To my knowledge, this was probably the first pattern written with this base, and it was inspired by Eileen' strip to Germany. Along with Eileen, Joan Moore also went to Germany, and one of her baskets with this base is "German Chocolate". I have made both of these designs and love them---give them a try! Make it as you would a door or wall basket. The "bottom" of the basket is just the bottom of the handle. I've seen, but haven't made, the peanut basket set--one for the peanuts, one for the shells. My husband loves pistachios--maybe I should make one! Also, I have a pattern for, but haven't made, a remote control basket. It's two baskets woven together, like the peanut basket set, but a little smaller scale. One basket is shorter, for the remote, and the other is taller, for the TV guide. I think I got the pattern at basketpatterns.com. I have made CD baskets--along the same lines as square napkin baskets, but to fit CDs (standing up) in. On a different note, I received my NCBA info and I'm so excited. I've never been to a basket convention! I can't wait until March! Is there a method to writing down your 16 "picks" of classes? Happy Holidays Katy Ulrich - Thank you for all of your hard work on this swap. This is my first basket swap and Ann Thompson made it very special for me. Ann sent me a wonderful Flo Hoppe "Oval Gathering Basket". The round reed baskets have intrigued me, but have not actually done one. This basket is so perfect. There are at least 3 different size reeds used in this basket and the finishing border is so pretty. I am really just so over whelmed. Then she filled this wonderful basket with notepad, candle, calendar and kitchen towel. In her note to me, she said she had taken some workshops with Flo and her husband, she told me that this was the first basket out from under Flo's watchful eyes. In my opinion she has the technique down and does not have any of those "design flaws" she mentioned. Thank you for this priceless basket. I will return to my peeking from the outside edges of the circle. Happy Holidays to everyone! Also, I wish you all a great Holiday season, Darla Krahling - As you said, any basket would be suitable for a man; it's what you call it that determines the use - for instance, a medium-size shallow tray can be a "pocket stuff" holder, for the wallet, pocketknife, change, tape measure, nail clippers and the rest of the stuff that men empty their pockets of at night. If the man's a beer drinker, a basket made using a six-pack as a mold has gone over well with my men. My husband's hobby is making homebrew beer, and one Christmas we gave homebrew in a six-pack basket, and still get comments on that. I made it on a swing "D" handle and used slotted construction paper for the dividers. Hope this helps. David, again, thanks for a great website for us basket makers, and have an extra-special holiday! Pat Walworth Gilmer, TX Where it stopped raining just as the pond got full - good timing! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 4 I. 66 Date: Sat, 25 Nov 2000 11:06:59 EST From: DeeGrin@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Happy Post thanksgiving to Everyone. I am thankful for so many things, but want to mention this one, especially. I am really thankful to David and all the time he spends and the enjoyment of reading other weavers thoughts, even though we do get controversial sometimes. Thank you so much David. Darla, the peanut basket from Suzanne Moore's North Carolina basket shop is great for men. I have ordered so many bases and sold so many of them in the past two years. She will sent you a free pattern, I am sure. It is not the one that has two baskets attached. It is a wooden base with a handle. I have had customers use it for candy, seasonal nuts and even to hold two rolls of toilet tissue. It is the one basket I made for my husband, first and let him actually keep it and uses it all the time. You put the peanuts in one side and the shells in the other. I sell mine for 24.95. I also use one in my blazer to keep sunglasses a pen etc. in. Sheri - Eileen Laport does German Weave patterns. I am sure most of the basket weaving suppliers carry her patterns. It is really a fun weave to do and very pretty. Pam Woodberry - Your comments were very good about the pricing issues as well as Mary Hoopers. I am finishing up my baskets for a show next weekend and plan to spend the day tagging and pricing. I have made several small ones to sell from $7.00 on up for children and teachers, etc. to buy for Christmas exchanges. My husband comes in and teases me and says get busy make the big ones!!! I have several customers who have been buying L. baskets for years, but tell me they like mine better, which always makes me feel good. My oldest daughter still buys an L. occasionally! I hope everyone has a wonderful month. Just take a coffee or tea break and enjoy your weaving. I am really enjoying my new friend that I meant through WW. Looking forward to NC. If you haven't made reservations yet, there were only about 10 king size rooms left on Friday. My daughter asked my 5-year-old granddaughter what she wanted for Christmas and she said "LOVE". If only all of us could think like a child again!!! Last year when she was visiting, I had promised to color with her and was trying to finish my taxes and she said "DeeDee, people work is more important that paper work" Boy did that get the message across. She also asked me one time when I was visiting and knitting which I usually am doing. She asked, "Why are you always making things, why don't you just buy them?" I replied because they are made with love. Happy Holidays Dee in Florida where it is nice to weave outside, except the wind dries the reed out to fast. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Art & Craft Show Experiences Date: Sat, 25 Nov 2000 11:06:36 -0800 (PST) From: Margie Reck To: davidc@iei.net Have any of you had this same experience? I am sitting in my booth at a juried art and craft fair where they are very strict about allowing only handmade objects that must be sold by the artist, only one medium per booth, etc. Surrounding me are wonderful paintings, pottery, loom weavings, and wood turned bowls. I usually try to weave in my booth as it makes the weekend pass faster and also interests people (especially children) so that they enter my booth. (The first step to selling). Some one will inevitably walk up tome and say, "oh, did you MAKE all of these baskets?" I almost fell off my chair the first time, but now I smile sweetly and tell them that yes, I did, and take the opportunity to explain how there is no machine capable of weaving a basket and that no, they are not imported. I am writing this on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and very happy I decided not to do a Christmas show today! I hate to see us disparage any particular material. Professional basket maker/artists spend a lot of time learning how to market themselves and their work to buyers. It's a great basket --so be on the look-out for when this pattern becomes available for sale! Thanks so much Martha for the basket and all the wonderful tuck-ins. Also - Can anyone help me find a pattern for the Japanese Sewing basket? It is made with all round reed and has a very small opening at the top. I have been "lurking". It seems that it has taken all my time and energy to get the business which I purchased (Union Station Studio) going. I have really been putting in some long hours helping the carpenter some in the daytime work on the floors at the old Roller Mill Building where my shop will be located. Then I work the pottery end at night. While tearing out floors to replace weak spots, we ran into some pretty bad termite damage. As a result, many huge beams and supports had to be replaced between the basement and first floor. We had to call in more carpenters to help for a few days, some of the beams were just too heavy for the two of us. We had hoped to be open by Christmas, now it is looking like it will be the first of the year. I am taking pictures of the progress. Hopefully my husband, Sid, will put them on our web site for me so everyone can see this wonderful old building, which was built around 1912. I hope my basket shop will have a new home soon!!! I am actively making pottery embellishments and bases and am able to fill any orders. I am just still working out of boxes for inventory items like handles, weaver, etc. Will keep you posted on the progress. I saw a question for which I wanted to send a reply. Violets in Bloom By Debra Hammond Hammond Baskets 1709 Turkey Hill Rd. East Earl, PA 17519 Phone (717) 445-4653 She offered a kit at the convention for $15. My DH likes "useful' baskets - doesn't want frills. I gave a guy friend of mine a mail/utility basket which he uses all the time - tho' his wife keeps after him to clean it out!! (It uses a 14' wide x 10" high handle - got the idea out of a pamphlet somewhere, I think). Thinking of the hubby - something to hold change - or nails etc - maybe that one that has the slotted top? or a small wooden based basket? Ideas, Ideas! I'd better get weaving for the folk on my list!!! Helen I plan to check out " Feldenkrais" to learn more about it. Anything you can do to keep your body at a "neutral' position when weaving will help. I teach at a community college with slightly higher than kitchen size counters. I have to remind students that they make a wonderful option to use instead of bending over the lower desk size tables. Does wonders for the back! Same with your wrists. I have to remind myself not to keep them cocked back when I'm weaving and holding the basket. If I place the work at a level where they (my wrists) remain more or less straight, there's less strain on them. Stretching and taking breaks is important, too. I'll bet that most of you who weave a lot have wonderful grips when you shake hands. Gotta treat those muscles, nerves and bones just like any other athlete (unfortunately for me - my hands may be strong -but when I'm weaving a lot, I tend to forget the rest of me!!!)
