I had to go to the hospital twice last week for 2 fairly traumatic procedures. I am currently on a bunch of pain medication and I'm pretty loopy. Hopefully the worst of it is over. The second procedure was to fix the screw up by the doctor doing the first procedure. I have found a very neat web site that might be of help for some of you who are not able to receive faxes. The web page is www.efax.com. It is totally free and the way it works is, you sign up with them, they give you a personal fax number and then whenever you receive a fax it is sent directly to your email. I have no affiliation with them and I have nothing to gain by informing you of them. I just thought it was a pretty neat service. The turnout for free fleece vests was less than I had hoped for, but I received 2 and my friend is going to donate them to the needy veterans at the VA Hospital in Indianapolis. Thank you to everyone that participated. Take Care, David %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: RE: "Weavers Words" V. 3 I. 76 Date: Fri, 10 Dec 1999 06:45:27 -0500 From: "Basketry at About.com" To: "David Collins" Happy Holidays to All I wanted to let you all know that I have made some gift tags with basketry themes you might enjoy using on your holiday packages. http://basketry.about.com/library/bltagchristmas.htm Susi Nuss %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 3 I. 76 Date: Fri, 10 Dec 1999 10:51:48 EST From: Linhebert@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Re: Basket Moon. Carolyn in VA - try the patterns by Barbara Pedersen or Grace Kabel. All of their patterns are pictured in our on-line catalog - http://www.countryseat.com/shophome.htm People weaving antler baskets - please be sure to check the laws in your state! In PA it is illegal to sell an antler (and that includes an antler basket) unless you are the hunter of said antler. You may give away an antler in any form or keep it for yourself, but may not sell it. You can purchase an antler from the hunter within 90 days of the close of that season the antler was taken or use antlers lawfully taken in another state, but may not sell them. Make sure that you don't weave a beautiful basket only to have it confiscated by the game commission in your state! Too cold already for me in PA, Angie The Country Seat http://www.countryseat.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weaver's Words Date: Fri, 10 Dec 1999 11:49:40 -0500 From: "Joy Moody" To: Hi Everyone, I've been reading but not posting. Lots of orders this season & now the flu has slowed me down. A word on swaps: I was the one who got the Weaver's Words swap ball rolling way back when.........these swaps were started with sharing in mind......to share our love of basketry, continue to develop our skills, send a surprise basket/get a surprise basket. PLEASE, those of you who are beginners, don't feel your efforts are unappreciated or "not good enough"! We've all started at the beginning. In a little while you'll look back at those first efforts & see how far you've come, & how quickly! I personally think it's out to pock in some "extras" if you want to, but I have wondered whether posting about the extras has intimidated some folks. The "maximum dollar amount on materials" was originally set so that all could participate & feel this was affordable fun. FUN, that's the operative word! A request: If you are a basket maker in Washington state, please e-mail me. Do you have a guild there? Look among the drain cleaners, and select Red Devil Lye. It's about the only one that has no additives. Thanks for the tip about the Dec. issue of Crafts Report Magazine. Since I hope to begin selling kits and patterns in the coming year, as well as doing more teaching, it sounds like a good thing for me to read. Dolores von Rosen in S.C. - I don't have specifics for jurying baskets, but have judged a number of arts & sciences competitions in my historic recreation organization (Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc.). The qualities we look for are Authenticity (to the period in question - you probably don't need this one), Complexity, Craftsmanship, Creativity, Documentation (this also may not apply, as it has to do with verifying authenticity) and Judge's Opinion (sometimes called the OH WOW! Factor, based on gut reaction to the piece). Maybe this will help a little. Carolyn of Suffolk, Va. - I'm not familiar with a lot of basket patterns, but judging from the ones I've seen, It would be a fairly simple thing to increase the size by adding spokes and using larger materials. I find 1-inch reed somewhat awkward to work with, so would be inclined to increase spokes rather than go quite that big. But I have used 1-inch flat reed for a twill bottom and then split the spokes after up-setting. The sides were also woven in a twill pattern, but not the same as the bottom. I strengthened the basket by adding several flat oval spokes. I have also seen some large baskets made with double layers of spokes. There's no reason you have to follow the color and embellishment instructions in a pattern. If you find a shape you like, go ahead and make it plain or minimize the color. I get good results from applying walnut stain over dyed reed. It's an effective way to tone down the brightness of synthetic dyes. Beth Bechtel - Thanks for the book review! I have been weaving for a few years but not as "often" as it sounds most of the members have...I would be very interested in participating in a "Basket Swap 101"...what about having those who sign up for the swap indicate how many years they have been weaving or their level of expertise and pair up partners who are on the same level? Obviously, there will be weavers who have only been weaving for one year who may create baskets like a pro..but, it still would be less intimidating for us beginners! ...Bev %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Hello and Basket Links Date: Sun, 12 Dec 1999 12:08:28 -0500 From: "Sheri Van Duyn" To: Hi David, Happy Holidays!!
