It is cold, brisk but sunny today in mid Michigan. We've been praying for great weather in two weeks for convention. To Cass: We all fly clothespins one time or another. Try cable ties in the electrical department of the hardware store, for those really hard to hold rims. They cost about 1-2 cents each for med. size. Most are one use type, but I hear there are reusable ones out there. But so cheap I don't feel bad with one use. Clothespin rim on temporarily, then go back and use one tie every 3-4inches around the rim. Begin lashing, then cut off tie when you come to it. Works great. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: BASKET SWAP Date: Mon, 25 Oct 1999 07:39:55 -0400 From: "Bren Miller" To: Hi David, I'm enjoying your Weaver's Words tremendously. Have been making teneriffe and pine needle Christmas ornaments lately, and have been extremely frustrated by the quality of raffia I have been able to get locally - shreds, breaks. Any suggestions? Think I will switch to some waxed linen I have on hand for the time being, but prefer the look of the raffia. Thanks. But I wish you a "Happy Belated Birthday" today!!! Thank you for all that you do for us. We would all be a bunch of "basketcases" [literally] without you. A big SMACK from us all. Everybody needs to look at the November edition of Southern Living magazine for the picture of one of Billie Ruth Suddath's baskets that is in the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC. For you folks who don't live down South, maybe some of us could share our pictures with you. Billie Ruth was awarded the North Carolina Living Treasure designation awhile back and she certainly deserves it. Have to run as I'm packing up for my big show this weekend in Elizabeth City. I thought I had "organized" myself pretty good until now. I'm beginning to STRESS!!!!! If any WW folks live in the Northeast part of NC or Southside VA, please come see me!! Angie, my husband, Donnie subscribes to s Dulcimer player's newsletter like this one, and somehow the dulcimer list got on the subject of Kudzu. Here is what one of the answers was to the question on how to plant it and get it to grow. "First you completely clear off one acre square of land. Then you go to the exact center of the acre of land, dig a hole, and insert the kudzu plant. Then run like hell!" It was so prevalent at home, we never really noticed it as kids...we just thought all the barns were supposed to be green and leafy! This seems to be the second conference of its kind, with the last one held in 1991, I think. Seems like that one was not well attended and didn't really do too well. Not the case with this one! There was a limit of 200 attendees and a long waiting list for cancellations. Michael Davis and HGA put on this conference at the lovely facility of Arrowmont Arts and Crafts School, located in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee in Gatlinburg. Everyone took three day long classes and attended lectures, slide shows and panel discussions on a range of basketry topics. One of the things that everyone seemed to be so impressed with was the fact that famous teachers came to attend as students, and everyone was able to rub elbows with each other and discuss any and all basket subjects. The Arrowmont facility is simply wonderful with it's various buildings for classes, dormitories, auditorium and dining room. The food was to die for and the wait staff was very pleasant and helpful. I was really close to a mama bear and her triplets and took two pictures of them, standing very near the back door to our dorm, hope they turn out, I will post them to this site. As far as the teachers go, it was the cream of the crop, most of the teachers were biggie, biggies that have been in the basketry world for twenty years or more. I was in 7th heaven, because I had followed most of their works since the late 70's, through basketry and craft magazines and exhibitions. To meet them and see their work up close and actually talk with them, was an experience I will always treasure. Here is a list of some of the teachers; Judy Olney (who's shaping class I took), Jane Sauer, Leon Niehues, Lissa Hunter, Mary Jackson, Carol Eckert, John Garrett, John McGuire, John McQueen, Joanna Schanz, Dorothy Gill Barnes, Flo Hoppe, and Judy Mulford. Hopefully, I didn't leave anyone out, I don't have my handout information in front of me. There were two basket shows going on in the gallery, one was called American Basketmaking: Tradition & Innovation, which was an invitational and a juried exhibition of American Baskets, called All Things Considered. Both of these shows will be written up in the next issue of Shuttle, Spindle and Dyepot, the HGA magazine you receive with membership. Most of you will recognize many if not all of the participants in these two shows. A few really good things that came out of the conference are 1). A national basketry newsletter, published quarterly, I think 2). A second conference set in Houston, TX 2001 in October 3). Basket makers having a larger presence in HGA and the magazine and 4). The possibility of changing the name of the magazine from Shuttle, Spindle & Dyepot to reflect inclusion of basketry. This was a very emotionally moving conference for those that had been in the biz a long time and also those that had never attended a conference before. There was a very close knit attitude and long periods of time for discussions that you don't get at regular basketry conventions, I guess. This was my first big conference and I was very impressed with what happened there. Please everyone, mark off the time on your calendar to attend the next conference if at all possible, there is no similar type of conference to attend that you will receive so much information and stimulation from. Also, be on the lookout for the Carol Duvall Show on HGTV, the camera crew was there filming the exhibition and should have some pretty good coverage. The announcement on when it will air will be placed in the Shuttle, Spindle & Dyepot (SS&D), so be sure and join up ASAP. As all basket weavers seem to do, I was really excited about buying a basket that was made locally. There were a lot of shops, but one was special. I met a lady named Teresa Green who works in the basket shop at the Kitchen Kettle shopping area. Teresa has been making baskets for many years. Her baskets were in a display of Appalachian crafts at the Smithsonian for over two years. I purchased one of her ribbed baskets. She loves to teach and she is a real people person. She is now making and selling commemorative baskets for 1999. It was such a treat to find "real" baskets -- not just those made in China and imported. So, anyone who is going to be shopping in the beautiful Amish Country of Pennsylvania should try to stop and meet Teresa at the basket shop. She didn't know about Weaver's Words, but she does now. I hope she can find time to participate in this newsletter. She will be a real asset. This was a real treat for us as we have spent months and months working on our house. This was the first time we have taken time away from a very daunting and messy project. I thought it would be fun to remodel and have a new kitchen - YUK!!!!!! I also thought retirement would be lots of play and limited work. Was I ever wrong. I am still trying to find time to weave. My favorite saying has become - "This too shall pass". I can't wait. I don't know how I found time to work. Date: Tue, 26 Oct 1999 13:26:54 -0600 From: "STEPHENSON,KIRSTI (HP-Boise,ex1)" To: "'davidc@iei.net'" Well, first I introduced myself, now, I pass on the results from my very first weaving retreat. I belong to the Snake River Fiber Arts Guild and most, if not all, the members are not basket weavers, more traditional loom weavers. I've never done any loom weaving but admire the work and quality of product that comes off those looms! There were 12 gals in the class. We started at 9:30 with pre-cut reed for a lidded sewing basket. Done all in round reed, twill, twine and 3 rod wale with a braided rim, what a challenge! The instructor, Doris Howell, should be admitted to Sainthood for taking on such a project with inexperienced basket weavers :) Everyone left with a finished basket. It was really great to see all the different shapes and sizes that came out of the class. Mine ended up quite a bit taller than the others (my shapes get a bit out of control :) but I'm still so proud of it. I've never taken classes and never ever attempted to make a lidded basket. It ended up about the shape of a pumpkin (well, I suppose if I dyed it orange it could pass for a pumpkin :) and I sprayed it with instant coffee for that oak look. I've received several nice comments and even had some folks order some for gifts! As a result of meeting Doris and using her supplied reed, I have placed an order with Gratiot Lake Basketry. I was very impressed with the quality of their reed and the price! They will sell wholesale if you are a member of a basket guild AND their retail prices are much lower than most other supply house wholesale prices! If anyone has had experience with them, good, bad, or otherwise, please let me know.
