I just get taken to the Xoom home page and not WW?? Pattern Search: Can anyone direct me to a pattern of a basket that is woven out of 1/4" or 11/64" half oval and has very little weaving - the sides are brought up with just the spokes, and periodically, cane is woven around the basket once to hold the shape. It's very open, delicate, lots of spokes, and just a swirl of twine to a rim that is wrapped (at least the one I saw was wrapped). I've seen something similar at Gratiot Lake Basketry, but the instructions were in Japanese. Cathryn: Thanks for your post on CT. I sent Helen a private e-mail but it basically said the same thing you did. It's good to hear someone else say their chiropractor had a part in curing CT. Mine worked the muscles in my arm and in a month, my lump and symptoms were gone. Unfortunately, my stepdaughter at 18 chose surgery and she is a mess. Her lump is larger than ever (2 operations later) and she has very limited use of her wrists and they are suggesting another surgery. I encouraged her to see my chiro when she first started having the troubles, but she didn't see the connection. Flo Hoppe's first book, "Wicker Basketry", is now back in print and available again. I know many of you have been in search of it recently. Also, another new book is available called "The Art of Basketry" by Kari Lonning. Some years ago I made a Kari Lonning basket, taught with permission at an AMB convention by Theresa Ono, which is a five strand round reed basket and the color patterns are out of this world. You will love Kari's techniques with achieving the most interesting color patterns with round reeds. She also shows very unique rimming techniques. The book will be here around the first of April. I have had it just in my right wrist for years. Had I known when I first started weaving what I know now I might not have it. I always wear a brace now when I weave and most definitely when I sleep. Like everybody else I sleep with my hand under my head. With a brace on I still do this but the wrist stays straight. With using the brace while I weave it keeps my wrist from getting worse. Had I wore a brace before I ever had carpal tunnel to weave in I feel I wouldn't have it now. If I have been on the computer too much or really weaving too much I rest my wrist for a day and it usually feels much better. I tried the B6 and really didn't notice any difference. The brace has a metal bar under the hand and on the wrist. It keeps the hand at the wrist from that repetitive motion. You might think this would be hard to weave in or sleep in but like anything else once you get used to it, it is as natural as anything else. Occasionally when I go to guild I forget the brace. My wrist needs to only go in that repetitive motion a few times and I know it is time to quit weaving. I don't understand this but it must be how rib baskets are made, but I don't need a brace when I weave ribbed baskets cause it doesn't bother my wrist. It's made using 2 8" heart shaped hoops, 1/4" oval oval for ribs and 3/8" flat for weavers. The handle goes from point to point and sits more on the top rounded parts of the heart shape than on the bottom point. Of course I haven't made it yet, it's on my list of baskets to weave, but bought the pattern because of the phase I was going through at the time - different heart-shaped baskets. Which joined the Christmas, Easter, mini, waxed linen, etc., phases. So many baskets - so little time. Attended NCBA last week and had a wonderful time, although the time there was entirely too short and went by way too fast. I was lucky to get into Jill Choate's Antler Wall Pouch class and had a great time. Jill is a terrific teacher. Also had classes with Kathryn Jacoby, Bill Allen and two with Cass Schorsch, all terrific. And for the first time ever, I came home with finished baskets. Probably never happen again. Just want to thank the convention coordinators, they did a wonderful job. THANKS!!! Linda from Ft. Washington, MD, where the sun has finally reappeared. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: hearth ribbed basket Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 11:10:10 -0500 From: Tracey Green To: davidc@iei.net I need help with a ribbed basket. I am attempting a ribbed hearth basket. My problem is this. Now that I've started weaving - the center "D" seems to be about 1" too high compared to the ends. I followed the directions when nailing the frame together. Was I supposed to have the center "D" much lower than the ends when nailing the frame together? The pattern I am using is the one from Lyn Siler's book. Please let me know if anyone can help or has suggestions. My thought was to undo the weaving and re-mail the frame together with the center being about 1" lower than the ends. Since this is only my second ribbed basket I'm not sure what to do. Sharon in Marcellus - I took several basket classes with you at OCC about5-6 years ago and have been addicted to baskets ever since. I live in Warners, NY. I wish that more Central New Yorkers would introduce themselves. I too will be attending the Baskets of Abundance Conference in Rochester. Carpal tunnel syndrome has nothing to do with circulation, though the tingling (or numbness, or buzzing) people experience in their hands and fingers feels a lot like when reduced circulation puts part of your body "to sleep." CTS is caused by repetitive motion of the hands that causes inflammation of a small channel through the carpel bones of the wrist/hand through which the median nerve passes. This inflammation creates pressure on the median nerve, leading to pain and numbness, and if it persists long enough can lead to atrophy of the large muscles in the hand and a permanent loss of strength and dexterity. The median nerve, btw, serves the thumb, index and 1/2 of the middle finger (the half adjacent to the index). If you have numbness that ends curiously in the middle of the middle finger, you've got CTS. If you have numbness that extends past this boundary, you may have CTS and other problems, like thoracic outlet inflammation (where the nerves serving the arm leave the chest) or other fun stuff. Surgery is strictly the treatment of last resort, though the techniques involved have progressed a lot in the past 20 years, and the vast majority who elect for surgery have good results (in earlier days it was a much riskier proposition whether you'd come though with better function). However, surgery can usually be avoided if you catch CTS early, and take steps to relieve the inflammation and change the way you do things to avoid aggravating the problem. I tried all kinds of braces, and finally found a type that allowed comfortable sleep (seems like a lot, if not most, of us sleep with hands flexed under our heads -- that flexing compresses the carpel joints and the median nerve) and maximum dexterity for using my hands during the day -- but limits the flexion in the wrist and thus irritation of the carpel tunnel & its nerve. These braces sit on top of the arm, rather than a cast-like 100%wraparound, or the type with the rigid part in the palm. Sadly, they were pricey when I got mine some 15 years ago, and they've gone up since. You can see the type I'm talking about by visiting this site (http://www.painreliever.com/carpallock.html). (Standard disclaimer of interest, etc.) Re-learning how to use my hands for pruning, planting bulbs, wielding a trowel, typing, mousing, etc., etc. also helped a lot. Physical therapy-type exercises were helpful, as well as ice packs and anti-inflammatory meds. Nutrition can't hurt, though I've personally always been neglectful of my nutrition. Vitamin B-6 is important for healthy nerve function, which is why some recommend it for CTS. Since the B vitamins are water-soluble they are lost quickly (particularly if you use coffee or any kind of caffeine or alcohol), so a supplement is a good idea. What others here have said is all of merit. You have to find the combination of things that works for you, and most folks do not have to resort to surgery. You do have to be willing to learn how to do things differently (which can sometimes be a real challenge). Very best regards, Phillip Allen, Stratford, CT %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Staining Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 10:50:07 -0600 From: Sandy Brown To: davidc@iei.net Just a question for any and all weavers - what is the best staining methods you all have used and has anyone found a stain or mix that doesn't smell so bad? It's so interesting to read notes from basket weavers all across the country! My husband and I recently moved here to Harmony, NJ (outside of Phillipsburg -- northwestern NJ near the PA border), from Pottstown, PA. A very good friend of mine in Pottstown introduced me to basket making about four years ago and I was hooked immediately. She and I got together about once a week to weave together, and now that we've moved away, I really miss weaving with a friend. I was wondering if there are any "basket people" out there that might be in my area. I'd love to hear from anyone who might be interested in getting together to weave! Thanks! Tip for all - try using bleached round reed (#2 or #3) for the twining around the base of flat reed baskets. It's incredibly flexible and it shrinks slightly as it dries so it tightens up around the base. I used it all week and really liked it. Two of the baskets I went back with a tweezers and straightened up the twining (I was a little sloppy and rushed) after it was almost dry and it's so flexible that I didn't have to worry about cracking or beaking the round reed. I will be checking out the sources. Also to Helen Schwartz - I recently saw a Dr about my wrists and he prescribed wearing a "cock up splint" for 12 hours a day. It keeps your hand at an angle and since I have been wearing it (only when I sleep) it has eliminated 99% of the problem. My problem is that when that joint gets wet either the glue or the nail is turning the corner of the handle black! Do any of you have advice on how remove these black marks once the basket is completed? I've tried sanding and that doesn't seem to get it all. Would finishing (staining) the handle first help?
