Choate Basketry List" To: List Member J. Choate Basketry List - http://www.jchoatebasketry.com Think Elvis and repeat after me..."thank you, thank you very much". As the season comes to a close it's nice to review my mushing memories of the year and get ready to put them into "cold storage". First things first. This year was the first time I ran the dogs in the moonlight. All the "moose monsters" I had conjured up we're put to bed as the only apparitions I saw were of myself back lit on the trees from snow machine lights, that was scary enough. This year was the first time I was made aware that I've hit the half way mark on the biological clock and body parts aren't as elastic as they once were. Where previously muscles and strain meant "buff" appearance, now cold muscles and strain mean no attachment of muscles. This year was the first time I hitched up ten dogs and lived to tell the tale. A "weenie" musher for years running only a four to six dog team, I finally hit the big time and gratefully not a big tree in the process. Top that off with a wonderful week of showing off my back yard at the Alaska Bush Basketry Retreat and I couldn't think of a better way to end the season. If you'd like information on how to attend the ABBR in 2002the online workshop brochure is now available. The IBA convention is May 9-13 in Indianapolis, Indiana. We currently have 65 instructors with 150+ class offerings. There are still openings in many of the class selections at this time. You must become a member of IBA to attend, as well as register for convention. Please email me directly and I will provide you with a list of classes, which still have openings. You can visit the IBA web site for membership information as well as viewing the convention brochure selections on line. Tammy, One material that is relatively cheap and interesting to work with is paper splint -for the spokes. You can get it coils that are 1/2 inch wide and it makes a good spoke for small baskets. You don't have to soak it, it cuts with sturdy scissors and there's no right/wrong side. Use 3/16" or 1/4" flat and the kids can do a continuously woven basket that lasts a long time. Kid's will do well with whatever the teacher presents them. Good luck. Tony: Added congrats on your winning float. Must have been a lot of work and fun! Tammy: regarding the basket pattern swap. Since I coordinated the first one thought I'd fill you in. As far as I know there was never any controversy. After some discussion we all agreed we were not infringing on any pattern writers, as we were simply exchanging new, duplicate patterns we had all purchased. It came about because some of us had mentioned that over the years we found we had bought the same pattern twice, so we decided to swap these new, duplicate patterns. We did not swap old, used patterns. The first swap attracted about 30+ people. Then Joe Conroy in RI coordinated the 2nd swap. No one offered to lead a 3rd swap. However, that is quite understandable, as most weavers who had duplicate patterns have probably now swapped them. Now we need to wait until enough people go out and goof up and buy duplicate patterns. I'm sure sometime down the line someone else will consider running another duplicate pattern swap...maybe even you. What classes did you take? Who were your teachers? Did your basket(s) turn out as hoped? Did you meet up with other WWer's during the convention? And anything else you can think of. It's always fun reading about stuff I wasn't able to attend but wished I could have! Cynthia in VA - NCBA has a web site at www.ncbasketmakers.com where you can find membership and convention information. Unfortunately, the information on their site is a bit limited, but you should be able to get the basics. Laurie Burns - do you remember what size the basket was that you were looking for? I've seen a number of "wall baskets" that have a wire hanger in the back to hang the basket on. The baskets have been fairly small though, not sure if that's what you were looking for. Check our Baskets of Joy at www.basketsofjoy. They had a free pattern last month for a wall type basket that might have been what you saw, but I don't remember the name and they changed the free pattern. E-mail them and I'm sure they can direct you to the pattern they had up. I also have a pattern very similar to that in one of the books by Deb Blair - It's called Wall basket and is only about 1 inch from front to back and about 5" wide. I'm sure one of the suppliers out there reading this can give you the exact title of the book. (Sorry, I'm at work today, otherwise I'd go look myself.) As for the wire for the back, most of the suppliers carry these. Hope this helps you. Gloria in FL - refer to the NCBA web site listed above. Someone else may be able to tell you about others in your area. Jill - not that's my kind of winter! It's been a pretty mild one here in WI too, but I'm still glad it's over. Although we got our share of snow in December, we were pretty lucky! We'll be cursing the mild winter once the bugs (mosquitoes) start hatching. We need much colder weather to kill the eggs so it's gonna be a buggy summer! I'll just enjoy spring while it's here. I'd like to share with everyone about some books I recently purchased. I was able to get a great deal (50% off) on Kari Lonning's book "The Art of Basketry" and Flo Hoppe's "Contemporary Wicker Basketry" through Guild.com's bookstore. Although it was hard to find from their home page, I'm on their e-mail list so I'm notified of special sales. (This sale was only for two days, sorry) Anyway, I've never even pretended to be very good at weaving with round reed, but wanted to try. These books are fabulous! Kari has great directions to weave double wall baskets, as well as many different types of bases. They both have excellent instructions on changing colors, and different types of weaves. I was so inspired; I actually started around reed basket! That's saying a lot! I've already made a mistake and have to start over, but I'm really hoping to learn! If you've always wanted to weave with round reed, get one or both of these books! I don't mean to say that there aren't other good round reed books, I'm sure there are, but I thought I'd share my thoughts on these two. Also, if you get a chance, check our guild.com's (actually it's now www.ashford.com) basketry pages. There are some incredible baskets on there. One last request before I take up too much space. Get some pictures of you swap baskets taken and get them to David so he can post them on WW and we can all marvel at your work! If you don't have a digital camera or ability to get your photos scanned, send the actual picture to David via snail mail. He'll scan it for you and post to WW. Don't forget to send a SASE so he can send your picture back to you. Thanks. Dianne Gleixner - in SE WI where we had a warm spell over the weekend but back to early spring weather (Low to mid 30s). My spring flowers are starting to poke through the ground. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: (No subject) Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 20:52:51 EST From: AuntPattie@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net WEATHER ALERT North Carolina was hit by Hurricane Joanne last week. Chocolate & Macadamia nuts rained down all around the Raleigh-Durham area. I am, of course, referring to the much anticipated visit of our Hawaiian WW friends Lois Keener & Joanne Howard. The visit was specifically for the NCBA Convention, which was spectacular. It was great to see Joanne again and a real pleasure to meet Lois. I think that Joanne must have packed her clothes in her purse because she surely had two suitcases full of treats & presents for everyone. I think that we all may not fully recover from their visit (I personally hope that I don't). The convention itself was so fun. I had classes with Jenalee Frasier, Joann Kelly Catsos, & Bill Allen. Everyone seemed to have a great time & the mood seemed lighter than I'd seen it before. Maybe it was partly due to that odd weather system from Hawaii. Denise Carlson certainly seemed to have a lot of fun with her more than able group of volunteers. Well done, everyone. I'd like to put a plug in here for the Georgia Guilds. Besides trying to advance our own basketry skills & creativity, we have been dipping our toes into community service using our skills. Last Christmas all of the Georgia Guilds joined forces & wove baskets & ornaments for our local Festival of Trees. A group of our members used these to decorate the tree, which was sold for $600 for the Atlanta Children's Hospitals. One of our members is a breast cancer survivor and at our last meeting we all wove different baskets accented with pink weavers. These will be taken to a local breast cancer rehab center for the patients. None of us is trying to become Mother Theresa or anything but I think that it is a nice thing to do. We also begin to see each other as nicer, giving people. I think that this has had a really good effect on our guild and would recommend it to all of you as an occasional guild project. My arm is tired from patting everyone on the back so I think I'll go cut kits. So if you want to participate, get you information to me. 1. Name 2. Address 3. Phone 4. Is the time allotted enough? 5. Which way do you prefer the swap-round robin, or the way Lois did it? If you know you aren't going to be able to meet the deadline, baskets must be in the mail no later than May 4th, let me know now. That is the only rule I have. Too many rules make it too difficult as far as I am concerned. Keep in mind that it is spring now. If you want to stuff the basket, fine, if not fine. Do whatever 'floats your boat'. Ok, feel free to start weaving now if you want, that gives you over 4 weeks. Everyone should be able to get them out on time. Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 14:57:04 -1000 From: The Keener Clan To: davidc@iei.net Oh, David, your ears must have been burning over the weekend as the WW bunch who were at the convention talked about you--and said nothing but fine things. Yes, I have returned and brought with me a miserable stinker of a cold, so this post will be a brief one. Yes, it was overwhelming--so much to see, do and buy for one who has never been inside a basket supply shop let alone at a convention. I did indeed shop (so much that I had to buy a second backpack--this one on wheels--and ship home 4 boxes to the tune of $200 for boxing, shipping and handling) and didn*t leave anything behind that I wanted (other than a pattern I forgot to buy from Miss Jimmie). New bases, lids, patterns, handles--unbelievable how creative weavers can be! I did enjoy my classes and am still not believing that I wove a Nantucket (now a prized possession that I will never part with). That was my goal--and then wanted to weave something with Irish waxed linen and my rainstick is yet another treasure. So I worked with two different mediums and feel I have grown as a weaver--and that was something important at this stage of my life. But the best part was meeting people and putting faces with those I*ve "met" on WW and have been doing business with for so long. The first person I met (other than Denise and Brenda, who gave us a fine welcome) was Billie Dorris (and this happened while standing in line at the café!). It was a joy to meet Miss Jimmie Kent and Suzanne Moore and Thew Whites and Bob and Mae Etchason and Marilyn Wald and Julie Kleinrath--and Ann Snider and her friend Pam who came along to help. I spent Sunday afternoon with Pam Mullins who I knew from the Virtual Guild and what a sweetie she is. I found that Juanita Carreon has a great sense of humor :-). I met O*Brien Trawick who sent Joanne and I a small nest of angels for our safe trip.--and I know I*m leaving out a lot more, but my memory, which is still jet lagging, is kind of slow. I did have three very special opportunities...my cousin, Mike, whom I haven*t seen in years came to Winston Salem to visit his son, drove to Raleigh and we were able to spend Saturday afternoon together--a real treat for a military brat who has spent most of her life far from family. Also on the trip back, I met up with Betty Swanson in the Minneapolis airport. We have been cyber buddies for 5 years and had not, until yesterday, met. She is a neat lady and it was a pleasure to sit with her for too short a time. And Caroline Prevost, who used to live here and was a sister guild member, came to convention and I had such a neat time visiting with her. And now it is time to get back on schedule and prepare for another air. I*m motivated big time now--and I wanted to thank everyone at the NCBA who made my trip a sheer joy. If you have never gone to convention, do so. There is nothing like being with so many other weavers--it gets your creative juices flowing and strengthens the love you share of your craft. It was worth the fairs, the classes--everything I had to do to get to convention. How could I have forgotten Jill Boles--that neat redheard from Florida? She was one of the neatest women I met at convention--warm, friendly, sharp-witted and very giving. She brought a lot of handles and seagrass and gave it away to anyone who was interested. And Jean May--Susan Reed-Fanfoni--I can*t get over just how nice everyone was. And next year, my husband wants to come along and take a class. He was fascinated with my Nantucket and says he definitely wants to try one. Can*t wait for next year... Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 12:16:01 -0500 From: "ROBERT HAAKE" To: "David Collins" Does anyone know if there is a pattern for a doll's high chair? The only one that I can even envision would have a wooden legs and tray with a woven seat and back. I have never heard of one--just a doll cradle and buggy. Thanks from Ohio where we have had over a foot of snow in the last week. Nancy %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: NC Convention..this is a long one..... Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 12:53:11 -0800 (PST) From: Joanne Howard To: David Collins Aloha, Where do I begin? To all the lurkers out there, and NOW I know who you all are, it was so awesome to meet you. To the two ladies that chased me down in Teachers Marketplace.... thanks, I felt like a rock star!!! I had an incredible experience at NCBA 2001. No matter how many conventions I have the chance to attend in the future, this one will always have special meaning. You always remember your first!! To the crazy guys at HH Perkins...I hope macadamia nut withdrawal is working out ok for you. Joann Kelly Catsos and Deanna Savoy.... I lost my boot! I will send pictures. I wish I had more time to spend with you both. I know I could have learned so much just from picking your brains. You both made my last party night there so much fun. It was awesome to have met you both. Oh Joann, Steve says hi!!!! Denise Carlson and Brenda Elshof...the wonder women of the convention. You both made my time in NC memorable and I was so happy to have had the chance to meet you both. Denise, your introduction of Lois and I at the meeting was so much fun!! I felt very special to be introduced to the crowd!!! Charlene White...darlin' it cost $250 to ship all my goodies home!!! I thought the guy who owned mail Boxes etc. in Cary was going to pass out!! I also had two giant suit cases and a box jammed with stuff checked on to the plane. Lois and I had to buy backpacks on wheels to hand carry our patterns home. Thank goodness we had Monday and a car to get this stuff all together. Thank you to you and Bill for a fun Nantucket class. My friends at home are all impressed! Faye Clause. You are a saint!! And too much fun!! I so enjoyed my rib class. I only hope my light bulb goes on beyond 40 watts. Eileen La Porte. I owe you a debt of gratitude for embarrassing me in front of Pattie Hawkins, Dianne Stanton, and Jackie Abrahms...not to mention Jean Cadmus May!!! It was a fun experience in your class. The pictures are a hoot. My husband said, who are these ladies...my reply...oh my new best friends!!! By the way, I found the jelly belly tin at Target before I left NC!!! Judy Zugish and Betty K... You both are so talented in your fields. I learned so much from you about naturals and twills. I hope to continue with both and get better at it. Thanks for fun classes!!! For all the basketmakers who have never had a chance to attend any convention. Make it a priority. I had no idea what I was missing. So much talent and creativity in one place was overwhelming at times. Save your money and get to a convention at some point in your life. From the moment we checked into the hotel until the time we left. I felt like I was on a roller coaster ride every minute. I was so excited just to register and get to my first class. The vendor room was a basket makers dream. I never saw so much in one room. All the vendors were so helpful and it was an awesome experience to meet the people behind the names. Julie Kleinrath, Miss Jimmie, Kathy Halter, Suzanne Moore, Marilyn Wald, my new friends at Basket Basics, the crazies at HH Perkins, Willowes and so many more. If I left someone out, please forgive me. I am still Jetlagged!! Screaming when I met Billie Dorris... Too much fun!! Flo Hoppe, my idol!! You were so incredibly nice tome. Thank you for that. Martha Wetherbee... You are so awesome... Thanks for taking the time to talk. I know it was crazy busy at teachers marketplace but you were so kind to spend some time with me. Bob Etchason... My very first basket I wove 7 plus years ago was his pattern in Lois Keeners class. It was so neat to have met you. It made my first basket more special. Cass Schorsh... Thanks for finding my bone awl!! I owe you a goody bag next convention!! Miss Ella Mae in my post card pouch class... It was a pleasure to sit beside you in class. Joyce in New York, I hope all your baskets made it home!!! As soon as I wake up I will get your package out to you!!!
