If anyone is interested you may contact him. I am looking for someone to make large, round, flat plaques (baskets) (it actually looks more like an overgrown hot pad). I work in Las Vegas Nevada at a store that has a southwest theme called Canyonland. I have a client in the area that is opening a casino with a Native American theme. They need about 20 large baskets that have the diameter of 24" and 32". They do not need to bare any weight. They will be set into tabletops and resinned over by 1 1/2 inches of resin. We have been looking for someone to make these baskets. Would this be something you could do for us? If not, do you know of anyone that would be interested in the project? Please email me back with any information you can provide me with or call my office. Choate Basketry List - http://www.corecom.net/~choatepp The dogs are all vaccinated and been moved to their winter lot. The Bulldog (a.k.a. '68 Chevy truck) has been crowned with the "dog box" and waits patiently in the driveway. Wood is piled high on the porch and the last bits of color cling to the skeletons of trees. Alaska prepares to go into it's long winters nap. So where is the white stuff? It's been in the 50's and although we've had lot of precipitation it's been in the liquid form. The good news is we just received some more scrimshaw antler in the mail today. Some really wonderful pieces with wolves, eagles, bear, moose, deer and fish. They vary in size from large that would work great for wall pockets to smaller that would compliment a hen or figure 8 basket. If you have a project in mind for Christmas and really want to make it special this might be an option for you. If your interested in a particular type I'd be happy to send you a photo via email. Tour dates for classes are beginning to firm up. If you are interested in sites and dates please check the web site for more detailed information. Antler TIP: When drilling antler for a basket remember that the angle the hole is drilled at is the angle the reed projects from the basket. In order for your eye to better visualize this use a piece of reed before you drill the hole to see what angle your trying to achieve before you make the cut with the drill. I have had someone 2miles away and in the nearby town 7km away teach after I taught them. They charged less because they didn't think they were good enough to charge more. So far I'm still in "business". In a way I look at it the same as if someone buys my basket and sells it for more money. It is theirs and I got what I asked for it, they may have a better contact list and more opportunity to sell. Sometimes they are interior designers. When I teach, I have in effect "sold" them the knowledge and got paid for it; what they do with it is up to them. A weird philosophy? Maybe but that is how I learned and the old basketweavers who got me started knew that I would be teaching. Maybe they are turning over in their graves now that I have taken it further and written a manual on how to make a willow melon basket, which is the first basket I learned. Perhaps this teaching next door effects folks differently. "Different strokes for different folks" it is said. I hope it doesn't hurt you or anyone else who has this problem. Good topic. I don't think I'll change my thinking at this time but it did make me think which is good for my brain. Date: Wed, 6 Oct 99 14:57:01 -0600 From: rounds@ionet.net To: "David Collins" Yesterday, in the midst of so many many things I had a HUGE box delivered to the door. It was light, the address wasn't one I recognized...so with the kids gathered around we opened it...lo and behold it was a basket! What a basket it is! It's a gathering basket that is huge....it's wonderful! There is a wedgwood blue dyed reed running around it and a wedgwood blue heart attached with hemp....it's lovely! I put it to use IMMEDIATELY with the things I needed to cart around while I got the kids two vehicles out of the shop so they could return to college (home on fall break) we spent two hours waiting in two different car repair spots and I had my new basket filled with the necessary papers, a book, the car keys, etc. It is handy dandy! Today I've got it once again doing it's duty carrying the items I needed to mail, deliver, and return....it couldn't be more perfect or more handy and timely! Thanks go to Diane Regterink....you did yourself proud!!!!!!!!! I love this basket and will have to study it well to figure out how to make one to give a friend....it is a delight to behold AND use! (((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((Diane))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Thanks! You did a super job and we share names though my middle is your first name. (grin) Thanks, Diane! It arrived safe and sound and squeals were heard in our home after I opened it. I've already got it planned for tomorrow...it will carry hand-outs, my class materials, etc. for Bible study. Yahoo! We've been snowed under (figuratively) with my mother-in-love in rehab following a stroke three weeks ago, Japanese guests (from the churches my in-laws began 20 years ago), kids home for college fall break, three of our four vehicles in the shop, etc., etc. This basket was a WELCOME change of pace. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket Swap and an introduction Date: Wed, 6 Oct 1999 17:32:24 EDT From: Maribasket@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net My name is Marianne Barnes, and I am pretty new to WW. I am also the president of our local guild - Upper SC Basketmakers' Guild. I received my basket today from the swap and was just delighted. It was a wonderful basket with a wire handle. It was much like a jelly jar basket but a little larger. It had my colors and goes perfectly in my very country home. It had a raffia bow and heart on the front as decoration. It contained a very fragrant candle. Thank you very much Sue Bajczyk. It was very interesting that the one I sent a basket to lives in MN and the basket I received came from MN. I have worked for too long as a medical illustrator and graphic designer to be bothered by criticism. I probably shouldn't even be giving advise on craft shows anyway as I could sell a basket at a show if I tried. I don't have any trouble in a shop, but I just can't at a show. Lois - about Carolyn's comments on craft shows vs. art shows - I may need to read Carolyn's post again, but I didn't take it as negative at all... I did just re-read it and really have to agree with her. She doesn't say that ALL weavers who do craft show churn out beginning level baskets (by which she means more simply constructed), but she does know of some excellent weavers who do so to be able to see there work at a competitive price with the other crafts. The baskets I make to sell are very different than the ones I give as gifts. I need to be able to make a basket in about 3 hours not 3 days to be able to sell it at a price anyone would pay. That doesn't mean that the basket I made in 3 hours is shoddy, it just means that it is a form that I can weave quickly and doesn't take expensive materials. You should really take a look at Carolyn's post again. I don't think she was trying to be condescending or hurtful with her comments at all. Sarah - about copyright - you don't have to specifically state that the material is copyrighted (is that the right sp?) for it to be so. Anything you create is automatically protected. Adding the copyright notice only helps if you want to pursue someone. Elaine - how exciting you are going to be taking one of my classes. That one is coming up soon, but I think I have everything ready. I look forward to meeting you. James Bamba - weaving in Guam - I took a look at your web site. The baskets are beautiful. What a different tradition you have and some very different forms. Keep up the good work. Maybe it is the change in season's as everyone seems to be on edge lately. Hopefully as the beautiful fall colors start to appear we can step back and smell the crisp air and enjoy the pleasures of fall. I've been a silent member for a few months now and I love every issue that David sends out. I'm a faithful reader and find this a very informative forum. My purpose of writing to the group is to let all fellow weaver know how much I appreciative my basket teacher. I'm fortunate to have Lois Keener for my basket teacher here in Hawaii. I've always loved baskets and had spent quit a bit of money on "L" baskets but thought I would love to learn now to weave myself. I'm a military wife and we have 3 kids and 2 foster. With such a big family I find it extremely hard to get away to spend some time doing something I would really enjoy. Anyway I went and signed up at her class. I've started weaving this May and am faithfully taking classes with Lois. In the 5 months that I have weaned I have written 6 of my own patterns and have learn many techniques from Lois. Lois is a awesome teacher, she gives all of herself to teach and she doesn't hold back any techniques or secrets. Anything I have ever wanted to know she would show me. Below is a copy of a letter from my Swap #6 basket recipient (Diane) and as you read you will see all that Lois Keener has taught me in her classes. Lois my hat off to you, I appreciate you, and I love you very much. You will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have been waiting patiently (not) and I was so pleasantly surprised when I heard the UPS man pull up Tues. night. He had been there just the day before and I was hoping he would leave 2boxes (one was supplies), but he didn't so the next day I just knew it would be my basket. But when I picked it up it was so heavy, I thought it couldn't be a basket. I quickly went and got my scissors and opened the box. There was my beautiful basket. It is a market basket about 12"x8" and is wove around a 8x12 pegged swing D handle. The sides are receded and the border is a BEAUTIFUL double-braided border. I've never done this particular border and don't know the correct name but considering the time it takes just to make a Gretchen border, I can only imagine the time you have into this basket. And to top it all off (as if the basket wasn't enough!) the Scott's barbecue, Mt. Olive pickles and the Guido's salsa was fabulous. I got into the pickles and salsa that night and uses the barbecue tonight. They are all great! I think the salsa is probably one of the best I've ever tasted. Do they mail order? You are too kind Ingrid and I can't thank you enough. I hope everything gets back to normal soon after Floyd and the rains. Our prayers are with you. I have parent's day in my son's class tomorrow and then I'm going to start setting up for this weekend's show. It is an old 2-story barn and I can set up all week and don't have to tear down until the Monday after. That makes for a much less stressful weekend. The atmosphere is great there and really gets people in the buying mood. Well, need to go weave a basket. Can't wait until the next swap. I love these things! Classes have started and even though they are nowhere near filled, the enthusiasm of the weavers is certainly encouraging. It's the best when you see the "light bulb" go on. I've gotten the most awesome addition to my store. She's a 4-month-old white Himalayan/Persian with the sweetest disposition and her name is Willow. Sometimes she sleeps in the window display and often has more visitors than I do. My brother provides a house for Willow's parents and I've had to give him a key to the store so that he can go by & visit her. Mark, my husband, has been invited to Germany & they're willing to pay my way also so we're going in a couple of weeks. Between friends & family (they are so great) filling in, the store will be open for most of the time that we're gone. I've been trying to find out if there are any Basket-related things to see. We are going to be in Essen which is near Dusseldorf. I've heard that there is a Basket Museum in Michelau but I can't find Michelau in my world atlas. Does anyone have any idea where this is or know of anything in particular that I could go see? Went to NCBA West this past weekend and had a blast. As much as I like teaching, I really prefer to just make baskets. Everyone up there was so nice. I had classes with Kathy Libby, Joel Simpson & Dolores Von Rosen. I stayed over on Saturday evening & made up one of Pattie Simmon's baskets in my room. Our family softball team won the summer league but we came in third for the summer tournament and we're now into the second week of Fall Ball - GO HUNTERS. Enough chit-chat for now. We had a long day and there it was sitting on my front porch to greet me. Denise calls it "what I was in the mood for" basket. It is a beautiful round to oval basket, quite large with space dyed reed and seagrass for accent, very fallish. I have hauled that basket around all over the place showing it off to friends and now it is in my den filled with my current knitting projects. Sure got rid of a whole pile of ugly bags. I just have to smile every time I look at it because it is so well made and so pretty. Thank you Denise. As I told you in my note, since we are sister Carolinians I hope we can meet one of these days. What fun that would be. Again, thank you for brightening my day. Around here we still need a lot of that. Ingrid Q. To someone in NP OH, I do hope your basket has arrived by now. If I figured right it should have reached you yesterday but you never can tell. (You forgot to send me your e-mail address) The pattern is from Penland Pottery Basket by Billie Ruth Sudduth. It's a large round basket of natural round reed with navy weaved in it. The shape of this basket is so perfectly round. Judy mentioned that she has been weaving for only 9 months. GREAT JOB!!!!! Judy, you are blessed with a wonderful gift and I wish you all the best. I agree that every basket is unique in it's own way. I personally love to change a basket, not that I don't like the true pattern but because we all weave differently. I will truly treasure this basket! Thank You! David, You do a WONDERFUL job! Thank you for giving all of us a place to gather together. There is our conventions but not everyone can meet each other. Here on WW's we can sit down, listen and write to everyone and we don't have to leave our house. If we see something we don't like or we feel that we did to say our part it's OKAY! I like to read about up coming events, new shops, and a place to find friends. It's all here on WW's and I want it to stay as it is. I want to "Thank" everyone who has headed a basket swap as this is a wonderful way to meet someone. This has been my second swap and I am looking forward to the next one! It must have been hard to hold all together to weave it, but she did a great job; She put fall flowers in it but didn't glue them so I can change the flowers with the seasons. Thanks so much, Carolyn. Some time ago, someone on this list said she collects cookbooks. Would she please email me? Many of the students I have taught tell me they just can't get the same colors as I do. I have come to the conclusion it has got to have something to do with my well water. I take HOT tap water, add 3 big glops of vinegar, and then add the Rit. Stir well, like Jell-O to dissolve well. Put reed in and let sit for 20 min. for deep colors, less for lighter colors. Rinse with Cold water very well! Let dry or use right away. But whatever you do make SURE to run it very well through a towel. Don't over spray or dampen your basket when weaving. If you have a lot of color or dark colors turn the basket upside down when you spray. I know a lot of weavers say don't let the reed sit in the water for that long. I am usually moving it around or turning it over and I usually do at least one pound at a time. Leaving the reed for this long works well for me. Use whatever time frame you feel comfortable with. I hope this helps you and any other new weavers that may have been wondering about this subject. I have used other dyes but always come back to Rit. It is readily available in my area and they offer a lot of colors. But like I said, I really do feel our well water (whatever minerals may be in it) has a big affect on how my colors have turned out. Good luck!! Any questions, well, you know where to find me! Ellen- just trying to do my part as a mother/citizen/weaver to get this country back on track to GOOD moral, values, and characters for all of our sakes, not to mention the younger adults who may be reading our forum. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: river cane Date: Sun, 10 Oct 1999 00:39:43 -0400 From: Angelique Raptakis To: davidc@iei.net Hi.
