Susan Vogel. It was easy, sturdy, and a filled in base. Just made my day when something goes along that well! We could exchange ideas about patterns that work out well. Billie: thanks for the great ideas for guild meetings. I'll mention your ideas at the Deer Creek meeting. If we do the basket that will have different techniques in it, done at many meetings, can we call it a "Billie" basket? It was wonderful! She was a guest teacher at Quad Cities Basketry Guild Friday and Saturday. She had many great tips and the Fannypak basket is great. The technique she taught is both fun and easy, two of my favorite words! I understand she is teaching at Silver Dollar City, if she has room in her class and you can, be sure to sign up, you won't regret it. And to Bert, thank you so much for coming to Davenport, Iowa!
