This is what it costs to buy a gallon of... Diet Snapple - 16 oz for $1.29 = $10.32 a gallon Lipton Iced Tea - 16 oz for $1.19 = $9.52 a gallon Gatorade - 20 oz for $1.59 = $10.17 a gallon Ocean Spray - 16 oz for $1.25 = $10.00 a gallon STP brake fluid - 12 oz for $3.15 = $33.60 a gallon Vick's Nyquil - 6 oz for $8.35 = $178.13 a gallon White Out - 0.7 oz for $1.39 = $254.17 a gallon Scope - 1.5 oz for $0.99 = $84.84 a gallon And this is the real kicker... Evian water - 9 oz for $1.49 = $21.19 a gallon...$21.19 FOR WATER!!! So next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on White Out!!! I just read your post in WW about joining swaps. Please reconsider joining in the basket swaps!! Everyone starts out as a beginner....it is nothing to worry about!!! I do not think anyone would be disappointed with a basket woven by you or any other "beginner"! I have been participating in swaps for the past year & a half......... all the baskets that I have received were wonderful! Some were from new weaver's others from more experienced......they were ALL beautiful! I consider myself a newer weaver & can appreciate the anxiety in sending out your weaving to places & persons "unknown". It can be a hard thing to do but, this is a great forum to do it in. I think you'll find WW is a pretty supportive group, no matter what your experience/weaving level is! The other thing I've enjoyed w/ the swap is learning different techniques or new ideas from the swap baskets I've received! I would love to have you participate in swap #8!! Please think about it & if you decide to join....contact me at Zestfulweavings@hotmail.com . I'd be thrilled to sign you up!! Take care, Jennifer Mulcare-Sullivan WW Basket Swap #8 Coordinator %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: WW Date: Mon, 13 Mar 2000 23:06:39 -0500 From: "The Crowe's Nest Basketry" To: "David Collins" Hi and happy St. Paddy's day to all! Information about attaching leather: Not only do we carry the leather straps, oiled or dyed and mystery braid, we sell and use a Chicago screw to attach it. We have found it to be durable and the attachers are solid brass and come in several lengths. I am confident we will find one to go through the thickness you are using. If they tarnish over time, they can be cleaned easily with brass cleaner. If you are in need of straps or screws, we will be more than happy to help. We can also help you with the most effective way we have found to insert them into your basket. We finally got moved into our log home after almost 8 years. All the logs had aged to a nice rustic gray. But we had to add another new log that wasn't aged. Our cabinetmaker that made our stairway and trim work told me to take rusty nails, pour vinegar on them, and let set for a few weeks. I did this, and it actually worked. It's not the exact same gray as the other logs, but looks better than a new log standing out like a sore thumb. I thought this information might be beneficial to someone that would want to try this on baskets. I haven't as of yet, but plan to soon. Also would like to mention to everyone in my general area that I will be having an Herb Festival at the Mullins Log Cabin in Grant Co., Kentucky on April 15th & 16th. There will be herb-gathering baskets for sale, also my herbal soaps, FREE workshops on crafting wild herbs, and several herb plants for sale. Lots more too, but won't take up any more space. Just mark your calendar if you live anywhere close to the area. It should be an educational and fun time. April 15th &16th. 10-5. Send private e-mail if you need more info. Thanks so much. Safrit" To: "Collins, David" Theressa Hamm - I joined NCBA in June 1999. I also was a weaver for many years and had never joined. I will be attending my first convention this March. The person who can directly help you is Gertrude Hundley. She is in charge of Membership. Gertrude's e-mail address is basket@sandtech.net. If you send her a message and she does not respond this week, do not panic. The basket convention is this week and I expect all the officers are very busy! My experience with Gertrude was very pleasant and I'm sure she will be happy to help you. Shirley Shipley - Your Uncle Jack's sign is the best answer I have read to the Craftsman/Artist question. Thank you for sharing those few lines. Dee G - I'm very sorry to hear about your Mother. My Mother is getting older and feeble. We have spent many hours weaving baskets together. I taught her to weave. Now that she has arthritis very badly in her hands& fingers, it's a struggle for her to weave. She still weaves sometimes. I cannot say that I understand your pain, only that I can imagine it is a great sense of loss and emptiness. I do know that I dread the day that I have to deal with losing my Mother & friend. You're in my thoughts & prayers. However, they realize I can*t spend a lot of class time working with them and a "new creation". Something that has happened at two classes lately has made me wonder. I*ve had two experienced weavers taking one of my classes for the first time and have told me "I don*t need your help. I am a weaver and can do it myself" Makes you wonder what they*re doing in class...but I let them do "it" themselves and if it works fine and if it doesn*t, I*m usually standing by to help. Joanne and I did indeed have a girl's night out--and had a fine time at the concert. But I can*t understand why I can*t remember what day it is--and yet I can still remember all the words to every Herman*s Hermit*s song--most I haven*t heard for 30 years! The site for Tandy Leather is: http://www.tandyleather.com/DEFAULT.ASP When you get there, the strips are under "belts and buckles". As it turns out (talk about faulty memories), I*m the swap coordinator for swap #11 (I think you all who are swapping are in #9 now)...and we will definitely take a break of a couple of months between #10 and#11..even weavers need a rest. A neat catalog from the weaving event in Branson arrived today...that looks like it would be a lot of fun to attend. Joanne and I are thinking about attending the NC Convention next year. You are a delight. It's just that when you made that remark, it brought up a question that I thought might be of interest to teachers and students alike. From a teaching point of view, how many are upset/offended by changes to their original pattern/design and from a student point, how many feel they would upset/offend the instructor making changes! Just a something to ponder. The glimpse of "Spring" brings pondering out in me! And, I hope you share the Macadamia nuts! Lynn Pawley - How was your trip to Hawaii? Looking forward to the Indy Convention. Basket Bash 2000 - Things are moving along smoothly. We have a few spaces open. Anyone interested, contact me. BB2000 is April 7, 8 and 9 in Mayville, MI in the thumb area. Peach dye - I seem to remember Theresa Ohno making a peach dye bath from pinecones. Those of you who knew Theresa Ohno might enjoy this little story. You may have heard it. She said when she'd ask her daughter to go the supermarket with her, the daughter would reply, "Are you going to go to the Produce Section and embarrass me asking for their garbage?" She would always ask for anything they were throwing away that she thought she could get a dye out of. She always had cute, little stories. Since I will be weaving non-stop this weekend at the North Carolina Convention I shortened my nails to a nice comfortable length yesterday. I weave locally with about 8 ladies who also wear nails and we all agree - no problem! I am disappointed that I won't be attending the Missouri Convention this year. Several of us in our area are paid members and as of today have received no convention booklets and tomorrow is the deadline to register. Looking forward to seeing WW members this weekend. This is my first ever I am joining. I am nervous and excited at the same time. I doubt very much that any weaver would be critical. I think anyone joining or wishing to join the first time has mixed emotions. Join to expand your horizons and you can say I DID IT! I think it is supposed to be a fun time. Join for the love of weaving and meeting new people. I hope you e-mail WW back to say you did join, Sharon. I worry my basket would be a disappointment to another more talented basket maker. < Sharon, please don't doubt yourself or the quality of work. We are (all too often) our own worst critics. Seems to me the point of the basket swaps is sharing and making new friends. I suspect that most of the people who are signing up for this newest swap are 1st timers, and many of them are novice basket makers (or would describe themselves as such). It's not as though it were a competition for inclusion in the American Crafts Museum or the Smithsonian, or something like that. Please sign up for the swap, Sharon. You (and your swap partner) won't regret it. Best regards, Phillip Allen, Stratford, CT %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: "Weavers Words" V. 3 I. 115 Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000 13:01:16 -0600 From: Roberta R Comstock To: davidc@iei.net "Weavers Words" Vol. 3 Iss. 115 Laurie Burns - Wanda Graham teaches a casserole basket with leather handles. We punched double-wide holes in both ends of each handle strap. With the finished side of the leather up, put a tapered spoke end through each wide hole. Use spokes that will be turned down. The turn down locks the short end of the handle in place. The handle is then bent down on the outside of the basket and the rim is applied over it. When you lift the basket by the handles, they stay just where you put them - no way to slip out. Another option, that requires a vertical slit instead of a wide hole, is to thread the handles onto your last weaver, leaving the short ends on the inside of the basket. When you apply the rim pieces, the leather handle will come up between the inner and outer rims. I'd put the rim filler toward the inside of the handle and lash tightly at both ends of the leather. For someone who just needs a few handle straps, consider cutting them from old leather belts available at most thrift stores. You can also sometimes find leather garments (skirts, jackets, vests) that can be cut up and used for handles, accent weavers or ornaments. Jennifer - It looks as if you're off to a good start with WW Swap #8. Good Luck! Dee Grinenko - You have my sympathy on the loss of your mother. Ruthanne - There's nothing wrong with only 10% of the WW readers participating in each swap. Just remember that it isn't always the same 10%! Believe it or not, there IS a marine supply store here in the middle of the continent. Go figure! :=) Karen Sullivan - I think you have to send your swap sign-up request to Jennifer at her personal email address, which was given with the instructions she posted. As far as I know, none of the swap coordinators have accepted sign-ups posted to WW. Theresa - Good luck with joining your state guild! In Missouri, it is possible to attend the convention without joining ahead of time if you pay your dues at the door. Of course, this means that your class selection is limited to unfilled classes, but there always seem to be several good ones to choose from. The biggest disadvantage is not getting the catalog in advance, but if you can get to a convention that allow on-the-spot joining, it's definitely worth doing. Sharon - Please consider joining the swap this time. I think most of us are just as glad to get a basket from a new weaver as from an old-timer. Then when you get to be famous, we can say, 'Oh, yes, I have one of her early pieces!' Heidi Brewer-Peters - Sounds like a wonderful weekend! Thanks for sharing. What did you weave there? Marty Holihan - I'm with you on the personalization of baskets I make in classes. So far, I've never had a teacher object. Nancy Brandt - I hadn't thought of using Fray Check on the ends of ravelly weavers, but it's a great idea. I have used a dab of silicon glue/calk on occasion. While reading your post, I opened up Explorer and typed in www.tandyleather.com and I got Tandy. I have their catalog anyhow. But doing this reminded me I wanted to order some new leather dyes. Sharon in Virginia - I've said it before and am saying it again. Join the swap. Don't be shy. You'll be surprised at the fun you'll have joining in. I already have my basket complete. Sealed and wrapped. I'm just waiting for a name and address to send it to. I just have to hope I don't get a name of someone whom hates the color. I'm finding the swaps are keeping me involved in weaving more and trying new things I haven't tried before. So, I am loving them. Some of my creations have me wondering. I also, wonder what some of the people receiving them think. I'm working on two swap baskets for other swaps right now. They're things I've thought about but never got to. The swaps are making me stopping thinking and start acting. I have one creation in the basement I started a swap back. It's still there because it left me scratching my head. I plan on getting back to it over the summer. I know it has possibilities, it just needs more time. I feel I get more out of these swaps then just a basket from another basket maker. I get more adventure and more technique in my own weaving. That's the grandest prize. Don't get me wrong, I've loved the baskets I've received. But I'm received a lot more then the basket I can physically touch. I'm receiving an ability and an adventure with each swap. Knowing that it's another basket maker that's receiving the items is making me strive that much harder to do that much better. So Sharon, find your own adventure and join us in this next swap. We would love to have you with us. My next challenge is to incorporate my painting into my baskets and gourds. Yes, I know it can be done. I just haven't gotten the courage to give it a try yet. I had a great heart to heart discussion with my painting instructor about it. And that's given me courage to finally give it a try. I bought a new selection of brushes. Now I just have to find a day to do just this and nothing else. I think I can give it a try in April. I'm shipping my Mom to NC for the month. That means I have a little more time for me and my studies. Must run now. That is a great deal of work! Almost every WW, someone is asking when the next swap is, or asking what a swap is. It seems to me, the subscribers are being served very well, the next swap is never too far distant if you are wanting to join, and no one has to participate in any one swap.
