Thank to Kim Mattson for my basket. She made a basket on an oval base with holes for the stakes. There are navy accents and two tie-ons. It's perfect; I love blue and it's a great size with many uses coming to mind -- which to choose, hmmmm??? I really need to get my woodworker husband going with some bases for me. So many ideas, so little time. The dye is two of my favorite colors too. Do you see the blue theme going or what! I have been able to hold off on the candy, but I think it will bite the dust tomorrow. And I always need notepads to keep track of whether I am coming or going.
I'll put a picture of the basket on my photopoint and send one to David for his page also.
Thanks again,

Lois and Joanne - about a Nantucket classes on the mainland - Why don't you both come to St. Louis this June and take the workshop with Martha Wetherbee? You could make both a Nantucket and a Shaker all in the same3 day weekend. I am only 15 minutes from the airport and there are 2hotels less than a mile form my home, I had someone all the way from Idaho last time, you could take the prize for coming the farthest. Martha gave away a bunch of Florida oranges from her own backyard. Let me know if you would like to receive a brochure.
Jane - about black fiber reactive dyes - Procione (sp?) and Cushing both make fiber reactive dyes. I have a black basket I made back about 15years ago and it is still black even after sitting for years near a window. I probably used one of those as that was when I was in college and I used to buy a lot of my stuff from this loom weaving shop that sold only fiber reactives.
Well it must be getting close to Spring as my sweet grass is starting to grow again. I am hoping it quickly spreads out and I can get enough to do a couple of rims this Fall.
Well, back to working on my Martha Wetherbee mailer.
Happy Weaving,
Tony Stubblefield

Sharon Klusman,
I have to disagree with your advice that it is OK to torch a basket that has been oil base stained, even after 24 hours. It is a definite fire hazard. 24 hours after staining there are still many flammable and toxic materials lingering.
The only safe way to torch the basket is before staining. I use water base home made black walnut stain. I stain after torching because the stain will cover any flame marks that occur.
I torch our baskets when they are dry; but I keep the flame moving. It would probably be easier to avoid flame marks if you were to lightly dampen the basket and immediately torch it. The stray hairs will dry fast and burn off.
Again, never torch a basket that has been oil base stained. It is afire hazard and you are exposed to toxic fumes.

Sharon,
On torching, I always torch my basket right after I finish it. It still has enough moisture in it that I don't have to rewet it at all. Just keep moving quickly. At this stage, if there is any scorching, you can use the sandpaper if needed. Then it is ready to stain with Weaver's stain.
It scares me to torch after staining because of the fire hazard. Many of us remember the story on WW a couple years ago when a lady had a terrible fire in her kitchen from this.
Ann thanks for sharing your unusual happening with the swap. That is so neat! It reminds me of the swap that I was in and soon after receiving my basket, I was leaving on vacation for the state my basket came from. I found her address and showed up at her front door to thank her (Denise Pittman in North Carolina). It was so much fun to surprise her and we still keep in touch from time to time.
About printing out free patterns for classes, I do teach classes. I check with the author before figuring my class price. They tell me how much they will sell it to me in quantity, or in some cases have given me permission to copy it just for the class. I once used free patterns from the Internet. In the case where there was no charge to me, I didn't pass the cost along to the students. One advantage of the students getting a free pattern on the Internet is that the printer prints the web site along the top and this exposes the students to a source for ordering their own supplies. Isn't this one of the reasons people put these out there? For us to visit their site and hopefully order supplies? Maybe everyone would win in this situation. I must mention that I haven't been able to read WW for sometime. If I missed something about this, please forgive me. (I just jumped back in reading the most recent one.)

Hi David...I'm a lurker and I enjoy reading your posts. I would like to ask that anyone who gets a virus message check it out before you pass it on. The Virtual Card for You is a HOAX. And by sending it to all the addresses in your mail box, you do nothing more than clutter up the internet. And that's the hoax writers intent. Here's a link to check them out:

Hello Weavers,
Just a note to say that I received a wonderful basket from Doreen Kinkade Of, IOWA. A nicely woven reed basket with seagrass twine at the bottom, and green and white check ribbon bow on the side of the square handle. It looks perfect in my new kitchen. Thank you so much Doreen I love it. My husband loved the snack you sent with it. I only got crumbs and they were tasty.
We also love our new house even though it is the real THE MONEY PIT.

Hello Everyone,
Reading the posts about gourds and weaving. Yes, Helen Thomas (Sandlady in Tangier, In) has LOTS of gourds. I get a lot from her and from Lena Braswell in Georgia..(706) 547-6784, Also West Mountain Gourd Farm in Texas but they like you to pick them instead of sending them. Hopefully, this growing season I will have LOTS to sell. I sold some HUGH ones (weighed..not dry..98 lbs) they were a basket type...54" around. I am planting a lot of those this year and will keep you all posted when they are ready.
Also, I'm teaching a class on Basket making with gourds on the 17th of March here in College Station, TX. I am applying for next year in Branson to teach at the Silver Dollar City. I also teach jewelry making with weaving on gourd pieces. That is fun!! I had such a good turnout at my last class in Austin that I thought I would try it here at home. We will see how that goes.
Also, I would like to participate in the next basket swap....
Thanks and Everyone have a Wonderful weekend!! I will be GOURDING....

Hi, my partner was Kathy Labbez and she is a first time swapper. She sent me a Williamsburg basket. The handle is laced with denim blue reed peeking out of stained wrapped reed. 2 denim blue hearts dangle on a side. Kathy filled the basket with a spring theme including garden gloves, tulips to plant, hibiscus to plant, a basket notepad and pen and 2 clay bird garden markers. After the garden work, she included Lemon Zinger herbal tea for me to enjoy. She outdid herself and all the while, life was trying to get in the way and she was determined to meet the swap deadline, which she did. I hope she will continue with the swaps and whoever receives a basket from her will have a joy.
I also want to thank our Hawaiian friend who coordinated the swap and kept us all together.
I don't want to forget David who is a blessing to us all and may we never forget it. Without him, we wouldn't have weaver's words, then where would we be? Certainly not here, enjoying ourselves.
A basket lurker, cause I love it, but most are so much more intelligent than I in the craft, so I am happy to read and learn.

Hi Everyone. Guess I'm guilty as many who read but don't post much lately. I was very happy to see the robins have arrived here in Maine, so Spring can't be far off... I am SO ready to be out in the barn studio again & out of the house.
I've been having fun taking a chair caning class this Winter, something I've talked about doing for 3 years but never got around to. The big news is that I received a call last week & was offered free booth space in an otherwise very pricey trade show of New England products. Have you ever tried to pull a show together in a matter of days?! Believe me, you don't want to do this if you can help it. Thank God it is a wholesale show & I only have to bring a handful of samples, not a vanload of stock! Nevertheless, pulling together a massive amount of business cards, brochures, pricelists, handouts & display pieces at a moments notice is quite a challege as everything requires more time than I've had. I wound up printing my own double-sided 3-fold brochures on our new color printer. They came out beautiful, but took about 2 minutes per to print (1000 brochures....you mathematicians figure it out!). The show has 4000 registered buyers. As a one woman studio, I figure my biggest challenge will be learning to handle requests for orders intended for a factory environment. Artist or factory. Factory NOT!
Lois, John McGuire teaches classes in his upstate New York studio. He generally has the years schedule available to send upon inquiry. You can reach him via johnmcguire.com. He's great fun to work with.

Hello everyone!
I just had to share with everyone the wonder swap basket that I received from Eve Sumsky. It is a wonder Christmas Sled basket with a red and green border. It has curls just up from the base. And the base has been so wonderfully sanded and stained.
This is my second swap and I have to say they are wonderful.
Thanks David for this wonder site where we can discuss, vent and share. Thank you for all your hard work.

Hello fellow weavers - Wanted you to know that I received my swap basket last Saturday and it is absolutely beautiful! It was woven by talented Dolores Gatz and she calls it a spirit keeper. The shape is freeform and the materials she used were strips of elm bark and fuchsia colored waxed linen. It is definitely unique and a basket that I will cherish. I have it on display for all of our visitors to see. I would like to say a special thanks to Lois Keener for coordinating this latest swap. She undoubtedly devoted many hours to make endeavor successful.

IT'S HERE! IT'S HERE! Wow whoever taught Lois to pack a box!?!? I don't think that you could have fit one more thing in there! My hubby has already laid claim to the cookies. Those are his favorite type, even though he has never had any from Hawaii. I've already smelled each and every soap-do you make those too? My kids have ask me how to make soap and mom could we sometime? We made candles once or twice and they love to get the ones they've made when a storm comes, so we can use them if needed. We've only needed them once, thank heavens. She tucked in a beautiful shell necklace, I have a couple of shell necklaces and I love them. This one will get much wear as well. The candies well, what can one say about candies-they are already open, especially the caramel ones (she sent 3 boxes of Hawaiian candy!!!). Coffee, how did you know! you gotta have coffee with chocolate too. I'm such a coffee hound! I can't wait to try it. It was neat that you enclosed so much from Hawaii. I didn't even think of putting in Indiana or WV stuff (I lived there until 10 months ago. Now for the 'La Piece de resistance' The basket is perfect in color and I already know just where it will go, well, actually I have 3 different places in mind, hum where to put it. It is the perfect color too. I have a 'lodge room' It has a cathedral bear beam ceilings. It has wood walls and beige carpet with a fireplace. I keep all my plants-or most of them-in there. It will go great in that room. That is our favorite room in the house. It is so beautifully made. I just LOVE it. Thanks soooo much Lois! Hopefully we'll be swap partners again soon. Boy with a great swap partner like Lois, Everyone is going to want her next time.
When Lois gives me the all clear, well get started on the next swap. If anyone out there is going to the NC convention and wants to participate in the next swap, we can wait until y'all get back to start. Just let me know ahead of time if that is the case.

Aloha from very breezy Honolulu,
There are still 3 weavers who haven*t sent their baskets (at least they haven*t notified me). I will email the three of them one more time (have emailed them once and received no reply) and after that, they will go on the "no-no" list meaning they will not be considered for another swap.
If you have not received your basket by 15 March, email me.
Two other weavers have let me know their baskets will be late (one suffered an injury preventing her from weaving and one had a death in the family).
So I stress this again--when Lynda begins the next swap, don*t sign up unless you fully intend to participate.
And if you didn*t receive a basket in the last swap (the one that fell apart at the end and Katie, the organizer, has disappeared off the face of the earth), please email me and I*ll add those names to the list.
I did get to swap as I left someone off the list by mistake...and my basket should be here today and I can*t wait.
Counting the days until convention.

About black dyes that stay black. I have not done this but remember Judith Onley saying that to get the intense black she will dye the reed a couple of times or so. She let it dry completely in-between dyeing.
Hope that helps.

The wild women and the boys...
Something curious happens when you take ladies of the Lower-48; give them a taste of the Iditarod, the opportunity to run a dog team, a tour of Mt. McKinley , and top it off with days of basket weaving with a view. Pretty soon there is a swagger to their step and their conversing in terms of gee, haw, 24 hr layovers and calling themselves the "Wild Alaska Bush Basketry Women and the boys". Even odder is that the men of the group didn't mind....
The Alaska Bush Basketry Retreat was a success beyond even my expectations. The stories of what these ten individuals did to make it to Alaska was incredible. Tons of overtime, working three jobs, those with serious illness to overcome and those brave enough to make it on legs that weren't as solid as they had been in the past and all of them kept going without complaint. Many of them had their own personal "Iditarods" to overcome before they got to the start of the one in downtown Anchorage.
If enthusiasm is contagious then they were infectious with it. Every evening we "wowed" them with another facet of life in the last frontier from the cosmopolitan city of Anchorage to the "real" Alaska in Talkeetna. They were entertained by mushers, professional photographers, local storytellers, and expanded their artistic reach with a workshop in "gut" led by artist Fran Reed. Top that off with cuisine ala Talkeetna about town and we had one satisfied group at days end.
It was a grand opportunity to show this group of women the paradise in my back yard and have them walk away from the experience a bit different from when they arrived.
It's your turn! That is if this years group will make room for you. The "Wild Alaska Bush Women" instructed me not to advertise so that they can all return again next year. The Alaska Bush Basketry Retreat goes one better in year 2002 to include a "Fish On!" retreat in August as well as the dog days of "Iditarod" in March. We are in the process of getting our pamphlet together but if you are interested in attending I encourage you to reserve your space early.
Until we meet in Alaska!!
