Lisa Carstens - Hope you've got the computer problems solved by now. Carolyn - Many thanks for clarifying the definitions of membership types for the AMB! I seem to be about to make the transition from hobbyist to cottage type. LeAnn Simonson - Thanks for posting the Folkart & Craft Exchange newsletter site. From: Dianne Gleixner Dianne, in SE Wisconsin - Good to see you posting. I agree with you about the convention catalogs being worth the membership fees for joining guilds. They are So Inspiring! They can also give you a feel for whose classes you'd like to take. Sometimes the instructors teach in other venues than big conventions. Watch for mentions of some of the smaller workshops and weaving weekends. Dolores Gatz - It looks like your swap is the biggest ever on WW! I can hardly wait! Thanks again for doing this. Poly is less expensive, but slower drying. "Deft" is a little pricey, fast drying, and has a lacquer odor (Use w/ plenty of ventilation). I prefer satin or semi-gloss rather than gloss. The inside of the body of the basket only receives 1 coat. The rest of the basket, including inside of base, should receive 3 coats; more if you like. The inside and outside of the base should be lightly sanded between coats. After final coat is applied I like to buff the base with 0000 steel wool. This gives a nice hand rubbed appearance. Give yourself plenty of drying time when doing the inner and outer sides of basket. It's usual to have thick coating on the weavers and you want it to completely dry. DO NOT COAT INNER AND OUTER SIDES OF BASKET AT SAME TIME ... it will be tough drying. If you are engraving your name on bottom of basket base, I recommend you have 1 or 2 coats of finish applied first. This makes it easier to be neat if using an electric engraver. You will want to apply a finish coat on top of engraving. For engraving I use my Craftsman engraver that I use for engraving my name on wrenches etc. "Deft" and 0000 steel wool is available in any good hardware store. Impress the guy in the hardware store by asking for "four ought" steel wool instead of zero, zero etc. Joe Conroy Stony Lane Basketry Exeter, RI 02822 %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: egg basket pattern Date: Sun, 9 Jan 2000 10:17:15 -0600 From: "Kay Kibbel" To: Hi Everybody, I am going to be teaching a beginner basket weaving class in February and I am trying to locate a beginner level egg basket pattern. I was living in the Florida Panhandle, which was where I learned to weave baskets from Linda Scoggins (Hi, Linda). We've since moved to San Antonio, TX where I can't find a weaving store, guild or classes. I'm getting lonely and desperate for some inspiration! Are there any conventions or guilds near Texas? Michigan and Indiana aren't exactly close :). I am going to take a willow class from one of my guild members and need to find some willow tools. She showed us an awl that was really huge (about 3/8" in diameter where it was connected to the handle) and a rapping iron. She didn't have a source for the tools as she had bought them from her instructor years ago. Does anyone know where I could order these tools? Thanks, Jane Milner, in cooler California, but the storms are all heading north! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Baby Cradle Date: Sun, 9 Jan 2000 14:08:58 -0600 From: "Barbara Byrne" To: "David C (Weavers Words)" Hi all, Well it's been a long time in coming, but the baby cradle I started last July was completed the weekend before Thanksgiving and now is holding our first granddaughter! Afton Grace was born at 11:22am on December 31 (and no - my daughter who had been in labor since 6pm on the 29th was not willing to hold out for 13 more hours to have the first baby of the new millennium :-)). Afton weighed in at 7lbs 2oz and was 20 inches long. I was fortunate to be present for the labor and delivery - what an awesome experience! I have sent a couple of pictures of the cradle to David to put on the web site, so I hope you will go out and take a look. Thanks to all of you who encouraged me along the way - especially during my frustrations with the braiding! Hope to get to meet some of you at one of the basket weekends I'll be sponsoring this spring and fall. I'll post an announcement when the brochures are ready for mailing - hopefully by the end of this month. Happy New Year! Date: Sun, 09 Jan 2000 21:20:22 -0600 From: Tony Stubblefield or Dean Meredith To: David Collins/Weavers Words Hey were the snow this year? The weather here in the Midwest has been beautiful, for Spring or Fall that is. We haven't had but a trace of snow this year and I have actually gone out in shirtsleeves many a day. Oh well, it must be one of those Y2K things ;-P Kay - about tatting baskets - I don't have a pattern for one, but I usually think of a tatting basket, especially Shaker tatting basket, as being relatively small, maybe 8"x12" with a low handle that runs the long way of the basket. If you are making it out of reed I would use fairly narrow splint for the base, like 3/8" or 1/2" and 3/16" or 11/63"for the weavers. I have also seen side handles used on tatting baskets. Lynne - about Nantucket finishes - as with everything in basketry everybody has their own favorites and technique. I personally like to us Deft Semi-Gloss Clear Wood Finish. It is very fast drying and doesn't require sanding between coats so you can get multiple coats on in an evening. I usually put at least 3 on the outside of the basket and 2 on the inside. I then go over the basket with very fine steel wool to knock of the gloss of the spray and then finish up with a buffing of Johnson's Paste Wax. I think this gives a really nice deep luster too the basket. I personally don't like a high shine and I think this technique gives a nice rich luster to the basket. I usually attach the handle after the finishing process if I am using any bone knobs. If you have already have these on the basket just use masking tape to cover them from the spray. Oh, be sure that all of the wood parts are sanding nicely (always sand with the grain of the wood) before you apply the finish. After the rush of the holidays I haven't been in the mood to weave. I am just enjoying getting to sit down and do nothing for awhile. I am sure I will get the bug again soon. Take care and happy weaving, Tony Stubblefield St. Louis http://www.tetranet.net/users/deanandtony/baskets.htm %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: Pie Basket Pattern Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2000 02:07:17 EST From: BasketsbySharon@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Happy 2000 Everyone! Have hardly had time to read all the wonderful Weaver's Words, let alone make any comments, but did want to address Valerie Miller's request for a pie basket with wooden shelf pattern. I have three pie basket patterns - one is featured on the Holiday Page of my Web Site. It is the first basket pictured with fall ribbon (pattern includes ribbon). My Web Site is: http://www.galfridays.com/basketsbysharon.html. If the fall theme isn't your thing, I have another pattern with American ribbon and colored #2 round loops (ribbon included in pattern) and another that doesn't have ribbon in it, but a decorative center weave (X'd with chair caning). The second two are not on my site, but I could e-mail you a picture if you are interested. Basketsbysharon@aol.com Each of the three patterns has the dimensions and directions for making the wooden shelf (thanks to my hardworking husband)!. Since I have you "on the line" Basketpatterns.com will be updating their site in the next week and I have two new patterns being added - a small and medium shelf with basket drawers. Look for Author Sharon Klusmann. Arnies was nice enough to build the shelves for me, so the patterns and shelf will both be available. They will also be added to my web site shortly. Does anyone have any information about a weaving material called colombain? I was emailed a photo of a basket to identify, and the only information given was the material was called colombain. The basket is a 12" diameter coiled tray, similar to a Hopi Second Mesa (I think) basket, with geometric designs, no animals. Any information would be appreciated. Choate Basketry List - http://www.corecom.net/~choatepp Well, no moose are charging my sled, the weather is mild and we've had some light dustings of snow to soften the trail. The last couple outings with the dogs have been sublime. No hurries, no worries, just dogs and snow and sled. Pretty peaceful stuff and also not a lot of action packed material to write about. So, for those of you who were worried that I might have a death wish, now you know the rest of the story. Most of my trips out with the dogs are pretty low key it's only once in awhile that a good "dog tail" comes out of them. Believe it or not I'm finally going to the studio to make the instructional video for the Antler Wall Pocket. So, for all of you that have waiting in anticipation for that second look on how to begin the lashing on the antler tip, this is the moment you've been waiting for. To reserve your copy, email me at choatepp@corecom.net and I'll get you on the distribution list. Until we meet in VHS.... Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 05:56:58 -0700 From: "STEPHENSON,KIRSTI (HP-Boise,ex1)" To: "'davidc@iei.net'" I came home yesterday to find a box (covered in duct tape :) at the front door. I tried to remember what I had ordered and then it hit me "The Basket Swap!" With razor blade in hand, and patience tried :) I finally got to the bottom! There, packaged with goodies like basket pasta, herb tea and some candies, was my new basket. The basket is a wonderful "Apple and Banana" basket (by Betty Klitzke) from Barb Foster in Green Bay. The colors are grand and the quality is outstanding! And, the basket has already been put to use as I had a bunch of bananas to hang on the hook and some red delicious apples to put in the basket base. Tucked in with my new basket was a wonderful little egg basket necklace woven in green and blue. Yeee Haaa! This is better than Christmas! Barb, again, thank you so much for the wonderful basket! On a corner spoke or in the middle of a row? These questions are especially if I start with a loop in the center of a long piece. The twine is part of the base, right? When using a "D" handle, that means the twine is under the "D" and the basket rests on it. Should I try to make the twine be part of the side there? Do you prefer to use one long piece making a loop in the center or 2pieces - starting if different places or adjoining spokes? or this just a decision depending on if you have a long piece or 2 short ones. I am trying to make this twine as pretty as possible and I have no use for the idea of taking it out after the sides are set. Thanks Nancy of Glen Arm, Md. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Swap Partners Have been Sent!! Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 14:20:42 -0500 From: "Dolores Gatz" To: "David" Hurray, the time of my taking up half the WW's issue is over. I can finally stop sending the rules in. Well, I think all the swap partners have been sent out. If your still waiting let me know so I can resend. Being it took me so long to get all the partners done. I would however like to extend the shipping date to February 7, 2000. I think that date will still accommodate any valentine baskets being made but give everyone a few more days. I have to say, I owe the previous swap coordinators a big applause. This was a much bigger job then I had expected it to be. I'm not sure if I handled it the long way or if I just needed a test run to get a handle on it. Certain ones of us need to go though this to gain an appreciation. You also, evidently need a big sense of humor because in the middle of it all you get emails from certain individuals (Faye, Debbie Cz.) whom tell you when they got your email they laughed and laughed. They laughed at my pain, of all the nerve. Kathie Anderson was happy that I sent the list of people by name. But guess what, I found a fault in doing that. I'm ready to send my basket out this today and I can't say what state it's going to because it'll tell whom it's directly going to. I now realize, if you know the list and if someone says I just mailed my basket to Utah. Well the one person in Utah then knows' its me, it me'. I think that takes some of the fun out of it. So, someone's basket is in the mail. I've had to sent some peoples partner a second time because they couldn't open it. There was some graphic's involved. The graphic isn't anything important. As long as you have your partners name and address okay don't worry about the graphic. I also noticed some if The address included a web page if I removed the web page the second time then it went thru. Like I said if anyone hasn't gotten theirs yet please let me know. Pam Hancock - I'm finally getting to reading back WW's and came across your suggestion for the Thank Yous. I copied it to attach and forward on to future coordinators. I think you did a great job writing that up. See that's what I meant. You gave me a good template for my future thank yous. As I read it, I was gee why can't I put thoughts together like this. Great job. And once again, thank you for your assistance. Now, also all the talk about glycerin. I have a question. I know you can get glycerin from the drug store. Several years ago, I was taking some classes at an herb farm and thru them purchase a couple of gallons of vegetable glycerin to use in herbal products. I still have a gallon left. Does anyone know is it the same glycerin.
