Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2000 19:11:13 -1000 From: The Keener Clan To: davidc@iei.net Aloha from Honolulu, Did you all hear the loud scream that came from Honolulu yesterday???? Joanne and I got our NC conventions books in the mail (thanks, you all, for shipping them priority mail!)--Joanne got hers at 10am and I had to wait with baited breath until 4:30--and we are super excited. It is unbelievable and now at last, seems like it is something we are really going to participate in. We can*t wait!!!!! Joanne made our hotel accommodations last night---and now to work on a cheap flight. Joy, your discussion was (mostly) well received and I think it is neat that we have this forum to discuss such topics. I was thinking of saying "well, we all do the best we can and get what we can" but now that I think of it, that isn*t true. My baskets are priced on the medium side and I could price them cheaper and sell more, but that I would feel like I was "wh-----". And I do feel good about selling them for the price I do and I think that is important. And I agree with Kate Conroy--I never lower the price of my baskets. I just bring them back to another fair if they don*t sell. I sold a casserole basket at the last fair that was 2 years old and two ladies got into a tiff over who was going to get it. You never know what might sell from year to year. This year, there was someone selling imports ($22 step baskets) and I was miffed at first, but then I thought, "If people want to buy Wal-Mart stuff at a fair, then let them." Don*t get into a frenzy over something of which you have no control. North Carolina, here we come! I was unaware of your expertise and of your proximity to Longabarger. You have correctly chastised me for my impudence and I shall return to my weaving and try to stay out of other people's business in the future. Joy: I'll go along with your suggestion that we drop the pricing discussion. It's a topic better discussed in a different forum. Mary Hooper %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 4 I. 64 Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 09:36:18 +0100 From: Judith Spates To: David Collins To Donna Young . . . From reading your last posting, I would say the only problem you have selling your baskets is the fact that you live too close to the Longaberger factory. That is really a shame, especially since you make such beautiful baskets. I don't think our discussion on pricing will benefit you at all. The pricing discussion is dealing more with economic factors within a given area as well as fairly pricing your baskets when you have other basket weavers at the same craft fair. Longaberger competition is an entirely different issue. Depending on how badly you want to make a profit from selling your baskets, I would highly recommend that you find a shop (perhaps in a tourist area) that would be willing to sell your baskets for you. By doing this, you wouldn't have to do any more frustrating craft fairs. There are lots of country gift shops in my area that would love to hear from you! If you're interested, please e-mail me directly and I'll give you some leads. Another option is making up some sample baskets and sending them to a well-known mail order company for consideration. You might be pleasantly surprised . . . especially if they decide to carry one or more of your baskets. Happy weaving to all!! It is the first I participated in, and I had a blast! Normally, I am a lurker. My buddy Darla (Starlak) convinced me to come out of hiding. My swap buddy was D. Hall. D. wove me a beautiful little natural reed and braided sea grass basket on a swing D handle. She put a pretty wooden leaf tie on in fall colors (just perfect) on the basket. To match that tie-on, she included some leaf soap (did you make this D.? It smells wonderful) I have just the spot in my powder room for the basket to perch. Thank you, D. for such a lovely basket. I was all over central and southern Ohio, KY and WV, but never directly in the Dresden area... perhaps you should branch out geographically? I did really well at the Bob Evans festivals in Rio Grande, and did a whole lot of church bazaars. I also taught a lot of classes... perhaps you might consider teaching - that way you kinda 'grow your own' audience who can appreciate your work. Since moving to Florida I've had to change the sort of thing I make to fit the audience here - so, there are times I really don't like some of the baskets I'm making, but they sell well. I also happen to have a student who only buys "L" baskets, BUT also comes to every class, buys kits and supplies, and often brings friends... so I think what I'm saying is that if what you're doing isn't working, you have to keep trying variations till something clicks. Katie, in the piney woods of north central Florida, where we had a light frost and everyone is shivering! Wimps! haha %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Customer Comments Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 11:39:49 -0800 (PST) From: Margie Reck To: davidc@iei.net I would like to start a discussion about comments or questions (good, bad, humorous) from customers about our wonderful, hand-woven baskets. I would like to start it off with a pet peeve of mine. I weave mostly, one of a kind, contemporary baskets - not wild and eclectic, but what I consider art. Many customers comment on how lovely and well-made my baskets are and then ask "but what can I use it for?" I try to educate them in a nice way that not all baskets have to have a function other than a pleasing addition to a room - like a painting! Functional baskets are great, I weave and use many of them, but educating the public about how some may be simply enjoyed is difficult. Is it craft or art? I say, BOTH! On the humorous side, anyone who has sat in a booth repeating the same information about your baskets and smiling for three days understands how easily we can be entertained. I get a kick out of the six year old child who comes into my booth, takes one of my business cards, stuffs it into his stack of other cards, smiles and rushes to the next booth. What experiences have you had? Margie in Cameron, Montana %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Bits and Pieces. Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 15:00:24 -0500 From: "John W. Dorris" To: "Weavers Words" Be honest gang. How long did you figure I'd be able to stay out of the current pricing controversy? This is in defense of Mary Hooper-tho' I don't really think she needs defending. When Mary replied to Donna I truthfully thought it was being offered in a spirit of helping. I don't think she was trying put anyone down. She offered what was good advice and the sarcasm she received in return was uncalled for. I doubt she had anyway to know your circumstances or what experience you have. She did just what this group is all about-offer general advice on a current topic of discussion. Life is too short for everyone to be sniping at everyone else for some imagined slight. Let's take advice and comments in the spirit it is given and not take everything so personally. Lois, you are lucky to have a Georgia husband that is helpful. One time a woman had to beg my. husband to take the money when I had taken a break. He is very good at his job but being charming and gracious is not one of his strengths. In fact when I moved to this area I met a friend we had been stationed with many years before and one of her first questions was "is he as sociable as ever"? I assured her he hadn't changed a bit. I think Ga. husbands come in two categories. Sociable and don't bother me, and ne'er the twain shall me. Ok folks--don't get all upset that I'm "dissing" husbands-just my own and he'd be the first to admit he fits in the second category. I've gotten so far off the track I forgot what I was thinking about-not an unusual thing for me these days. Hope everyone has gotten their NC brochure and is having as hard a time as I am deciding what I want to take the most. Joy--my unsociable husband fell on the floor laughing when I told him your comment. Enough for now guess I'll go back to CNN to see the latest in the political wars. Maybe we could just suspend the election 'til next year and vote again with the requirement that both candidates be adults, which would cut out the current group. Billie in Va. There have been some valid points made on both sides. My concern is with the growing influence of capitalism on the basket making business. I am opposed to craftspeople who dupe the general public into thinking that high priced baskets are in some way better that reasonably priced baskets. A case in point: I recently returned from a trip to the Appalachian area. I was looking for an Appalachian White Oak basket to add to my basket collection. We stopped at a place called "The Folk Art Center". It is part of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. While in their gift shop, I found a basket that was priced beyond my wildest imagination. The basket's base was maybe 10" square and stood about 18-20" tall. It was made out of dyed flat read. Here was nothing special about this basket. It didn't have a handle or any embellishments. A beginning weaver with basic weaving skills could have made this same basket. The price - $1,000.00. NO, that is not a typo. The basket was for sale for $1,000.00. How can you justify a price like that? I don't care who made it, there is no flat read basket anywhere that is worth $1,000.00. This comes under the heading of PRICE GOUGING. In the same display area there were some really nice baskets woven out of honeysuckle. These baskets were priced in the $20-$35 range. So why were they so "cheap" when honeysuckle requires so much more preparation than plain flat read? When I am looking to buy a basket, I don't care if is made by a hobbyist or a businessperson. I base my purchase on the quality of the workmanship and the fairness of the price. Joy, pardon my saying so, but you need to lighten up. I don't think the few baskets that I make and sell here in Indiana are a threat to your business. I am a "hobbyist" and proud of it. I weave and sell for fun and relaxation. If I want to sell a "Jelly Jar" basket for $12.00, that is my prerogative. I will not let someone else dictate pricing to me. To quote a dear friend of mine, "Oh, have some fun, go weave a basket". I made a copy of it for my files for the time when I decided to go into the weaving business. Sorry you've hurt your hands, One of my best friends cut my finger with a scissors once it was sore for quite a while. (She reads weavers words, I thought I'd make her feel bad, just one more time :) ) Fellow weavers, lets try not to get to catty, if you want to chew someone out, perhaps a better way to do it would be to e-mail them directly, it is possible to have different opinions and different ways to do things and still get along. This has been a very educational forum for me, I do not feel comfortable being caught up in bickering. I think there are many good points to pricing and selling baskets. My best piece of advice, if it's not working for you, then you need to move on.... either find another craft fair, travel further to sell, raise your prices, lower your prices...most importantly do it with dignity and respect. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Kid's swap Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 13:26:46 -0600 From: Dave Plourde To: davidc@iei.net Hello weavers, I would like to tell you all how much my two daughters enjoyed the latest kid swap. My older daughter (BP) received her basket on Oct 24, which was one day after her birthday. (I had informed her swap partner of the day) She received a cute, well-made basket (of her partner's own design) with a Boyd's bear in it (and she LOVES Boyd's bears!) as well as a nice note wishing her a happy birthday. Well, to say the least, she was thrilled! Both with the basket and gifts, and the timing! So, thank you (L) for the special effort that you made. My younger daughter (AP) was also delighted to receive a nicely made basket (that her partner (A) said was only her second!!) that was stuffed with all of those wonderful goodies that every 9yr old thinks are the best - bath stuff, candy, lip gloss, you name it! I am a self-taught weaver and have been making baskets mostly for fu or 10 years. I have also taught a few classes locally but there wasn't as much interest as I thought. I live in a rural area where there are a couple more basketmakers, but they are very clannish and I have yet to get into their "group" Oh well. The only shows I have really done are local and I know I need to work on making a booth look better. as for a Guild the nearest one I have found yet is about 200 miles away. I was in a Guild once before I moved here and really enjoyed it a lot. I think that is why when I found this site I enjoy reading and hearing from someone with similar interests. As for your curiosity on the electrocution, it was actually from lightning traveling thru the ground. I took a lot out of me and I am grateful that I woke up. Definitely NOT a recommended experience in life. So, beware of storms and know that lightning can travel very far thru the ground and also can strike several miles from an actual storm. I did the same thing, a few years ago, and the first thing I did was push myself away from the table and check my basket for blood. Then I took care of my badly injured finger. Only a TRUE basket maker can understand our priorities. Also, I want to thank Mary Hooper for the information on pricing. I too, thought my baskets weren't worthy, or could not be sold for their true worth. Well, I had a man come into my booth and pick up a Nantucket Basket and he really gave me a Lecture (in the nicest way) about pricing. He said that there ARE people out there who would appreciate my hard work and be willing to pay the price. I took his advice and it worked! I do much better than before. And yes, you do have to know your market. We still have the "I know my Baskets" people who come into a booth, watch me weave and tell me that my baskets are "L" baskets and are not hand made. I do weave my own baskets and all baskets are "Handmade". Can't argue with ignorance. Just hold tight and wait for the person that says, "Do you come from Nantucket Island? Your baskets are just like theirs!" That makes up for the "other people" Enough of this...Thanks again for your input. Some of us do appreciate it. Loved your Mock address!
