I thought, "I can do that!" I devised my own pattern, and have even taught it to several people. I use 5/8" spokes, 10 of them cut about 24" long. Weave them to form a square base about 5 1/2" square (I keep an empty box nearby to check my size). Upsett the spokes and start weaving. I usually start w/ at least 3 rows of 3/8", and then use various accents--an ash stencil strip (near the top), seagrass, and twining w/ round reed. I finish the rim w/ 5/8" flat reed inside and out w/ a seagrass rim filler. The flat reed works better, because you can bend it and square off the corners. The basket is about 6" tall (I don't have my pattern right beside me), but I keep sticking the tissue box in the basket to check for the right height, and to make sure my sides are going straight up. Everyone I've given it to loves it, and a few people have used them to set plants in. I usually cut several sets of 10spokes so I'll have them ready to go if I need a quick gift. If I'm not hassled, I can usually finish one in about 2 hours. This is a good first basket to teach, too. I'm sure there are other patterns out there, and I have seen finished ones w/ wooden tops w/ a hole for the tissue. Hope this helps! Melissa in windy, drifty Riner, VA, where we've missed 3 school days and I'm ready to get back in school! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Kool-Aid Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2000 21:44:00 -0800 From: "M. L. Ames" To: CC: Hi, I saw your query on WW. You CAN dye reed with Kool-Aid, with some very distinct advantages and disadvantages. Advantages: it is cheap, it is non-toxic, kids can do it with supervision, it is quick. Disadvantages: the color palette is quite limited - a lot of pinks - mostly pastel shades, most "flavors" are not terribly light-fast. I usually recommend it only for projects with children, as it is not really very practical except for small quantity dyeing. Put newspaper or opened brown grocery bags on the counter between sink and microwave. Have a place set up for the dyed reed to sit once done (more paper on floor, or plastic tub.) Use unsweetened Kool-Aid, use 1/3 to 1/2 as much water as if you were drinking it. (Experiment, different flavors are different.) Use a plastic bowl, big enough to hold a few strands of reed wound into circles, but small enough to fit in the microwave. You don't want to make up quarts of liquid, so test the bowl size, reed circle size with water before you start. Makeup only as much 'dye' as you need to cover the reed in the bowl. Wet the reed first. Put reed into bowl of Kool-Aid and place in microwave for 2minutes on high. Take it out and test for color. Beware of the heat of the liquid, the bowl and the reed! That is why adult supervision is necessary with children. Heat longer if necessary. If color still too light, strengthen the solution with more Kool-Aid powder. Rinse under cold water. A bowlful will dye several small batches of reed. Discard used Kool-Aid. Do not reuse bowl for foodstuffs (reed may contain insecticide or fungicide). In this way your kids can experience more of the basketry process, and you don't have a huge mess in the kitchen, no toxic fumes or spillage, easy cleanup. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weavers Words Request Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 07:08:38 -0500 From: "Bren Miller" To: Hi David, I sure appreciate your dedication to keeping us all happy and busy with swapreports and the usual newsletter chatter. What would we do without you! Do any of you folks know where I might find the following out-of-print book at a more reasonable price? I would gratefully settle for a used book if anyone has one they would be interested in selling. Amazon was able to locate the book but the cost is $67.98, which is more than I spend on books. It is Lyn Siler's twill market basket pattern with a driftwood stain--very pretty. Swaps are a great way to get to know each other. Also, there is a basket on its way to Tennessee. It has been woven for a while but I was waiting for a warm day to stain it outdoors. It was mailed on the deadline (of course) still smelling a bit--sorry! Well, in the east the snow seems to have let up - I hope the UPS man can get through! I sent off my swap basket yesterday. As it was my first swap I'd like to thank D. Gatz for all her support when I wasn't sure I would do well enough as a novice to enter a swap. Thank you! I actually had made a different basket for the swap but when it was done I wasn't really pleased with it and sent a basket I had woven shortly before I entered the swap. Now to tackle the basket that I don't care for - part of me says let it be but then part of me wants to make it right! My problem is I weave too tight and my sides have a tendency to curve inward on me. If I do a basket at one sitting this doesn't seem to happen as much however, I guess my mood is the same and I can concentrate on the weaving better in one session. Anyway, I hope my swap partner is pleased with my basket - I didn't take any pictures to post - sorry! Be well and stay warm. Yesterday was a very good day. My swap basket was mailed and my daughter received word she was accepted to the University of Central Florida. Only one more college to hear from and she can start making choices as to where to go!!! Marty. I apologize for asking for a repeat of something you have already written but I seem to have lost the info regarding rit dye remover. I noticed that you said to use the dye remover before dying the reed color to make it brighter but I can't seem to find the instructions about how you do the entire process. If you would be so kind as to repeat the answer I would appreciate it. I promise to print it out and save it this time!!! Lois and I have painting class tonight. We have a dilemma. We are painting a brush box but neither of us is crazy about the pattern we are to use. Our teacher is great but we are not into cutesy angels. We are more primitive, folk artsy type. So do we go to class and do the project as offered or do we ask the teacher if it is ok to use a pattern of our own? I thought at first that would be ok but wouldn't it be like going to basket class and having a student say, I don't like that basket so I am going to sit here and weave something else! If I were the teacher I am not sure I would appreciate that. We will probably go and do the teachers project but I think that brings up a good point. What would you do if you liked the project but not the pattern? I would say, go do the teachers project, then do another one on your own. Ha, ha, I think I answered my own question!!!!! What do you all think? I hope whoever receives my swap basket likes it! I filled it full of treats. Someone somewhere will have it in a day or two by US Postal Service. The weather here in Havelock, North Carolina is still crazy. It has snowed twice here in the last two weeks and it has been pretty cold, too. It's hard to understand why we are having such weird weather. A big thank you for Pam White from Windsor, Maine who sent me a beautiful Heart Shape Basket she found in a book by Sherri Lawall (1984). Pam also included a basket full of heart shape candies. When I submitted my name for the swap I said I love hearts so Pam made a heart basket for me. Pam again thank you very much!!!!!! Might as well take advantage of this e-mail and ask a question about Retayne. When is the Retayne added to help the color in the reed from running unto the other reed when weaving a basket. Is it added to the dye bucket or to the rinse bucket? I think I did add it to the right bucket. Hope every one that received a swap basket is enjoying their basket, I know I am. I enjoy reading the WW's and I can't believe that I'm behind in my reading. I've been busy and than very tired to read my e-mail. I'll catch up as soon as I can. David thank you so much for taking the time to do this for us. I did fill out the questionnaire at Asimba Advantage so you could receive the jackets but from what I read not too many others did, that's too bad. Everyone take care and thanks for your e-mail. Date: Thu, 03 Feb 2000 11:00:50 -0600 From: Elizabeth Bechtel To: David Collins I did it! I just sent out my first swap basket! Someone in the Land of Lincoln can keep their eyes open for something from the Dairy State! It should arrive by Thursday or Friday. I am so happy to have gotten it all boxed up and sent out....and as an added bonus, the place where I ship out UPS packages sends every 11th package for free. And guess who just sent her *free* 11th package? Sometimes everything comes together. I have been using a drawknife with a John McGuire Shave horse for tapering rims in the last couple of months. I just love how well the rims turn out! My question is: should I be sharpening or caring for my drawknife in a particular way? I don't want it to wear down if I can take care of it now. Any advice? First of all, THANK YOU to Adie Moore of Florida for a wonderful "box-ful" of goodies for the swap. In addition to a beautiful pie basket and a mini egg basket of waxed linen, she included some natural items from FLA, copies of her guild's newsletter (terrific!) and a really neat 2000 calendar from her guild with member's baskets each month. It was a wonder-FULL box. Thanks so much, Adie! In my local Bowling Green, Ohio newspaper today there was a half-page AP story about Edith Edwards of Rutherfordton, NC. aka "Kudzu Queen". The picture showed her in a woven kudzu hat, with kudzu baskets and kudzu soap. Is this "our" kudzu lady? I will keep the article, if she wants a copy. Choate Basketry List - http://www.corecom.net/~choatepp That's what it says on one of those electrical billboards in Wasilla, "WHOANGERED THE SNOW GOD?". My husband Lee said he is going to steal some letters and write "JILL!" in response. If you thought you were uncomfortable on the east coast it's a trifle compared to what Mother Nature has had in store for us. In Alaska the old gal rules and your best off to pay attention when she decides to show you what she can do. Currently she's giving us her best shot. Winds at 120 miles per hour in Anchorage; gusts so severe that parked cars are being slid into one another. Avalanches closing roads all over the state and white out conditions so bad that roads are being closed all together. Mix in a little freezing rain for awhile and top with (you guessed it) more snow. A good time to sit home, weave baskets and wait until the old girl is done with her vengeance. News from Anchorage is that the video is done but now all I have to do is figure a way in, to get them. We plan to make the pilgrimage to town on Monday (whether permitting) so you can plan on receiving your copy in about a week. If your interested in grabbing the first edition of "Alaska Bush Basketry- Antler Wall Pocket" let me know and I'll break trail for you to get one. Until the old girl settles down..... The colors are natural, pink, and blue. She left it natural for me in case I wanted to use it for food items. It is really beautiful. While I've been weaving for over four years, I still consider myself a beginner and haven't tried anything quite so challenging yet. I feel really lucky to have been given this piece. I hope my swap partner (who should be receiving her basket very soon!) likes the pattern I have chosen. It seems so simple compared to what I received. Yes, you can dye with Kool-Aid. I have done this on numerous occasions. This lesson was learned many years ago, when my children spilled their Kool-Aid on my white countertop. I got the idea from that, and have dyed a lot of reed with it. However, it makes a light pastel color, not a deep color. I used to put the reed in a quart mason jar, a few weavers at a time in the Kool-Aid water. Jell-O makes a nice dye for my herbal soaps. I suppose it would work for reed too. Hope this helps out.
