Date: 30 Oct 1999 04:11:01 -0000 From: "J. Choate Basketry List" To: List Member J. Choate Basketry List - http://www.corecom.net/~choatepp Well the snow has come but not enough to cover the bumps and stumps that are required to run the dogs. Instead of running the dogs I have been running the roads. 140 miles into Wasilla and home and 240 miles into Anchorage twice a week makes me a confirmed road warrior for the month of October. Soon, we'll add air miles to that figure as I head to Portland to teach classes. The antler bowl and the side antler baskets are scheduled on November 6-7. If you're interested in attending either class you can still sign up by contacting Terry Sanchez at TEXASWEAVER@worldnet.att.net. November finds me in Anchorage at Color Creek Fiber Arts teaching the side antler basket on November 13th. For more information or to sign up for this class you may contact Mary Hertert at maryh@alaska.net or by phone at (907) 344-7967. From that date on I should be home running the dogs, watching the crock-pot simmer and stoking the fire. Patterns for the antler bowl basket are now available for those who are interested. Fee for the pattern is $5.00 plus an additional $1.50 for shipping and handling. Antler Tip: When trying to decide the shape of your antler basket always consult with the antler first. Using a piece of #8 round reed, manipulate the reed into the shape you are trying to accomplish before the actual drilling takes place. This way you have a better idea of the angle that you will need to achieve the look that you're trying to create. Hope your Halloween basket is full of treats and contains few tricks. Boo!! Harrow" Organization: AnnCrafted To: David Collins Hi weavers, Back by popular demand, we have been able to schedule a class with Vladimir Yarish on Nov 10 in Granby, CT, hosted by Mary Jane Ducharme. We'll have AMB-lag, but will do our best. It will be a bigger shallow dish, 7-8" diam, for those who have taken his classes before or are familiar with diagonal plaiting. Otherwise, we'll do a scaled down version for those who are not. The 8-hour class will be $95, the 4-hour, $50, and we can pro-rate everything in between. MaryJane promised her almond squares and deviled eggs. Everyone is to bring a dish (hopefully with something in it!), and we'll convene at 9:00. If you're a Northeast Guild member, you have her address and phone number, so give her a call. Otherwise, you can e-mail me or leave a message at 781/659-4464, but I won't be able to return calls until the evening of the 9th. We are also working to schedule a class at Yvonne's Basket Shoppe (BASKSHOPPE@aol.com) in Bel Air, MD, after that. It may be two 4-hour classes, but we're still figuring it out. We had a great visit with Donna and Angie at the Country Seat and met some talented students. Vladimir has now added "wiggle" to his vocabulary, a word which was amply demonstrated by Sherry! And he has added an out-door hot tub to his experiences. Thanks to Donna and Angie for hosting us! In the meantime, I've been searching for that perfect basket room attached to a house, but so far nothing has turned up. So I'm still "homeless in Mass" and without weaving stuff. See you in Michigan, Ann %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 3 I. 62 Date: Sat, 30 Oct 1999 09:17:33 EDT From: Linhebert@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Re: Beginner's Questions & Answers I thought that beginners might be interested in our website's Question & Answer Page for Beginners. I was so excited. I read one of the letters and she was talking about using clothespins on the baskets to hold the rims on while you get ready to weave them on. Well, I have a better idea that we got from one of our teachers and that is using "cable ties". They work so much better (don't pop off) and are available at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc. You just slip them on under and around the rim material and lock them, when you are done weaving you go back and cut them off. Happy weaving everyone! Last year I saw a small photo of Billy Ruth Suddaths's basket in a Southern Living Magazine at the hairdressers. I went straight over to Books a Million to purchase a copy and searched the issue from cover to cover several times to no avail. Also want to say what a great time I had at Mt. Olive College at Seminar East. If you want to taste Susanne Miller's great soup then plan on going to the Goldweavers yearly weave-in in the fall. Because they have a Basketville store near that area, most stores sell these made in China imports. You can find the nicest artisan shops in PA but most carry these Basketville baskets. There is one large touristy area - I thought it was Kitchen Kettle, but I am not positive - it has a huge parking lot in front and behind is a mini town of artisans - most display hand made crafts. There is a basket maker there with her own shop. She proudly displays her small selection of rib style hand woven baskets and there are a few other baskets she has made. However, a good number of the baskets in this shop are bought from Basketville. I was shocked to see the number of these baskets in this woman's booth/shop, and she was not differentiating them from her own which she had woven and set amongst the imports. On one trip there, this woman was sitting out front hand weaving a basket telling all the onlookers about herself as they picked up Basketville baskets and said they were lovely. I would suggest on a trip to Lancaster, visit Basketville first, then you will be familiar with what's out there. Basketville also has a web site if anyone wants to see what types of baskets they offer - for low prices (http://www.basketville.com/index.htm) Susan in NY %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Various Date: Sat, 30 Oct 1999 19:49:13 EDT From: Corbettrj@aol.com To: DAVIDC@iei.net Shirley - We did have someone install our cabinets. They also came and measured. Unfortunately, for us they couldn't measure very well. I have a microwave oven that is up so high I can't reach it. It is pretty funny. We are grateful we have been able to keep our sense of humor. We would have undertaken the project ourselves - SURE WE WOULD - but our only tool is a Swiss Army Knife. We hope the project is completed by Thanksgiving. It began before Labor Day. One of the major home improvement stores is responsible for this mess. Rebecca - The Kitchen Kettle shopping area is on Rt. 340 in Intercourse, PA. You are quite right the shopping area is relatively new. There are about 15 shops surrounding the Kitchen Kettle facility. Sassie Katie - I was so surprised to hear of someone who lives at Ft. McCoy. I remember it as a wee tiny place in the woods. Before I retired I called on the Postmaster there. You do have a basket shop in Jacksonville, which is closer than Orlando. The shop is located on Park Street, in Orange Park (Jacksonville) at The Sisters Shopping quad. The Sister's is a tearoom. I think the shop is now called the Lady Bug Boutique. One side of the shop is devoted to basketry and they did offer classes. The classes were just a fun way to meet people who like to weave.
