I have ordered twice from the other company and by the time I finally got the book with them shipping the wrong book, losing my order, etc. it was more than a months wait. Basketmaking has caught up with me and I am dealing with carpal tunnel, thoracic outlet problems and more. Am getting physical therapy, trying cortisone shots in my wrists, exercising like crazy for my back and shoulders and trying to cope with the boredom and disappointment that comes with no basketmaking, piano playing and restricted computer time. Does anyone have any interesting ideas for me before I contemplate surgery? How about acupuncture? Anything else out there I haven't come across? Decided I had to respond when I saw an upstate NY request. I'm from Skaneateles (near Syracuse) in the beautiful Finger Lakes and an hour from Rochester. I, too, have had trouble locating many basktmakers in our area. John McGuire, Nantucket person, is in Geneva, NY, a half hour from both Rochester and Syracuse. There is someone in Elmira too and we can all keep looking! I have been weaving for two years now and can't learn enough or weave fast enough! Thanks to all of you for the great ideas. After awhile it seems as though any colored reed (especially green & mauve) fade out. Someone told me to spray Liquid Gold on the baskets (before staining). Has anyone heard of this? I thought that the stain would preserve the color but it doesn't. Baskets I have accented with hunter green eventually take on a "brownish" cast. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Weave a basket of some kind for your swap partner. Weave a basket you would be glad to receive. 2. When you pack the basket for shipping/mailing, include the recipient's name and address on a paper or card inside the package AND include your own name, address and email inside the package. I also like to send a note about the basket I wove and some information about myself. If you use a pattern by someone else, it's nice to say whose pattern it was. 3. Send the basket to the designated person. The final deadline for sending your basket out is APRIL 22, 2000. 4. Notify me by email (zestfulweavings@hotmail.com) when you have sent your basket. 5. Notify me AND the weaver (by email) when you have received your new basket. A post to WW is nice, but should not substitute for a personal thank you note to the weaver, expressing your appreciation for the basket they wove. 6. ENJOY!! Remember....the deadline for registering is getting closer! SATURDAY, MARCH 25th is the cut off! I will be away March 23-25th. All swap partner assignments will be e-mailed by the 26th. I have already started sending some of them out! So far we have 118 participants!! :) Jennifer Mulcare-Sullivan Massachusetts.....where it snowed yesterday --- in the 50's the day before -- only in New England! ;-) %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Monkey Business Twill Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2000 10:14:27 -0500 From: "Ruthanne M.S. Morningstar" To: davidc@iei.net Hello to all: I just received a copy of the pattern Monkey Business Twill from my good friend, Marty Holihan. She ordered several copies and I remember them being mentioned awhile back on WW's. This pattern was developed in loving memory of Peggy Koch and the profits are donated to the Helping Hands, Monkey Helpers for the Disabled. Monkey Moms are dedicated woman who raise a Monkey to help improve the quality of life for quadriplegic individuals by assisting them with daily activities. This takes four years. The pattern is well written and will cost you $5.00. Laura Lee Zanger, the writer of this pattern, says this pattern can be ordered fromBasketpatterns.com Marty and I thought this deserved more advertising. Order one today! Help support Monkey Moms and basketweaving! I'll have some patterns for sale at The Bash. The Basket Bash 2000 Committee would like to Thank Dollie Koch, of Weaver's Stain, for donating Weaver's Stain to our Basket Bash 2000. All participants will have a chance of staining their baskets made at The Bash with Weaver's Stain and we'll still have some left over for door prizes too! Thank You very much Dollie! Lois, Marty wore her shirt and shared her candy with Guild members. I thought I saw a sigh of relieve when we had a low turnout of members. Just joking! Have to finish getting kits ready for the Indy Convention and then I'm off for a week. Looking forward to meeting some of you! A beautiful sunny day in Michigan! Ruthanne M.S. My sister told me that at one time, one of my dad's good friends was a basket maker. She said his baskets were quite beautiful and that he actually made them to sell. He must have been doing this for some time so I just wondered if anyone in Weaver's Words has heard of a weaver - he has passed away but would be in his 80's if alive. He would have lived in or near Martin Tennessee. If anyone has any information about this, I would be quite grateful. My dad has passed away so I have no other source for this information. Thanks! The beads need to have a hole that is small enough to fit two strands of4 ply waxed linen through it without the bead being too loose (slipping down the strands of waxed linen). I am planning to use the beads on waxed linen purse necklaces and the bead keeps the purse drawstring cinched up tight. This way I don't have to tie the waxed linen to hold the bead tight to the purse and a person could slide the bead down the strands to open the purse easily, if she wanted to. I checked out Shipwreck Beads and General Bead on the Internet and they do not carry this type of bead in this large of a size. I also tried bead shops in the Milwaukee, WI area. Any leads you may have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks to everyone who gave me ideas about how and whereto hang my basket necklaces. I now have a Shaker peg rack in my bedroom to display them. Happy Spring to All! Lisa Carstens in SE Wisconsin (cold, rain/snow, windy, and gray skies) I think I had better make myself a spring door basket soon so I can take my "Let It Snow" basket down. It's definitely time. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: WW Basket Swap #8 update....... By soaking your nails in vinegar, you are making iron acetate (vinegar being acetic acid). When placed on the iron reacts with the tannic acid in the wood to form dark gray or black iron tannate. You will probably not get a similar effect on rattan reed, as this is a chemical reaction rather than a direct stain. Ruthanne M.S. Morningstar - Congratulations on the new computer. Kay Harradine - I have some questions about the t-shirts. Are they 100% cotton? (I can't wear poly-blends.) Do you have them in L or XL sizes? How much is shipping? Are there any color options? Lisha Kimball - I look forward to the day I might be able to have a workshop as big as your building! It sounds like the new living quarters will be great. Certainly handy, anyway. Let us know how the construction comes along, please. Karen Sullivan - Good description of your teaching philosophy! Debbie Hudson - I also make a lot of twined baskets. Several of my twined linen pieces are among my photos at the WW website. Angie in PA - Can you please give us author and publisher information on the book MAKING THE NEW BASKET? Do you have copies available for sale? Kathy Thomas - Who is the 'author' (if that's the right term) of the CD-ROM on coiling? Cathryn P. - Thanks for the event report. Herbalism is another of my interests (I sometimes think of basketry as a branch of the herbal/botanical thing). Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2000 12:25:41 -1000 From: The Keener Clan To: davidc@iei.net Aloha from sunny and hot Honolulu, I spent the past weekend at our Girl Scout camp for an adult retreat in the mountains on the North Shore (about 50 miles from my house). It was great to be in the "quiet" for 3 days though it did rain, the wind howled and there was a rat in our cabin, but such is camping. I learned to make washi beads and to weave a lei in the haku manner which is something I have wanted to do for years. I also taught a simple basket class (a 9" x 9" square-8" tall) in a 3-hour session. I packed their kits with green, dark brown and tan reed and plenty of seagrass (I wanted their baskets to look as "natural" and "camp" as possible), but forgot the banana tree bark (left it in the yard--if I was going to forget something, that was probably the best thing). I remembered what Anna from Tassie said about weaving with it and I included a strip in the sample. It looked like a rustic stenciling strip. The stuff frommy trees is a light brown. One of the outdoor trainers then hiked down into the valley and brought an arm full of the banana bark up for the weavers to use and hers was a very dark brown--really beautiful stuff. It looked great in their baskets--and everyone was happy with their basket. It was the first for all of them. So now I*m eyeing up every plant in my yard wondering what I can add to my baskets--or what I can weave into a haku lei...
