Anyone know of anything big going on in August or September time frame in the Orlando or Tampa-St.Pete area? I will be in those cities during those two months and would like to attend any big classes, basket bashes, conventions anything!!!!!!! Lois and I are saving for NC Basket Convention next year, but I thought since I would be on the mainland this summer for awhile I might have the opportunity to get some weaving and classes in. Hope someone has some good news!!! Mulling over the opportunity to do my first fair this fall. I have expert help but it is a little nerve wracking. Got tent, got tables, got baskets, (all I need now is...) got guts????????? Hope I can summon up the courage. The basket is lovely, done on a sharpe top d handle with mauve woven border. It may be an Easter basket, but it will be year round at my house!! It already has a place of honor in my kitchen and will serve as the goodie basket for my daughter's birthday party tonight. Thanks again, Judy, you do beautiful work. One woman mentioned that she really hoped she's get into the class Jean Cadmus May is teaching - her Spiral Tray. I had to pipe up and say that you had woven one of those for me for a WW basket swap. Everyone was stunned and amazed that someone would weave such a great basket for a swap. I had to gloat a bit and grin a lot! Thanks again (even though it seems long ago now). The basket is as beautiful as ever! Betsy O'Conner - I haven't had to fly home with baskets, but have taken tools and materials with me when teaching away from home. It's a good idea to pack your tools in an old purse or small duffle and put them in your checked bag. The airlines don't like anyone to have an object that could be a potential weapon in their carry-on luggage. For the trip home, you may be able to get a sturdy cardboard box from one of the vendors or teachers. Pack your baskets with plenty of padding around them and mark the box FRAGILE - DO NOT CRUSH. Make a tape carry handle and check it with your luggage. If the baskets are small enough, you may be able to put them in a carry-on tote. As for what tools to take - the basic weaving tools most of us carry include a water container (although if yours is bulky, you may be able to share with someone who drove in and had more room for such things - weavers are generally good at sharing such things), a small water spray bottle (empty), shears or clippers, a packing tool or small flat screwdriver, an awl, some small needle-nose pliers, a sharp knife (with sheath or wrapper), an old hand towel or two, some clamps or clothes pins (or plastic cable ties), measuring tape, spoke weight, pencil, sandpaper. Some instructors have loaner tools, so go minimalist in your packing. You may not need every tool for every basket. By the way, if anyone wants to contact me directly, my current email address is . The old account isn't working these days. If you have written to me there & not gotten a response, it is probably because I never saw your message. Please resend to the new address. Ruthanne - have you met any Hopi basketmakers? Susan Laswell - Weavers Words readers have a basket swap ever couple of months. There's usually one in progress or one in the sign-up stage. The 8th is now in progress and it seems a lot of people are getting their baskets woven and sent early this time. Watch for the next one to come around. The coordinator will tell everyone what the rules are and how to sign up for it. Marcia Balleweg - Don't know about the pattern you want, but one of the women in a class I took this weekend had a very nice coiled purse. The core was round reed and it was stitched with fine cane. It was oval and had a coiled lid with leather and brass fittings. She said she found it on ebay. Now I wish I'd taken a picture of it. Anna - It's good to see you back! I'll be thinking of you at your weavers get-together this weekend. I finished filling in the weaving on my willow Woodland Gathering Basket today. All that remains now to finish my 3 Marlys Sowers baskets from last weekend is to add the strap to this one, lash the rims on the 2 Nantucket style ones and apply a finish to them. Let us know what else you're weaving these days. Wish I had a good place for bullrushes. I think David uses whatever labels we send him when he posts our photos. So maybe we should all be sure to specify which swap we're talking about when we send them in. Sounds like a good idea to me. I may be out of touch for a while now, although still reading WW. I learned late Saturday night (April 8, 2000) that my son Chuck (Wade) in Valdez, Alaska, has died. He had severe diabetes (obviously worse than we knew), and was found dead in his bed at home, of unspecified complications. Needless to say, I'm devastated. He would have been 40 years old this July. Although I can't get to Valdez for the memorial his friends are conducting there on Saturday the 15th, my daughter Bobbie Lou and her fiancé Clarence, who live in Fairbanks, will attend. Bob and I will go to the service Chuck's Dad is having in Lake City, Iowa, on the 22nd of this month. Please pardon my rambling, but I wanted to let you know why I may have seemed to drop out of sight for a while. I'll be back when I get over the shock somewhat. Morningstar" To: davidc@iei.net Well, Basket Bash 2000 is just a memory, but Oh What a Memory! We had new weavers, experienced weavers, some who only weave once a year, some who never wove with natural materials/antlers! Attendees learned new techniques, how to make basket potpourri, stamp their own canvas tote, make fish and knots out of reed, flat and round, a great basket exercise and made their own Ice Cream Sundaes! Not to mention all the different baskets that went home in their vehicles and the new friendships that were made. It was a great weekend. And the snow we got on Saturday was quite picturesque. The dates for 2001 are set for April 20, 21 and 22. We'll keep you posted. We'd like to Thank Dollie Koch of Weaver's Stain for all she donated for us, Sheri Van Duyn for several Pattern Books, Jodie Shebester for some donations and Suzanne Moore from North Carolina Basketworks for donating patterns. Thanks from the Basket Bash 2000 Committee! Barb Foster - Hope you made it home safely! Is your Piiki Tray finished? I've had several private e-mails regarding locating old, out of print books. I thought I'd mention it here for anyone else who may be interested. For Basketry books I came across a site - needleworkbooks.com They have several craft areas, one being basketry. Although it is rather small. You can also go to a Search Engine and look for Out of Print Book Dealers or Used Book Dealers. Plan on spending some time to find what you're looking for. Good Luck! Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 21:55:03 EDT From: ZOOBAR@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Hello Fellow WWs- So great to be back after what seems to be a long time. The move from Louisville, Ky. to lovely Blythe, GA (an itty bitty use-to-be-town) went as well as can be hoped. The best part was finding my new home (2 acres with 1,624 sq. ft modular home, nope, this is not a trailer as it "ain't going anywhere and never had wheels". Ok- so nitpick - yes it's a mobile but only when it was placed on site in 2 huge halves.) I have 8 huge Pecan trees from which I hope to find out if a dye can be made . Someone help me here- I was sent an e-mail (in early to mid February) with the subject line "Pecan Shells" and as I working on my son's computer, which I understand not, an entire pot full of e-mails was deleted. Besides having 10 thumbs I am also not a "techie nerd". Could the kind person who sent what I hope is info on Pecan Shell dye be kind enough to resend? Another bonus here is my very OWN Sweet Gum Tree- I love the warm soft color I get when using those funny, prickly thingamabobs. The worst part -the box unpacking tunnel at last has a light showing at the end so my 10 thumbs are really getting twitchy! Speaking of boxes- if you want to know which Moving Company NOT to use - email me privately. These folks will never make it as Harlem Globetrotters despite all the practice they had with my over 200 boxes. With my little 2acre Dreamfield (might that be a name for my place? or maybe Meadowhaven?) I hope to create a haven and resting area for all wildlife in hopes of repaying Mother Nature in some small way. I am well on the way to creating a wild meadow area in the front (about 1/3 of the property) with an inner perimeter of deadfall, logs, etc, and the meadow area in the middle. An outer boundary will be keep wild but mowed so the neighbors won't be sure I'm crazy and or lazy. With the addition of the 8 or more (have lost count) various native trees (both evergreen and fruit) I hope to attract as many birds and critters as possible. Of course I have water for all to drink and have even placed an Apple scented salt lick said to attract deer, rabbits, ect. Of course the bird feeders (5 so far), suet feeders and hummingbird feeders are all in place. April 6th I had my first "flying jewel" and was I thrilled to see one so early in the year- early for me that is. The back portion of the property will slowly become more of the same to be shared by gentle people and wildlife alike. The tranquility here is unreal and should be the perfect setting to get serious about becoming a better weaver. As the breeze ripples the Pecan leaves, and Mockingbirds play "catch-me-if-you-can" with each other, the other birds are having choir practice, and even my own Pileated Woodpecker in-residence is drumming only a message he understands. It's difficult to believe all this can not help my 10 thumbs come into order, of some kind! Sorry to ramble fellow WWs, but I've missed you and weaving. I actually caught up on all the issues I'd missed and continue to be thankful we have David Collins on our side. Barbara in Blythe but still 10 Thumbs. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: It's been a while... Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 22:28:09 -0500 From: Tony Stubblefield To: David Collins/Weavers Words Hello everyone, Well, it has been a while since I have written in. Work has kept me very busy and it seems like every weekend something is going on. I taught my2 class for Spring a couple of weeks ago and everyone did great. We made a 5" Nantucket in one class and a 5" Nantucket jewelry basket in the other. I also wanted to let everyone know that there is still time to sign up for one or both of the workshops I am hosting with Martha Wetherbee this Summer over Memorial Day weekend. We will be making a 11" round Nantucket Beverage Tray on Saturday and Sunday and a 5" Puzzle Mold Cathead of brown ash. If you haven't taken a class from Martha before she's a great teacher. The classes are being held at my house so I will be giving guided tours of my basket collection :-) Martha will also have kits to sell and you will have a chance to work on them in the evening if you want to stick around after class. If you would like more information or to see pictures of the baskets you can visit my web site at: http://www.tetranet.net/users/deanandtony/class.html I usually go away for a week each summer and take a basket workshop out East. Unfortunately this year I am having trouble finding a class to take. I am looking into going to Nantucket Island, but we will have to see what works out. Class assignments should have be received now from the MO convention. I am taking 2 white oak classes with Luke Block and I am very excited to get to work with split oak again. It has been a very long time. Well I am reading a good book right now and I am at that point were I can't put it down. Better go finish it up. We are working hard to save for this trip--we "guesstimate" it will cost us at a minimum $2000 for the trip (including airfare, food, hotel, convention fees, classes and plenty of spending money!) and we*d like tips from weavers--what do we need to bring, what should we expect, does NC have a UPS or Mailboxes, Etc. booth at the convention--what*s the weather like in March and etc. We*d like to hear from weavers who attended this year for the first time. What do you wish you had done (or taken)? What did you do that you won*t do again? I*m updating the source sheet I give to students at my classes and if you have a supply business, let me know and I*ll list it. I list the suppliers I do business with whether I use them once a year or once a week--but I have to be happy with them. Rudeness, poor service, bad reed--no way would I recommend them. At class yesterday, we were having a lighthearted discussion of "what is a tree hugger" and the question came up--can a person who uses wood products in their baskets be one? I would like to thank Claudia so very much for my beautiful basket. Claudia sent me a Sewing Basket the pattern is found in the Basketmakers book by Deborah Blair. The Sewing Basket is about 9 inches high by 8 inches wide. She wove the basket in navy blue and natural reed. The basket had a wooden base and a very nice lid and a navy blue handle. I just love the basket thank you, Claudia. She also enclosed to stationary pads by Pat Richter Gallery. I have a few other pieces already and while was at the NCBA convention I purchased wallpaper border and light switches by Pat Richter Gallery. The border is trimmed in navy with baskets, ribbons and flowers. Pat Richter also has lampshades, which I add to the other stuff. I think I've gone basket crazy. I guess that's why there are so many baskets. When I put up my border in the entryway I can display Claudia's basket. Again Claudia thank you so very much. David, as always you do a wonderful job of keeping us informed. Thank you!!!! Jennifer, thank you for coordinating the Basket Swap #8. Hopefully every thing is going well.
