In most cases service and quality will hit bottom soon. Furthermore, price slashing can put smaller vendors out of business, and then the variety of wonderful weaving products generated by the small vendors' talent and innovation will just disappear into oblivion. The days when you could run across town to purchase an emergency coil of reed or a handle (thankfully paying the retail price in exchange for the convenience of being so lucky to have the vendor nearby) will be over. Their friendly smile and caring concern for your well being will become nonexistent because their doors will be closed due to competitor price slashing. You'll have to ask yourself, "Could I have helped to prevent this store's closing by worrying less about the difference in price of a few cents and instead remembering to be thankful for and loyal to that store?" You'll remember when that little store gave you open credit so that you could make all those special baskets for a craft show or for Christmas. Now you'll just be staring at your credit card statements. What about the State Conventions and Get-A-Ways all over the country where you go to take classes, learn more about basketry trends, and shop til you drop through all the vendor booths? If the vendors are forced out of the market due to Internet price slashing, what do you think will happen to these events? They will be hurt badly. The vendors are a tremendous support system in these events, and without them many of the events will have to drastically down size if not discontinue altogether. And where have the price slashers been at these events? They have not cared enough to be there and support the art of basketry at the events. They seem to care only about making a buck on volume of Internet sales. Is this really the kind of thing that basket making is all about? Or is it about people? Is it about art and craft? Is it about community? Is it about commitment, friends, sharing, learning, edification, and fun? I think we need to ask ourselves all of these questions and truly consider where we stand. Price crazes come and go. But solidarity and stability in a business that cares about you as a human being of value would be a sad loss if we allow the price slashers to seduce us. Think about it before you click the love of basketry into thin air. Thoughtfully and Sincerely written by Cris Green. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Bamboo Anyone? Date: Thu, 11 May 2000 13:30:50 -0400 From: "William Campbell" To: Hello Everyone: I guess I've been weaving for over thirteen years, but I've never done anything with Bamboo. I've got a backyard full of the stuff. Now, I've visited Web sites and seen professional Japanese Bamboo Baskets, which takes years and years to learn. The price of these baskets start at $1,500 - $6,000. That's not what I want to know. I would like to know if anyone on WW has ever done anything with Bamboo. I know there are several types, and I don't know what the name of mine is, so if that makes a difference you can email me and I'll look it up on the net or something. Love reading WW and appreciate all the information shared. Happy Mother's Day ladies! Also, we would like to invite teachers to submit original patterns for the IBA jury selection process. Visit the web site for a printable jury form and information. Baskets and proposals must arrive by June 10 to be included in the 2001 selections. As soon as the baskets are selected and photographed, work starts on the convention 2001 brochure. David will be adding the complete brochure to the IBA web site sometime in the fall when it becomes available. Please keep checking back. You must be an IBA member by September 1 to be included in the brochure mailing. Membership information is also available on the web site. For your calendars, the 2001 IBA convention will be May 10-13 at the Indianapolis Sheraton north. The keynote speaker/ teacher will be Mary Schlick, author of Columbia River Basketry. We are checking into the possibility of printing convention POSTERS again. As was stated in a previous WW, this is a costly undertaking and may not be feasible - but we are pursuing the possibility. Keep your fingers crossed. You never know how much something costs until you ask. We also do a lot of "in-house" presswork to cut down on the costs. It helps, but as Tony said, it is still a costly proposition to produce full color posters and brochures - but boy don't we all enjoy them! I certainly received a lot of good ideas! I personally like the penny idea the best. (Cover the hole of the base with a penny of the year the basket was made.) A year 2000 penny would be special. I wonder if there are any out yet? Or use one of those shiny new golden dollars! I sure appreciate how helpful all of you fellow basket weavers are and all the hard work you must put in, David, to compile this several times a week. Until next time, Margie in Montana where we had six inches of snow this morning! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: VIRUS WARNING/PROBLEM Date: Thu, 11 May 2000 23:29:33 -0400 From: "Jennifer Mulcare-Sullivan" To: "David Collins" Hi WW Swappers, It appears that my hotmail e-mail account was hit by the kakworm virus (Sent via e-mail.... no attachment needed). Morningstar" To: davidc@iei.net Hi WW's To Karen Traub - I was going to e-mail you privately about the Dandelion Jelly, but then thought I should probably answer you for everyone else to read too. I've only had one batch of this jelly come out rather thin. Are you sure you used 2 2/3 cups of liquid, 4 1/2 cups of sugar, 1 tsp of lemon extract? Did you boil it, bring it to a hard boil, for three (3) minutes? Was your Sure-jell good? There is an expiration date on the boxes. Other than that, I don't think I can explain what happened. I had another response that their jelly turned out rather thin too. But, everyone else who's made it, has had success. I can't explain. Maybe I should send you some of my Dandelions? If you have other questions, please contact me. Take care Ruthanne M.S. It says that it can be used on wood and wicker. Has anyone used this? What was your experience? I'll look forward to your replies! Thank you David, for all you do for basket weavers worldwide, I am grateful, as I am sure everyone is. I do hope you health is good, and that you are very happy. I also hope, you will keep us together for many more years. We are all, so lucky to have you do this for us. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, we love you David. Hi to Norma. I just wanted everyone to know that we did the Monkey Business Twill basket at Thumbweavers Guild Thursday, and for those who think twills are hard, and are stiring clear because it is a twill, don't, this one isn't hard at all, it is a real easy twill to do, the pattern is written well and we all had fun. I hope you will order the pattern and make the basket, it is so great, our baskets are all pretty we did the basket, in about all the colors you can think of and they were all pretty. One of our members even did it in 3/8" and I think, I will do another in a larger size as the designed Monkey really stood out in the larger reed. I wish you all peace in your mind, love in your heart, and health for good measure. Oh, have some fun go weave a basket and relax. Choate Basketry List - http://www.jchoatebasketry.com There are a few tell tale signs that summer is soon to pop out onto the scene in Alaska. You'll notice that I did not say "spring" as spring is only a quick meltdown to the explosion of summer. Only a few piles of snow remain, the dogs begin to hair out, the tourists arrive, and usually the onslaught of hoards of mosquitoes makes for a slapping good time. For some mystical reason they have miraculously vanished. A good traveling omen I'm sure... We head out on the road soon loaded with dog "tails" to share and basketry skills to educate and entertain you as well. Tales from the trail are postponed until the white stuff comes our way again. Expect more stories of life in Alaska when we return home this fall. Until we meet on the summer trail... Our guild all bought the patterns from a member of the AOL board who belongs to our guild. We made the basket on Thursday. What a fun little basket to make for a guild project. We all had more fun making that basket than we have had in a long time making a basket and the great part was all except one of us were actually making the guild project. Nobody could see their own monkey. We held those baskets up so many time and everyone else would say there he is, we see him. We had the janitor in the school take our picture with our baskets as done as they were at the end of the guild meeting and when it is developed I'll send David a picture. I highly recommend any guild looking for a fun project to make this basket. Once again I say a job well done by Laura Lee for writing a wonderful little pattern in tribute of Peggy Koch.
