I am an avid reader of Weavers Words and a weaver myself. Although I do read you newsletter all the time I just have not taken the time to participate in it. It did rather infuriate me that some one did accuse you of INTENTIONAlY not publishing their letter. Computers are not perfect and only as good as the persons inputting the information, it is however amazing that all of the note and letters sent e-mail do actually get to the people they are going to. Mistakes and errors do occur on both ends. I feel that if the person or persons who said this would just walk 1 mile in your shoes that they themselves 1) would not want the job you do. 2) Would not even want to do it for free like you do. What was said was so inconsiderate, to say to a person that provides such a service free of charge like you do, I think that person aught to stop and reconsider and apologize. It was entirely uncalled for and should never happen again. I would like to extend to that person an open invitation to open their own site, read all the mail, process all the entries, keep everything updated and do it all right 100% of the time and do it all for FREE!!! O yes and of course handle the same that they dished out to you and see how they feel. I am sorry that there are people that only consider themselves and not the feeling of others on this nice site. Keep up the Excellent Work David. God Bless You. I am not afraid to give my name either. Second--I am running the next swap. I know I was on a "list" to do the next one, but the last coordinator hasn*t been in touch, so I will just pick up the ball and proceed. I was hoping to hear if the last swap concluded (meaning everyone got a basket) but haven*t heard anything on that point, either. So, with all that said, it is time to start the next swap. So, from 29 January until 9 February, email me at keenerfam@worldnet.att.net if you wish to participate. I need your mailing address. On the 12th, I will begin emailing those who have signed up and let them know the name and address of their swap partner. Then the ball is in your court. Make a simple (or elaborate) basket and send it to your swap partner.. E-mail me when you send it. When you receive your basket, e-mail me to let me know you received it and e-mail your swap partner to let her/him know you received it. All baskets should be in the mail by 28 Feb. I would like to get everything squared away by the time I leave for the convention in late March. Am I leaving anything out? I would like to have as few "rules" as possible. And yes, we have a volunteer to run the next one... And the convention--help. I have a million questions. Joanne and I will arrive in Raleigh on Tuesday. What is close to the Sheraton--meaning a mall, food places--are we so far out that we will need to rent a car for Tuesday?? Will I hear from my instructors? I mean, what sort of tools will I need? I*m taking a Nantucket class--my first--and would like to be prepared. I have a full day of no classes (so does Joanne, but we have different days)--are there usually spots available in classes? Does the Sheraton have a gym/indoor pool? I really want to be prepared for this... I am so excited about attending this and seeing Billie D. and my friend Caroline Prevost--and meeting other WW weavers.. aloha nui loa, Lois %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 4 I. 75 Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2001 21:37:54 -0600 From: kderrick@swbell.net To: David Collins References: 1 David, I usually lurk but read every Weavers Words avidly. For starters, I would check around and see what the going rates seem to be. How much do you pay for a class you take? Are you writing your own patterns or teaching from patterns written by other authors? Be sure to figure in the pattern cost when you prepare your kits. Also be sure to make up a sample of each basket you want to teach so that the shop owner or prospective students can select the one they want to make. It's also a good reference for students to see what their goal is while they are weaving. It's very difficult to come up with a class cost out of the blue. Compare the types of baskets others are teaching and what they charge. Try to come up with some baskets that are distinctly different on some way. Consider the difficulty level of each and how much individual attention the students may need. Can you talk to Lois and other teachers in your area about how they got started and how they calculate their fees? Good luck! Nancy - You might be able to salvage the ash strips by gluing are enforcing patch of fabric on the back side of each split place. An iron-on interfacing might work. The split may still be visible, but would not gape or curl and would not split any further. Dianne Walbeck - if your computer has a graphic program you maybe able to select an oval of whatever size you need and print it out. Otherwise, could you trace the base shape from one of the baskets that came with the stand? Good luck with this project! Please post pictures of the finished baskets or write up a pattern for them. Pam Feix - Hope the new year treats you better than the old one did. Hang in there & keep weaving! I'll be out of town most of the coming week, though, so please keep the sign up time open until at least the 20th of January. You could run sign-up thru the remainder of January and require baskets to be sent out before the end of February. Lynda Crowe - Lois Keener is about to start the next swap. I'm sure she'd be glad to add your name to the list of willing future coordinators. I'm not sure how many names are on the list now. Tony - Your advice about teaching is excellent. Thanks for sharing it with us. Melissa Kile - To use a Lash Saver or other lashing guide tool, insert it into the basket where you want the lasher to go and then, with the tool in place, slide the lasher through the opened groove. It makes lashing much easier and reduces the friction on your lashers. Beth Bechtel - I don't know specifically of a loom weaver's list, but I think there is at least one at www.egroups.com. I subscribe to nine different lists there, including one called Natural Dyes and several basketry ones. Another place to search would be www.about.com. Anne Jackson - I thing you are more likely to find milk paint in a craft store than a paint store. Judy in Knoxville - If you have your list of interesting things in WW and what volume to look at, you can always find the back issues on the WW web site that Davis lists at the beginning of each issue. I am getting ready to have a local gourd weaving class, before the growing season as I would like to give each one of them seeds for growing their own gourds. To everyone else: I have been on this list for almost 4 years (yikes! time is passing!) It was back when there were less than 200 people involved. As I understand it, David took over the mechanics of the mailing list when someone who had started it could no longer keep up with it. So, David volunteered to help out as a favor to his mom, Norma, and her weaving buddies. David sure has gone beyond the call of duty, setting up a website, compiling the traveling companion, scanning in pictures of members baskets etc, etc. I cannot believe that someone would write to David and give him grief or accuse him of editing or censoring anything......Geeze, folks lighten up. Sometimes email just disappears, I have my webtv hooked up in the living room and the computer hooked up 6 feet away in another room and when the moon is in the right phase and the computer/ISP or electricity gods are not happy I lose email that I sent from one room to the next. Just because computers and email work MOST of the time, and work quickly MOST of the time doesn't mean they always work. Before typing out that irate email and hitting the send key, take a little time to think first. I find the following line appropriate, "Computers let you make MORE mistakes faster than any other invention in human history, with the possible exception of handguns and tequila." I think we should have a couple of rules for this group. Rule 1: Be Nice. Rule 2: Be Really NICE to the guy doing all the work. Rule 3: See rule 1 and 2. Welcome to "Weavers Words." As you have probably already discovered, David Collins is not the basket guru, he is our beloved computer guru who maintains and distributes the wonderful "Weavers Words" email list. He has also set up an excellent web site for us where you can go to read back issues, look at pictures of baskets by various readers, shop, find other basketry websites, and become inspired to keep weaving. If you have specific questions, just toss them out - you may get several different helpful answers. Denise - Considering the short amount of time you have for basket classes, you might consider teaching the younger students a small basket woven of construction paper strips (or wallpaper or gift wrap folded double) about 5 by 5 strips square. They can learn the basics of simple weaving and turning up the sides. The rim can be stapled in place. Or you could use the same strips for spokes of a round basket and weave or twine the base with rug yarn. Once the sides are turned up, weaving can continue with more paper strips. I have also seem children's baskets woven on pop bottles that have the tops cut off and the sides cut to form ribs. You can weave these with almost anything. MARY A. - Several of the basketry supply companies carry shaker tape, which would be good for weaving seats. Go to the WW website and browse among the dealers who have websites listed there. Joan in slushy NW Ohio - I took a hamper class last weekend from Terrie Fry in Joplin, MO. Terry used copper tacks in 1/2 and 3/4 inch lengths to attach her rims and the inset handles that her husband, Jim, has designed. She buy them (the tacks) at large home improvement stores. The copper tacks don't rust, look nice, and are Much faster than lashing a rim. A fun change. I suspect they are considerably less expensive than brass as well. Jill C. - I think the belly sling you seek may be found under a "Girdles" listing. Or you could get an elastic back brace and turn it around. I think they use giant 'Ace' wraps for broken ribs. Don't laugh too hard! Hope your aches and pains go away before Iditarod time! It is hard to believe I have been retired for an entire year now... where did the time go? For the past year, I have been busy experimenting with natural materials, learning new weaving techniques and all those things I longed to do, but never seemed to have time or energy after working 8 hours a day. I am presently learning more about weaving twills, which have always been difficult for me. Peggy Brennan has had the patience to help me and teach me some of the SE Cherokee twill patterns.... bless her patience...and I now have better understanding of twills and I find that I enjoy weaving them. Cross-stitch was my love before weaving, and I find a similarity between weaving twill patterns and cross-stitch. Peggy is considering offering an online class for weavers who would like to learn the SE Cherokee twill patterns and would love to receive any comments regarding this venture. Doesn't seem like it would be too hard, but I would rather work from a pattern. Does anyone know of a pattern available? Also, thank you to all who wrote letters or emails to L.L. Bean regarding the Nathan Taylor designed imported baskets in their catalog. If nothing else, we voiced our opinion and it sure feels good to me! Thanks, Margie in Montana %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% If for any reason you would ever like to cancel your subscription, simply send me a message with "unsubscribe" as your subject.
