Date: Sun, 26 Sep 1999 23:25:49 -0400 From: Mary Berrus To: davidc@iei.net Hi all, I just wanted to share with you all about my weekend. This weekend I sold baskets at the Naples, NY Grape Festival. And it was GREAT!! This was my first time selling anywhere. There were 250 vendors there, and it was all juried. I won the "Best of Show" in the fiber arts category. Which was area l BIG thrill and surprise LOL!! They gave me a nice ribbon, certificate and a gift basket from Widmer Winery. They judge you on your display and your product. I used hay bales in the display and quilts, corn stalks, pumpkins and potted mums and dried flowers. It looked beautiful. My grape pie baskets were a huge hit, sold all of them :) Just thought I would tell you all. Now, it is time for bed, it has been alooooong weekend Mary Berrus %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: aloha Date: Sun, 26 Sep 1999 17:38:49 -1000 From: The Keener Clan To: davidc@iei.net Aloha from sunny (finally) Honolulu, Yesterday was the day of the great treasure sale for the group going to Kansas City in 2 weeks (I can*t believe I*m coming back to the real world in 2 short weeks! I am sooo excited) and it poured all day... Tony, get back up on your soapbox. I agree with you 100%. There is nothing like going to a fair and seeing an entire booth of the same shade of stain baskets. They DO all blend together. I think what drives me even crazier is someone taking 6 baskets to a fair...and making 20 of each one and lining them up in rows. It looks likes hopping at K-Mart... Speaking from lots of craft fair experience, variety sells. People want to get something they think is meant just for them. Besides, I couldn*t weave several of one thing--just can*t do it. And about advertising on WW--I*m straddling the fence. I would like to see guilds and conventions and basket gatherings discussed on WW, but I*m not fond of individuals advertising their books, etc. And it doesn*t bother me if someone says something kind about their supplier. It is neat to know what people think and what sort of treatment they get from a basket supplier. I*m having a problem with a person coming to class and then going home (not too far from where I teach) and teaching her neighbors the same basket.--and she isn*t teaching for free, folks. Can I do anything about it...no, I can*t. But I personally don*t believe it is ethical and it shows a great lack of creativity on her part.....and how did I find this out? Two of her neighbors told me. She hasn*t even had the courage to tell me. But she will suffer in the long run as other weavers will not trust her--I certainly don*t-- nor will they share with her. One of my fall fairs was moved--so the weekend I return from Kansas City, I will have 2 fairs--and I*m weaving like crazy in the meantime. Bert, I can*t wait to meet you! Joanne wants me to take pictures, so be prepared... aloha nui loa, Lois %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Events Calendar Date: Mon, 27 Sep 1999 08:28:27 EDT From: Wickrwoman@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Remember for all of you that teach classes or are organizers of workshops and conventions, that David has an "Events Calendar" right here on his site. In my personal opinion, I think you should post there but also mention it here on the newsletter. Many times we forget to look at the other "buttons" on his site. I think the same is true for the advertising of what we have for sale on his "Classified" site. I'm sorry it is coming so late, but was because of some administrative problems they incurred. The show is called "Contemporary Quilt and Basket Invitational" and opened September 11, and runs through October 10, at The Guenzel Gallery and Peninsula Art School in Fish Creek, Wisconsin. There are 15 quilts, submitted by; Gerry Forzaretz, Marla Hallabough, Patty Hawkins, Melody Johnson, Susan Shie & James Accord, and Lynn Zetzman, representing Ohio, Colorado, Indiana and Wisconsin. The 20 baskets were submitted by; Jane Herrick, Nora Loduha, Janice Rowland, Cathryn Peters and Fran Chenez. Interesting to note that all the basket makers except myself, are from Wisconsin. If you live in the area or are traveling and taking in all the beauty of the turning leaves in Door County, be sure and stop by for a look at some exquisite workmanship. I did get a few pictures from the gallery and will be posting them on David's "Basket Pictures" later today. You must be an extremely patient and caring person. We really appreciate your hard work! Rib Basket: Ok, 10 years ago, I vowed never to make another rib basket. It's not that I don't like them; quite the contrary; I love them and admire anyone who has the patience and talent to make them. They take ME twice as long to make than reed baskets so I determined not make any more. Until today. I saw a CREALAGH BASKET that I really want to make!!! For those of you not familiar with them they are to hold wool when spinning and originated in Scotland. Since I demonstrate spinning at a local working museum, I thought this would be great to have in my Spinning Room. Also, they can be used to hold yarn when you are knitting or crocheting [another use I plan to give it]. Does anybody know of a pattern for this basket and where I can get it? The one I looked at was approximately 13"w x 11"h. and had God's Eyes on both sides. I want one this size or I could even use one a little larger. Floyd: We've survived Floyd here in Wilson, NC but did have a lot of flooding in the low lying areas near creeks and small tributaries. Our house was surrounded by water on all sides up the 2nd step on the front porch. Water just missed going into my studio by 1/2". If the rains had not stopped when they did, we would have been in trouble. Our neighbors to the north and east are in extremely bad shape. So many have lost everything they owned and the bad part is, that no one had flood insurance because this land has never flooded before. Only by our donations to relief organizations such as the Salvation Army and Red Cross, etc. are these folks going to be able to rebuild their lives. Please remember them in your hearts and prayers. They are everywhere. Just outside my sisters door she has long needle pines on a vacant lot and I could fill my trunk up in no time flat. She lives in Fayetteville. People in NC use pine needles for mulching around their trees and flowerbeds. You can also buy bales of pine needles from a nursery. I'm not sure how long the ones in bales are. Also they have the biggest pinecones I have ever seen. Good luck on your pine needle search I'll be down that way Oct 22-23 for a weekend weave at MT. OLIVE College. Can't hardly wait!! I just received the most gorgeous basket from Kathy Henn! It is a twill-weave basket and I'm so tickled with it! She does wonderful work, and the color is perfect for my kitchen. Thanks, Kathy, and thanks, Bert, for doing the swap. When do we start again?? I'm sending a basket to someone in Tennessee tomorrow, and I hope you like this one as much as I do the one Kathy made for me. I meant to mail it today, but we played hooky and went to the Bloomsburg Fair instead. It was our first time there, and a lot of fun! I am sending pictures of both baskets to David so everyone can see them. I was so excited this afternoon when I checked my mail... my swap basket arrived today from Helen Startweather in Kingwood, Texas! I absolutely love it! Helen, thank you so very, very much! The pattern is called "Country Lunch Box" and it's made from natural flat and flat-oval reed with Shaker tape handles. It measures about 8 1/2" high and 7" wide. With it she included a beautiful napkin to line the basket and a cookbook entitled "Some Like it Hot - The Climate, Culture & Cuisine of South Texas." Of all things she could have included with this basket, the cookbook is perfect! No matter where I have lived or vacationed, I always pick up a cookbook or two along the way. I know I'm running a little behind schedule here... but my basket will be leaving for its destination in Indiana before the Thursday deadline! Thanks again, Helen, for such a special basket and gift. And thanks to Bert for hostessing this swap... she has done an excellent job! We have a show going every week-end starting this week-end......so I hope I'm around & survive to read the next posting of WW.... I just wanted to write a note about the changes on weavenet. com. Evelyn Vega sold the site to my son this last month and so there will be a lot of changes...some good and probably some that people will not like...but at least he's trying to keep the site alive. Evelyn was going to stop doing it because she wasn't making any money continuing it. She was paying a person $40.00 a hour to program it for her and found that it wasn't worth doing any more. I told her that I loved the site and convinced her to sell it but I didn't think my son would end up buying it . Well he did and he's learning a lot!!! I'm having more fun telling him what I want from this site and bossing him around with all my crazy ideas. If you have any ideas on how to make it great place to visit, please please e mail us to help us along this journey!!! Right now one of our biggest fun things to do is feature a basket maker of the month...Of course you probably know who is the first one ....( for lack of any other face. !) but my term is almost over and we already have another really super person to take my place. Her name is Sharon Dugan. She's a League of NH member , worked for Martha Weatherbee , just quit her real job and is starting her own business. She's really such a nice person too. Her pages will be on site soon and you should see them when you can find the time to tap in. If I've got my information strait...My son is working up a site and pages for a "Basket maker of the month" for e for anyone that would like it, in hopes that they will decide to stay with us as an advertised. That sounds cool enough huh??? It's been too much fun creating these pages for these girls and seeing what they do. It opens up a whole new world for me helping my son finding such interesting ladies (& men *) for these " Basket makers of the month "pages. I've been so excited with this that I'm going to call Martha Weatherbee, Steven Zey, etc. I think we would all love to hear about how they got started and see there beautiful work.!!! I hope that you will e-mail us with any positive ideas so we can make this site a fun place to visit in this big web world. In response to Pat who chose to personally e-mail me. Do Not Write Me At Home to criticize my thoughts. I used Restoration, Willowe's and Weavers Stain as an example of who do NOT use this information source as a way to advertise. The announcement of conventions and classes certainly is good for reaching all people. But, if I choose, as an experienced weaver, to be of an opinion different from yours DO NOT WRITE ME AT HOME. Certainly there is room for debate on this issue. And certainly there are people who don't use it enough and those who overuse it. But it's not "People Like Me" who are holding back everyone else. It was an opinion. Asked for. And given. My opinion clearly designated and just as valid as yours. Sign me - royally pissed off in Midland. We unfortunately have not been blessed with the white stuff this far south but it's presence is in the air. The dogs are howling more and once again are raring to go and get off those chains for awhile. We, on the other hand are still scrambling to get the wood in and get all our fall chores done before we get blanketed and retire to chores indoors. A couple more cities for the tour in 2000 are now included on the web site. The Tri-State Basketry Guild of Blountville, TN has asked to host a class. For more information you may contact Barbara Holt at bholt@usit.net. Port City Basket makers out of Wilmington, NC have asked to host a class as well. You can contact Fran Steidel at paca@coastalnet.com for more information. On a last note, I do apologize for the scrimshaw photos not appearing on the web site. I've come to the realization that even though I do know a little bit I don't know enough to build a professional web site. Therefore, currently I'm seeking out those that do so the situation can be rectified. Until then I can send you photos via email to view what is available if you like. Date: Tue, 28 Sep 1999 20:40:46 -0500 From: "Kathie" To: "David Collins" Directed to Kristin in Midland. Get a grip on life Kristin. How horrible that you are "Annoyed & Weary" from reading personal advertising and promotions printed in Weavers Words. I don't recall any rules about what can and cannot be said or sent in to Weavers Words, and I've been here from the beginning! Yes, we went through the discussion about prayers and religion awhile back and there's always the famous skultle-butt over copyrighting, that actually was very educational, but come on everything on here lately has been wonderful. Including the rules for basket swaps. Sure there are places on this site to advertise, thanks to David, but if you don't have the time or you don't know how to find them, then what's the big deal about just saying what you want to say. I just love all the input from everyone, no matter if it relates to basketweaving or someone's new grandchild. It's all about life and learning. You know there are really horrible things like the pain and loss that people in South & North Carolina are going through right now since the hurricanes went through. There must be hundreds of Weaver Words readers that have Cancer or have had open heart surgery or a loved one die recently that aren't complaining about too much too read here or about there problems. Your last line about "Yes, I can just pass through those messages" is the best thing you could do. Just let it go. Life's too short for such little picky things. To the thousands that read and write in, keep up the good work. Things have been really interesting here lately and peaceful. Let's keep it that way!! Kathie from Michigan, where today was just perfect in the weather dept!! Thanks for all your hard work David!! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% If for any you would ever like to cancel your subscription, simply send me a message with "unsubscribe" as your subject.
