Back in Vol. 3 - Iss 91 Kathy Paul was asking about bleaching reed to get a brighter color, Kathy if you use the Rit color remover on your reed and simmer before, you dye the reed it will give you a much brighter color. It seems I needed to answer something else but could not find the post, I will keep looking if I find that I should have answered someone's question maybe I will get around to it sooner or later. In Mississippi (my home) they had 4 or 5 inches of snow can you believe it? We are having a heat wave here in Michigan, at night in the teens for low, and in the high 20's for daytime high. It's a large egg basket woven wider than it is long and accented with sea grass. I love egg baskets and this one is such an unusual shape. She also included a cloth liner and 2 hand knit potholders. It is such a nice gift. Second - I finished my swap basket just in time to catch the ice storm and not get it mailed out on Friday. The ice is gone and the box is taped & ready to go out tomorrow so someone in Arizona should know that it's on the way. I can't believe that our convention is only a few days away. I have classes with Judy Briscoe, Mary Hettmansberger & Cass Scorch. I can hardly wait. Then at NCBA I get to take classes from Judith Olney & Jill Choate. If I was someone else, I'd be jealous of me. BTW - Angie got a scholarship that covers almost half of her 4 years of college. What a terrific kid. Here goes you put the color remover in a dye pot and bring it to a boil put the reed in and let it simmer for maybe 5 to 10 min. then take it out and rinse well then put it in the color of your choice, the colors are much brighter. I must have been tired last night when I wrote in, so forgive me. Oh have some fun go weave a basket. I send you love. She wove a beautiful basket from a pattern called 'A Cherokee Basket - Chief's Heart and Chain" in natural and smoked flat and flat oval, with a gorgeous twill bottom! I'm still moving it from room to room, trying to decide on a home for it; I think it will end up in my office; outside of the bedroom, it's where I spend the most time! Kathleen, the peanut brittle you added in is delicious [and nearly 1/2 gone!]. She also sent a gourd that she dyed red with shoe dye - very pretty, and my favorite color [how did you know?] It's whole, and I can't decide whether to leave it whole, or cut it and add sweet grass or pine needles to it.....Kathleen, I hope you had fun at the Atlanta convention. Oh well, I need to finish my own swap basket and send it off. It's nearly done, just need to rim and stain, before sending it off to somewhere east of here, where the weather is cold and white [I think]. This has been fun, I'll definitely do it again. Twelve inches of snow and ice for a week is more than my southern heart can stand. I love reading the sled dogs stories--but that's as close as I want to get to snow for a while. Anyway-my first trip out was to the liquor store---no, really---it was to get a BOX at the liquor store for my swap basket. It has been finished for a while, but I couldn't get out to get it mailed. Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 20:35:31 -0700 From: "Faye Stukey" To: "David Collins" References: 1 David, You are absolutely wonderful! I really hope you know how much we appreciate all your hard work... I have learned so much from your readers... and from the Basket Swaps that are coordinated through Weaver's Words! I just received the most awesome basket from Sharle Osborne of Sequim, Washington! The basket is a ribbed wall basket... but the most awesome part about it is that it is woven with all gathered materials... cottonwood root, cedar root, cattail, cedar bark, yellow cedar, cattail cordage, bulrush, and northwest sweet grass. I'm sure I'm leaving something out. I can't begin to tell you how beautiful it is! Along with the basket Sharle sent a box full of naturals for me to play with! I recall a while back... when the natural's list was coordinating their first swap... and I didn't participate because I knew (like so many of the readers who hesitate to enter Weaver's Words Swaps) I didn't have the knowledge to use the materials I had gathered and make a basket that would be "good enough." Anyway... after the naturals swap... when they began posting their photographs on the Internet... I saw the basket that Sharle had woven... and was amazed that she used dandelions in it! I remember writing to the natural's list and asking about it... and Sharle wrote back and shared with the readers how to prepare the dandelions for weaving. Ever since. I've been a huge fan of hers! And to now have a basket in my possession that she made. I feel so very fortunate! Sharle... I know I've already thanked you... but thank you again! And David, thank you, too, for giving us this forum to share and learn and experience new and exciting things! To Cass: loved the song...how clever! On Friday, the 28th I put my basket in the mail to the Midwest to my swap partner. It was filled with love and a little pride....pride because I usually don't weave much in the cold months due to arthritis, and I was determined to do it for the swap! The arthritis seems to be more in my hips and legs this year so weaving wasn't painful. The swaps sure are fun. AND...the very next day a package arrived from Amy Mae Smith in Bowling Green, Ohio. Boy did I luck out..not only was there a beautiful wall basket in round reed.....cone shaped with a sea shell embellishment and purple reed (one of my favorite colors!)but, she also enclosed a delicate, wispy necklace from grapevine she collected near her home! It's too pretty to put in a drawer when I'm not wearing it, so I'm going to hang it up on display! I've already thanked Amy Mae but wanted to share my happiness with all of you. Happy weaving from Jayna in central Mass., where it's cold and we have snow on the ground. But...just another month to go and we can begin to see spring around the corner. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket Swap Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2000 10:23:33 -0500 From: "Ingrid" To: "David Collins" References: 1 Hallelujah! At long last my swap basket is finished and going out today via brown truck. Someone in the upper mid-west should get a pkg. next week depending on the weather. I don't know if I'm jinxed or what. Floyd hit during the last swap and drowned and mildewed my reed and this time I tore my left rotator cuff muscle in Dec. so weaving has really been a pain. I'm going to the orthopedist today to see what can be done. NCBA is coming soon, sure would hate to have to sit that one out because I have some really good classes. Due to the weather here in the sunny south and iffy mail delivery I will continue to take orders for T-shirts, Sweatshirts and Apron thru this week. The deadline was today but for those of you who have procrastinated you can still order! To my swap partner, your basket was woven with great "pain" and love. It was a challenge to me because it's a pattern I have wanted to try for a longtime so I do hope you will be pleased with it. Parts of it were taken out and reworked many times. I'm learning but am still a novice. The sun in shining today and the snow and ice are melting rapidly. Yeh! Ingrid q. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: DYEING WITH KOOLAID? Have been trying to get together with a friend of mine for an afternoon of weaving and we both would like to tackle a Nantucket basket. We have made inquiries regarding classes - facilities around us are very limited- we're in the Chicago, IL area. We have been put on a waiting list for some upcoming classes but are still anxious to do something in the meantime and muddle through it together. Then we can attend a class together and really ask our questions there! Well, we're looking foursome Nantucket kits - molds to rent - etc. This has always been one of my favorite baskets but the resources here are very limited. I did speak with Mindy Lower regarding her beautiful site, which I found in your last issue: mlower@mail1.aeroinc.net As usual she was very friendly and helpful. She did tell me about the classes we're waiting for but we would like to get on with it! You know how it is once you get the bug! Mindy's work is very impressive - she's currently making some bridesmaids baskets. If any of you would like to see some beautiful pieces I highly recommend visiting this site. Thank you fellow weavers - we look forward to your help - feel free toe-mail me directly at dczerwionka@loy.org. I just put up an exhibit at the Greenville Spartanburg airport. They have a small gallery across from the gift shop. The Upstate Visual Arts asked me to exhibit some of my baskets with a watercolor artist in the gallery. She has the walls and I have a wonderful glass case. I was able to exhibit 17 baskets. I had some split oak ones, a large Nantucket, a whale's tooth Nantucket purse, some natural baskets using driftwood handles, and several gourd baskets. I felt very honored to be asked to do this. I have been experimenting a lot with gourds lately and really love it. I drill holes on top and insert round reed. I weave with pine bark and colored round reed on top. On some of the gourds I cut out an opening in the side, warp a loom with waxed linen thread, and weave a tapestry design. I usually add a philodendron sheath to the top and lash on with waxed linen thread. Well, enough of that. Just want to let everyone know that the Upper SC Basketmakers' Guild will be having their seminar in June. The brochures are printed and will be out soon. Email me if you would like to receive one. I will be teaching a gourd weaving class and we have many other very talented weavers offering their baskets. Thank you so much Bev Uebel for the darling basket. Don't ever apologize for being a beginner. I have a country house and burgundy is one of my main colors. You did a wonderful job on the basket. How did you know that I love Ghirardelli? Wow, I got coffee, chocolates, and cocoa! Thanks. I do not know your email, so I will send you a thank you snail mail. I hope to see a lot of you in Raleigh at NCBA convention. Jill, I tried to get an antler basket class but didn't. I was disappointed but look forward to meeting you. I only write once in a while, so had to catch up. Bye from icy South Carolina weekends.
