Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2001 22:16:00 -0500 From: "Mary Hooper" To: "David Collins" References: 1 Hi all: Right after I was hurt the end of January, I had a message from someone asking for the shavehorse pattern I have and I promised to send it after I was able to get around. Now I'd like to keep my word, but after an intensive search in every file I can think of as likely repository, I have not turned up the request with the name of the person who sent it. Will the woman who sent e-mail about this please get in touch with me? I apologize for the delay and now the missing note and look forward to hearing from you. I will say that the pattern I have has the same defect someone pointed out in Drew's pattern. The part of the shavehorse where you would put the material to be shaved is too short. I never thought much about it, just kept an extra piece of flat wood around to put under the jaw when necessary, but I see that this is could be remedied and I would not complain. Thanks to the people who sent notes about using horsehair. I'm doing a miniature basket now with white ash stakes and horsehair weavers. Oh, how tiny it is!!! and how large my fingers!!!! For those who sent get well greetings, I appreciate your thoughtfulness. I am walking now on my own two feet but healing is going more slowly than I expected and I still tire easily. I'd love to go to some basket events this year but the medical bills come first. David, thanks for all you do for us. Hi to Norma and I hope spring comes soon to Indianapolis. My first time and I got lucky. My partner, Georgia Kane, was on the spot with a very nicely woven wall basket filled with an awesome dried flower arrangement. Not a petal had suffered in transit. It has been sitting in the most prominent spot in my kitchen since it got here. There were tuck-alongs to boot including a neat ceramic tie-on, a Pat Richter notepad, and a handwritten note for moi. It arrived the weekend before my birthday while I was in the midst of two family health crises and just brightened my day. I almost didn't make the deadline. Now, I not only have a new basket, I also have anew friend. A great big mahalo to Lois and thanks to David and to all of you out there who share your weaving expertise so openly. One can learn a lot by lurking but getting in on the action has proven positively peachy. Thanks to Georgia!!! I don't know what Nate is up to exactly right now, but you may be able to get some of his splint from places like Royalwood http://www.royalwoodltd.com/ Also you might be able to get it from Bob Coker, I know people like JoAnn Kelly Catsos and Joel Davis who make miniatures use his splint. I think his brown ash is available from Gratiot Lake http://www.gratiotlakebasketry.com/ Cindy - about 7 mm half round reed - That is probably about #9 half round. I am not sure where you will be able to locate that, but I use#10 half round for my smaller Nantucket baskets. I believe I have found it at HH Perkins http://www.hhperkins.com/ If you can't find either of these 1/4" half round is going to be very close in size to what you need. Well, we finally had a pretty weekend in St. Louis! I spent all day Saturday running errands and washing the car, but Sunday I was able to get outside and take some basket pictures. I have started "cleaning" up the backgrounds on the digital photos so hopefully I will get them up on my web site soon. Now that I have added a new gallery I need to add some more baskets. Also thanks for all the congrats on the Mardi Gras float. We are having our celebration party this week so I will have to tell everybody that our news of winning has reached the corners of the globe:-)) Take care and happy weaving, Tony Stubblefield St. Louis http://www.JASkets.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Williamsburg baskets Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2001 07:35:18 -0500 From: Ruth Emberg To: "weavers words, David" Good morning, David- David, please add my thank you to the many others that you receive for maintaining this excellent forum for discussion. NCBA not far away...I have cleaned out my work room and am bringing hoops, handles, materials, and I don't know what all which I will have in my room that I am giving away to anyone who wants any of it (just leave some for other takers...) Most of this was "willed" or given to me when a basketmaker was "retiring" and I don't use any of it in the type of basket that I make. There is no sense in allowing it to go to waste and I would rather give it away and allow other basketmakers the enjoyment of using these materials then sell them (doesn't seem quite right to sell it when it was given to me in the first place) so, look me up and hook me up and see what I have. Also, received my darling basket the other day (and sent mine the same day in her box, it was the right size!) from Gloria Logan in Lincoln, IL. She also sent me some chocolate (yummy yummy) and a rose candle from Yankee Candle. It was wonderful! Personal note to her going in mail and Lois if you see this post, I got it and I sent it! Thanks! Whether it is an oil base or not. Especially if it is still wet. THIS IS A NO NO!!!!!!! We would love it if everyone used our product, Weaver's Stain, but not at the expense of someone hurting themselves and/or destroying a basket that you have put time and money into. I know all of you have heard me say this before and I know a few of you do it anyway because you feel you are practicing safety precautions...BUT, please DO NOT torch a wet or dry basket that has been stained with a commercial stain. If you dip your basket in a water based walnut hull mixture, then you are fine. Most store bought stains have some type of oil in them and the latex based stains have soybean oil in them or some flammable agent. The drying agents are very flammable. Drying agents are used in all stains. If you will read the label on these commercial stains, minwax, Sherwin williams, deft, deftoil, all varnishes, watco, Weaver's Stain, etc.... it reads FLAMMABLE. I have been torching baskets for a few years now... I am no pro by any means. Matter of fact, I could use some torching tips myself. I would recommend that you wet your basket or heavily mist it and then torch it. After words you can stain it. When you brush or rub stain on your basket (after it has been torched), it will probably cause some hairs. When you spray stain your basket (after it has been torched), it should not cause hairs. However, the spray staining will enhance the hairs that you may have missed when torching. So it will appear that the spray staining has caused hairs. Like I said before, I am not an expert on torching, BUT I do know a lot about commercial stains, so please take our advise and practice safety first. I don't actually use a torch, I use a disposable long nosed butane grill lighter. They have refillable ones also. Now they have extra long nosed ones that you can use. Your safety is important to us, whether you use our product or someone elses. So PLEASE be very careful. The basket was Laura Lee Zanger's 'Pink Ribbons' breast cancer awareness twill. She graciously gave her permission. I was teaching at a local guild meeting, where I charge a reasonable fee for the kits, but don't really include a teaching fee. The kit price did cover the cost of photocopying the pattern I had printed out. We had a good turnout for the class and I have sold one more kit to someone who had other obligations the day of the class. The guild members loved the idea that it was for breast cancer awareness, and had a lot of fun weaving the basket, even though some of them had never done a charted pattern twill before. Nearly everyone had a recipient in mind for the basket they were weaving. I'm working on one now to give as a memorial to a friend whose mother recently died of breast cancer. I've dyed the background reed for that one black. I'll post a photo when I get it finished. (Am on a temporary weaving hiatus for tendonitis/rotator cuff pain in my shoulder. We also have just returned from a trip to Colorado to attend my younger sister's funeral last Friday. She died suddenly of a massive heart attack. She had always been fit and active, never overweight, rarely ill. The coroner found that all 4 her coronary arteries were 90% blocked. She would have been 46 today - March 12th. Get your yearly physicals folks! What a year this has been!) Julie K. Shanks - The members should decide what the purpose of their guild should be. It can be as simple as a group of friends getting together regularly to weave baskets. Many guilds have members who take turns teaching. Many get teachers from outside the guild to come teach and add variety to the classes. Some pool their resources to buy supplies in bulk at wholesale prices. Some get together to travel to out of town classes or conventions. Some sponsor workshops to which non-members are invited. Mary Hooper - Glad to hear you're healing well and back to basketry. Jayna - It's good to hear from you about how your studio room has worked out. Thanks for the report & the storage tips. I received a response from a fellow WW's with an article that disclaimed the Rochester, New York hospital ever endorsing this treatment. It did state, however, that there are a handful of studies showing that coughing may help victims in controlled medical environments. So, I guess, use your own judgment. Every time I get a minute to tune in I'm still months behind on the weavers words and still spending my sleeping time hours reading all the great notes that you post. We truly have a talented bunch of artists on this site. My heart goes out to the Nantucket weavers here in the states.... Linda Hebert said in a post not to long ago that the price for a Nantucket basket sells for $100.00 and inch...??? Guess those days are over!!. What a difference a few days make, huh? I was surprised to hear that Nate is selling them on LL Bean too. But I've was talking to one of my mould makers and he says that it hasn't hurt his business just yet. He's still getting lots of calls for the Nantucket moulds. But from what I heard Nate is going to import moulds rims, handles etc. besides his line of baskets to sell. I think that another lady was write on when she said, " we as basket makers should stop supporting his business and stop buying the supplies from him.!" I wish Martha could have some weight in all of this to stop what he's doing????? He certainly has hurt us all! Nate is selling the shop and moving to another location but he should just move to China! I enjoyed reading your notes Catherine Smith about the Longaberger Basket company, at least they employ basket makers in the States rather then China!! Oh before I go back to what I was doing...can someone help me find a pattern out there? I saw it in a picture in a bed & breakfast place. - Country Living or such.
