But that is not why I am writing today, I am thinking about getting a tax ID number so I can start selling at local festivals, up until now I have sold mostly to friends. I was hoping I could get some advice, I have a walk-in closet filled with reed and handles, do I need to inventory this? Do I need to keep track of where I purchase everything, I buy from several different sources. I would appreciate any and all advice as to how others have gone about getting started. Thank you in advance. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Guild Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 08:53:41 -0500 From: "Peg Weston Brondyke" To: CC: Me again. Donna - Congratulations on increasing your guild membership by 100%! I've been in the Quad-Cities Basketry Guild for maybe 9 years. When I first started, we met frequently, but soon the guild was in danger of extinction (at least in my eyes--maybe nobody else thought so). Thanks to the efforts of a few dedicated weavers (and I can't myself as one of those, since I was in school full time and working on Saturdays for the past 6 years and didn't attend very often), our guild has really grown. At last count, we had around 80 members. We meet every month, and someone usually teaches a basket. We can always take our own materials if we don't want to make that month's basket, and we can get a kit if we want to do it later. We have a basket exchange at Christmas, have started Basket Buddies this year (we exchange names and give little gifts to the person whose name we have), have an overnight at a motel in January, weave at the two local fairs in the summer, do a "make-it-take-it" in November, etc. (Again, I say "we" loosely, since I live an hour away, have two sons, and work, now that I'm out of school, and can't be active in the planning.) We also have a great newsletter, thanks to our editor, and we have a dedicated group of officers. Just think, if everyone brought a friend every month, you'd increase by 100% each time, and you'd have a large guild in no time! Peg in Iowa P.S. I have to work some Saturdays in my new job, but I'm arranging my schedule around Guild meetings! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Southern Basketry Conference Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 07:08:54 -0700 (PDT) From: Joanne Howard To: David Collins Hi everyone, I am back in Orlando after a wonderful weaving weekend at the Southern Basketry Conference. It was a wonderful experience for my first conference/convention. I was so excited about it, I called Lois after the first day and went on and on for about an hour!!! I had never had the experience of weaving with natural materials before and I have to tell you, it is fabulous. My first class was with Mary Hettsmansperger. The room key cozy is so sweet. I had the opportunity to work with birch and learn about beading by using peyote stitch. I am really hooked on beading. I loved working with them. It is so creative. Time consuming but creative. Mary was very patient and so nice. I would love to take classes from her again at another convention. Cass Schorsh was a great naturals instructor. I did my first round reed basket and also used some beautiful red pine and white pine as well as cedar. The pines and petals class was really great. I didn't think I could weave over a glass vase. Never having used these materials or techniques before, I was just a little intimidated. Cass was so kind and patient. I was thrilled to have completed my vase. I think it is one of the best things I have ever done. I most definitely want to get a class with Cass again. Thanks to Sharon James for a great weekend. I had so much fun. Everything was so well organized. The vendors were super. It was great meeting Sue Cooper from Woven Spirit, the ladies from Royalwood, and Patiie!! from Aunt Patties in Georgia. I have tons of kits, patterns, books and fun things to bring back to Hawaii. A special thanks to Pattie and Sue for the treats that you gave me to bring back to my guild. I know that will appreciate your thoughtfulness. Pattie, if you have an e mail address, could you drop me a note? I have about 10 days to pack and get my act together and then back to Hawaii. The past few months on the mainland have been great but it is time to go home. Aloha, Joanne Howard %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Library Find Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 10:15:44 -0500 From: Sarah Hartman Organization: Fuchs Lubricants Co. To: davidc@iei.net Tip: Looking for books that are out of print? Have been able to find several old basketry books (printed in the late 70's and 80's) through my local library. They are part of the interlibrary loan network and have found books by bringing them in from libraries around the country. They are usually on loan for about 4 weeks which is plenty of time to read them and they can always be gotten again. Had the pleasure of being part of the Ash Camp this August. While on vacation in Canada a couple of weeks ago, had the opportunity to use my new found skills. Had rotten fishing weather so had a couple days to weave but had forgotten seagrass for fillers. Not far from camp some trees had been cut so went and pulled some roots. Turned out to be regular pine not spruce but worked up well for rim filler. Stayed an interesting brownish pink which stained well when the baskets were finished. Because of the weather had lots of time for walks. Found some wonderful ash swamps. If we had room in the boat, would have brought logs home for Daniel and for ash camp next year. (The next problem would have been room in the freezer to store it - details, details.) I'm not familiar with her creed, so until we iron out any possible conflicts, I'll have to wait on posting my revised list. Thanks for your forbearance. Can't imagine how we got along before you came along. Mary Hooper & Tony Stubblefield: Thanks for your insights into soggy reed (Creed #1). Since there's no reason other than laziness and/or forgetfulness to soak reed for more than a few minutes, I shall make great efforts to not let it bathe in water for hours and hours and hours. I've never noticed that it frays after oversoaking, but maybe that's because I use quality reed. And I always let my basket dry, then pack down before turning down so I never noticed how much it shrank/shrunk (Creed #9). Lynn Pawley: If you haven't found the Basketmakers Creed that we refer to in Weavers Words, e-mail me and I'll get a copy for you. I viewed your website and our creed is definitely different than your creed. Yours is 40 belated related sayings. Our is more like the Ten Commandments. V 41.51: Lynn Pawley brought to our attention that she has a copyrighted Basketmakers Creed, which is a conglomeration of 40 basket related sayings. To avoid copyright infringement and to keep peace in the family, perhaps we should start using a different word than creed. Any suggestions? Credo? Commandments? Whatever we call it, they are great basket rules to live by. And they're not just for beginners. I've been weaving 12 years and found myself guilty (but no longer) of breaking Rule #1 consistently. Is there a soggy reed anonymous support group out there? The Group At Large: I heard years & years ago (before it really applied to me) that letting your cat drink from the soaking reed water can be harmful to it's health because of the chemicals used in processing reed. With my recent move and a new baskemaking process I often have reed soaking outside in a bucket and my cat is a HUGE drinker. Never seen any cat drink so much. I often find him drinking the reed water if I forget to cover it. The past couple of days Puff has been doing something like coughing/choking/sneezing. Eyes look clear and no runny nose but I think I should take to the vet just to make sure. Does anyone know anything about not letting your cat drink reed water. Do we need a creed for this? Thanking you in advance Elaine Robson from Greenville, SC where we're having weather today. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Shave Horses Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 21:14:03 EDT From: RoboTex2@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Hi David: Can't start without saying thank you David. You're a doll! To The Group At Large: Some time ago I inquired from this group about the availability of shave horses. I received responses, followed up on leads and didn't come up with what I was looking for so I solicited the help of my handy, engineering husband who loves woodworking projects. He designs gas turbines for GE. He agreed to design and build shave horses per my specs and has now completed the final version after three prototypes. Peter, my husband, is multi-talented, a perfectionist, and his attention to detail cannot be reproached. To get to the point of all this, if you are in the market for a functional, high quality (not furniture quality which means it's expensive), handsome sit-on type shave horse, please contact me. I'll send you an information and fact sheet along with a colored photo. You'll be impressed. It even has two wood pins to hang the draw knife on. And if you need a draw knife, I've been collecting them from antique stores and flea markets and having them professionally sharpened. There not easy to come by and I have an inventory of only six. If you're interested you can reach me at (864) 879-7877 or robotex2@aol.com or 7 Covey Court, Greer, SC 29650. It seems that Mary Hooper has a "Creed for Beginning Basketweavers" which is a handout of frequently used teacher mantras! It is very good and covers a lot of problem areas and tips. Also Cindy in Ohio had emailed me that she has a poem from a religious book that she has been referring to. She says it is listed as anonymous. Since the list that I have created was a collection of sayings from fellow weavers, friends and also created some myself I am confident that my creed did not come from any type of religious book!!!! So, my apologies for stirring up the pot. With all the controversy over the years with copyright infringement, it is imperative that we all keep a heads up if something sounds questionable. I appreciate the prompt and honest responses from these two weavers and want to inform all WW readers that although we have similar words in the title of our products, the content of the poems are not at all similar and the names are also not exact. I am glad to be able to have resolved the mystery! As Rosanne Roseannadanna said on Saturday Night Live "There's always something". Sincerely, Lynn Pawley Bskcreed@aol.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Creed for Beginning Basketmakers Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 23:11:40 -0400 From: "Mary Hooper" To: "David Collins" References: 1 Dear WWers: After consultation with Lynn Pawley, owner of the copyrighted humorous "Basketmaker's Creed," we agree that there is no copyright infringement involved in the following "Creed for Beginning Basketmakers." Feel free to reproduce this and distribute it without charge to your students and customers. You don't have to give me credit for it, but I'd rather not go down in basketmaking history as Ms. Anonymous. Mary Hooper Creed for Beginning Basketweavers By Mary Hooper 1. Thou shalt never weave with dry reed, lest thy reed break; or soggy reed, lest it turn hairy. 2. Thou not shalt overlap weavers on corners; too much corner thickness a clumsy basket makes. 3. Thou shalt identify the smooth and rough sides of each piece of reed and place the rough surface inside the basket. 4. Thou shalt inspect thy kit and be sure thy weavers and thy stakes are correctly identified. 5. Thou shalt remember that the position of the spokes determines the shape of the basket. Spokes are like infants, they take constant care and attention. 6. Thou shalt read thy pattern completely before beginning. 7. Thou shalt obtain and use sharp pointed tools for cutting. Sewing scissors are for cutting fabric. 8. Thou shalt not become easily discouraged; keep practicing. 9. Thou shalt pack down before turning down. 10. Thou shalt cut thy longest lengths of reed first, lest thou come up short. 11. Thou shalt cut one entire length of reed before starting another. This preventeth waste. 12. Thou shalt always buy patterns with colored pictures, or if without color photos, then from their creator or a shop that guarantee-eth the authenticity of the pattern, lest thou purchase bootleg patterns, which are stolen property. 13. Thou shalt not store neither thy reed nor thy baskets in plastic bags, except for brief periods, lest such become mildewed. Likewise, leave them not outdoors at night, lest the dew fall on them and mildew bloom. 14. Whenever possible, thou shalt mark thy tools with thine own name, lest they become lost. 15. Thou shalt always remember an experienced weaver is just a phone call or e-mail message away. Ask for help. Permission is granted for reproduction and the free distribution of this material. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 4 I. 51 Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 23:18:34 -0400 From: "Donna & Bill L." I received the rules from Jayna Glemby. The basic premise is for you to be able to swap a duplicate pattern you have. Do not swap a pattern that is a copy of a free pattern you copied off the 'net; nor a used, torn or stained pattern. Basically, something you would like to receive. I will e-mail the complete rules to all participants along with their swap partner's e-mail and snail address. I would like you to e-mail me by October 10. In the subject line please put Pattern Swap. Include e-mail address in body of letter. It is easier for me to copy & paste it that way. Also include your full name and address. It is my intention to send you your partner's name etc on Oct. 15. I would expect that everything can be concluded by October 31.
