If you're not in one - you're really missing out! Just wanted to share that note - our's started with just a couple of us at church meeting in the church basement for a children's playgroup - one day we decided to take a basket class at our local parks department - then took another, and another, and then we decided we could do this on our own and do it much cheaper! Now we have a lovely group of weaver's - sometimes we all weave the same basket - some times we do what we call potpourri day (weave whatever you want!). It's not hard to get a group started - once you do, you'll never want to stop weaving! We recently tried something new --- we used a lighter to burn the basket hairs off the basket when we finished weaving. We've always done it the hard way and cut them - but one of our members read about the burning technique and boy does it work! Makes you a little nervous at first - but once you see that you're not going to send your basket up in flames - you will love it! Saves a lot of time! Also - we tried the multi dyeing technique which is sometimes referred to as space dyeing (we think) - that is really a great way to change the look of a basket --- if you haven't done that - we highly recommend it! That's it - just wanted to share our two cents worth! Thanks for all the sharing you do - we really enjoy reading and trying your ideas. Janie for the guild that needs a name - any one have any suggestions?? %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weavers Words Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 23:50:55 -0500 From: "Brian Rhodus" To: "David Collins" Hi all. I do several shows and 90% of the time I weave while I'm sitting there, and I am always asked several times a day "Do you make ALL these?" Even at shows that I've been to for several years. It always astonishes me. I also had someone bring me the "L" catalogue (a consultant) and showed me the bell baskets. Not only was the basket $43 but the bow at the top is $8! But if they can get those prices then more power to them. But I made one (and a bow too) right away with plans to make more and I love it! Thanks for the inspiration "L". I would appreciate if the swap coordinator would contact me. I haven't received a basket either and just wanted to check to make sure it hasn't got lost somewhere between point A and point B. So to be able to teach locally here in southern Minnesota, I have just teamed up with a furniture stripper in Plainview, Minnesota to teach weekend seat weaving and basket classes at his shop. Mine is much to tiny to even think of teaching here anymore and his shop is only about 15 miles from me. Since these classes are not being offered through community education programs, I will be able to make a decent living. It seems you never get paid enough to make it worth your while in community ed classes, do you? Only bad thing is that we will have to do all our own advertising. The good thing about community ed classes is that the advertising is all taken care of by them! My friend and furniture stripper, Ed Gold, has a lovely and large facility perfect to hold weekend classes for about 12-15 students at a time. He is only open on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, great for most people that work daily during the week. His work area and my teaching area are in separate rooms that can be closed off from one another and there is a big work sink and great big bathroom too! Hopefully, these classes will really take off and then Ed will be offering other types of arts & crafts classes later on, I'm the first teacher in what hopes to be a "series." Date: Mon, 4 Dec 2000 14:29:54 -0600 From: Dianne Gleixner To: "'David Collins'" Hi everyone. A couple posts ago someone asked about interesting comments we've heard from our customers. I have one to share with you. I had my last craft show for the year this past weekend. Two ladies came into my both and one says, "Oh, these are Wicker Plus baskets!" Now, I don't know how wide spread this company is, but there is a store locally called Wicker Plus. They sell imported baskets of all kinds. I was almost too shocked to comment, since I think my baskets are obviously of a much higher quality, but managed to say, "No, I make all my own baskets, Wicker Plus baskets are imported." These ladies seemed quite astonished to hear that people actually "make" baskets! They couldn't imagine anyone actually sitting there weaving a basket! I've heard the "Are these "L" baskets?" question before, but for some reason was really taken aback this time. Maybe because people pay big bucks for "L" baskets and people think they are the greatest thing around, it almost seems like a compliment (although it's not), so comparing my baskets to not-so-high-quality imports seemed like a huge cut on my baskets. Oh well, I got over it and realize that these ladies have no clue on what makes a basket worth buying. Cathryn P - thank you for the link to the "Pink Ribbons" basket! What a wonderful basket and a great way to pay tribute to breast cancer survivors and the members of their families. Thank you to everyone who has shared their swap basket stories with us. It's always fun to read about the baskets others make to share with someone else. I hope to participate in the next swap, since the hectic show season is done for me for a while. Margie in Montana - your story is similar to one I hear often. People walk into my booth, look over the baskets, and ask/say "You make all these?!" Sometimes it's even from someone looking for something specific when they ask "Do you have something like this, but in blue?" Or "something like this but larger?" When I tell them that I don't but could make something for them if they'd like to place a special order, THEN they say, "Oh, you MAKE these?" I'll never understand how someone shopping at a craft show doesn't realize that most of the stuff for sale is supposed to be hand crafted. I guess this goes to show how some of the craft shows are going downhill and accepting buy/sell just to fill booth spaces. Shoppers are coming to accept, and even expect, it. And I see it in shows that are supposed to be pretty strict about it. I'll keep screening out shows from my list, and let promoters know that art/craft shows are no place for mass produced/imported merchandise. Darlene - I wish you the best of luck in getting your new store set up and opened. It always seems that any task a person take on always gets larger and larger the more you get into it. And that is especially true when remodeling an older building! Pretty soon you'll be looking back to these days with a smile knowing all the hard work you did is paying off. Let us know when those pictures are on-line for viewing. Ginger - we've just been discussing a basket called "The Promise Basket". Check the archives for the previous couple of issues and you'll find info on the pattern authors and where to purchase the pieces needed to make it. I'd love to hear about what baskets people are making as gifts for the holidays. Please share. I still don't know yet what I'm going to give as gifts. I always make one for my mom, so she's come to expect it. I better get busy. But first, I better get going on the basket I'm making for our guilds Christmas exchange coming up. I can't give too much away since some of you are reading this! You'll just have to wait! Sorry so taking up so much space. I hope everyone is having fun getting ready for the holidays. Have a safe and happy one! It came! It (finally) came! My swap basket that is, and though the waiting was suspenseful, it was worth the wait. I received a lovely twill basket from Carole Post. It's a rectangular two x two twill with 1/2-inch spokes and 3/8 (I think or maybe 7mm) weavers. The shaping is great! What makes it extra special is that on 1/2 of the front of the basket the twill weavers have been overlaid with 1/4 weavers in a lovely deep, dark (almost black) purple. How did you get that lovely color, Carole? Carole said it was the first time she tried that twill design and it's great - I'm going to have to try this sometime (after I get all the planned Christmas gifts made.) I've found another use for those bits and pieces of reed. My students were decorating clear glass Christmas ornaments to sell (I'm trying to teach the virtues of care, compassion, and helping others) and then donate the proceeds to charity. As I was working with students one on one to paint ornaments, I let others add short (1 1/2 inch or less) scraps of colored reed to clear glass 'balls.' Very pretty - in my opinion - and very easy. If I ever get the time to weave enough mini's to do a tree, I'll add some of these too. Missouri School for the Blind, where I am counselor, is celebrating its 150th anniversary in February. One of the skills that blind students were taught in the late 1800s was basket weaving. Someone found a picture in the school archives of some young women weaving. It seems they were working with very narrow (1/4 inch?) flat reed or all round reed. No wooden bases were used, but the border was formed by the spokes being turned back into the basket walls, leaving an open 'loop' of reed on top. One of these baskets appeared to be double-walled. Anyone have any ideas how this could be accomplished? One or two of the baskets appeared to have a wider, dyed strip woven into the sides. I've been asked to demonstrate weaving or caning (girls learned weaving, boys caning) at the anniversary celebration and thought it would be fun to have baskets similar to the ones in this picture. I hope to have started several and then will let each student or visitor who comes by do a bit of weaving. I (she said ambitiously) plan to have enough baskets that would just need to have the rim finished off so that each teacher and administrator could have one. I made one of Jill Choate's figure 8 baskets for my husband. I was lucky enough to purchase an antler from Jill that was scrimshawed with a trout. I wove the basket in 'stream' colors- browns, greens, and several blues and did some free-hand curves and waves to make it look more like water. I even added some fish leather! I trimmed it with a large trout fly in contrasting colors. Of all the things I've ever given him for his office, this is the one he keeps on display. Beverly Seegert, author of Black Creek Country News basket magazine, passed away yesterday, Dec. 8, at home. Beverly suffered with pancreatic cancer. I had occasion to see Beverly at shows she did in our area, she was a great weaver and a very gracious lady. A topic of conversation in past issues of WW was about what would be done with all your weaving "stuff" should you pass away. At the end of October, Beverly contacted me and I am sure many other local weavers, to say she was devoting all her time to fighting this dreaded disease and was selling out all her supplies. Since Beverly was also a teacher, her supply of weaving materials was overwhelming! I bought a good share and I am sure others did as well& I know she was glad to see it go to us "basket cases"!
