The inscription on the metal bands used by the U.S. Department of the Interior to tag migratory birds has been changed. The bands used to bear the address of the Washington Biological Survey, abbreviated: "Wash. Biol. Surv." Until the agency received the following letter from an Arkansas camper: "Dear Sirs: While camping last week I shot one of your birds. I think it was a crow. I followed the cooking instructions on the leg tag and I want to tell you it was horrible." The bands are now marked Fish and Wildlife Service. Also, Thursday's date is 9/9/99. It only happens once every decade. Take Care, David %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Storage of Dye Date: Sat, 4 Sep 1999 08:29:05 -0500 From: "Crystal Drenner" To: I use RIT dye and I store it in gallon jar plastic containers from the dollar store {around Indiana they cost a $1 a piece}. They look like large canning jars with screw off lids. When I make the dye I use very hot water, vinegar, salt, and dye of choice color. I also color my reed right in the jar. Even after it cools and the dye is stored, it might be a long while before I use it again. If I use a color a couple months later, I just set the container in a large sink or bathtub with hot water surrounding it, and start dye reed again inside. I haven't had a problem with mold, strings yes from the reed. My dye is stored in an old coal room {which is also where I make my baskets} in our basement, and there is no windows. Hope this one helps. Naomi- While you are in Boone, if you get hungry, try the Dan'l Boone Inn for lunch or dinner. Wonderful food, and they give you a bag of ham biscuits to take with you when you leave! Robbie and Pam, (and the rest of NC weavers)- I hope you guys aren't floating away! We've been watching the Weather Channel and worrying about the problems Dennis is causing. Date: Sat, 4 Sep 1999 11:10:47 EDT From: Frbasketsc@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Hi to all weavers, What is and where can I find the Jeremiah basket. Well, my 10-year-old son started school last week, and it is great to get back to weaving full time. I am looking forward to winter and skiing. I really enjoy reading about all the travels, and learning about new technique this is a very informative site. Thank you David for all your time and effort. I just finished my basket for the swap it will be heading toward the East Coast soon! Well got to go. Your friend in weaving, Carolyn %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Date: Sat, 4 Sep 1999 14:15:34 -0400 From: "Ingram" To: Hi everyone! I hate to ask for repeats, but I can't find the letter from someone who was weaving around soup cans. The thought is intriguing--could you post it again or email me? I'm curious about the size of your stakes, and what rim/handle you did. My only BIG show of the year comes up in early October, so I gotta get going! Our lives are consumed with high school soccer right now, so weaving is squeezed in the middle. I even take my #2RR to games to twine individually while I sit there. It draws some looks, that's for sure. Take care, and thanks! Thank You so very much for this wonderful web site and mailing list. Please include me in the list of people who would like to receive the 'Naturals' communications. To Weavers Worders...... I work mostly with pine needles and would like to know if there is some way to prepare them so they remain flexible enough to actually weave with even after they are dry? That should hold your base measurement exactly where you want it to be. Leigh - Back on August 11 you asked me about my wax linen egg baskets. I have 4 patterns of different size egg baskets called "Fiesta Baskets". One is a real miniature 1" that you can use as a necklace. I have a 2-inch "Feliz Navidad" in red and green that makes a great tree ornament. The other 2 are approx. 3" and are "Flat Bottom" and "Fanny". The kits I sell include 5 & 6 colors of thread. If you are interested in purchasing my patterns or kits please email me direct for prices. Let me add that I have another wax linen pattern and kit called "Midi Lobster Bean Pot" made with12 ply wax linen. Bert - Thanks for answering Leigh about my baskets. Teaching Basketweaving at the local community college has kept me very busy. Last year I had a vision impaired student that did very well. I just found out that I'll have a second vision impaired student next week. I guess I must be doing something right. At first I was a little worried about this, but it has been a great experience. Am also looking forward to our fall seminars here in NC. Hope Hurricane Dennis' relatives don't show up. Three times in one week is enough of anything except making baskets. I am going to hold off until craft fair fever is over. Maybe I*ll weave it over Christmas vacation, so I can take out my frustrations on the basket while my mother (ahem) is visiting.....Again, thanks for taking the time to answer. Is JUSTPATTERNS finished? I heard Deb Blair wants to sell (heard this through the grapevine) and I have been unable to access her site for some time. The last copy of JUSTPATTERNS which is normally the Christmas edition had only 4 patterns, one of which had been a freebie pattern on Baskets of Joy*s site last year. I don*t think any of the 4 were Deb*s patterns... Anna, give me some more info on weaving with banana tree parts. I have a mini grove in my backyard and we cut down a 12-15 footer a couple of weeks go and took it to a dumpster (it gave birth and died....it was a race to distribute the bananas to friends and neighbors as the entire bunch of 40-50 (I think) bananas got ripe at once.) There is always something peeling off the current trees. Now, what did you do with this? After it dried, did you strip it and make spokes or just weavers? And here I*m thinking I have nothing neat to weave with from my yard.... Congrats, Billie for your award! I agree, this is a spot for weavers to pat themselves on the back and I would like to see more of it. Do hope, though, you stayed fairly dry with this Dennis character whipping around off your coast. Change in plans--we are meeting older daughter, Bridget for dinner so my feet will have to wade at Waikiki this evening. That will do. A few months ago, someone posted instructions for making stain out of sweet gum balls. This weekend, I picked up 1,000's of these things left in my yard from Hurricane "Dennis-the-Menace" and now I can't find the information I printed out. Would that person be kind enough to either post it again or you can e-mail me directly. I have about 2 buckets full. Some are still green and others are dark brown. Does it matter which ones I use? Thanks for your help! Nothing's worse than having that red dye in one block bleed on the white ones next to it (experience talking here....of course that was in my pre-retayne days!) Retayne generally can be purchased in quilt shops. You can also order it from Keepsake Quilting in New Hampshire. The # is 1-800-865-9458. They have a web site but no shopping cart. ;o( You can order a catalog though. The web site is www.keepsakequilting.com. The email addy is keepsake@lr.net. For bases he uses a Thin Kerf blade to cut the slot. The basket I use the bases for uses 1/4 flat oval for the spokes and before inserting them into the slot you fold over the spoke end about 1/4", so you are inserting a double thickness. This works great for me. If you would like any further help you can e-mail Jeff or I direct atclueless1013@juno.com. Since the acid from the vinegar (acetic acid) is probably what is eating through the container, the bleach bottle is made to handle the acid content of bleach, which if I remember correctly is hyperchloric acid... Well, so much for the chemistry lesson and back to lashing a Nantucket Nesting Set. Hi Gloria, it won't be long now!!!!!!!!!!! (I assume that David has taken this on also, but maybe someone else is doing it. Congratulations, Billie, on your best of show! Quite an accomplishment - and while we basketweavers as a group aren't envious or catty, it certainly is nice to get that extra special recognition - and respect! Bert, I can't believe how much trouble you had getting my swap partner's name to me Or even that it got to me at all -since the address you had on it was wrong (probably I entered it incorrectly) the address should be purrx3 (not 2) for our 3 cats. I'm probably going to have to change the address soon - we've acquired a 4th cat. I opened my e-mail for the first time in a week and am doing 'selective' reading - anything to do with weaving and from relatives only. School started Monday and I'm already swamped -lots of schedule changes to make, IEPs have started, a student's mother died, a teacher is in the hospital as the result of a skateboarding accident . . . I keep telling myself I love my job (true), I just feel like I'm meeting myself coming and going without enough time to weave, keep up with WW happenings, and still get anything like the number of hours of sleep I need. "Quit your job and downsize your home and sell anything unnecessary that takes up your time. If you spend a lot of time cooking and eating, don't cook -- just re-heat -- and cut back to one short meal a day. If your husband makes demands, sell him, too. In other words, rearrange your priorities. (I kept the Pekinese.)" This would probably apply to us basket weavers, as well.
