There is nothing so gratifying as giving or receiving a hand woven basket during the Holidays! I participated in two Guild Christmas Basket Exchanges and I am so happy with both of my new Baskets! One was from a student that I have taught over the years, so nice to have a basket from her as I have watched her love of Basketry grow! I also want to tell you that a free pattern has been added to my Web site www.justpatterns.com on the Weaver's Page. The new pattern is called Holly Berry Christmas Basket by Jim and Diane Langston. Their Basket business is called Di's Heavenly Treasures. This adorable basket is featured twice; one with Holly Berries and the other with Hearts for Valentines' Day is also shown! Both of these baskets are just as cute as can be! Please check them out and write for a catalogue; Diane has some of the most creative and unique baskets around. I was fortunate to have a booth by this delightful couple at the November AMB(Michigan)1999 Convention. Diane does the designing and Jim cuts out all the wooden pieces needed; they are truly a super sweet team!! Enjoy their work as I have done! Wishing you love, peace, and happiness during the Holiday Season! I also wish you "Woven Blessings" in the New Year!! Sheri L. Van Duyn Just Patterns P.S. - I have several students who always weave their Christmas Gifts during the month of January. This way they can remember what they wove and gave the previous year and they get a nice head start on their Weaving!! I always teach a couple of Winter Baskets during January, seems to lengthen the Christmas Season which always goes so fast!! P.S.S. - We will definitely have a beautiful White Christmas in Western Michigan. There are 8 inches on the ground with another 8 inches predicted in the next few days!! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 3 I. 81 Date: Thu, 23 Dec 1999 23:29:36 -0500 From: "Donna L" To: "David Collins" Mary - if you re-read my post, I said we USED to buy it. When we started our business, we were catering the to chair caners mostly and the old timers used to say it kept things wetter longer! Well, I've decided that a sponge will only absorb so much water - that's as wet as it will ever get. We no longer sell it. People still ask for it as I guess old habits are hard to break. BTW, you were lucky - no moon for us on Tuesday due to clouds and rain, but Wednesday night it was beautiful. Barb in WI - You would want to join the MI guild if you want to attend the convention and take classes. As you are very close, you may want to consider it. It is the largest gathering of weavers at one time, in one place, in the world. Happy Holidays Everyone Donna bordlong@fast.net http://www.countryseat.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: I did it! Date: Thu, 23 Dec 1999 23:47:14 -0600 From: Tony Stubblefield or Dean Meredith To: David Collins/Weavers Words Well it is after 11:00pm on the eve before Christmas eve, and I have everything woven, painted and wrapped! I finally got my 2 small baskets finished and they turned out pretty nice, I think everyone will like them. The baskets are potential class projects for this Spring so I will make a second set with some slight modifications for class ease and see how they go. I didn't make as many baskets this year specifically for Christmas, but I am giving 5 as gifts (3 were prototypes I am parting with). I did do some more folk art painting than I have in a while. I painted 4 ornaments, 2 angel plaques and 4 Christmas signs. Well, I think I will relax a bit and then head for bed. I have to pack my clothes and gifts in the morning, swing by Tippins to pick up 4 pies (otherwise I don't think they would let me in!), drop my roommate at the airport and head for my parent's house about 2 hours outside of St. Louis. I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and much weaving in 2000! Thanks, David, for all you do. Hope you're feeling better in time for the holidays. Barb Johnson: I live in Texas but I am a member of AMB. Their newsletter is very good, but the main reason I belong is the annual AMB Convention and the Spring Event. I went to both this year. The Spring Event was great, fun, educational and inspiring. I took classes in things I had never done before, and the teachers were fun and patient. Also I enjoyed visiting the vendors booths. The best part was meeting other basketmakers from all over the country. The AMB convention, which will be held in Grand Rapids in October 2000, is fun, educational, inspiring, and HUGE! First of all is the convention booklet, sent out in May, with descriptions and pictures of the classes. That alone is worth the $20 AMB dues. The procedure for choosing classes is clearly explained, so I won't go into that. At the convention, there is an exhibit room, which is a must-see. The Pattern room is great - baskets are made up from the patterns, so you can see the results, and unlike the exhibit room, you can pick up and examine the baskets. And then there are the vendors - all selling basket-related items: baskets, materials for making baskets, beads, stamps, stationery, stain, fabric, and on and on. The classes were wonderful. They were held in 3 large ballrooms in the hotel. On Saturday, I think all tables in the 3 ballrooms were in use. I not only enjoyed my classes, but it was fun to walk around and see what the other classes were making. And I met more basketmakers from all over the country, including many from Wisconsin. Anyway, that's why I belong to AMB. Hope this helps Pat Walworth Gilmer, TX %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 3 I. 81 Date: Fri, 24 Dec 1999 09:27:59 -0600 From: "Marj and Bill Kammueller" To: "David Collins" References: 1 Retayne is a product used in the fabric dyeing world - available at Dharma Ruppert, Gibbon, and Spider, Standard Dyes, etc. Almost all of them have web sites. Remember what they are REALLY all about, and share it with each other and your families. Once again David, thank you for this terrific forum and all you do. Thanks to everyone who gave me black walnut dye recipes or tips to find them. I am still weaving (after all, it's only Christmas Eve as I write this), but will get at that bucket of nuts in January! I have printed out all the information, and will pick one, and let you know what happens. For Barb Johnson - I , too, live in Wisconsin, but am a member of AMB! The real advantage is that you can go to the AMB convention in fall, where the opportunity for up to 5 days of weaving is incredible; you can choose to learn new techniques, work with a favorite instructor, work on shaping, get better at a type of basket you already do/like, work with totally new [to you] materials, or really stretch your current limits in basketmaking! I had to cancel out this year, and was truly bummed!! It's one of the largest weaving conventions in this area, and an unbelievable experience in itself. Plus you get to meet weavers from all across the country [yes, I really mean that literally], and they have a very large vendor area, with vendors of every basket persuasion. Not to mention the teachers special night, where you can buy things they have made, their patterns, etc. I suspect you'd get hooked too... While other conventions may not be as big as AMB, this is the same reason for belonging to any other out of state guild. Enough, I need to finish weaving and then wrap all those presents! I'd like to get at least a little sleep tonight... Sallie from Reno: Retayne can be ordered from the Dharma Trading Company in San Rafael, CA. They are at www.dharmatrading.com or if you want to talk to a person, at 1-800-524-5227. They are real nice folks, they are prompt, and they have a TON of fiber reactive dyes (procion), which I have used on my reed. Their catalog is free and the dye chart is in color. (Guess it would have to be!) Order the ones for cotton. One thing that may help is to make sure your reed has dried from the dying process. Just a week ago I was in a hurry and dyed the reed and made the basket all in one afternoon. Big mistake!!! I had MAJOR bleeding problems (which I don't usually have). Good luck! I am in the middle of preparing for Christmas celebrations and thought of you and all the wonderful people you have given this WW gift to all year. The way you have connected us has been a gift to treasure. Thank you and Merry Christmas to everyone from here in the warm Sunny Alberta, Canada where I am able to go out in my finery without a coat. Really unusual for us. Enjoy, laugh, eat, put on weight and worry about it later. This is the season to be Jolly. Cheers Rae %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: glycerin etc Date: Sun, 26 Dec 1999 14:26:55 -0500 From: Joe Conroy To: David Collins A Happy and Healthy New Year David, I see a lot of WW's on glycerin for softening reed. You're just breaking down the surface tension of the water and allowing it easier access to the reed. I am a volunteer fire fighter. We make what we call "wet water". Another phrase for breaking surface tension. We just pour a cup or two of liquid Ivory detergent into our water tankers (3000 gallons) and the water penetrates just about anything. I do the same thing when I am working with round reed or making heavy-duty basket rims out of 5/8" half round. Just a couple of drops of liquid detergent into a gallon or so of warm water. The next time you put a greasy skillet into your sink fill the skillet with water. Next add a couple of drops of detergent. What happens? A lot easier to use this instead of making a drive for glycerin. Liquid fabric softener does the same thing. Joe Conroy Exeter, RI P.S. David, aren't you glad you're not a New England Patriots fan? It's tough out here in New England right now. But I wanted to respond to Joy Moody who had an inquiry on Basket Weavers in Washington State. Did you get much of a response? I'm a basket weaver in Montana. I would love to attend a basket weaver's guild but there are none I am aware of. I would also love to attend some of these wonderful conventions I read about, but again nothing in this area, that I am aware of. How do you go about starting one? How do I get some of these expert weavers to come to us? I know several people who would love to attend a workshop etc. and learn about basketweaving.
