I want to make "real" soap, but am having a difficult time finding lye. Neither of our major hardware chains carry it, so my next stop is Ace Hardware. This is kind of neat so far. Selling it? Maybe at my booth in the spring, but you can bet I*ll have insurance. I*m getting that anyway. The Dec. issue of CRAFTS REPORT is a keeper! It gives business tips A-Z and I*ve decided to do things a tad different after reading this magazine. If you sell, it is definitely worth a read. It covers everything from taxes to setting up a successful booth to organizing your production time to useful tips from fellow artists. I found this copy at Borders, but you can probably find it at any good book store. Elk, whitetail, blacktail, fallow, mule deer, and probably caribou and maybe even reindeer. Every year they fall off and then starts the process of regrowth. Time varies as to when they fall off, but it's usually in late winter, very early spring. When searching for naturally shed antlers in the wild, you might try looking for shed antlers around their bedding areas, near water sources, by fences where they might jump over, and around trees where they might rub their horns. Butcher shops and processing plants are a good source for harvested antlers, as are hunters, antique dealers, swap and flea markets and rendezvous or trader markets or meets. There are also some basketry suppliers that carry antlers, check with Royalwood, Gratiot Lake, Judy Brisco in Florida, Jill Choate in Alaska and there's one other one in Florida but I can't think of the name right now. Maybe David has them listed here on his web site. I make, sell and teach antler baskets but do not sell the antlers other than to my students. I am not set up to do mail order, so it's difficult for me to handle that process. Basketpatterns.com is now carrying several of my patterns, four of which are antler basket patterns, check them out. I am also teaching at several workshops and at several folk schools in 2000. If your guild or any others would like me to teach, have them contact me ASAP, the calendar is filling up fast. Don't know why I am the last minute thinking of WW as the best possible resource for basketry needs! The Upper S.C. Basket Guild is sponsoring a two-day seminar in June (if anyone is interested in obtaining a brochure, contact Sandy Elrecht at basket-lady@ibm.net or Debbie Ogle at debasket1@aol.com) and the committee to jury baskets is revising the criteria. Would any of you who have ideas/outlines/pamphlets, etc. on jurying please send or e-mail them to me? Thanks so much. I also want to say that Pam and Dan Feix have worked very hard to develop a base and handle for a basket I make. If any of you have "different" ideas for a basket, believe me, these two don't give up until it is just right - in these days and times I really appreciate quality work! We finally had our first snow Sunday morning. Only about an inch, but it followed a weekend that tried to make up for all the November weekend we didn't have last month - gray and gloomy with cold rain. The roads were clear by the time I went to Woven Circle about 1 PM. Interestingly enough, the basket class was a snowman from one of Susan Reed-Fanfoni's patterns. Paul Scranton - Roberta & Bert are one and the same person. Bert is my nickname. :-) Laurie in Virginia - Everyone is welcome to join in the WW basket swaps - even rank beginners. Don't be daunted by the fact that some of the baskets are woven by experts. They know when they sign up that their partner may be a beginner. Bonnie in Southwestern Michigan - Thanks for describing the potato masher basket. So the handle of the masher becomes the handle of the basket? Very interesting! I'll have to try one. Do you usually get the mashers that have a wire bent into tall skinny waves? I've also seen some that have a plate with holes in it - or is that technically a ricer? Dolores - It's good to hear that you're getting a good response on WW Swap #7. Having someone else assign the partners is a clever way to do that. Remember to rest, relax and enjoy! Anna D. THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS 'Twas the night before Christmas, He lived all alone, In a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone. I had come down the chimney with presents to give, And to see just who in this home did live. I looked all about, a strange sight I did see, No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree. No stocking by mantle, just boots filled with sand, On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands. With medals and badges, awards of all kinds, A sober thought came through my mind. For this house was different, it was dark and dreary, I found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly. The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone, Curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home. The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder, Not how I pictured a United States soldier. Was this the hero of whom I'd just read? Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed? I realized the families that I saw this night, Owed their lives to these soldiers who were willing to fight. Soon round the world, the children would play, And grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas day. They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, Because of the soldiers, like the one lying here. I couldn't help wonder how many lay alone, On a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home. The very thought brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees and started to cry. The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice, "Santa don't cry, this life is my choice; I fight for freedom, I don't ask for more, My life is my god, my country, my corps." The soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep, I couldn't control it, I continued to weep. I kept watch for hours, so silent and still And we both shivered from the cold night's chill. I didn't want to leave on that cold, dark, night, This guardian of honor so willing to fight. Then the soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure, Whispered, "carry on Santa, it's Christmas day, all is secure." One look at my watch, and I knew he was right. "Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night." This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan. The following is his request. I think it is reasonable.....PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S. service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us. Please, do your small part to plant this small seed. It has been out since July, but I just came saw it yesterday. It is called BASKET MOON, by Mary Lyn Ray - illustrated by Barbara Cooney - retail hardcover $15.95 - ISBN 0316735213. It is about a little boy whose father is a basket maker. When the father and son go into town to sell their baskets the townspeople make fun of them and call them names, at first the boy is embarrassed but gets over being called names and realizes that he is meant to make baskets just like his father does. I know the message is not to worry about what people say about you and that is a good message. But More Importantly, this is a book about Basketmakers!! It is a sweet one, look at it if you get the chance. The author included a page about the history of basket makers in a particular area (somewhere in New England...I don't quite remember where). Everything seems to be a quickie. I need addresses from the following people. Judy Powell Juanita Carreon That is unless you gals only wanted a photo on the baskets emailed to ya. I can arrange that too. I do have a scanner. Personally, I'd prefer to have the basket. I've been reading everyone's comments about pass swaps. I seems everyone's been enjoying themselves and hope everyone will be happy with this one. Hello Weavers Words Weavers! Once again Here are the rules and sign-up directions for the 7th WW basket Swap! This will be a swap in which you send a basket you have woven to one person and receive a basket woven by someone else. Weave a basket you would be pleased to receive. DO NOT contact the person you are weaving for until you hear from them that they have received your basket. This swap is for Weavers Words subscribers only. You may sign up for this swap one time only. Sign up will be open from now until January 3,2000. (I am not placing a limit on the number of people who can sign up.) I will send you a message with the name and address of the recipient of your basket. Your personally woven basket must be sent to that person no later than February 1, 2000 (earlier is fine!). Anyone who has failed to follow through on participation in a previous WW swap will not be registered for this one unless they are able to provide written proof from the recipient of their basket that they did satisfactorily complete the earlier swap. To sign up for WW Swap #7, send an email message to me at email address containing the following information: Your Name Your Mailing Address Your Telephone Number Your Email Address. Optional information you may include if you wish: (Likes and dislikes) Reviewing notes from previous coordinator's, there was someone that received a necklace and was not into woven jewelry. Basically, these are the same rules that Bert used for signing up. I'm not putting a limit on the # of participants. All are welcome. A few additional notes are related to comments I have received from some members of weaver's words. Please keep in mind all part of a family and none of these words are meant to hurt. I just the middle person of some comments. No names are going to be mentioned, but I'm giving certain people to opportunity to be heard. * Someone suggested - real 'thank you note' via mail to the person they receive a swap from. This person had woven a basket and includes a few extras and only got a email saying 'I got the basket'. She feels that the basket was at least worth the postage of a nice note. [Well, in this day and age of rush, I think we all sometimes forget the pleasantries of life. I know, I'm so busy that I have to assign a day in my calendar just to do bills, before they come to lock me up. Also, I'm not the greatest with words. Some of the messages I see on weavers words of 'thank you', I'm sooo envious. I'm sure I have been as thrilled with the baskets I've received in the swaps as the other people writing those messages. I'm just not as good with putting the feelings into words as others. In this day and age, my life seems to function around email and personally I've forgotten about the old way of mailing a Thank You note. Quoting Bert, "Perhaps everyone should write a thank-you they would like to receive." We all must remember, I sure we're all putting a special effort into weaving this basket for another basket lover out there. And Personally, I think we all deserve a big round of applause for the efforts we've been putting into these baskets. (If David's message could have handled it, I would have attached a applause button here so those of us with speakers could hear it.) Maybe, we can remember David's electronic card section. They do have an area for our own messages on them.] * Another person suggested a millennium basket swap as a theme. She would like to see everyone to do a brand new type of basket. [This is an excellent thought. But technically, the new millennium starts with 2001.] * I thought about the theme being Valentine Basket Swap. Only, I feared everyone would be weaving, sending and receiving the same heart shaped basket. Wow, that was a scary thought. As I thought about it I think I'd like the us to weave with a few thoughts in mind. If everyone gets the basket mailed February first. Give or take how fast the delivery a lot of the baskets would be arriving around Valentine's Day or just prior to. So I'm not going to assign a Theme to the swap. Just of reminded of the time of year and because it's also the beginning of a New Year and everyone thinking about the Millennium. Maybe, we can think about trying a new basket. Who knows maybe one of us will develop the newest, greatest, hottest Valentine basket to date. Anyone that has sent me a want to be in Swap #7. I have already put you on the list. Like Bert I will post these rules between now and January 3 a couple more times along with any additional comments. Happy Weaving!
