Date: Mon, 01 Nov 1999 22:42:30 EST From: "K A" To: davidc@iei.net Hi All, My hubby and I are going on a "Furniture Buying Vacation" to High Point, NC. The Mecca of furniture stores and discounts. Anything more than 20% off is a deal to us Northeners!! We're driving (just in case we find lamps, etc) and would love to know if there are any "BASKET SHOPS" along the way. Please e-mail me and let me know by Friday!! This is short notice, but so was the idea of going -- last minute trips are the best kind in our house. It's 72 degrees outside now and will be 48 degrees when I get up for work in the morning!! BUT OF COURSE --- IT'S MICHIGAN!!! Kathie A. Then I put it in my "Baskets" folder. That way I don't have to go through the entire newsletter later to find something, which, as many of you know, is almost impossible. But tonight it has cooled down & we may be in the 40's tomorrow. There is a possibility of snow on Wed. Hopefully it will not come, to much of a change for me. Meeting times for those that want to connect faces w/names at AMB. THURS. 6:30 PM, FRI. between 4:30 - 5:00 PM and SAT. 5:30 PM. I am repeating this for those that may have missed it. Hoping that you all wear your RED RIBBONS even if you think you might not make these times. You may just have someone in your class that is a WW member. I did last year. Or as you are going to the various locations, keep your eyes out for red ribbons next to the name tags. Meet near the front desk lobby area. There are couches & chairs there. David: What kind of shopping have you done lately? Keep up the wonderful work. Hoping that this issue goes out by Wednesday. Thanks for all you do. We think it was our best ever. This was my first year in the Albemarle Craftsman's Guild and we had the best time ever. Rebecca Ladew (and other WW's): Billie Ruth's basket is on page 8nc, which makes me wonder if it only appears in a NC edition? The name of the article is Showcasing the South. The basket is Fibonacci 21. Hope this helps. Wish copyright laws were so stringent so we could copy this out to everyone! Gotta run so I can get all these new orders out. I sent an e-mail several weeks ago via another ISP I am trying out and it never made it I guess. Amy in BG was wondering about dremmels quite a while ago, she may have one by now...do you? I use mine quite a bit, it is good for rough shaping on rims and used it for drilling all those shells! Amy, if you haven't gotten one yet, be sure when you do to get an extra battery pack..... The shells came out ok, I got real good at gluing them back together! It seems the dental bits I used worked and when I tried to make a larger hole with a slightly bigger bit, a lot of the shells would break, and funny enough it seemed to be the bigger thicker shells that would break more easily! Go figure. I got them attached to a Cherokee Picnic basket (pattern in Silers book), and it turned out ok, I am rather disappointed in the handles and will be making the 1st rim a bit differently next time as handle on this one kept falling out. But that is ok, I am keeping this basket and using it for yarn right now. I haven't been weaving much lately as I have been crocheting, trying to get an afghan done for my new niece coming at Christmas time. Between that, and everything else (like work) etc, not able to get into the room much. That will be corrected soon, as I have to get some done for gifts. Someone asked a few issues ago what randing is, it is I believe (at least I use the terms interchangeably) the same as twining. If you are a fairly new weaver I would suggest getting a few books, like, Lyn Silers "The Basket Book" and Betsy Clarks book "Addicted to Baskets" Both are very good at explaining terms and techniques. I do have a fair start on the Grandmothers Basket, and will be working on it again at guild this week as it is an open weave. As soon as that one is done, Christmas gifts will begin! I work better under pressure!!!!! Hope everyone takes care, hope all who are going to conventions write a lot about them for those of us who couldn't go this year, and are waiting and saving for next year! Debbie G In NW Ohio where it was warm and nice yesterday, but cool and rainy today, and a forecast for flurries for tomorrow-yikes! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 3 I. 63 Date: Tue, 2 Nov 1999 09:19:30 EST From: SUSANRDGRS@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net David Again thankless for this forum -- and belated happy birthday. In addition to the baskets in my life is an extensive collection of FLAMINGOS - yes here in midcoast Maine we call them "snow chickens" but I love them dearly -- from plastic, pink & tacky to blown glass. It is wonderfully informative and I enjoy the people who write. There is one suggestion, or request perhaps, I have for everyone. Please respond online instead of, or in addition to personally contacting the person with an answer or a suggestion. When I asked a question, I got personal responses that were wonderful and immediate. I really appreciated them and didn't think of a downside until I heard from people who had the same question and were waiting for my answer. So to all you helpful people out there, let us all read it, OK? Also, when can we expect the next swap? I too attended the conference at Arrowmont and it was wonderful. My only "complaint" is that there just wasn't enough time to do everything you wanted. It really is nice to be able to put a face to all those names. About the clothespins. In addition to looking for pins made in the US also look for the ones made of hardwood. They are the best. I think they do cost a bit more but they're worth it. It's the only time I've ever put my initials on clothespins. Don't care if I lose the other kind. I think you might be right about different issues of Southern Living. I had just finished the latest issue so pulled it from the recycling bin but couldn't find Billie Ruth's basket either. The current issue of Maine Antique Digest has a two-page article by Martha W. about old baskets. It shows pictures of some very unusual ones. Almost forgot, when I was browsing ebay the other day I came across a book named Fine Woodworking on Bending Wood. It is a compilation of 35 past articles in their magazine. The first article in there is by ? Martha. about weaving baskets from the tree. You can tell it's one of the older articles by the pictures and text. Anyway for those of you interested in making you own handles I think it might be worthwhile. I found it at Amazon -$7.96 + 3.95 shipping and handling. $11.91 total. Not only that I ordered it on Sun. and it arrived on Tuesday. Talk about ordering things has hit one of my new pet peeves. In this day of computers it drives me nuts to order basket supplies and when they arrive to find that all of the order isn't there but has been back ordered. It seems to me that the person taking the order should be able to tell you that it wasn't available at that point. That way you'd be able to agree to the b.o. or try to order it somewhere else if you were in a terrible rush (who isn't) I know the individual one person "shops" might not be able to do this, but they seem to know what their stock is anyway. The major suppliers should be able to see on the computer what is available. Since I'm not the swiftest person on the computer maybe I'm over rating it's abilities. I'm not complaining about anyone in particular, just that it has happened with different suppliers recently. Nothing to do with baskets-but I can't believe that I'm so "unobservant" that for the past 35 years I have opened multitudes of boxes of Bisquick without seeing the "refrigerate after opening to maintain freshness" on the top of the box. Lois, I've been thinking about your problem of "competition" with your students. I think your problem is directly connected to being on an island. I suspect that the majority of students who take your classes don't really do it with the intention of selling or teaching big time. But then they become hooked like the rest of us and need some way to cover the expenses of buying new supplies and taking more classes. Since your area is so limited in venues for sales and classes they basically must compete with you or not do it. Thereby creating a monopoly So there is the dilemma. Yes there is a non compete clause in the business world but that often includes a mileage area and/or a length of time and often concerns a unique product or client list. Since what you're doing is not proprietary it probably doesn't apply. Guess you're basically in a damned if you do damned if you don't situation. I once read concerning imitators that by the time they are able to compete with you you have moved on to other types so they will never catch up. Guess this is enough for now as I should be weaving. I have enjoyed reading all the Weavers Words news for a while, and now I have a question that I hope someone can help me answer. We are planning a trip to Newport News, VA, and I was wondering if there are any basket shops in the area. This is my first trip to VA. We are going to visit our daughter and her new husband. They are both in the Army and we are all very excited about the trip.
