It also works with dyed reed. It can be purchased at fabric or quilt stores. You put a capful (experiment with the amount you wish to use), in the very hot dye water. Stir until dye and retayne are dissolved well. When dying process is complete, I plunge my reed into ice water, and then dry thoroughly. It helps the color not to bleed. Red, navy and black are notorious for bleeding, and it helps. I would like to know if anyone has any information on a pattern for a large picnic basket (English style) with a full wooden lid (probably hinged) that can be used as a little table and two handles that fold down to open the basket. I have a pattern for a smaller version with a "D" handle, but this basket will have a wooden base. The dimensions that I am looking for are about 24" long by about 16" wide, but I can alter the pattern to fit if it is the right one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail me at basktsuply@aol.com with any info. Retayne is a color fixative to help prevent dyes from running. I have used it many times as a quilter and I was excited to hear it can be used in the dyeing process for reed too. I guess I should have known. I have a quilting catalog called Connecting Threads that carries it. Their number is 1-800-574-6454. A 16-oz. bottle costs $5.49. It goes a long ways because you only use a capful. A local quilt store should also carry it, if you happen to have one in your area. It's been awhile since I posted. Between battling record breaking heat this summer here in NC and now watching our unwanted, uninvited "visitor -- Dennis" whojust won't go away, I've just been enjoying reading what everyone else has posted. Did want to give this tip though concerning dyes leaking. In our house we drink ALOT of Gatorade; in the gallon jugs or the half-gallon size. If there are any more ofyou out there whose family partakes of this beverage, those containers are wonderful for dyes. They're good and sturdy - not like milk jugs. I've had some dye injugs now for 3 years and nothing has leaked out yet. When you want to clean out one to put another color in, you can rinse them out with water and a little bit ofbleach and they clean up great! Sure hope those WW folks who were vacationing on Hatteras Island got out before Monday!! I have ordered soaps from Judy once thus far and I agree the soaps are wonderful! The soaps I have tried include carrot, cinnamon and clove, milk and oatmeal, lavender and some with mint. The carrot soap is a pretty orange color and the one I have is so cute in the shape of a sun face. The mint ones smell so refreshing and all of the soaps make your skin feel great! My favorite shapes are the sun face, Celtic oval (looks nice in the milk and oatmeal soap) and the bee and honeycomb. There are other shapes I would like to try. If anyone has ordered any of the other shapes I haven't mentioned, let me know which ones you like best. I plan to order again closer to the holiday season and will use the soaps in my baskets as gifts. After reading the latest chapter in the continuing saga about plastic-eating dyes, I think I'm going to start transferring my dyes to a new set of bottles! (I use 2-liter soda bottles...) Also, I have a question: Has anyone tried weaving scarlet runner bean vines? I have a bumper crop of them this year, no flowers or beans, just LOTS of vines... The leaf stems are really full of water, but I'm wondering if I let the vines dry well first... would they be too brittle then? If anyone has tried them, I'd really like to hear how you fared with them. I have no experience with naturals, but thought since I have them in the garden anyway, I'd like to give it a shot. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. I have been meaning to respond to those of you who inquired about the product Retayne that I use on my dyed reed. I mentioned a couple months ago, that I use this product to set the dye in fabrics that I use in quilts. I then started using it on my dyed reed. I rinse my reed thoroughly after dying it, and then put it in clear lukewarm water with a capful or two of Retayne. I have had NO problem with my reed bleeding. I love this stuff. Anyway, the stuff is pretty cheap, and it will last forever, as you only use a capful or so at a time. The last time I bought a pint bottle, it was about 6 bucks or so. And that was two year ago. Like I said, you only use a capful or so. Try your local quilt shop first. If they do not carry it, I talked to my friend that sells it, and she would be happy to mail it to anyone who wants. You'd have to pay for the shipping, so email her and ask what the total price would be. Here is the address, phone and email for the Retayne: Karen Ehrhardt Quilt Corner 2037 S. What a pain. Here's why. I want the base to be 15" long; I measured as I got the base together; After I had the first 4 side rows in, I measured again and it had slipped down to 14". The tape can help keep pieces from flaking off and also from flying up in your face. Some pieces look better with only one hole and some might look better if attached in two places, ie a wide scallop shell. If I don't want to drill a shell to use or if it is a nice rock I've found, I do knotless netting around it with very thin wire or waxed linen, etc, leaving a twisted loop or loops to attach it with. As for attaching your shell....slip it onto a weaver, tie it on later with waxed linen, raffia, etc..... Whatever looks right. Have fun...soon you'll be viewing all sorts of things as "possible embellishments"!
