Now I am shocked again & deeply sorrowful at the news of her passing on Friday. I can hardly believe it; just last summer we taught next to each other, laughing & joking as always. I am thankful for the time I was given to get to know her a bit. Does anyone know her dear husband's name? He would always be vending with her at conferences; I would like to send my condolences, but his name escapes me. Thanx. I am horribly late in acknowledging at this site that I got a wonderful Gourd from Shirley Allright. I can't believe she had time to make the gourd and a small necklace while in the midst of moving!!! The Gourd is stained and has fall leaves heat etched into it, each painted differently. It goes just perfectly with a fall tote I just did with painted leaves on the leather handles! Shirley, how did you know? And the small necklace is a welcome addition to my collection, more so because it is different colors and of a different design than all my others. THANK you again, Shirley. You do awesome Gourd work. Oh and someone on the Atlantic Coast should have a basket by the time they read this. Real life got in the way of weaving and mailing, but my swap basket is finally out! As fate would have it, I was without computer for a while, so everything is behind. I had tons of email to catch up on once we got back up and running. I think I'm finally caught up on Weavers Words!... I'm sure you are all asking why would you want to go to a basket shop in Vegas when there are so many other things to do. Well, I live in Alaska and we really don't have any basket shops or similar here. So I was hoping to find one during my travels. I had woven all year for this particular show. I too did get the question, "Did you make all these baskets yourself?". I was very proud to say yes and see the look of amazement in their eyes. You see I had quite a few to say the least. When we loaded up the van we only had room for me to sit and drive. You could not see out the back of the van because the baskets were stacked up to the roof. I had small baskets in big baskets. I did get a few special orders and was able to promote my basket class at one of the Marine Corp base arts & craft center. As for what baskets men like, my husband David loves a little spacedyed melon basket I wove when I first started taking basket classes. He is extremely protective and has even placed a little tag on the basket that says it is not for sale. One of my Japanese students picked it up and wanted to purchase it but before I could explain he was bounding down the hall with a duplicate I had recently wove. No matter what I weave it will never compare to the little melon basket. Now I do have something to say about the "L" and Hen type of baskets. First I would love to thank them for printing those wonderful catalogs that give us so many ideas!!! Second, the introduce many people to the wonderful world of baskets. I know many converts who started out purchasing those type of baskets and then could not see paying those prices when they could weave a better basket themselves at a fraction of the cost. A few days before the craft fair my next-door neighbor purchased 3 large baskets. She absolutely had to have them before her Hen basket party. Well she showed them off and now I have a private showing of my baskets in February. I do take special orders but the problem I find is that many will pick up a basket and say they like this particular basket but they want it bigger, different color, different weave and filled bottom. When I ask them what they liked about the original basket they say the handle and painted ask strip. AAARRRGGGG!!!!! Many do not understand the work that goes into creating your own pattern from scratch. They seem to think that we can whip it up out of the blue and have it ready in a few days. That is especially not true when it comes to getting supplies here from the states. I hope everyone happy weaving and warm holiday memories. Even a post to Weaver's Words two weeks ago hasn't elicited a response from her. If she got sick or had an unexpected emergency I am truly sorry, but it's been almost a month since the mailing deadline and she, or someone with access to her computer should have written a brief note to Weaver's words to let us know what's going on. I thought we all knew that the responsibilities of the coordinator do not end on the mailing deadline. I am grateful to have received a lovely basket on Dec. 9, with a note from the weaver that explained the delay, but there are still people waiting. There are a few of us in communication and we're thinking about starting a new group, instead of Weaver's Words, we'll be Weavers Waiting. The membership vetoed the idea of having it in Branson, so there's no time to organize and find another place in KC large enough to handle the numbers. I have also heard that unless a chairperson steps forward, the St. Louis convention in 2002 will also not take place. There will be a "convention" in Branson Missouri, however, on May 18, 19, 20. I'm not sure who to contact for the registration materials which are due out in January or February I believe. Barb in Vienna Barb & Mike Byrne Come see what a RELAXING GETAWAY can be!! Then I make a list of the teachers I want and when their classes are. Do the same for your favorite baskets. Then check for conflicts and prioritize in 1st, 2nd, 3rd choice order. Set up a schedule grid and try to fill each slot with your first choice for that slot. Repeat until all your spaces are filled. Trade off among your remaining choices to decide on your back-ups in case a first choice class is full. Anyone? - Would somebody please describe a "German basket bottom"? All this discussion has me curious. IBA 2001 Convention will be held at a new hotel, The Sheraton Hotel at the Keystone At The Crossing, on the north side of Indpls. May 10-13, 2001. Besides a great location for our convention, there is really good shopping and restaurants. No one should every go hungry. Each year it gets better and better, and each year we need volunteers to help at convention. Rumor has it that we treat our volunteers "very good." Even better than a lighter is a small butane torch. I found mine at Farm and Fleet for $20 and could probably sell hundreds if I had them in my shop! The flame is adjustable and easier to control than a lighter because it shoots straight out instead of only going up like a lighter. Works terrific. Of course, always dampen your basket first.
