LINK POPULARITY http://www.linkpopularity.com As the number of Web sites expands geometrically, it's difficult for any single site to rise above the aggregate Web noise. One way to stand out is to have your page linked to other pages. The question is how many other pages are you linked to? Link Popularity is a search engine designed to answer that question. Simply enter a URL, and the site gives you a list of major search engines and how many sites they show linking to your site. Click the number, and it will take you to the search engine giving you access to those sites. Not only can you find out who's linking to you, but also who's stealing your ideas, and whether their links have been updated. I started out teaching nonweavers the market basket, then melon, then small bean pot (5-6" wire handle). I tried to pick baskets that could be done in about 4 hours or less. I have so many returnees that now the classes are a hodgepodge of whatever the student wants to weave - some classes there are 6 or so different baskets being woven! As for the teaching fee, I'll be interested in what others say - I know I am not charging enough but had no idea what to charge. I*m ready for some sweater weather and snow--and a long "sit" by the fireplace--so if you are ready, let*s swap. You can weave on the beach...bring your sunscreen! For whitewashing, you can dilute white acrylic paint and brush it on your basket or you can buy a commercial spray from a craft shop--can*t find mine or I*d tell you the supplier--and Americana paints (acrylic) has a bottled whitewash (but I haven*t used it) I wove today for the first time in a month and my shoulder and neck haven*t felt this good in a long time--though tomorrow might tell a different tale. BenGay has become my dearest friend. (No offense, Joanne). We are sooo excited about the NC convention and are anxiously awaiting our class assignments. My first convention and I can*t wait! What is the status on the current swap? I*m scheduled to organize the next one and I*m wondering if we should wait until February to begin. Joanne, if you will email me I can send you some prices and ideas for teaching. Students around here pay $50 to $60 dollars for 6 weeks of classes that last 2 hours. I receive from half the tuition to a percentage of the total enrollment amount. I set a maximum of 8 but some places insist on 12. You have a right to set a minimum of enrollees. Materials are about $25. I spend at least 3 times that much time in preparation of the class. I make my own pattern for the class and advertise to beginners and experienced. Otherwise, it is hard to fill a class in the Oklahoma City area. I promise all participants that they will complete their basket if they do the "homework", attend all classes, and are willing to come a little early or stay a little late. I am usually there anyway setting up the class or cleaning up afterwards. Beginners need to finish their baskets in class; otherwise, I find they usually never finish what they start. I think some of this is going to depend on the number of classes you teach and your pool of students. I only teach a few classes a year (6 to 8 maybe) so I don't have to pick a large number of different baskets. I am also of the philosophy of teaching basic skills and techniques and not a specific "pattern". What I mean is, when I teach a Nantucket basket we happen to make a 5" round, but the techniques I explain are applicable to any size round Nantucket. The same goes for the ribbed baskets I teach. Pretty much all my classes I would consider to be suitable for a beginner or an advanced weaver if they haven't made that particular style before. I don't really make up kits as everybody is using weaving materials from the same bundles of reed/cane. I do occasionally make up extra kits for the Nantucket baskets with all the supplies, but for other reed baskets I may only offer the handles for sale (most people already have the reed they would need). All my classes are one day, usually 9-10 am to 5 pm and I expect everyone to complete their basket in that time frame. I only let people go home with an unfinished basket if they insist on leaving early. I figure a class takes about twice as long to teach as it does for me to weave that same basket. If I can't make the basket in about 3 hours it will take too long in class. My classes range in price from about $40 to $75 depending on the expense of the supplies and how much time I have to spend preparing any materials. Therefore a Nantucket basket is much more expensive as the supplies cost more I do a lot more prep work. I figure I need to make at least $100 for a class to be worth my Saturday or Sunday. So for a reed basket that cost $12-$15 in supplies I need to add $25 and have a minimum of 4 students. At the places I teach they usually take about $5 of the class fee per student to cover their costs for advertising and such. I think that is more than fair. Also since I teach basic techniques and not specific patterns I don't give out written instructions. I do hand out diagrams for certain complicated steps, but I don't give row-by-row instructions. I want my students to be able to take the skills and apply them to other baskets not just the one they made in class. I hope this helps a little and if you have any other specific questions feel free to ask. I never received my IBA 2001 convention book. I guess maybe my membership ran out. Does anyone know if they send out renewal notices or is it up to the members to send in their dues on their own. I am used to MO who always sends out at least one notice with their newsletter. Anyway with the convention falling on Mother's Day weekend this year I am not going to be able to even shop on visitors day :-(( Pam Feix - so good to hear from you again on WW. I visited your site the other day to make sure you were still around. Sorry to hear you are having problems with your Internet service. I am just now switching to Southwestern Bell DSL so I can't give you any advise on their service. Good luck. Well, I just want to wish everyone a very happy new year. I hope 2001 will be less crazy than last year, but things never seem to slow down. I think I am going to start a craft night once a month, with some of my friends, so maybe I won't be so last minute when next Christmas rolls around. I can try at least. Lash Buddies, made by a local metal smith, are solid brass and coated with a tarnish resistant seal. They have a red string with 2 wooden beads at the ends to help you locate them among your other tools. The Lash Buddie is 2 inches long with a 1/2-inch long "handle". The part of the Lash Buddie inserted under the rim runs from 1/4" to 3/8" wide. There is a groove for the lasher to sit down into. The price is $6.50 a piece or $65.00 a dozen (there are additional discounts for larger quantities). They are pictured in our secure on-line catalog at http://www.countryseat.com/shophome.htm. You can get them at Baskets of Joy - www.basketsofjoy.com or In a hand basket. They both have the kind you want. I use mine all the time. I have one from each place. Joanne, being a special ed. teacher during the day and a basket teacher at night, I can tell you that teaching a class with everyone doing the same basket is much easier than having everyone doing something different. I teach a beginner class and an advanced class but not at the same time. The beginner class includes a market basket, a round basket and a muffin basket with a you make your own handle. This teaches the basics of weaving. I do 4 nights of 3 hours each. Some people finish the basket, others don't. That's why I have the last night - to finish up or experiment. I usually write my own pattern and don't really use one for the first night since they are not able to read it and understand. The lab fee is $25. I get paid by the number of people who sign up since I teach through the local adult ed. program. If you want more info, please email me. I was expecting more of a "shoehorn" type tool, but this one has a 1/4" metal tube, cut at a sharp angle. The handle is attached to the un-angled side. Stupid question--but how do you use it, other than wiggling out a hole for your lasher? Which is what I do with an awl or screwdriver anyway. Any info would be most appreciated. Can you imagine - too busy to ask an important question like that for her mother!!! Just see how long before she gets one. Just kidding. My plan is always to be able to "go back and find that interesting stuff". In the meantime, have had this long list of Weaver's Words every time I open my mailbox. Finally, I have done this. I bought a notebook that I keep by my computer. As I read thru each edition, I write down any reference that is of interest to me also noting the volume: edition and date. Now I can delete them. I have worked my way thru to August 2000 and hope to soon be up to date. There may be a way to store these notations on my computer, but I am not yet that computer literate. This works for me.
