Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2000 23:49:47 -0800 (PST) From: Joanne Howard To: David Collins Aloha, Teachers I need your help. I have been asked to consider teaching at a little shop I consign at in January. I am still trying to decide whether or not I should dive in. One thing holding me back. I don't know whereto start. I am begging for all of your opinions!!! Is it best to teach beginner only (never have woven) class? Then hold other classes for other levels? Or invite all that wish to weave, experience or not to any class? I know Lois does that, but she is such an experienced teacher. She can handle anything that comes her way. I am not sure I can, without much teaching experience under my belt. Do you expect students to finish their basket in the time allotted, or let them know up front, they might not finish? How much time do you allow for a class? What kinds of patterns do you begin with? Basic techniques on market baskets etc. or pick a pattern and go? The shop also wants to know my instructor fee and supply fee? I think I can calculate a kit fee but how do you decide what an instructor fee is reasonable for what type of basket? I don't feel very organized in this dept. and hesitate to jump in. Maybe if I got more info on how to start this adventure I might feel more confident!! I would appreciate any e-mail on this subject as it is very interesting to read about all ways of teaching. Everyone has their own way of doing things and I know I could learn from all of you. Sorry for all the questions, and I do have a million. It is what is floating around in my head on this subject!!!!! I hope you will all take pity on me and reply!! LOL... Thanks in advance for your kokua (help). Happy New Year...Joanne %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 4 I. 71 Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 00:30:57 -0800 From: "Lisha Kimball" To: "David Collins" My it's hard keeping up with all you girls I've been trying to read your notes posted for the YEAR before my poor machine shuts down or I poops out from overload! I've had such a busy year with the shop, shows and this remodeling project. We just finished taking the roof off of the shop and completed our new home above the shop, just in time for hibernating before we get snowed in this weekend. I feel like I'm living in cyberspace as I only go up the stairs &down the stairs to begin & end the day. It really feels weird especially after living in the old house for 30 years. Finally we're all nested in and I can get to all the other important stuff like taxes! Yes! Tony: I heard mention of a double handles rib basket? I've made a few and they are really adorable. I had to make my own pattern up for it using a 6x12 hoop and gluing 2-button swing handle on the hoop. Make 4 gods eyes then just weave. Kim: About your problem with the rose basket... I have that pattern too. The roses aren't that hard but it's funny how with each person they come out looking totally different. When you go to make the petals for the roses, just kind of flip the reed back to make a curl then go on to another flip as you go around the center part of the rose. I can send you my own drawing of how to do it if you need it... I hope that's legal??? This Nate thing is SAD! I interviewed him last new years day for a piece on the weavent. com site, but haven't had any time to put it up yet. To be honest I was afraid to do it anyway. He told me and showed me the imported Nantucket baskets and I must admit they were incredible!! Some how I couldn't believe it, but when I was up in VT doing a show, Frank Wilson of the Basketville shop told me that they were his best customers. I was in a breathless shock. Nate says he wants to reach the other 90% of customers that can't afford their baskets. But I still think it's sad.... But what really has ruffled my feathers is when I go to shows and see other vendors buying an import basket and imported shade and copying my lamp basket ideas...Wow no work needed there!! How can these promoters let this happen? Talk about easy money! And these are the shows that cost me $400.00 to get into and they are juried!! I'm afraid that in a few more years the craft shows are going to either change hugely or just become a trade show when other crafters are forced to change their ways too.??? I think with this net comes a lot of copying when we advertise so much on the computers (all of our patterns and picture and ideas.) Well, aloh...woops wrong state! See I am a basket case, I've totally lost it.! I worked on the Penobscot's "Indian Island", which is the primary place of residence for many members of the tribe. Their official name is Penobscot Indian Nation and they are a federally recognized tribe with sovereign rights. That is how they refer to themselves, & they are proud of their Indian heritage. But, you are correct in that there are differences across the country as to how Native peoples want to be addressed. I was once, in fact, chastised by reviewers of a professional journal I was submitting to because this fact was not understood. The preferences vary: Indian, Native American, Aboriginal People, Native American, Alaska Native etc. I'm sure there are some Native people on this list who might enlighten us further. In my experience in multi-cultural counseling, it is important to recognize that Native Americans are NOT a homogeneous group; they vary widely in language, custom, dress, traditions, and obviously geographic location. Are there no weavers in Arizona?!? These ladies are not looking for a pro, they just want to learn the basics. I met her at a class that I taught, and believe me, I am not a professional teacher! I just teach people who want to learn for fun. Last year someone taught them a small pine needle basket which they really enjoyed, but a few of the ladies were scared off by the more complicated (they felt) style and want to learn the basic reed basket style. I saw a post of someone who was wintering in Az, and surely there must be others! This lady has already left for AZ. but I could contact her through her daughters who are in my area. It would help basketmakers with their pricing problems, although this book is not devoted strictly to basketmakers, it's for all types of arts and crafts disciplines. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 11, 2000 Contact: Cathryn Peters 531 Main Street/PO Box 61 Zumbro Falls, MN 55991 Phone: 507-753-2006 Email: Wickrwoman@aol.com Sylvia Landman, 1090 Cambridge Street Novato, CA 94947 Phone: 415-883-6206 Email: Create@Sylvias-studio.com New Book from Publisher, iUniverse.com Wicker Woman Featured in National Arts & Crafts Pricing Book Cathryn Peters, owner of The Wicker Woman business in Zumbro Falls, is featured in a new comprehensive pricing book written by Sylvia Landman. Pricing Guidelines for Arts & Crafts is the definitive book to help artist's answer one of the most perplexing problems they encounter-pricing their products to realize profits. Over 95 successful, professional crafters in all disciplines contributed their pricing strategies for inclusion in Sylvia's book. Each author listed how they determine their price schedule based on overhead, material cost, labor, and profit. Various crafts determine pricing in different ways; some pricing is determined by project, per materials, per hour or by the inch or foot, and all variations are discussed in this book. Several contributors gave hints about approaching galleries to carry your work, selling at retail verses wholesale markets, what to expect from sales representatives, and how to market your items optimally. There are also chapters about selling from websites, pricing for pattern designers and setting prices for teaching your art or craft. Landman devoted four pages to Peters and featured her pricing schedules on wicker repair and basketry in Chapter 14, Basketry, Florals & Miscellaneous Crafts. Cathryn is one of three basketmakers in the chapter, but is the only wicker restoration and chair caning specialist in the book. Cathryn Peters is a 25-year veteran Master chair seat weaver, wicker restoration specialist, and basketmaker. Just recently she completed 80 hours of classroom instruction serving as master to a seat weaving apprentice, acquiring a Minnesota Folk Art Grant for $3, 839.00. Peters' work has appeared in a variety of magazines and books, TV programs, art galleries, and art shows. She is a workshop leader, pattern author, and has also established an "information only" website on wicker restoration, chair seat weaving and basketry at < www.wickerwoman.com >. Sylvia Landman is one of America's most prolific business craft authors, and has owned and operated her crafting business since 1962. She is also a freelance writer, college instructor, speaker, and small business consultant. She contributes articles for both business and craft magazines and writes several monthly columns on crafts with a focus on fibers. Pricing Guidelines for Arts & Crafts by Sylvia Landman, was just released in December and is available through the publisher, author, or bookstores. The 352 page, soft-cover book sells for a retail price of $24.95. It is a large 3-foot, three tier stand made of iron and painted green. The baskets are all made with a round material and not very sturdy. She would like to have a wood bottom, she saw the waste paper basket I wove (Kathy's Garden), and really liked that idea. I am working on the dimensions to make the bases on paper but I am stuck on how far apart to space my spokes. The holes will be drilled and I would like to have them drilled in pairs to avoid inserting spokes later. I am thinking the holes will be approximately 1/2" to 5/8"apart but then again how many do I need. I get really frustrated when some one asks to make a basket like one they have seen but completely different. Has anyone every made baskets to fit on one of these types of stands? Did you use wood bases or did you stay with round reed and make an oval base? I would love to do the latter but she is very insistent on the wood bases. She has been one of my more difficult students but has brought a lot of business my way. I know I could weave the baskets but I just need a kick in the but to get started. Basically what I need is good directions on how to draw a good oval base. I think I can get the rest from that point on. I really don't know how these will turn out but after weave them up I will like the idea better. I have to see to enjoy. Warm hot chocolate wishes to all of you enjoying crisp winter weather. First of all, I hope that you all had a very nice Holiday Season and wish you the best of new years. The year 2000 was not a good one for my family and although things are getting along better, there are many things that are still going on in our lives. We have had so many difficulties with our web site that we are currently looking for a new server that we can count on. I don't know why we have had the problems that we have encountered over this past year, but I am sure that it isn't only frustrating to us, but to you, as well. We want to thank all of our customers for their patience and continuous support, therefore, we are offering a 10% discount on all orders, through January 31, 2001. I do want to stress, that since we were having such problems, you may have thought that you placed an order with us, and you may have even gotten aconfirmation from our site saying we received your order, but we did not get the order. The server has somehow messed up the way we receive the orders and we have been working on this for over 2 months now. We truly apologize for this, but this is something that we have NO control over and cannot fix ourselves. We are truly at the mercy of our server. Now, we are wondering if anyone out there has DSL and if their DSL provider also does web hosting. We are looking for a faster connection as well as anew web host. We are hoping that we will be able to make things better for those of you who do like to visit our site. I use the FrontPage program to create my web site and am open to any suggestions on what servers might be better able to help us out, but I do need a server who offers web hosting with FrontPage extensions. I thank you for your input. I do apologize for using this forum to reach all of you, but other than this forum, I do not know how else to make our customers aware of the problem we have been having. I just want all of those who have placed an order in the last 2 months, who have not heard from us or have not received their order, please make sure that you e-mail me at: hannah@infinet.com I do wish all of you the very best in the new year. I won't bother you any longer. Please e-mail me, privately, with your suggestions or information on the web hosting sites and DSL, I don't want to clutter the WW with any responses to me, and therefore be a problem to readers who are not interested.
