DAVIS" To: "David Collins" Hello All, I just finished making a very nice step basket at the request of a shop owner with whom I hope to establish a good business relationship. Although I have been weaving and selling baskets for over a dozen years, I have previously made only 2 or 3 step baskets. I have observed that they are good sellers and that they can command a good price. However, every time I make one I get worried. Do step baskets pose a problem in creating home accidents? Are they a danger for falls down staircases that could result in bad injuries? My husband who once worked with housing codes enforcement says that he cringes every time he sees a step basket. I certainly would not want to create an item that led to someone's injury and there is also the liability aspect. One could hardly claim that the basket was being misused when it is specifically designed to set on a staircase. I haven't taken the basket in to the shop yet; I may never take it in or make another one. Any thoughts out there? Thanks, Judy in 65 degree and sunny Knoxville. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket quotes Date: Thu, 08 Feb 2001 09:32:00 -0600 From: "Paula Gulley" To: davidc@iei.net Hi David, thank you for all the work you do. Our school is doing a mosaic and each staff member has been asked to create a clay piece that represents something that is very important to them. That part wasn't hard, but she also wants us to put a quote on the piece that has something to do with peace. AND, it has to be short enough to fit! Help! I have been a "lurker" for about two years now and I really appreciate having access to such an informative site. To the person looking for milk paint - Try the paint section at Joann Fabrics (don't know if they have stores in your area). I saw small cans there in several colors. I am also thinking of trying that look, but don't get out of my small town in Vermont that often to get supplies. Joann's does also have a website - www.joann.com. Good luck! Suzanne in VT- I don't know about guilds in other places, but we do have one here in VT! We are the Green Mountain Basket Guild and would love to welcome new members if you or any other readers are interested. Just e-mail me at tsdomas@together.net to let me know of your interest and I will send you our latest info. and meeting schedule. Request for help - I have been a weaver for seven years now and have offered classes to various age groups at our local school for little to no charge except materials. I am trying to put together a slate of classes to offer locally due to a growing number of requests. My questions are these - Aside from materials, what do you teachers base your class price on? Also how do you determine the class size limit? I feel very strongly that in addition to helping students create a basket they can be proud of it is also my goal to impart to them in a professional manner an appreciation for the art of basketry. I recognize that not every student will "fall in love" with the art, but I do want to be sure they are satisfied with the class (more for the promotion of the art than the possibility that they may want to take another class from me). I know this was recently a WW topic, but would appreciate any replies. I realize sometimes replies are given privately and would be glad to hear from any other teachers! Happy weaving from cloudy central Vermont where they say we'll get freezing rain overnight! Sue %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: We were Out of Order! Most of my information about what exhibits are being offered across the country, comes from The Crafts Report and other crafts magazines. "Calls for Entries" are usually located in the back of the publications. Usually an entry fee is involved, anywhere from $15-35, and it's usually for two or three slides per entry. Sometimes the jury requests a detail and a full-view slide, so when you are making your slides, don't forget the detail slide. Here's the information about my most recent entries in two exhibitions: My deer antler wall hanging sculpture "Enwined II", was selected to appear in the 57th annual juried art exhibition at the Sioux City Art Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Exhibition dates are February 10-March 25, 2001, with Henry Adams, Curator of American Painting at the Cleveland Museum of Art, serving as juror. He selected 140 pieces to be in the exhibition from 118 artists, with a total of 866 works submitted. Another deer antler basket tabletop version this time, "Basically Brown," was selected for the Southeastern Minnesota Juried Art Exhibition at the Rochester Art Center in Rochester, Minnesota. This exhibit is biannual, this is the 6th showing. Exhibit dates are February 10 - April 1, 2001, with opening reception February 10. Juror was Lin Nelson-Mayson, Curator at the Minnesota Museum of American Art in St. Paul, Minnesota. 177 artists submitted 308 pieces of art to the jury and selected from that number, were 97 artists exhibiting 119 pieces. Once again, I "underplanned"--didn*t think it would take 5 hours to email everyone with their swap partner*s name--and now I*m bleary-eyed and hoping I didn*t give a wrong zip code here or there. I sent email addresses with the note, so if you would like to get in touch with your buddy before you send the basket that might be a good idea. I didn*t get to participate in this swap as we had an odd number, but I*ll get into the next one. Remember to send your basket by 2/28.... email me when you do and email me when you receive your treasure. If you haven*t received the name of your partner by now, email me ASAP. Asking an opinion--not swap related. I taught a class Saturday using a wood base that is a most original base. I ordered them from my supplier (what would I do with her??) who is not the manufacturer (?) and when passing them out at class, I noticed the manufacturer (and designer of the pattern) had wood burned the company name/website on the bottom of the base. Those in the class weren*t too pleased with that one, who was weaving for the first time, said, "it makes the whole basket look manufactured! No one will believe I made it" and the rest agreed with her. While I can understand the reason behind it (this base is unique and I*ve seen it duplicated and renamed by others on line) I don*t support it and suggested they sand it off when they got home. Am I off base with this? I*m teaching this class again in April and will probably sand it off before class...any opinions?
