First, the other night I was thinking about the Y2K bug and something popped up in my mind. Make sure to check your checkbooks and look at the checks on the date line. Most checks already have "19" down for the start of the year so when the year 2000 comes you'll either need new checks or cross out the 19 and I'm not sure if the banks will like that. Secondly, lately I've been receiving a lot of junk email with the subject line something like "RE: the information you requested". This is a trick to make you think you wrote them. Don't fall for it. Usually it's a Get Rich Scheme or porn. Just thought I'd let you know. Take care, David %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Rather be basket weaving Date: Wed, 01 Dec 1999 22:03:03 -0500 From: nancy brandt To: "davidc@iei.net" Hi David, I have the license plate rim on my car - "I'd Rather Be Basketweaving"; I love it; Its $6.00 including shipping from ROSE E BASKETS 3106 Starling Ln. Wa-------y back in the ' 60's and ' 70's, we both lived in the same town - we both worked for the same college - we both enjoyed the sport of hunting deer. How neat and unexpected to receive such a reply 35 years later. To Roberta and Bert Comstock - Deer horns are harder to find then black ash trees. White tail deer usually lose their horns/antlers after the first of the year. Being a source of protein, mice usually consume them before snow melt. I have never used this material in weaving, mostly because of my novice experience. I have word out to two local processing stations for antlers - time will tell. It's been a while since I've written. I've been driving myself crazy trying to get ready for my annual Christmas Down on the Farm at my log cabin. It will be this weekend Dec. 4th & 5th. I've been making baskets, soap, signs, ornaments, etc. It always seems as if I don't have enough. But I have a basket friend that brings lots of her beautiful baskets. Plus other crafters make barnwood things, like birdhouses, & rustic ornaments. Next weekend I'll be doing another show at our local outlet mall. So another week to drive myself crazy. Why do we do this to ourselves? It's certainly not for the riches it brings. My friend Ginny would also like to learn more about making a peanut basket, where can she buy the pattern? Hope everyone has a happy holiday season. Until next time. Oh well, I'll get there eventually. Maybe, after the holidays, one or two of you other beginners would like to do one-on-one swaps with me? That might be fun, and get our confidence up. I'll mention it again in January. Keep all the great advice and tips and encouragement coming, everyone! Lori, Good luck with the kids class, I just recently taught a high school group and we had 1 hour daily. They were great and caught on quick, but it just isn't enough time. They just get their momentum going and then it's time to quit. The next day they had to 'get in the groove' again, so to speak. My group was older and I don't mean to discourage you, because they've already talked to me about doing it and again and I've agreed, but it is quite frustrating to have to quit when you just see them beginning to really get going and enjoying themselves. Let me know if I can help. Lynda Crowe West Virginia, where the temps are bouncing erratically. I weave the potatoe masher into the basket. There are several types of mashers when you start to look for them. The two styles that I use are the ones that are 4 inches across and go straight up for three inches then they bend into the handle. The other masher is 3 and 1/2 inches wide and it's sides form a triangle to the base of the handle. I place the base over the masher so it rest on top of the masher. I use five spokes and have to add filers depending on how much space is in it. They are 8 inches long by three inches high. Done in a basis over under weave. For the mashers that go up in the shape of a triangle I use a modified Meg Thompson style weave. It has a braided weave rim rather that a lashed rim. I saw a basket similar to this at a craft show but modified it to fit the baskets that I weave. Mashers can be purchased at antique stores ranging in price from $2.00 - $15.00. The handles and condition determine the price. I usually only spend $2-$3. Garage sales are also a great place to get them. The baskets are good for putting salt and pepper in or rolled up napkins. I've moved twice in the last 6 months so it could be out there in postal service limbo. I'm glad I have Outlook 2000. It's been making it so easy so far. I just set in up where all of you that put Swap in the subject to send that email to a certain folder. I had forgotten to add that to the sign up instructions. Thought of it after I sent it. But, I had faith and everyone came though by automatically putting it in. This feature was a big help because anything to do with the swap didn't mix in with the balance of my email. At the end of day, I'd browse through them to answer any question. Anyway, we now have 73 people enrolled in the swap. My cousin will be assigning everyone their swap partner. That's so I won't know whom gets my name. I think that's half the fun, wondering who's got me. I had to turn my speakers off because all day long to the first few days it was 'you've got mail'. I have read everyone's comments and Connie's going to try to do her best matching everyone up. It was interesting reading everyone's comments and interests. I'll keep everyone up on how things are going.
