I am so excited In a couple of days the basket I wove for the swap will be delivered to someone in MA. Hope she will be there to accept it. I don't know if she works out side the home. Hope everyone in the NC, SC, Atlanta and FL. are taking cover it looks like this one is a very big one. I can't believe there is another one right behind it. I have only seen hurricanes on TV. I don't care to see one in person. You all take care of your selves. I will keep everyone in my prayers. Can't remember who all is going from there though, sorry. It was suggested on WW that we all wear a red ribbon, but the Naturals List has suggested that they wear purple, so I guess I will be sporting both ribbons! Can't wait to meet everyone and put a face with the names. Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 20:52:39 -0500 From: cjc619 To: davidc@iei.net Hi David and all WW members! I have a little story to tell that is basically a message of praise to you, David, all swap coordinators and participants, and all the other special people who make up this fun and interesting group. You have not only provided valuable information concerning the art of basket-making/weaving, but relief from everyday stresses as well! I've really enjoyed meeting people in this group and writing back and forth to several of you! This was all brought more strongly to my attention last night when I stopped by our monthly guild meeting. I just happened to have my "Beachcomber" basket along with me that Bert Comstock taught me how to make last month. As soon as I walked in the door, one of the women in our guild grabbed the basket and exclaimed, "You made one of these too!?" She looked the basket over and was admiring it. (Two other women in the guild also made one and I think brought them to show last night). Then she turned to her good friend and said, "We have to get involved with that internet group!!!" I hope they decide to signup! Thanks everyone for all you do! Someone recently sent in a the 800 number for a company that sells the beads for Patti Simmons' Victorian planter. I used David's search engine but so far no help there as the postings seems to be from 1998 and this one was in the last few months of 99. Would the person who sent in that info please be kind enough to repeat it to me privately as I need it yesterday. Thanks so much for your help. I'm having a hard timefinding11/64 smoked flat oval. I recently purchased the pattern "A Day in the Park" (which did not include a photo if anyone could help) but this pattern calls for 11/64 smoked fo. It seems to be a difficult reed to find but I really like the way it looked in the finished product. Also, I'm looking for a provider of a spoke weight. Shipping will cost more than the weight I imagine. There are really no basket shops in the Chicago area -strange -such a big city with no basket shops - how did I ever survive? Thank you again for your great service. My prayers to all our friends in the way of the storms, God Bless and keep you well. It's so beautiful. I've not seen too many round baskets up close and personal, and it's so pretty, the God's eyes, the twilling on the rim, and the handle with it's braid. It's just plain beautiful. I think that I know exactly what I'm going to use it for. I had made some really pretty fire starter pine cones a couple weeks ago, and I'm going to hang the basket on a hook under our mantle and fill it with my fire starters. Doing these basket swaps has been so incredible for me. I am truly humbled at the talent that the folks on this list have. Thank you Marilyn for the beautiful basket, and thank you Bert for hosting this swap! -Katy %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Twinning vs. chase weave. Date: Thu, 16 Sep 1999 08:24:20 -0400 From: dan hautzinger | Block address To: Weavers Words After making many baskets for my craft shows this fall I have a question, why do some wooden base patterns call for chase weave and some call for twinning, does it matter which one you use? Just curious, I do both and actually like both equally well. Also on Judy Richmond's vase basket, how many do you overlap, there isn't really room for 4 or you will be on a corner, will 2 do? Well my first class at the local YMCA went very well, I had 11studentsand everyone left with a very nice basket. I was quite pleased. I also Have a local church group coming to my work shop area to make a basket in October, there are 8-10 people coming. If they enjoy the group, there are 9 more groups from the church, their women's group who may be interested. So classes are looking up. This weekend is the Pork festival. I have 206 baskets made and am very happy with the variety. We lost our hard drive and all the stored information. I am hoping someone will send me the sites for the free patterns again, and the information on how to make the groove in wooden bases. Thank you Gretchen Where the days are cooler and the cats and dog are much friskier %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weaver's Words From: "Jeff & Diana French" | Block address To: Date: Thu, 16 Sep 1999 07:28:18 -0000 Hi Everyone! Hope all that are in the path of Floyd are doing OK. They are predicting it to hit way up here in NJ too. Hopefully, by then, the winds will have died down. Helen Schwartz - Hello there - a new NJ weaver - I love it! I too live in NJ - about a 1/2 hour south of you at McGuire AFB. There is a guild you can join - it's the Penn Jersey Basketry Guild. It covers much of NJ and eastern Pennsylvania. If you would like, I could send you a copy of our last newsletter which also has information on Membership. You can privately e-mail me at dsfrench@rcn.com with your mailing address. I've noticed a lot of you have already finished your swap baskets and have them in the mail. Guess I better get to work. I know what I'm weaving for my buddy, now to get to it so she won't have to wait too long. :) Happy Weaving to all Diana French in very wet (boy, we really needed it) Southern New Jersey %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket Protectors, etc. From: "Karen Lee Livsey" | Block address To: Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 23:56:14 -0700 Hi David, I have so enjoyed reading all of the stories and helpful information since I have been receiving WW but have not been able to get up enough courage to jump in and ask a question myself--till now I have always loved baskets and never in my wildest dreams ever thought that I would be able to ever make them myself but have been doing so for 2 1/2 years. There is one thing that I like about the Longaberger baskets that I have not been able to find for our baskets and this is the plastic protectors. Does anyone know if there is anyone that offers them? Also, I stain my baskets with Minwax and I like it but would really like to find a color more honey/golden. Similar to the Longaberger color because I have had requests for that color and like it myself. One last question, I normally use a brush to stain my baskets but I used the stain spray (Minwax) and just loved it however, since I sell baskets, that is much more expensive for me to use. I was wondering if anyone ever tried to use a spray bottle w/the liquid stain and if so, did they have any luck. I have considered trying to use a Wagner airless sprayer but I am afraid it would be too powerful of a spray. Has anyone ever tried to use the Power Stainer by Wagner? I got spoiled by using the Minwax spray because it goes on so much faster and the baskets look so pretty I think because they don't get as saturated as when a brush is used. Well---I guess I made up for lost time, didn't I? Sorry for taking up so much time and space but hope someone has some suggestions for me. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: (no subject) Date: Thu, 16 Sep 1999 22:53:42 EDT From: CHobbsNANA@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Glad you got system working again! For some reason I'm thinking that he found it a K-mart or Target for $12 and it fit the camera perfectly and was a lot cheaper that what you could buy from Sony. Can anyone remember or possibly whoever it was that made the post let me know something? I've recently purchased the Sony camera and am really pleased with it but bear in mind I'm still a real novice. It's great on basket details and user friendly. If anyone could help, I'd really appreciate it. Feel free to e-mail me personally. My brother-in-law has offered to make bases for me out of cherry. I need to know what the name of the piece for his router would be for cutting the slots. Also where would you find this piece or is there even a place I can order one. Has anyone ever used tiger-maple for bases or handles? Thanks ahead for the help.
