I have made 2 of the baskets but never was able to understand the directions for the roses. It seems I bought the booklet at a shop in someone's basement in Maine, and they had the basket woven on display. The roses are beautiful and are probably quite easy, once you get started. If anyone else has this booklet and has made these roses, can you please let me know how to make these roses? I don't have a problem with the "center" directions; it's the petals I can't grasp. On another note, I've noticed a cute little thing for quite awhile now, and wondered if anyone else sees this the same way? At the end of each WW's issue, David has a message about unsubscribing. Is it my 43-year-old eyes, or does the 2nd line momentarily appear upside down? (Almost like a mirrored effect) I think it's kind of neat! I never asked for an easier way to sand the staves (cherry, oak, etc.) for the Nantucket's. The members of WW came thru for me and have made this a joy again instead of me dreading that part. I think Nantucket's are beautiful, even though I like to weave anything and everything. Thanks to all of you. My husband even sat down and read all the emails so he could help me with the power tools. Christmas is a couple days away-Merry Christmas. New Years is a week away-Happy New Year. Commercial stains are FLAMMABLE...oil based or not. And most stains have some type of oil in them. This is to include, Deft, Minwax, Weaver's Stain, Sherwin Williams, Watco... Torching is meant to be done BEFORE any stain application, it's just a different type of manicuring. I know some of you have told Mark & I that you torch your dried baskets.... But, please DO NOT do this. Dry or Wet, DO NOT do this. Please. Important Tip: Torch BEFORE you stain your baskets. Happy Holidays Mark & Dollie Koch The Weaver's Stain Family %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 4 I. 70 Date: Sat, 23 Dec 2000 20:47:52 -0800 From: Joyce fisher To: David Collins References: 1 Hello Everyone, I am usually a lurker but want to take this opportunity to wish everyone Happy Holidays. I have finished my shows for the year, taught the last of my classes, even cleaned my studio and will load the motor home right after Christmas to spend three months in Arizona. I even have my "basket box" ready. To those of you who are in the snowy and cold areas--been there, done that, don't want to do it anymore. The warmer weather calls even though we have had very little cold weather yet in Nevada. I have enjoyed reading your comments this year and will look forward to having loads more of good advice during the next year. David, thank you for all you do for us! I did visit Jan Cronkite's shop in Waterville, where she helped me with the cord I need for a basket repair job. I missed the obvious and I'm grateful to here for pointing it out to me! Where would we be without good people to jog our brains now and then! I didn't introduce myself, as there was a class in progress, so you might not recall my visit, but the cordage I made from 00 rr is working fine. Thank you. Also visited Maurine Joy in Bath. Maurine has some very nice ceramic embellishments designed by her and made locally. I really appreciate the people who give work to our home-grown craftspeople instead of getting their goods from overseas. (Now if we could just grow our own reed here...) Maurine works with a number (3 I think) metalworkers and about the same number of potters. Good for you, Maurine. I was interested in Joy's comments on Indian basketmakers. Maybe someone can shed some light on one of my puzzlements: the Maine basketmakers organization uses the word Indian, as in Maine Indian Basketmakers, but I get the feeling we are un-PC if we non-Indians use the term "Indian." Is there a double standard here? Or not? Since it's Christmas I'll not do any more rabble rousing, but hope y'all have safe and sane New Year's eve. We just returned from a wonderful December workshop and tour in the Mayan Caribbean, full of sunshine and basket making, weaving with palm, bead work on gourds and created lots of interesting fiber art. The temperature was perfect as we sat outside under gently swaying palms and worked the magic of creation. We went on our jungle tour and visit to a Mayan village and saw the ruins at Tulum. Also went snorkeling out to the reef as Bert, our 72 year young gal wanted to add that to her "been there-done that" wall! We saw turtle, manta rays, barracuda and an immense variety of tropical fish in all color and size. Evenings were spent with our group at various restaurants sampling delicious Mexican and Mayan foods and enjoying each others company (along with our share of Margaritas!) If this all sounds too appealing to miss, there's still a few spots left on my February workshop. For more information e-mail Rita@fiberarttours.com or check out the website www.fiberarttours.com I hope you are all enjoying the holidays and everyone loves the hand made baskets and artwork they received for Christmas. Rita %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Stories Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2000 12:00:20 -0800 (PST) From: Joanne Howard To: jill@jchoatebasketry.com CC: David Collins Jill Choate, I thoroughly enjoy your Alaskan stories on Weavers Words. I live in Honolulu, Hawaii and I feel like weare at total opposite ends of living!! I have warm sunny days. Tropical breezes blowing through the palm tress on the oceans edge. Just last night my family took an open air trolley ride to our downtown area to view our Honolulu City Lights. It was a beautiful sight. Most people wore Aloha shirts with short sleeves. As I sat in my trolley wearing a Lands End red turtle neck, long sleeve shirt (to get into the mood) I found myself (at times) sweating and wishing it was just a little cooler. Then I read your stories of frost bite smiles, and I think to myself, What A Wonderful Life!!!! As you enjoy your cold, and I enjoy my warmth, Happy Holidays to you and your precious dogs!!! Check out the NBO website at www.nationalbasketry.org. I am interested in knowing if there is a WW member that signs her baskets TG 00. I received a beautiful double wine basket for Christmas from a friend in New Hampshire. I checked for a signature on the basket to see if it might of been made by a WW member. I checked the subscriber's list and found Tracey Gower and Tracey Green. Just interested!
