Are you going to make baskets with the antlers of your deer? The deer population seems to be way up in our part of the country. We saw about 10 road-kill deer on our 200-mile drive to Lincoln, NE for Thanksgiving. Well, folks, I finally got all the swap coordinator files sent of to Dolores Gatz. Watch this space for her announcement and rules of the 7th WW basket swap! Thanksgiving was great. In addition to good company and food, I had the pleasure of weaving my first rush seat on a rocking chair that belonged to my sister-in-law's grandmother. The paper rush it had on it had been stained or varnished and was brittle and breaking up. I replaced it with sea grass. It looks good and smells nice besides. It was also more fun than I expected. The only down side was that i braced the chair between my knees as I worked on it and now my thighs feel like I've been horseback riding for hours! A recent trip to a thrift store yielded a copy of a pattern book called SIMPLICITY PAPER TWIST BASKETS (#3740), published by the Simplicity Pattern Company, Inc., New York, in 1993. The author/designer is Robin Greenwood. The patterns are pretty simple and there are full size outline patterns for embellishments to be cut from flattened paper rush. The baskets are woven over cardboard boxes (mostly the size of long and square tissue boxes). It looks as if the paper rush would be pretty easy for children to work with. They would also work well as colorful centerpieces. It is worked dry, untwisted, but not entirely flattened out. Several of the baskets have holiday themes: Thanksgiving turkey basket, Halloween jack-o-lantern basket, heart baskets and Easter baskets. I have no idea whether it is still in print, but if so, it might be available at a fabric & craft store. Bert Comstock, Independence, MO %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weavers Words Date: Sun, 28 Nov 1999 19:39:50 EST From: "Patricia Steinmetz" To: davidc@iei.net I would like to share some thoughts about the WW patches, T-shirts, buttons, or what ever you decide to do. I think that it is a good idea, but there may be some problems. I contacted David a few weeks ago about an idea for a T-shirt with a logo and design that I thought he should market on his web site. I think he like the idea but I don't know if he is going to follow through with it. The problems with someone doing patches or badges or buttons is two fold. #1. David owns Weavers Words, so any product SOLD with the words "Weavers Words" on it, I think, would have to be Okayed by David. What I am trying to say is, I think you have to have David's permission to use the phrase "Weavers Words" on any product that you are going to sell. #2. I don't know about other conventions, but at IBA you can not sell ANYTHING without paying a venders fee and renting venders space. Our guild was going to sell our cookbooks at the next IBA convention and were told that we would have to go through the same procedure as any other vender. I have an idea that everyone could do on their own to identify themselves as WW people without all of the hassles of copyright infringement. Using a piece of 5/8 or 7/8-inch scrap reed, glue a craft pin to the wrong side. Them decorate the front with the letters WW. You could make the "WW" out of round reed or sequins or felt or what ever you choose. Let your imagination go. Then you would have a "WW" pin to wear to convention, or guild or wherever. Marty H - You have the purest soul of anyone I know. You are such a caring, giving person. I can see why Mark and Dollie adopted you. You and I met at IBA last year. (I'm the one that had a picture of David) I think about you often and Wish we could have spent more time together. I will definitely look for you this coming year. Faye Simmons - thank you for doing the research about the missing child. I for one am glad to know the outcome. I am also glad that there are people like you that take the time to check these things out. Well, I have said way more then I intended. I am going to teach classes at our elementary school here in town and need some easy basket ideas for kids. I have limited time, 1 hr per week for 10 weeks. I would love your ideas and suggestions. Insignia as in patches. Through him, I can have high quality, up to 7 color, patches made in quantities as small as 50 pieces for a very reasonable price (about 1.50/ea for a 2"x2") Larger sizes are more expensive, but larger quantities are cheaper. Individual guilds could have their own distinct emblem or conventions could have a yearly patch. We are also working on pricing for pins. They will be more expensive than patches and the minimum quantity on them will be 200. There is a setup/die fee for pins, but not for patches. If anyone is interested, let me know. Here are the rules and sign-up directions for the 7th WW basket Swap! This will be a swap in which you send a basket you have woven to one person and receive a basket woven by someone else. Weave a basket you would be pleased to receive. DO NOT contact the person you are weaving for until you hear from them that they have received your basket. This swap is for Weavers Words subscribers only. You may sign up for this swap one time only. Sign up will be open from now until January 3,2000. (I am not placing a limit on the number of people who can sign up.) I will send you a message with the name and address of the recipient of your basket. Your personally woven basket must be sent to that person no later than February 1, 2000 (earlier is fine!). Anyone who has failed to follow through on participation in a previous WW swap will not be registered for this one unless they are able to provide written proof from the recipient of their basket that they did satisfactorily complete the earlier swap. To sign up for WW Swap #7, send an email message to me at email address containing the following information: Your Name Your Mailing Address Your Telephone Number Your Email Address. Optional information you may include if you wish: (Likes and dislikes) Reviewing notes from previous coordinators, there was someone that received a necklace and was not into woven jewelry. Basically, these are the same rules that Bert used for signing up. I'm not putting a limit on the # of participants. All are welcome. A few additional notes are related to comments I have received from some members of weaver's words. Please keep in mind all part of a family and none of these words are meant to hurt. I just the middle person of some comments. No names are going to be mentioned, but I'm giving certain people to opportunity to be heard. * Someone suggested - real 'thank you note' via mail to the person they receive a swap from. This person had woven a basket and includes a few extras and only got a email saying 'I got the basket'. She feels that the basket was at least worth the postage of a nice note. [Well, in this day and age of rush, I think we all sometimes forget the pleasantries of life. I know, I'm so busy that I have to assign a day in my calendar just to do bills, before they come to lock me up. Also, I'm not the greatest with words. Some of the messages I see on weavers words of 'thank you', I'm sooo envious. I'm sure I have been as thrilled with the baskets I've received in the swaps as the other people writing those messages. I'm just not as good with putting the feelings into words as others. In this day and age, my life seems to function around email and personally I've forgotten about the old way of mailing a Thank You note. Quoting Bert, "Perhaps everyone should write a thank-you they would like to receive." We all must remember, I sure we're all putting a special effort into weaving this basket for another basket lover out there. And Personally, I think we all deserve a big round of applause for the efforts we've been putting into these baskets. (If David's message could have handled it, I would have attached a applause button here so those of us with speakers could hear it.) Maybe, we can remember David's electronic card section. They do have an area for our own messages on them.] * Another person suggested a millennium basket swap as a theme. She would like to see everyone to do a brand new type of basket. [This is an excellent thought. But technically, the new millennium starts with 2001.] * I thought about the theme being Valentine Basket Swap. Only, I feared everyone would be weaving, sending and receiving the same heart shaped basket. Wow, that was a scary thought. As I thought about it I think I'd like the us to weave with a few thoughts in mind. If everyone gets the basket mailed February first. Give or take how fast the delivery a lot of the baskets would be arriving around Valentine's Day or just prior to. So I'm not going to assign a Theme to the swap. Just of reminded of the time of year and because it's also the beginning of a New Year and everyone thinking about the Millennium. Maybe, we can think about trying a new basket. Who knows maybe one of us will develop the newest, greatest, hottest Valentine basket to date. Anyone that has sent me a want to be in Swap #7. I have already put you on the list. Like Bert I will post these rules between now and January 3 a couple more times along with any additional comments. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 3 I. 73 Date: Wed, 1 Dec 1999 10:39:39 -0800 From: martyhln@juno.com To: davidc@iei.net Hi David, and World Basketmakers, First off thank you, Dolly, and Mark, I received a package by UPS late last evening, now really Dolly do you think the box was big enough. The shirt is knock down gorgeous, I think you so much, for just about everything, You guys are just too much. Weavers Stain, is such a good product, and to have the owners to be so nice, it is just too much I guess I will not attend IBA this year as I only saw 5 baskets that I would have liked to make, and felt that would be unfair to the selection committee, so I expect to just skip that one Boo Hoo!!! I know I will miss being there. Teachers you need to submit for next year, so there is more choices, for the average convention groupies, like myself, who just like people and would like to do a challenging baskets. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Now I hope the stores have all that you dream about in the stores so you can spend your money wisely. Save some to buy basket stuff and of course Weavers Stain. I am loosing things lately maybe too busy, thanks Jo and Sue. It seems everyone needs to watch out for me. It sure feels nice to be loved.
