Happy birthday Norma. Been enough talk about cutting slots that I finally had to post. Those of you who have known me for years know that my husband did indeed cut his finger off cutting a slot in a base for me. He was being careless and using the slot cutter on the router without a guard. We now have a guard so the rest of his fingers are safe and mine too. ABSOLUTELY don't attempt this unless you have a guard on your router. Also as someone pointed out before when the slot cutter hits a knot it will throw the wood. Of course this is what happened when he lost his finger, but even with the guard on it will throw the wood unless you really have a good grip on the base. Another good tip is not to put the slots in the bases when anyone else is in the woodworking area with you because I have let go of a few bases and they fly hard and fast. Just llke any other woodworking safely is the number one priority. I do cut several of my bases, but even with the guard on the router it is so scary that I won't do a base any smaller than 6". It is just way too scary, but thank goodness my husband will do the smaller ones. I have a couple of quiver patterns not my own. I'll did through my thousands of patterns one of these days and find it and post who is the author. I made one for one of my sons and not the other so I still have to make another anyhow. Denise the pattern that holds 3 rolls of tp with a lid is mine. You can find it on basketpatterns.com under Pam Woodbury. Pam Hancock as for twining and holding the reed onto the D handle while doing so is probably one of those things that practice makes perfect. I have no trouble with this but I have done more than I can count. You are on the right tract with cloths pinning them on so maybe just do the same one over and over and over and keep tearing it out til you've mastered it. Sometimes even though it looks a little sloppy at first after you weave a couple of rows and pack everything tight it all looks much better. What I do with my Rit dye is never dump it. I figure it is probably not good for the environment and I use so much of it anyhow. I know not everybody had lots of freezers but if you do have a spare one on top of an old frig it is great for dye storage. The best way I have found it the ice cream buckets. Anyhow when dye gets low rather than dumping it down the drain or outdoors I just make the new batch right in with the old. Pam in Michigan where are Spartans are the greatest! The Greatest Show On Earth has come to an end for this year. Indiana Basket Convention is in the books except for final reports. I'd give it an A++++++++++++++ Rhonda Reinesch and Elaine Williamson were excellent as chairman/woman. The hotel handled us all beautifully with few problems. And the teacher/class selection was awesome. I opted for a long 12-hour class, which I would gladly sign up for again next year - with Donna Carlson. Quills and Birch lidded box. Kind of up my ally. Thank goodness I have pictures as each students box was incredibly unique. I would like to do an all natural quill and also one using purple quills. The student across the table did one in lavender blossoms with French knotted buds sprinkled around. It was exquisite. Then I would see these awesome twilled and of course Judith's Nine Patch baskets walking around and just about die from envy. Because of responsibilities I sold my Saturday class to a young weaver. She was thrilled to get the opportunity to weave a Flo Hoppe class and I was glad she got it. Sunday was a pine-needle teneriffe with Tressa. What a perfect way to close the weekend. Judith gave such a funny historical account of where the conventions and by whom they were all started - Michigan/North Carolina/Indiana. Several of the Originators were in the audience. It's amazing to think of these fantastic conventions in terms of current history. It became evident that these things need to be recorded quickly before we forget the woman and circumstances that began it all. On the shuttle back to the airport were two bawling women, me and another out-of-towner leaving friends behind. Well, flu greeted me when I got home Sunday night. Both children have been filling my days and nights with the harsh realities of Motherhood. I'm just now starting to sort out my suitcase and savor my basket vacation. I wonder what the luggage guys thought with two rain sticks packed in my suitcase? Until next year..... You know, I think humans are hazardous to the environment in general, but there are also many wonderful people who make up this world we live in. I do not use aerosol cans in cooking, cleaning or personal products for environmental reasons as well. I feel that there is a lot of waste, so perhaps we will be offered this wonderful product in a brush on can someday. But.....how do we dispose of the brush in an environmental way? Awareness is where it all begins. Please note that Proctor and Gamble Products are still using animal testing and supporting the Olympics with the use of their coupons at the same time. I refuse to use any products which are placed into the eyes and skins to test for irritation in my home. I am a tree hugger and an animal lover. I am hoping to meet many new weavers at the Northeast Basketmakers Guild meeting at Loomis Chaffee in Ct. on Sunday. See you there! Never has one gotten to me so quickly. What a surprise. When the package arrived I was on my way to soccer practice. My oldest son is a weaver and couldn't wait for me to open the package. However, I wanted to wait and enjoy it. I was surprised that the package had not been opened when I got home from my youngest sons practice. It was well worth the wait. Joan Daley from Ma made the "Octagon Flower" from Flo Hoppe's "Contemproary Wicker Basketry". I haven't attempted any of the baskets even though I love working with round reed. I love the Japanese weave, maybe now I will attempt to do one since I have something to go by. I also received some pieces of porcelain, which resemble the Blue Willow pattern. I collect Blue Willow dishes and even have several version of the story in book form. It will all fit together very well. Congratulations Norma on your birthday. I love the many ways David came up with to say you are 50 with really saying it. I have woven three baskets this week and I feel good. My exchange is finished but am trying to get a box and then it will go south of me. When I weave for the swaps I must have it already completed before I sign up. Otherwise it might not get finished on time or it isn't fun making when I am rushed. I haven't woven since Christmas. Just too busy. I attended visitor's day at the Indiana Convention. Schedule conflict to attend classes. It was nice to be able to relax and visit all of the vendors. I was pleased that there were so MANY vendors. I think some of them were surprised that they had sold out of items BEFORE they even got to Saturday. I don't write in too often but am always glad that there are so many out there who do. I enjoy reading the WW. Of the ones I've made, they seem to use more length than I would expect, probably because of weaving on the diagonal. I thought somewhere I had read a general formula or rule of thumb for calculating this. Does anybody know? Also, my library has been trying to find a copy of the Shereen LaPlantz book on plaited basketry for me to see - now long out of print and apparently in great demand. What's the history on this book? Has it been out of print a long time? If it is in that great a demand, why wouldn't the same or another publisher re-issue this book? Of course not being able to find it at all, not even through Interlibrary Loan so far, is making me want to see it all the more! Thanks to any and all who respond. No stress, no pressure and all fun. I am still trying to get the roof on and will bring pictures next year...it would not have been the same without all of you. By the way, you look great. To all WW readers: it's absolutely true that while sitting in the bar at the hotel at NCBA that Lynn who just made a basket that night in class sold it to a patron in the bar for him to give to his mother in lawn...now is that good Karma or what? We were stunned, surprised, overjoyed and gave her a standing ovation for her spontaneous sale! Never can tell what will happen. - Like when I got home and saw a 20/20 special on Monday night TV it was of all things about Talkeetna, Alaska and an incident which happened many years ago, but there it was on national TV Jill Choate's hometown in all it's glory... This is all for now...plan on ambushing the roofer tomorrow ... setting our clocks ahead tonight...just what I need is to lose another hour's sleep....happy weaving from Florida where it is 88 degrees (we went from winter straight into summer), the skies are blue to dye for, the clouds white as marshmallows and the humidity...well, I won't even go there....:) Jill %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 3 I. 123 Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2000 20:22:40 -0500 From: "Donna L" To: "David Collins" Hi Denise - We have a pattern called "Hidden Tissue" for sale in our online catalog at: http://secure.rnci.com/countryseat/primary.asp, which holds 3 rolls vertically. The Weavers Words website address is always listed at the beginning of each issue. Just go to that address and use the menu to select Basket Pictures. After that, they are in alphabetical order by the weavers' last names. Ruthanne M.S. Morningstar - I probably have enough dandelions for both of us! I hadn't thought of freezing them - that sounds like a good idea. Rae Hunter - I hate it when that happens! I've had a problem recently with my juno account and have not been able to retrieve any mail from there in over 2 weeks (such as the Willow &Naturals list). It sort of makes me feel a little less lost to know that I'm not alone (although I wouldn't wish computer problems on anyone). I guess Missouri just loves company. Lisha Kimball - Aerosol sprays are not the ozone-damaging things they once were. A law was passed a number of years ago that prohibits the propellant that damages the ozone layer. New aerosol sprays are ok. Billie D. Loved your NCBA convention report! Thanks! You maybe amused to know I'm finally taking a Nantucket class. Actually 2 of them this weekend with Marlys Sowers from Iowa. We decided the vase we started tonight should be a 6-hour class instead of just 4. I think the swing-handled 8-inch oval tomorrow will go a bit faster because the materials aren't quite so fine. Dot Hutchins from Maine sent me a gorgeous 12-inch square basket with a neat herringbone pattern woven in a wide band around it. It was stained a lovely deep brown, and her workmanship is impeccable. I'm sure I'm not doing it enough justice, but I'm proud that she sent such a great basket to ME! She also included a wonderful note introducing herself and her basket, some bases she made HERSELF out of Maine pine (oh the talent!), and some popover mix that I'm dying to try.
