Thanks David. For those of you who have joined up since we explained how our natural materials list works, here's the relevant information: I have started a small, unsophisticated mailing list over here in Oxford for weavers who are interested in the use of natural materials. We loosely define this as willow, vines, barks, grasses, pine needles, cattails, etc. Although rattan cane does come originally from a plant source, we prefer to discuss working with this standardized material in other forums such as WW. Here's the important part. There are different places for sending subscription requests and sending messages to the list. Please DO NOT send messages to baskets@maillist.ox.ac.uk asking to be subscribed to our list. This clutters everyone's inbox and makes a lot of extra work for me. If you want to subscribe or unsubscribe, please follow these very simple instructions. Send an e-mail message to MAJORDOMO@maillist.ox.ac.uk. The message text should read exactly 'subscribe baskets' you don't need the quotes. To unsubscribe, it is simply 'unsubscribe baskets' as your message text. As I'm going on vacation, please send any questions on how to do all this to boitnotl@sensible-net.com our list is fun and we keep the discussion to weaving with naturals. We do not allow any kind of personal sniping, e-mail virus warnings, etc. Our discussion began with a primary focus on weaving, preparing, gathering willow, but we now also deal with a huge range of gathered materials, from inner bark to fish skin. Any questions before the 20th of September, and you can e-mail me directly. Hope you enjoy. --Rob %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: This and That Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1999 10:52:06 +0000 From: Tony Stubblefield or Dean Meredith To: David Collins/Weavers Words Hello, Leigh in Laurinburg - I will try to send in some more pictures to David. Today is slightly overcast and would be perfect for me to set up outside and photograph some new baskets, but I have a wedding to go to this afternoon. While I hate to ask for cloudy weather on the weekend maybe tomorrow will be the same. In the mean time I have a web site devoted to my basket weaving and collecting. You can see dozens of my baskets there. The address is: http://www.tetranet.net/users/deanandtony/baskets.htm I am co-chairing a charity event in a couple of weeks and we are running around like crazy trying to get last minute things done. Hopefully when that settles down I can get back to weaving. I am teaching a Nantucket jewelry basket in early October and I have to get all of the materials prepared. I also am going to have to start Christmas presents pretty soon! I can't believe that fall is basically almost here. Well, I need to run to the dry cleaners to pick up my suit from last weeks wedding otherwise I am going to look a little funny in my shorts and a T-shirt. Take care and happy weaving, Tony St. Louis http://www.tetranet.net/users/deanandtony/baskets.htm %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: 'Naturals' communications Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1999 08:00:52 -0400 From: Rebecca Ladew To: David Collins David: Please include me, and my Sister, Jennie, baweaver6@webtv.net, in the list of people who would like to receive the 'Naturals' communications. I am a brand new weaver and have chosen to do antler baskets as my "thing". Public thanks go out to Nan Gorbics, Cathryn Peters, Jo Hoersten, and Jill Choate. Their help and encouragement is boundless! Believe it or not I have finished seven baskets and am working on more. Next up: learning to dye the reed. Get ready for more questions folks! I've been a silent observer for quite a while and I must say this site is, in my kids terms, "way cool". David I'm sure that the time you invest is tremendous. Basket photos are all great. To those of you who ask about basket dye storage, if you use vinegar in your dye, try putting it back into the vinegar jugs as you empty them. I want to invite everyone to stop by our site and feel free to leave comments, or questions on the bulletin board as well. Let us know what you think. We know the catalogue is now 1/2missing and it will have to be repaired, we lost it at one of the down times when we had a storm. http://home.wirefire.com/crownest I hope at sometime in the future to be involved in one of these wonderful swaps. I would like to sell them for $15.00. There are at least 30 patterns in my pile, and several very good books. I'm not selling them because they are bad patterns but because I don't have the room to keep them anymore. Some of the books are thin books that I put into plastic sleeves so that I could keep them with my other patterns, and keep them from getting all yucky from the water. If you are interested in buying my used patters, let me know at gaulrich@alum.mit.edu Thanks! -Katy %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: swappin! I do need to ask if you can give me the e-mail of the present swap co-ordinator. I tried to search past lists but just can't find the reference and the term with swap brings up much more than I need. Thanks, Barb Foster %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: swap baskets (plural!) Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 16:05:44 -0400 From: "Ingram" To: Hello David and fellow weavers, What a great day! I mailed my basket off this afternoon, feeling very proud that I was so prompt this time. No sooner had I come home from the post office, when I noticed a package on my step! My BASKETS had arrived! Dot Hutchins sent me the MOST GORGEOUS baskets, one a lovely twill trinket bowl (Patti Hawkins pattern) that I dare not put anything in-because it would cover a beautiful pattern. The other is a great swing handle round basket, a combination of two styles, in colors just perfect for my house! The details are wonderfully woven, and both are delightful. What was even more bizarre, is that I discovered a zillion things that Dot and I have in common. Very small world, indeed. Hope you all have as great a swap partner as I had. Good luck, keep those noses pressed to the windows looking for the postman! Leigh In Laurinburg, where Dennis was just a menace compared to the way Floyd is looking. Pray for us! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Swap arrived Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 17:19:06 EDT From: FosterBA@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net (david collins) Thanks to Kathey Ervin I am the proud owner of a "Choctaw style elbow basket". The basket is made from cedar I believe. Kathey says she works mostly in "naturals" and I can see that she knows her techniques. Also want to let everyone know that I just had a wonderful time in Grand Lake, CO. Took a retreat at Shadowcliff Lodge with W. Jayne Stanley. Learned more on pine needles and really had fun doing her "gourdskets". I surprised myself at how much fun that medium can be and I like the results of my efforts. We tracked up the hills and collected some flora and fauna and incorporated that into the basket. If you get a change take a workshop with her. We had the added pleasure of contributing to the production of her "video". She worked the class into the production and the class members will all get a copy when it is released.
