Maybe I did it wrong or maybe it's my water but it didn't make the dye steadfast. I added 1 capful to my pot and it separated. My dye looked terrible and I wasn't pleased with the color. It seemed as though it lightened it. Among the many things of interest in Germany ... this is one thing that can be done anywhere, anytime ... try a Volksmarch! They are all over Germany, all year round. Always on Saturdays and often on Weds. These are 10K or 20K walks thru the beautiful forests, or vineyards, along streams, in the country. There are 2 to 3 control points to rest at along the way with brotchen and drink. Not only is it an easy way of exercise, but you can enjoy the beauty of the country, and watch the German folks in their attire along the way. I do have one that I got at A.C. Moore, which is a big craft store but I know you can get it at smallers stores also. But the pattern is counted cross-stitch and the pattern is called Basket Collection by Dimensions. It comes out very nice. I first made one for my very special basket instructor Kate Conroy when she retired from her full time job of teaching. If the pattern is to much for some people who can do parts of it if you wish. I do that now and Kate has them in her studio now. It's a lot of work to make the big one but it's worth it in the end. I hope this helps people. It came at the perfect time - a fellow teacher died this week and things at school have been better. The basket is a square bagel basket with a solid bottom and ball feet. It sounds like the one Juanita received. I love it. I don't have a basket for muffins or bagels and this one has the colors that match my dining room. Cindy, you say you're a beginner but your work doesn't look like it. She included goodies, recipes and an angle pin that she made. What a welcome and wonderful surprise. Sorry I haven't written in a while, I have been busy with my new job. I got a promotion and am now the Bookmobile Librarian/Manager for Lycoming County. It is full time, which I've never done before, and now our house looks like a bunch of monkeys live in it. But, I've met another basket weaver on the route, and we will have a lot to talk about. Sandy, before I started the job, I was working on a wonderful cross-stitch piece called Basket Collection by Designs with Scissors from Dimension. I bought it at Jo Ann's Fabrics. If you can't find it, I can buy it here and mail it to you. Maybe I can finish mine after I retire 20 years from now. Don't laugh, I started on The Last Supper when our son was born, and he'll be driving this summer, and I only have three Disciples done! You may be able to get to them if you still use the same mail program as when you saved them. Go into your mail and look in your folders. If you find them see if you can open them and then save them to text. But, the easiest way to recover your old issues of WW might be to go to the website and download them as text files from the archives. Thanks for posting the copyright information & web sites. Peggy - Thanks for the publisher's info on the weed book & congratulations on retirement! Billie - I don't have trouble following your posts. One of the nicest basket cross-stitch patterns is Dimensions "Basket Collection" which is design #238. I think you can get it or order it from any cross-stitch shop. On 14 count fabric the stitched area ends up a 13" x10" picture that has approximately 25 baskets (both rib and splint) and two signs: one says "Baskets" and the other says "Hands to Work...Hearts to God". I've been working on (actually "thinking" about working on) mine for a couple of years. All that's left is the outlining, but a friend finished hers (years ago!!) and it's really wonderful. Other ones that I have are 1. "Baskets & Quilts" by Patricia Gaskin Designs (#19) which has rib baskets & a tobacco basket & cheese baskets and some quilt designs. 2. "Baskets" by Oberlin Samplers (phone # 440-774-3273 in Oberlin, OH) which is a sign that spells out Baskets with 10 different baskets sitting on/or under the letters & various kinds of baskets spelled out surrounding the word Baskets (like "gathering basket, bread basket, pie basket, etc.). 3. "The Basket Sampler" by Rams gate Limited which is a sampler with 3 flower baskets above and 1 flower basket below the letters and numbers. I haven't attempted any of these but digging them out sparks my interest....although I don't think I'll ever do the third one because it really doesn't highlight baskets. But first I must finished the poor, neglected "Basket Collection" before the fabric rots. Anyway, hope this helps. Am looking forward to heading to Atlanta on Friday for the Greater Atlanta Guild basket convention. Am excited about my classes - an Egg Basket with the Gregory's and the 3 Stick Basket with Mary Hettsmansperger. Their convention booklet was a wonderful offering of baskets and teachers - pretty impressive for what I believe is just their 2nd year. Can't wait to go! Then next month is NCBA in Raleigh...........I'm fortunate that they're both within driving distance. Van Duyn sheri@justpatterns.com www.justpatterns.com Hi and Winter Weaving Wishes! David-Thank you for all your time and efforts; you are very busy as everyone is writing about their Basket "Swaps". It is so rewarding hearing how excited everyone is receiving their Woven "Love" Gifts! Cass-Thank you for your great song-"Let me Weave" and sharing your sentiments! I can't wait to sing this to my Guilds in February. Thanks for giving me permission, I've looked forward to our chats; getting to know a new basket friend is always such fun! Carolyn-I wrote you directly and then thought I should share with everyone. You were having problems with your dye bath. When you add your reed to the dye bath, please make sure that you have first rinsed your coil of reed in hot water. When reed is shipped overseas, it is sprayed with liver of sulfur, which is a drying agent, so the reed will not mold in the bottom of the ship's cargo (which is damp and a good breeding ground for mold). Sometimes when you are working with reed, it might feel slimy and this is the reason why. Reed will not accept the dye properly if this is still on it. Also, this is a good reason not to put reed in your mouth or give it to your pets to play with! If your dye water does get foamy, please stir as sometimes dye sediments will sink to the bottom of the pot. Removing your kettle from the burner will also work. Dye will not get "old" if stored properly. I have been given dye that was years old and have not had any problems with it. If you do have problems with your dyeing techniques, rinse out your reed and re-dye it again! Being Dutch, I hate to throw anything out, so will always try and remedy the mistake! The next Issue of Just Patterns is at the Printers and in the final stages. If you are a subscriber, the Magazine will go out in the mail the first week of February. Please be patient as Just Patterns is bulk mailed which does take a little longer. I have been busy while enjoying my new venture and now each Issue will feature 5 Patterns for you to weave! While waiting for your Magazine to arrive, please go to my Website www.justpatterns.com and request the Free Online Sample. (Please make sure to fill in your Email Address!) You need only ask for this once as the Sample remains the same and is accessed by your Computer; I am not sending you anything by snail mail. If you would like more free patterns, go to the Weaver's Page where there are now 17 patterns for you to weave. Feel free to print them out for your own personal use! Each time the Magazine is printed, 1 or 2 patterns are added; so visit often! Happy Weaving!! Sheri L. Date: 30 Jan 2000 05:17:56 -0000 From: "J. Choate Basketry List" To: List Member J. Choate Basketry List - http://www.corecom.net/~choatepp Odie is my favorite dog. He is my first choice in lead, my favorite canine pal of the pack, my sounding board, my team stabilizer and he can also be a gigantic pain in the kiester when he wants to be. I haven't been running the dogs much because the snow has been relentless. It is hot (20 and 30 above) and the trail is punchy. Try running in a fur coat in sand and you get an idea what it's like out there for the dogs. Huskies are smart animals and they will always take the path of least resistance. Especially if the trail is particularly difficult, the day is hot and getting a breather sounds like a good idea. My friend Odie is especially brilliant. Today he appraised the current trail conditions and found it more conducive to hit the pavement and take the team with him down the middle of the Spur Road into Talkeetna. Luckily after dragging me down the highway in a prone position and dodging on-coming traffic he exited up a driveway to take five and visit some friends. I always look at runs like this as good writing material....... Don't miss your chance to ride in the basket in 2001 at the "Alaskan Bush Basketry Retreat". I promise to keep Odie in check. Wow, did that work slick. No more fighting the cane around those sharp curves. But this also made me realize how valuable this list has become to me. You all helped me find a place to buy those tiny brass pins after I had made trips to every hardware store in a 50-mile area and couldn't find them. You helped me find an unusual size slot-cutter after we had made more trips to hardware stores and talked to woodworkers and shop teachers who said we would not find one unless it was a special order. Plus then there are all those helpful hints such as the crimping tip. So I just wanted to say thank you to all of you who take the time to help and most of all to you, David, who takes the time to keep this list running. It is a very valuable tool for those of us who make baskets. It is the Liberty Basket by Uli Pia. The shape, quality of work, unique detailing --filled bottom, twisted-wrapped handle (Juanita's touch), finished rim (I don't know how to describe but it consists of eight rows of twisted, round reed) -- are techniques that I have not experienced yet. Seeing such work certainly inspires me to want to work harder and to become a better weaver. Juanita finished the basket with Weaver's Stain in driftwood. And as if this basket wasn't enough, she also included a box of candy, post-it notes with a basket pattern, and a basket-shaped wood pin that proclaims me a basketweaver! I almost was afraid to mail my basket, that is very "beginner" in comparison to the one I received. I hope my recipient will be understanding, and though you won't benefit from this promise, I do promise to try to do better work in the future and pay more attention to detail! Thanks to everyone who wrote in to encourage us beginners to take part in the swap. It let me take courage and enroll, and I am so glad I did. David, Thanks for all your work in supporting our "habit". It's ended up on the end table right next to where I sit. I love it! She enclosed a potholder and a dish cloth that she crocheted herself--really pretty.
