There were only 2basket makers this year, one was Leon Niehues and the other an Asian man who made ribbed baskets using date fruit stalks. I had thought about getting another Niehues basket, but all the ones that caught my eye were very similar in size and shape to the one I have and for $500-600 I didn't want 2 of the same things. I have seen the ribbed basket maker before at the St. James Art Fair in Louisville, KY and while they are interesting and nicely made they don't do much for me personally. On Sunday I went to a craft fair at a local park. Of course the things there were significantly less expansive than at the art fair. I bought a couple of small items and looked at 2 basket makers' booths. They both had nice baskets that were very reasonably priced (meaning I wouldn't make them for that little). Both booths suffered from the same problem though and with all of the talk about staining recently I wanted to bring this up. Every basket in each booth used the exactly the same shade of stain. When you looked at the baskets they all blurred into each other, your eye couldn't pick out the different shapes and styles. It is so easy to at least vary the intensity of the color by thinning down the stain with mineral spirits if it is oil based or with water if it uses that base. This is why I cringe when I hear people talk about using an industrial sprayer to stain a whole crop of baskets. I know it takes a little longer to stain each basket separately, but I just think you defeat the whole look of individually crafted baskets. If you are going to have multiple baskets of the same style I just think they have to be stained differently or they start looking mass-produced. Ok, I am off my soap box now. If anyone is still left reading I have a question. I am going to North Carolina in November and would like to collect some nice long pine needles. I will be coming via Williamsburg, VA and staying in Oriental which is about half way down the coast. Will I even be able to find any or will it be as easy as stopping along the side of the highway and collecting them? Happy weaving, Tony Stubblefield St. Louis http://www.tetranet.net/users/deanandtony/baskets.htm %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Ditto Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 17:18:40 -1000 From: Joanne Howard To: "Collins, David" Hi Everyone, I agree with Cathryn Peters. I think it is awesome to let others know about classes and guild etc. If I lived on the mainland and had the opportunity to find another class in another state, this would be the place for the info. I don't know how else I would know. I have also learned about new suppliers and all sorts of techniques from people on this digest. All weavers are just a wealth of information when asked the right questions. Thanks to all that contribute any info at all!!!! You are all awesome. I sent my swap basket out yesterday, so someone, somewhere will be a happy camper this weekend. It was definitely made with a lot of Aloha. I had so much fun putting time into this. I am not the most creative person around, so it was a challenge to come up with something that I thought one of you might like. I really enjoyed putting it together and look forward to future swaps. Bert, I thought the information you gave out was great. The swap directions were easy to follow and understand. It was easy to follow the rules!! Thanks so much for the time it must have taken to put this together. Well off to weave and paint. Aloha, Joanne %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 3 I. 49 Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 07:24:25 -0400 From: "Susan Tripp" To: "David Collins" Hello Weavers! Just reporting in after our antler basket and peanut basket classes with Carol Antrim from Indiana. Everyone seemed to have such a nice time - and oh those baskets! They all came out so differently and each one was beautiful. It was really interesting to see how each weaver chose to work with her antler. Maybe I'll send David some pics for the WW site. My favorite was her peanut basket. It was woven so uniquely, and I learned about four new things that I had never seen before. Carol is a great teacher (she's teaching now at the Basket Gathering in Ohio) and we had several requests to bring her back to NY (I'm working on it Carol!). What's next for our neck of the woods? Susan Reed-Fanfoni will be teaching her Folk Art Basketry on October 9 in Ithaca. Susan is originally from Ithaca but now resides in Virginia. She's been teaching and designing/creating her own patterns for about 10 years now. Send me an e-mail if you'd like further details! There is a new lurker out there named Karen, Karen has taken several classes from me and is a wonderful weaver. She really shines, and is very interested. Her baskets come out lovely. I had my second class at the YMCA and everyone came out with a beautiful basket. I have some Children in this class, one is 14, on is 10 and this time I had a 12-year-old. I couldn't believe it, they were the most polite, well behaved and wanted to be there, not like some other classes I have had. These guys are welcome in any of my classes. I know this is the exception not the rule, I have had kids who don't want to be there, and is hard. The 14-year-old has been taking classes for 2 1/2 years, does some of her own things, but asks if her ideas will work, (they always do) the others have made 3 baskets each (2 with me) they say I really teach "GOOD" because they can understand me and it is more fun to be in my class. They are jewels, never a peep, head down and they are off, to make you guessed it another beautiful basket. I made room in a full class for 1 more the 10-year-old because she is so enthusiastic. Asked if I would ever offer that class again, she wanted to make it so bad before Christmas, how could I say no, so we have 1 extra for the next class and all of the regulars too. I love this job, it is great. Well enough rambling for now, have to start packing up for the Apple Fest. It is 100% hand made, no exceptions, or you are asked to leave. I think the constant barrage of individuals "selling" through Weavers Words is a bit off. There are other areas to do this. I have long been a customer of Restoration Products both locally and as a mail order customer. I could go on and on at the personal attention and help and service I have received from Marilyn and Ourka and even Bob. Willowe's is an outstanding company that recently has gone overboard to ship and send some of the one-of-a-kind basket attachments THEY carry. Do we hear about THEIR service and sales. No. Only through extreme prompting has Weavers Stain commented on Weavers Words, and that was to give actual advice on their product. Dollie feels this is not necessarily the arena for "hawking their wares". They have a web page. If it is to tell people of upcoming conventions, then list on the web pages already in existence and say - "Go to such and such web site for more information" Not the price of each class or color of note card and on and on. It seems you are trying to justify the overuse of advertising by saying you are really "helping all of us". You are really hawking your product over the Internet through Weavers Words and "expect" our friendship to allow it. Time and time and time again. So what? You're right. My buying power is not that mighty. But that's how I feel. Yes, I can just pass through those messages, but they are getting more frequent. The west coast is not too swift with reporting what goes on this side of the country. It took 2 extra hrs. to get home from the airport due to flooding but I did make it. Thank-you so much for all the items. I am not a lover of fall but her basket is so beautiful that I changed my mind. She calls it a "Colorful Twill Fall Basket." She has even attached some colorful tiny wooden leaves, which set the basket off nicely. I didn't have anything like it so I was thrilled to add it to my collection. My family room is now being adorned with fall accents. She also sent a bottle of sauce that is evidently used quite often in the south. We can't wait to try it. I grill quite often so we will try this weekend. Cindy also included a linen bag which I will use at school to show what flour sacks used to look like years ago. It isn't burlap (it's much nicer) but it will still give my students the general idea. Thanks so much, Cindy. I for one like the listing of classes. I would not have known about a Betty Curry class in Bloomington had I not read it here. I will travel several hours away to take a class but if you aren't on the mailing then you have no way off knowing who offers what. And for all of you who are weaving away since school has started, keep weaving. I am envious. I haven't been able to make a basket since school started. School and kids just keep me too busy so I am looking forward to the first break already so I can weave again. Basket swap coordinators thank you for the time you all have been putting in for the swaps. It is truly a rewarding and enjoyable experience. When we were there this summer, my husband offered to get one for me for my birthday (Smart guy - he wouldn't have to shop and it would have pleased me a great deal) But no, I said we're going to Olde Town to look at canoes on the way home - we'll stop at their shop that's listed on the flyers. Guess what - no shop! It's a Basketmaker's Alliance with their PO Box in Old Towne. The folk at the Old Towne Canoe Outlet didn't know of a shop so they suggested the Penobscott Reservation that is near by. I had a great time talking to the Curator of the museum right over the bridge. They have a wonderful collection of old and contemporary baskets (and more) on display. He also knew of one of the local basketmakers who we JUST missed - she drove by as we pulled in! The upshot of this long tale is that I did get an address that you could contact them about purchasing a basket.....The Maine Indian Basket Makers Alliance, PO Box 3253, Old Towne, Maine 04468 or they could tell you more about their history. (They also had some great posters that I've been meaning to ask about) We also just missed a gathering of the Alliance members that would be held over the 4th of July in or near Bar Harbor. Missed connections everywhere but the address has been on the fridge all summer so it's good to share it. Hope this finds you all well and weaving!
