If it was hand pounded ash it should be satiny smooth and the baskets, depending on the thickness of the splint, almost feather light. Ash has not grain pattern and can be very white in color when new so that maybe what is confusing you. Oak has more grain pattern and is usually much heavier than reed or ash. Reed is almost soft or kind of spongy when you feel it, but split oak or pounded ash is going to have a hard smooth surface. If you were to hold two baskets next to each other the difference would be apparent. I just took my first class with Luke Block today at the MO convention and I am quite pleased with the way my basket turned out. I am taking another from him tomorrow as well. If you aren't familiar with Luke and Willows work, they are from Arkansas and make beautiful white oak baskets. So far I have been good and not spent too much money. We will see how long that lasts! I will write more about my adventures at the MO convention later. I will also write more later about the wonderful Memorial Day weekend classes we had with Martha Wetherbee. I should also have pictures up on my web page from the classes early next week. I will also have teaser pictures of the baskets we are thinking of doing on Martha's return trip. Oh, and one final note before I get to bed so I will be rested for tomorrow's weaving. I have a new dot com address. Your old bookmarks will still work, but it is now easier for me to tell people. I'm going to participate in a co-op to sell some of my baskets. The business will be in someone else's name with five other crafters renting a space from her. Do I need insurance for my share of business? Fire, theft, liability or is she responsible for insurance beings the shop is in her name? I'm doing this and getting ready for the NC weave hosted by the Cape Fear Basketmakers in Fayetteville June 17th. and my wedding day is June 24th. Lets see what else I can cram in there. It's woven with flat reed and can be completed quite quickly by either beginning or advanced weavers. An advanced weaver could; of course, jazz it up with one's own favorite accent weaving design in the middle- or add dyed reed, etc. It's also available in a complete kit for $15.95. What is a macaq? How much birch bark does it need? I may have some spare if you need it *right* away. I didn't notice anyone at the Sheep & Wool festival selling baskets, I go every year, but then I was looking more for sheepskins and herbs instead. A great place to get various sized backpack baskets is out at Fort Frederick (other side of Hagerstown) in the spring when they have their 18th cent market fair. Hope this is of some help. They are in need of donations for their upcoming fund raising event, which will be held at Astro hall during the yearly dog show, July 20-23. They are looking for baskets to hold raffle items and to be raffled. The money raised is used for the members of the team in order to provide the best handlers for the organization. If anyone is interesting in donating a basket (or baskets), please let me know. The basket should be tagged with your name and information, as it will be noted the baskets are hand woven by the person so named on the tag. Had a wonderful time. Met several new, nice people and got to see old friends. By the time you read this Bert, you will be home also. Now you can't say I am a lurker in WW, at least for the month of June. I hope to contribute something at least once a month. I would like to tell you all how wonderful a person and teacher Betty Kourkounakis is. She helped me learn how to weave a triple braid handle after a class. She also made a great roommate. Thank you also to Jodi Shebester for your help with the Nantucket purse. A big thank you to Eileen LaPorte for your help with the clover twill bowl. I will finish it. I promise. I also would like to thank Carol Matteson for the excellent job she did and all the volunteers who helped to make our convention a success. Congratulations to Carol also for becoming Missouri's new president. Enough for now, let someone else say something. Tired but will begin weaving again tomorrow. Morningstar" To: davidc@iei.net To Tracey from Upstate New York - Marty Holihan has a pattern that she calls "The Intriguing Knot" that sounds like what you're looking for. You can e-mail her at martyhln@juno.com. It's an excellent pattern. I found them very easy to make following her diagrams. I bought a baskets at a Antique/flea Market Sunday and would like to know if anyone can help me date this. It was used to hold Military Shells. Very large ones. We think 105 millimeter, which would be approx. 4 1/2 - 5" in diameter. The basket has two wooden slats on the bottom, woven with willow and two canvas handles on each side. The dimensions are 32" wide X 5" deep X 23 1/2" Tall. It has a wooden piece inside the base with 4 circular cutouts where the base of the shells would go. I'm just curious if anyone has any info., photos, etc. to help me date this. I love to watch old movies and always on the lookout for baskets, but haven't seen anything like this one. It's in excellent shape and only cost me $22.00. Thanks for any information. Ruthanne from Dryden, Michigan where I think summer has decided to take a vacation. Low 60's and rainy. Ruthanne M.S. HELP %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Thank You (Swap #8) Date: Tue, 06 Jun 2000 13:05:29 -0500 From: Melody Palm To: davidc@iei.net I received a delightful Americana Wall Basket from Sue Erb of St. Louis. Sue wove a design by Kathi Heuberger. Alternate rows of narrow weavers in red and natural are topped with three rows of wider Navy. Sue over stained the basket, and although she was concerned that it got too dark, I think it has an "antiqued" look. This is the first wall basket in my collection, which makes it extra special. (This was also my first swap.) Sue included the pattern, so I can try it myself. The basket arrived just after Memorial Day, which was very appropriate for a patriotic sort of basket. Sue had boxed it up well before the swap deadline, and then the box got mixed in with moving boxes. The delay just added to my anticipation. Thanks again Sue. Thanks, too, to Jennifer for coordinating the swap, and to the many WW readers who encourage each other - and especially new weavers - to participate and appreciate the variety of gifts we each have. By now most of you have figured out that my e-mail address is NOT atstukey@digisys.net! I'm not quite sure how that happened... unless these fingers of mine forgot to hit the space bar in between "at" and "stukey." It's hard to get those thumbs working sometimes! I'm proud to say we have some very persistent weavers in our group... because, even with the error in my e-mail address, as of this time we have57 weavers signed up for this swap! It has been so much fun going through the e-mails... some are short, sweet, and to the point, and others are free to share little bits of themselves with me. I have corresponded with some of you before, but I am really enjoying meeting so many new weavers. For those of you who haven't signed up yet... what are you waiting for??? Deadline to sign up is June 16! As I stated in my last e-mail, I will be sending out your partners within a week of the deadline. I think most of us are so eager to get weaving that I'll have the assignments made and you'll be hearing from me by June 17-18. Talk to you'all soon!
