Morningstar" To: davidc@iei.net To Marjorie - I wrote to the German Basketry School about their festival back in 1991 and they wrote back to me in German. I had to have my German girlfriend translate it to me. They have a Festival in September every other year, the odd numbered year, as I understand it. The address I wrote to is The German Federal Basketry Trade School, Lichtenfels, Germany. I attended back in 91 and if there is anyway you can go, do it! It's worth the trip. Bert - Glad you have so many Dandelions. Make sure it's the juice you freeze. I've never frozen the Dandelion flower head. Karen Traub - No, I usually don't make it to the Michigan convention. It's at a bad time of the year for me. In October I've been going out West to a Reunion and then working with a group of Hopi people, which has been fascinating. And the Betsy O'Connor's question about attending conventions. You would bring the usual basketry tools. If anything special is needed, it is usually listed in the class description in the catalog or the instructor will contact you to inform you. As for your baskets getting home, all the conventions have a UPS station for shipping. I'm sure you can get more information on this from the committee people. I've never had to use this service but have seen it there. Shereen LaPlantz's "Plaited Basketry: The Woven Form" was published back in 1982. I would suggest locating a used bookstore that deals in old books to find one. There are some on the Net that deal in Craft areas exclusively. Good luck! The Bash is this weekend and there are still some loose ends that need to get knotted yet! Ruthanne M.S. I'd like to know if anyone sells hats and t-shirts with basket motifs and sayings on them. I've only made a few baskets but, as I'm hearing quite often, "I'm hooked!" After my first beginner kit I jumped in with both hands, er feet. I made two large adirondack backpacks and one small one and an Appalachian utility basket. Then I made a beautiful market basket. My husband and I re-enact the French & Indian War time period at historical events and after I made my first backpack, I got my first order for another. :-0 I'm very interested in the history of colonial basket making. If anyone can recommend a web site or a good book, I would appreciate that. At last year's Missouri convention, I saw a woman with a really great woven purse. It was rectangular and had a lid that went over the outside of the basket and a shoulder strap. I never saw her and the purse together again to ask after the pattern. Anyone have any ideas for lidded purses. I prefer to weave the lid instead of a wooden one. It is good to have all you experienced weavers out there to help us newcomers. I see where some have already made and sent their baskets for the swap...I on the other hand can't decide which one to do yet! I will have to decide soon, so that I can get going and get it sent on time. I have it narrowed down to about 4 patterns, but can't make the final cut. I am a fairly new weaver, so I hope my partner won't be disappointed. I love to weave, but have such a tough time with which pattern to tackle next - there are sooo many great ones out there:) Again, thanks for the great info. I really enjoy this forum!! They are beautiful, but we are having trouble with gluing the points. We tried Tacky Glue, then switched to the hot glue gun which worked a little better. I would appreciate any recommendations for the glue that other weavers think works best for this project, and any other tips. Happy Weaving! We have had an absolutely glorious summer and I haven't spent a lot of time in front of the computer, although I have finally managed to catch up on reading my back issues of WW. We had some family health issues with my in-laws, too, which took great chunks of time but everything is fine in that area now. I emailed Carol who was looking for weavers in Tasmania so hopefully she will get in touch. Our state get-together is this weekend coming up and I am really looking forward to it. I promised a group that I am involved with an antler basket for their Easter raffle so no prizes for guessing what I will be doing over the weekend! I can only get fallow deer antlers here so they don't have all the lovely points on them that I see on the American ones but I am still enjoying working with them. Each one is different! We had our gathering day this past Sunday and went wading in the dams to cut tall spike rush (Eleocharis sphacelata) and bulrushes (Typha spp.). Of course my waders had a hole in them and of course I stepped in a hole so I ended up in water that was deeper than my waders were high!! And getting the bulrushes of course only I stepped in the boggiest area and almost lost my gumboots to the suction of the mud!!! Ended up with stomach cramps from laughing so hard! We had a great time. We are trying to gather enough excess to have a variety of materials available for Baskets 2001, the international gathering that will be held here next March. I recently bought up a lot of 1.5mm and 2mm (I think that is #1 and #2.5 American sizes) cane (reed?) from an elderly persons daycare center so I am really looking forward to doing some dyeing and weaving with that. When Eileen LaPorte was here last year she very kindly gave me a copy of the '99 AMB Convention Catalog and I often take that out for inspiration and drool over it and think "One day, one day..." I had hoped to make a visit home this year with just my daughter but I don't think finances will stretch that far. I had planned on Sept. But now we have a Maori master basket weaver coming over then for a four-day class and I really want to go to that...can't do everything. My sister in law is coming over in July and I am getting her to bring me some books and things. Which brings me to a question. I read somewhere and can't find it now...did someone still have copies of "Antler Baskets...weaving Rocky Mountain memories" (is that the right title?) I have been looking for it and can't remember who mentioned it. I had a look through various sites' book catalogs and got a very bad case of the "gimmeeees"! I'll have to narrow it down so my sister in law has room for her clothes, eh? Dolores--I love your Japanese flower knot basket!! What is it made out of? Are there diagrams for that knot in any books that you know of? It looks similar to a four-sided one that the Maoris do with flax. Everyone--I love all of the baskets in the Gallery...another source of inspiration. Well, better go before I get TOOOOOOO long winded. I'll try not to be so long between messages.... Anna in Tassie on a glorious autumn day....its almost willow time...YIPPEEEEE!!! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: New email address Date: Mon, 03 Apr 2000 23:20:12 -0400 From: "Barb Stoken" To: davidc@iei.net Hi everyone, Wanted to let you know that I have a new email address -- barbbaskets@macol.net. She lives and runs an herb farm in Avondale Estates, Georgia, outside Atlanta, and is looking to weave a bee skep. She has the pattern that was in the Spring Gardens issue of Early American Homes Magazine, but would like to have someone teach her the coiling technique. She hasn't woven any kind of basket before and feels unsure about following the directions given. Like "Anna Lizotte Basket she made for swap 8" or something like that? Sometimes I get confused and forget which pictures I have looked at already. The other question: Does anyone know of some gourd varieties that might grow down here? We have fairly mild winters, no snow and only 6-12 frosts through the winter. Summers are in the mid to high 70s usually. I haven't really looked into it yet but thought I would throw the question out. If I know what varieties to look for it may help. I am just itching to get into working with some gourds after seeing all the lovely ones on various sites! Well, better get to bed as it is 1:35am! This basket has a basic square grid woven base and compact woven sides in a balance weave. As the basket begins to have shoulders, the weave becomes diagonal and opens up leaving space between the spokes and the weavers. At this time new corners are formed on the sides. A neck is created with plain weave and the rim is double wrapped, creating a nice finish. Weaving Level: All levels (must have some weaving experience). Students must supply their own tools. Class Cost: $45 If you are interested please email me today!! There are a few spaces left and the registration deadline is APRIL 12! She managed to get a nice sunburn on Saturday/Sunday--Jill was down in Portland OR teaching her beautiful "Intertwine" antler basket to a very appreciative class. Several of us from Seattle drove down to spend the day weaving-some sat outside in the sunshine and managed to get a little "pink"--Jill included. Hopefully she'll tell you about her fly fishing adventure at the lake. I will post photos of the intertwine when I get them, I'm sure you all are curious to see.
