I would miss it terribly if I could not read basket speak, since I have no one to talk baskets with. I also have a question I'm sure someone out there knows. I made a basket this weekend with a Gretchen border (it rained so much we could not go outside to do anything), but I do not know the formula for how long the round reed should be. I had way too much. I know it is the circumstance x something x # of rows. If someone could tell me what the something is ASAP I would really appreciate it. I need to know for a class next week. It arrived with salmon, sour dough starter, gold rush candy bars and even homemade berry jelly. It was done in my favorite colors and will be nice to use in my truck. I was able to visit the Deutshe Korb Museum in Michelau Germany. It had a nice display of baskets made in the area and from around the world. The National Basket festival is the third weekend in Sept in Lichtenfels Germany. I have flyers and information if anyone is interested. It is four hours from Berlin and Frankfurt. It is warm and muggy in South Bend today. Sincerely, Bonnie Hauser Buchanan, MI %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Info for a Weavers Words inquiry. Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 21:04:59 -0700 From: "Tish Kendrick" To: I have been reading Weavers Words with great interest for about a year. This is the first time I have written, and am writing regarding the drilling of shells. Put the shell on a piece of foam rubber cupped side down rather than having it on a hard surface, then use a small bit with a Dremel or other electric drill. A slower speed is better I have found, with a constant slight pressure, and the hole will be made. Some shells are very, very hard so some patience is needed, but persevere and you will get results. Are readers of Weavers Web going to be wearing red ribbons at the Michigan Convention? I will be attending for the first time and would like to meet some fellow WW readers. I am interested in making macaqs (sp?), but cannot seem to find a supplier that will be able to provide any before the end of the summer, and I don't have access to any birch trees. Daniel, you mentioned the triangular awl. I was told to only use a triangular awl with birch bark, as it keeps the holes from splitting. Could you direct me to where I can buy one? I am happy to hear that the swap will be coming to a close soon. I cannot wait for the next one! Thank you David for giving us this forum to share information! How can you tell the difference between reed and black ash? I was at a sheep and wool festival, where a lady was selling baskets that to me looked like reed. She was adamant they were made from black ash. Most were not stained. I can tell the difference between oak and reed, but is there that much of a difference with black ash? For those of you who don't know me, my name is Faye Stukey and I live in Whitefish, Montana. I am hosting Basket Swap #9... and it's time to post the rules and sign-up directions! But... before I get underway, I want to thank Jennifer Mulcare-Sullivan for the EXCELLENT job she did on Swap #8! For a swap that was supposed to be completed by April30, I think she has gone above and beyond the call of duty to wrap things up! THANKS, JENNIFER! On to Basket Swap #9! Once again, this will be a swap in which you send a basket you have woven to one person and receive a basket woven by someone else. Weave a basket you would be pleased to receive. DO NOT contact the person you are weaving for until you hear from that person that your basket has been received. This swap is for Weavers Words subscribers only. You may sign up for this swap one time only. Sign up will be open from now until June 16, 2000. I am not placing a limit on the number of people who can sign up... while I may be creating a ton of work for myself, I don't want anybody (and I mean ANYBODY) to miss out! Within a week of the sign up deadline, I will send you an e-mail with the name, address, and any other information your swap partner shares with me to pass along to you. Your personally woven basket must be sent to your swap partner no later than July 21, 2000 (although earlier is certainly fine!). Anyone who has failed to follow through in a previous Weavers Words swap will not be eligible for participation in this swap unless they are able to provide me with written proof, from the recipient of their basket, that they did satisfactorily complete the earlier swap. I'd like to take a brief moment to share a thought of mine with you. I encourage you, if you have strong likes or dislikes, to share them with me when you sign up for this swap. So many times I have read posts on Weavers Words from weavers who... well, maybe they are offended by antler baskets. Or... maybe they feel strongly that a basket must be a "vessel" as opposed to something wearable (such as a woven hat or woven jewelry). My goal is to make this swap a pleasant experience for all. Another thought... the insertion of "goodies" in your baskets. While I'm sure everybody enjoys the goodies, remember the focus of the swap is on the basket! Okay... one more thought... and perhaps the most important one! I would really, REALLY, like to encourage everybody to participate in this basket swap! I don't want anybody to feel that because they've only been weaving for a short time they aren't "good enough" to participate. We all, no matter how long ago it may have been, wove our first baskets. And for one, I have been thrilled with each basket I have received since first participating in Swap #4. I feel it's an honor to host WW Swap #9! To sign up for Weavers Words Basket Swap #9, send an e-mail message to me atstukey@digisys.net containing the following information: Your name Your mailing address Your telephone number Your e-mail address Optional information may include favorite colors or specific likes or dislikes. I look forward to hearing from all of you! Faye %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: takraw/rattan ball Date: Thu, 01 Jun 2000 07:09:52 EST From: "Scott Green" To: davidc@iei.net Can anyone help me find a pattern for a ball traditionally made from rattan called a takraw ball (or something similar)? I have searched the Internet and all I can find are game rules for Takraw. The ball looks like it is made with round reed. Thanks. Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2000 18:49:50 -0600 From: "Faye Stukey" To: "David Collins" References: 1 Hello Weavers! I know I recently posted information about Basket Swap #9... but I have more good news! I recently received word from Carol Antrim that she is willing to come to our area as an instructor to teach us an antler basket! I am SO excited! Carol does fabulous work and has taught many classes. I'm sure all of you know her work. If not, I would be happy to send you the URL to her website. Anyway... the class I am helping her organize will be in Kalispell, Montana in July. A date certain hasn't been scheduled yet... but we're trying to schedule it around the All 60s Reunion in Whitefish. If there are any weavers out there who would be interested in learning from this excellent instructor, please send me an e-mail and I will be happy to give you more information! She is going to be 30 years old, and is crazy about dogs. The main qualification for the basket is that it is fairly quick to make, since I have to have it finished within a couple of weeks. I have checked out all of the main pattern websites and just haven't found one that catches my eye. If anyone out there has any suggestions or patterns of your own for sale that I could try, I would love to hear from you! If you have any other basket ideas besides totes, that's O.K. too. I'm up for any suggestions. I just figured that most people can use a tote basket, so I'm safe making one of those. Thanks so much! I'm also wondering if anyone knows of a place that sells leather straps and/or handles for baskets, like totes for example. I have a set of Kathy Tessler's straps for one of her totes, but I'm thinking of something like braided straps with a darker colored leather or straps with designs tooled into them. I have not been able to locate such a thing on the basket websites. Thanks for your help! Lisa Carstens in stormy SE WI %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Writing Patterns Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2000 09:44:57 -0400 (EDT) From: Maureen Bartz To: Weavers Words I would like to bring up a topic for discussion. Since I have been receiving WW (about 1 year), I have not seen this topic discussed. Since there are some many patterns available, how do you know for sure, when you develop a pattern that it has not been done before. Obviously, if you work with a unique or new material, or develop a new weave, it would not be a problem. What happens when someone that has a pattern for sale sees someone else come out with a pattern that is basically the same? I am hesitant to publish patterns because of possible duplication problems. What do all the pattern writers out there think? There has been lots of time for weaving in Wisconsin where we had over 8 inches of rain in May.
